We've been here numerous times this was probably the worst experience we had. The salad Some of it was brown, and the soups were not good at all. One was really salty just not a pleasant taste the other was creamy, but so so thick, thicker than gravy. I got the green chile wontons as an appetizer, bread with butter, and for my entree I got the chicken/chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and onion rings. I added a salad for an extra $4.95. The restaurant overall looked clean and had nice seating. The salad from the salad bar was good and there were a lot of options to choose from. The green chile wontons were just okay. The cream cheese inside was dry and rough in texture, and the wonton itself was dry too -- it seemed like they had been sitting out on the warmer. The chicken/chicken fried steak was good, but I had to add salt and pepper because the breading and gravy didn't seem to have much seasoning. The mashed potatoes were great and seasoned well. The onion rings were very thin and greasy. If I would have known they were like that, I wouldn't have ordered them. At the end I got a fruit salad from the salad bar and it was flavorful and creamy. Overall my experience wasn't bad, but it wasn't the best either. My server Daniel was great and friendly, which made the experience better. I'd rate the food a 3 out of 5. read more

Visiting family from out of town and they suggested we go to Cattle Baron for lunch and I'm glad we did! Not only was the ambience really nice but the food was delicious; chile wontons, bread, salad, steaks and dessert were all on point. This is a great steakhouse. My filet was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. The baked potato was great and the fixings for the potato were generous. I also ordered their cheese sticks for an appetizer and I'm not sure if they're made in house but they were some of the best I've eaten. Like many places complimentary bread was served, but personally I didn't care for it. The bread wasn't warm and was really soft so it was impossible to cut without completely smashing it. The service was excellent and I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant too. I would definitely eat here again. read more

He wanted us to sit in the bar area and was not particularly pleased that we asked not to sit there since we were celebrating our anniversary. We've been to this location off and on for 30 something years. The food ranges from pretty darn good, to "WHAT... the heck...was THAT?" Our latest visit, first in over 2 years, left us with some of the worst food ever. First of all, we got "take out". The steak was under cooked. We ordered Well Done, and what we got was Medium Rare. The outside was charred, but the inside was pink and red. The steak has ZERO seasoning. I mean.... Z..E..R..O. Once I saw how red the meat was, I chopped it up and put it in a pan. Took one bite... nope... Ended up finishing the cook on meat, as well as seasoning it. We also got the garlic asparagus as a side. That was like $10 for four spears. Seriously. This is not our first choice for a steak place, but we thought we'd try it for a bit of a change. Yeah, go somewhere else. This is the worst steak we've had in, yeah, well, 30 years!! Today I celebrated my 76th birthday at Cattle Baron with a small group of friends. We planned to arrive at 11:30 am and I stopped by the day before and asked if we needed to make reservations. We were told yes, because they are quite busy. I made reservations for six. The table was ready when we arrived and the service was excellent. All but one of us had steaks and most of us had desserts as well. The ambiance was positive and very supportive of our various quirks, so we were able to feel welcome and had a good time. The salad bar was first rate and had ample choices so we could avoid foods that were at risk for the current outbreak of food poisoning on fresh greens. It was a lovely lunch. read more

Spring in Las Cruces brings the most unpredictable weather. While on the search for a bite to eat we decided to stop here and it was the best choice we could have made! We walked in and were immediately sat with no wait (about 6pm on a Sunday) and our server greeted us promptly after. She got our drink and our food. Looking fly steakhouses in the area, there weren't many choices, but we decided to try Cattle Baron. We arrived before the dinner rush, so we were sat very quickly, but that was the last quick thing we had that was quick. We had the green chile won tons for an appetizer, which was surprisingly good. My wife had the salad bar, which she said was good but had better. The NY strip was ok but not worth the price they charge. The ribeye steak was ordered rare but came out way overdone. The staff did replace it and the second one came out cooked right. I had added the mushrooms, however those were extremely disappointing. They basically were canned mushrooms with some seasoning. The kids' mac and cheese and spaghetti were ok, nothing really special. The steakhouse chicken was the best out of everyone. It was juicy, perfectly cooked, and tasted great. We had a chocolate cake and apple pie with ice cream, which both were pretty good. What was disappointing was the service. Felt everything was slow, we were never checked on, and had to call the waitress for everything. The waitress checked on others around us and then just walked right by us. This was our first time trying out this restaurant. We had traveled here to visit New Mexico State for a day. We decided to try this place out since it was recommended to us by some friends. It looks like a restaurant that would get very busy on special occasions or holidays. I have to say that the entrance is not where you think it should be. At least that was my mistake, when looking for it. We were greeted by a friendly staff and were seated right when we walked into the door. It was a pretty spacious dining area, with the kitchen and the salad bar to the right. We sat in the back corner, in a booth. Our server, Chelsea, was fantastic! Came over to greet us, ask what we'd like to drink and provided us with feedback on the menu. Since it was our first time visiting. They have a good variety of items on their menu. So we opted for the Rib Eye Steak and a loaded baked potato. The Rib Eye was delicious, melted in your mouth. Overall, the whole plate was enjoyable. Got that salad bar, as well. And let me tell you, that salad bar was pretty amazing in my eyes! So much better than other restaurants, sorry not sorry. Haha! I even got to have dessert from that salad bar. Can't beat that! Honestly I was extremely disappointed with my food, me and my friends got different things we were all really disappointed with the food the burger the chicken Alfredo and the steak were all flavorless, I ended up returning my chicken Alfredo ( by the way $20) and I had also gotten the salad bar with was $4 and since I ended up returning the chicken alfredo they price was bumped up to $14, it honestly just felt like money gone to the trash. I have dined here on a few occasions with really good meals. However, yesterday I purchased a prime rib. The meat was mostly fat (yes I know prime ribs has fat) but this was over the top. The red part was gristle and dry. I point it out to the staff and they offered a new cut to be brought to me. We were pushed for time so I said no thank you. The manager offered to take it off the tab. That was nice. I was just disappointed that the meat was so bad. So the staff were great. The other people at the table had okay meals. I've passed by this place many times over the years but tonight was my first time here. We sat in the lounge area and ordered the green chile wontons which were pretty good. The bread was fresh and really soft so it was a bit difficult to cut. My dad ordered the prime rib with onion rings and sautéed mushrooms and I got the New Mexico steak with sautéed onions and sweet potato fries. The prime rib was really mushy and the color didn't look right, it was all the same color on the inside and outside. The mushrooms weren't there so the host went to get a cup and they were back in like 10 seconds. The mushrooms looked like the watery, canned stuff. No way these were sautéed. The onion rings were really thin and the coating was flaky so it was a mess to eat them. My steak was really tough on the outside like it was well done but the inside look medium rare, and I had ordered it medium. I ended up getting mushrooms instead of the sautéed onions to go with my steak and I'm assuming someone mixed up the order. I wasn't going to ask the staff to get the onions because the mushrooms were fine. Mine looked like they were cooked at least. The green chile and cheese on top was a nice touch. I didn't get a lot of sweet potato fries, maybe less than a handful. It was an ok experience but a little disappointing. I don't know if I'd go back. Based on a lot of the other reviews it seems like the chefs don't know how to cook the meat. read more
