Rude Asian lady with short hair who NOT only kept asking us if we were ready yet, even though we just went into the store, And the store was both empty and not even close to closing time. She also had the audacity to demand exact change in a pretty rude manner. We offered 20 bucks for a 6 dollar purchase, but that wasn't low enough. We had ordered a birthday cake from this place recommended by a friend. The price is very reasonable for a 10" strawberry cake ($15). Have difficulty communicating with the staff when ordering and confirming the order. Something came up with the birthday girl and we had to reschdule the pick-up date. Got a chinese lady who is very impatient and rude who has a tone of voice like "I don't need your business so I don't really need to answer to your call". May be that's true but still, you don't want to pay someone who does not appreciate your business. O well. I bought the mango mousse cake the other day and it was just ok. I remember it being a lot tastier. There was very little cake, very little mousse, and a whole lot of orange jelly stuff. It was still good, just not what I had hoped for. I also bought a cake with half durian and half taro filling. Such a rip off! I would say 3/4 of the cake had taro filling. Crispy sponge cake!!! OMG so yummy! It's not your usual cake, its basically 2 layers of sponge cake with a thin layer of sweet cream on each side and in the middle crispy filo layers. Why I love this place: You get a 1/4 sheet cake of crispy cake for only $14. It's delicious, simple, and addicting. It's honestly a crispy layer of phyllo dough smashed between two layers of lightly creamed sponge cake. It is the most simple cake yet with a great complexity in texture. It's cheap and quick. However, I do not recommend having them write anything on your cake as they seem to do a hasty sloppy job. You're better off buying plastic decorations. After a let down at another establishment, i went to cathy's to get a mango covered cake. I called in ahead of time and asked specifically for ripe mangoes. (Who wants to eat mangoes that need a couple more days to ripen?) The mango was not as sweet as the other place, but the cake was SO MUCH better. It tasted the way chiffon cakes are supposed to taste. Not too dry, and delicate unlike the other place. I also bought two of their breads, (pineapple,and the mini baguette). Pretty damn good, comparable to the best of the asian bakeries in taste and texture. The baguette was so good and worth every penny. It is actually a baguette and not some wannabe fake asian ripoff. (many places just shape it and call it a baguette but use the same dough as their other breads) They are lacking in the packaging department (looks a little bit tacky) and their cashiers could use a little more grammar school or esl. Very bad service and rude employees! Just there order birthday cakes. I asked them for cake book to choose. The lady said there is pictures book, just whatever styles in the refrigerator. Which only had 4 styles. Before they have many styles to choose, not anymore. And the lady insisted me to pay cash. Whenever I crave some cake, I always think of the yummy cakes from Cathy's Bakery. They have one of the best taro cakes, and you can order the taro cakes with flaky layer of phyllo in the middle. In the summer when it's in season, they also have fresh mango cake, which is the best mango cake I've ever had. There are fresh chunks of mango in the cake, and the entire cake is topped with thin slices of mango. My mouth is salivating as I'm writing this, and I feel like driving out to Cathy's right now to get myself some cake. The prices are fair, and the cake is very fresh and light. It's not heavy and overly sweet like some other bakeries. The texture of the cake is very fine, making for a very airy and light tasting cake. Their cake probably appeals more to an Asian palette, since it's not too sweet or heavy with buttercream. I ordered a 3 tiered fresh mango cake for my wedding and all our guests raved about how delicious and light the cake was. The bakery is in a plaza that also houses a Japanese restaurant and a hotpot restaurant. The interior of the bakery is very small and nondescript. They also offer various Asian breads, such as taro bread, red bean, onion. I think their breads are average, but their' cakes are stellar. They also have a full sheet of vanilla cake with phyllo layer. It's one of their more popular items and they always sell out of it. Come check out Cathy's if you're in the neighborhood. I absolutely love this bakery. So the staff here is not all that friendly unless the owner is there - then everyone is friendly. Cakes are light & fluffy, you don't have all that heavy cream and butter that other places have. I don't feel like i'm wreaking my diet by eating their cakes. My family has gone to Cathy's Bakery for years and my sister and I pretty much grew up eating her crispy sponge cake. So when it was time for my wedding, this was definitely the first bakery on the list. We ordered a three-tiered sponge cake with fresh strawberry and mango filling. I was a little worried because the way I wanted my cake decorated (a simple, "rustic" style to go with the rest of the wedding decor) was a bit different from how the other cakes in the store looked. I sent their head baker Mary a few pictures of how I wanted to frosting to look; she told us she would practice a few times with the pictures as guidance. With the addition of some lavender and olive leaves from our wonderful florist (flowersbyladybuggs), the cake turned out absolutely beautiful and exactly as I had pictured. So please do not feel like you are limited to the style of decorations they have on display in the bakery, because Mary is amazingly talented and will really work with you to create the cake of your dreams. They also delivered the cake to our venue miles away and perfectly on time for our reception. And of course, the taste of the cake (the fluffiest sponge cake you can imagine, fresh fruit, and whipped cream) was unbeatable and we got so many questions from our wedding guests about what bakery we had used. I think that the ownership changed quite a while back, & unfortunately Cathy's Bakery has had a slow, then precipitous decline in quality. I'm sad to say that our family's favorite bakery for over 20 yrs has fallen far below its former standards. The egg tarts are now terrible-- the "egg" custard filling is clearly made from some cheap mix rather than from fresh eggs. The breads are not fresh & tasty. We will no longer be getting our breads, cakes from Cathy's. read more
