Prime rib was great, enjoy the salad bar. On top of the food the service was amazing.

This reminded me of Saltgrass Steakhouse, but this was a little bit better. The restaurant has a nice interior, with a Western style feel to it, and they make everyone feel welcome. Our waiter was one of the best I had on this trip along Interstate 10, and he was frequently checking on us to see if we were enjoying our meals. For an appetizer, we shared some wantons with some of that good soy sauce like dipping sauce. I enjoyed these, and they would be nice to have down in Houston. They reminded me of those cheese sticks that are common in most places. I had a 12 ounce rib eye steak with a side of fries. The steak was cooked medium, which was tender, and had a nice taste to it. In some places, I've had steak that was over cooked or didn't have enough flavor. With this steak, it was just perfect in terms of taste, texture, and flavor. There are many different sides which I could've tried, but I will be sure to find another one of these restaurants if possible. Come on out if you're traveling through New Mexico on Interstate 10, and explore this town's great food places. read more

We came here under the recommendation of a local who said it's one of the city's best places to dine. At this point we've been to Indulgence and have found what is an excellent dining experience therefor setting the standard for what Las Cruceans expect to be excellent so we didn't even bother to check the yelp reviews for Cattle Barron thinking it's the same. We agreed to dine here for Valentine's Day and arrived at 4 PM, conveniently missing the rush of romantic diners when they get off work. We were immediately seated, our server was very kind, actually all the wait staff, runners, managers, etc were very kind. The decor is also very classy and enjoyable. Little things like drink mix ups, food mix ups, and overall taste made me think of this as more of a upscale fast food place like Claim Jumper or Outback Steakhouse versus an actual upscale steakhouse. It was good but not enough for me to enjoy it for a memorable holiday or to come back. There's just something missing that could make the whole place much better and I cannot put my finger on it, but I hope they figure it out as there is definitely potential for greatness here. read more

After a terrible experience at another restaurant I arrived with a party of 4 to Cattlebarons starving and praying to actually have food served after an hour wait from when we originally intended to eat. Kiko, was our server and he was a joy! Efficient, friendly, knowledgeable, and understanding of our situation with a great sense of humor. The salad bar was fresh and they were aware of an Ecoli outbreak and let us know why there wasn't romaine at the bar, before we even asked. Our steaks came out made to order with perfection & sauces, and anything we could possibly need was forseen... including the raw horseradish. We even ordered 8oz steaks and were served 16oz at no extra cost. I will be a return customer. The space was clean and uncluttered, bathrooms too. Bravo Cattlebaron...bravo. Unpleasant experience. Driveway needs repair. Flow is confusing. We wound up pinned between two other cars going opposite directions. Staff refused to sell a glass of champagne to my wife (she'll be 79 in a few weeks) because she didn't bring her age ID. We were told that it is required of all restaurants in New Mexico, except for all the other restaurants we've gone to in the last five years. Staff is denied the authority to make decisions. The NY Center Cut I ordered at Cattle Barrons was just terrible. But I really didn't expect anything different than what I got. Attentive service, but my meal showed up before my cocktail did. Literally, within 5 mins. I had my salad & Steak. My Bourbon cocktail showed up in 10 mins. later. I was told the bar tender was busy. Couldn't choke down my steak but I took it home with me for my 84 pound German Shepherd to eat. She'll love it. She won't be disappointed. Nice warm decor in the restaurant. We went to Cattle Baron for our anniversary, looking forward to the prime rib and steak, and were very disappointed. My steak, which was supposed to be well done, came back rare. Came to Las Cruces to visit my parents...and they took me to Cattle Baron! I don't frequent "prime" steakhouses. Can't afford them. But every once in a while there is a hidden diamond in the rough. A place where you can get a burger for $9, or a pound of prime rib for $26. I had the 14 oz. ribeye and it was absolutely delicious!!!! Cutting through the steak was like a knife through warm butter. This steer was corn fed to the bone. I like it medium rare and they cooked it perfectly - crisp outside and tender middle, with juices dripping out and bathing the sides. I inhaled that slab in minutes. It went down sooo easy. They also have a great salad bar with fresh salads and light desserts. Potato salad, green pea salad, etc...I didn't eat that but my wife was raving about it. I came for the meat, and left with the meat deep in my belly. The steak was poor, got the sirloin (based on the special symbol most menus have next to their better food items) and it was tough, although, it did maintain some juciness. The mushrooms and onions I ordered as a topping were extremely scarce and sautéed quality was disappointing. I am very offended that those items cost me an extra $3. Could've done it all much better and for much cheaper at home. Now for the not so bad. The salad bar quality was OK, the variety in the salad bar was good, this is their redeeming factor. The mashed potatoes were homemade and done alright, I'd eat those again; wish they served two scoops instead of a small single. Satisfactory salad bar. But VERY sad stuffed prime rib special. That meat was ever so disappointing especially after dining at the Pecan Grill and Brewery the night before. Check their reviews :P. Yum! Go there! This prime rib cut was overdone and overall awful; why do that to a prime rib? I tried to chew it - no good. I had to send it back and it was taken off bill. My go-to restaurant whenever I'm in Las Cruces (or, to a lesser extent El Paso or Ruidoso) is the Cattle Baron. I usually order the Ribeye, salad bar, and steak fries. The ribeye is truly a fine cut of beef. Medium rare, and the waiter always waits for me to check the steak. As usual, excellent service with excellent food, with a fairly good view of the sun setting over Las Cruces. The creme brulle was not as well executed as some others that I've had, but the flavor was good, and the coffee was strong. I've been to Morton's. I'll come back to the Cattle Baron. Notes: - You may try to come before the crowd arrives, as some people don't really know how to behave at the salad bar. I'll never look at potato salad the same way again. - The ribeye is a distinctive cut of beef. If you are given something else, send it back. If your steak isn't prepared right, send it back. Errors like these are easily corrected, and if they are not you need to speak with the manager. read more

Bottom line: decent food, but the prices are a little high for the quality. For these prices, I expect grissle-free steaks. Sure, I still expect to use a knife to cut it, but grissle? Ugh. Side items are good, but nothing special--or more to the point, none of them were unique. The salad bar is very big--one fo the biggest ones I've seen in a while. I can't say that vegetarians would be thrilled, but at least they won't go hungry. Service was ok. A little slow, but certainly better than "self service" which seems to be the norm these days (why is that average tip has gone up to 20% but average service continues to diminish?). The server we got didn't know much about alcoholic drinks so it took a little back and forth to get the drink order finalized, but she was trying hard. Kind of funny after a hard day of work. This isn't my type of steakhouse they took a long time to bring our food and when they brought my rib-eye which should of been medium rare it came to me burnt sent it back and got a rare rib-eye after that I finally got a medium rare. It used to be that if you wanted a piece of good prime rib in Las Cruces, it was a "no brainer " You went to Cattle Baron. Things have changed. the parking lot is emptier. Prices have gone up. Quality has gone down. I ordered the rare prime rib - 8 oz. kIt was so tough, I could stand my knife up in the meat! when a manager finally came over, he offered to "make an adjustment " on the bill. instead of removing the item, he took off five dollars. Poor choice and chintzy. We won't return. BTW my wife's catfish was excellent. Good PR trumps bad food. A more generous accommodation for an uneaten piece of prime rib would have been appreciated. read more

This is the worst Cattle Baron out of all of them. Granted I haven't been to the ones in Lubbock or Midland, but I bet they're good too. Hobbs is good, Roswell is good, Ruidoso is real good, and the ones in El Paso are the best. Why is the one in Las Cruces so mediocre? Heard from a friend about their soup and salad bar. So on our first visit we both tried this. Because of the savory soups this salad bar is better than the chain restaurant, "Jason's Deli" salad bar. On our second visit I had the soup and salad with fideo and posole soup. My partner had a 8 oz. medium rare sirloin which she liked. We'll be back to try their steaks. After a long day on the road, my boyfriend and I were in the mood for a huge slab of meat so we headed to the Cattle Baron. The food was A-/B+. I had the chicken fried steak, and I can safely say was the best I have ever had. My boyfriend wasn't as satisfied. He had a steak with the shrimp scampi / Pontchartrain topping and he said the steak was fine, but it seemed like the shrimp and Pontchartrain topping was a day old and was trying too hard. He said it would have been great if the shrimp / sauces were fresh. The service was quick and polite. I had two main complaints about this place. It was dark, even by dim steak house standards. Even reading the menu was kind of hard in the light. My second complaint was variety. The salad bar doesn't have a lot of choices if you are going for a traditional salad. There are lots of choices if you want pasta salad, fruit salad, mystery salad... but regular salad, not so much. I thought the menu lacked variety as well. The sides were limited, though tasty. I liked what The Cattle Baron was shooting for with its food and ambiance, but they fall a bit short of the 5 star rating. When your "claim to fame" is something as simple as a steak, you have to do something special to stand out from the crowd. Cattle Baron is an acceptable place to get that steak, but odds are you probably won't walk out thinking about the next time you want to go back. Not much about the experience sticks with you. Service: 2/5 Very rarely do I take servers to task. Call me a softie, but even when they make mistakes, I don't often make their lives miserable about it. We came in on a Friday night at the tail end of the dinner rush, about 8pm or so. Our server was visibly frazzled and stressed out. She took our order, and then we didn't see her again... until our meal arrived. Now on the surface, this wouldn't seem to be a problem, except for the fact that we ordered an appetizer. She had failed to even put the appetizer order in to the kitchen. Further, the burger my wife ordered was suspiciously missing something... namely anything except some assorted toppings. There was no burger to speak of at all. My meal was intact, but we were short the other entree and the appetizer. She apologized profusely and my wife's burger arrived shortly after. The appetizer didn't show up until we were halfway through our meal. At this point you might be questioning why I didn't just cancel the app or take some other action. As I said, I'm a softie. I know if I were in that position, I would want the benefit of the doubt and a second chance. So I chalk it up to her having a bad night, and life goes on. Food: 3/5 As I said in the opening, when your menu is simple, you need to execute it well. Cattle Baron executes it... passably. My wife's burger was good. The salad bar selections were good. The fish I ordered was good. But that's all any of it was... good. Strangely enough, the most impressive thing we ordered, was the appetizer, which was a spinach artichoke dip. So it turns out it was a good decision for me to not cancel it when it did not arrive when it was supposed to. With all the other errors, we understandably passed on dessert. Overall Impressions: 4/5 The restaurant itself is warm and inviting. The decor goes with the rustic steakhouse vibe they are aiming for. The price and value of the food is acceptable. But as I keep coming back to with this review, Cattle Baron just doesn't do anything extraordinary. And when you're in the steakhouse business, you have to stand out from the "crowd" somehow, and they don't do anything like that for me. read more

It used to be that Cruces was small enough that there really was only one place you could go for a NICE dinner (and by nice I mean the kind you dress up for) without going to a country club. Cattle Baron was it. They have a good happy hour. Their salad bar is fresh, but unoriginal. Their steaks are decent. But the only folks who are going to confuse this place with five-star dining are those who never stepped out of Cruces into a foodie city. The menu is ordinary. The ambiance is more elevated than most eateries in Cruces, but it does not have a very cohesive or polished interior design. For a date night, I'd recommend Lorenzo's. For a place to take a client, there are now other options (Lemongrass, Double Eagle, Lorenzo's all come to mind). To take out of town guests? Not this place. There's nothing really unique or special about it. In short, for the kind of restaurant it is trying to be (higher end), it falls way too short. read more

However, I didn't get waited on for 10 minutes after being seated; the new waitress forgot to bring me some limes for my iced tea (had to asked twice); she also forgot to being me some bread (had to asked twice); she didn't refill my drink; and she was extremely slow.
