John builds a nice deck, no doubt about it.
We did have some things that we found to be frustrating about working with him, and had we known this before hand, we would have considered an alternate builder. Since there aren't many reviews out there, I felt it was important to share these details so you can be prepared for what to expect if you work with him.
One issue that we had is his communication. He is very chatty and personable, but sometimes he would go on tangents and say things that were unprofessional and frankly made us kind of uncomfortable.
He also didn't adequately communicate and give updates on the status of his progress. We had to ask him for information that we felt he should have provided to us. When it was clear he wasn't meeting stated timelines, we had to inquire about that. It was frustrating.
Furthermore, he wouldn't give us clear answers about costs of the project so we had no way of knowing how much the labor costs were and the materials. He speaks in very general terms and gave us estimates but he wouldn't provide specific costs that we would liked to have known so we could better understand what we were paying for. We felt we ended up paying him for services he didn't provide when we amended the contract--more on that later. We also had to ask him to do certain things in the framing, etc. when it was unclear if he would do them. Had he spelled it out for us a little more clearly, it would have given us more peace of mind.
A central issue we had was in him not meeting deadlines. When we began the project he told us it would be around 90 days to complete, but that estimate gave him "plenty of cushion." Yet he missed that deadline by two weeks and a second deadline as well. When we asked him why he didn't meet that deadline, he didn't give us a clear answer. We wanted him to be more accountable.
Which leads me to my next concern...his work ethic. I get that building decks is hard and physical. But many days he'd show up around 10, chat with neighbors, etc. and then often be done for the day around 2-3. Some weeks he'd put in 20 hours or less . We just felt he could have met those deadlines had he put in longer days.
It also didn't help that it wasn't until we were getting ready to sign the contract that he told us he would be taking a 2 week vacation in the middle of the project. People are entitled to this, of course, but he assured us it wouldn't affect the finish date, which it clearly did. It felt kind of shady the way he slipped that in, but we had pen in hand and decided to put faith in his words. Had he worked a 40 hour work week, he likely would have made those deadlines.
We decided to amend the contract to not include the dry space underneath because, frankly, we were ready to see him be off the site. We didn't have confidence he'd be able to finish that aspect of the project in the loose timeline he provided.
In summation, John can build a nice deck. People who have seen it have commented on how nice it looks. But we found the aforementioned things to be very frustrating--his poor communication, lack of clarity around our costs/expenses, and overall work ethic. If those things don't matter as much to you, then John may be a good option for you. But if you want someone to deliver on what they say and take ownership and provide better information about costs, updates, etc., you may want to find someone else to build your deck. read more
