CASH ONLY. This bakery has been here for decades since I was a child and still here through all the different market management changes. Not my favorite but convenient if you're already here for the market it's located right by the entrance/exit. The parking is parking lot war during weekends. I only really go in now to grab a rolled cake while leaving the market. They're moist, fluffy and not too sweet. Nothing to complain about. Their curry puffy pastries are flaky and flavorful.
I literally go here for the specialty bread. It's one of the best baked goods I've ever had and I don't think I've ever come across any other bakeries that can replicate this
Been going to this bakery since I was a child. Still in disbelief that it's still there after all these years. Ever since I moved out of state, whenever I come home to visit my parents, I always try and come by this bakery to pick up some goodies. My childhood favorite pastry is the mung bean. Normally they would sell out during the mornings, so if you come to this bakery by the afternoon, there is a 50/50 chance they might have it. I was lucky enough to snag 2 when I went home to visit a few days ago. It was also during a work week while everyone was at work. Looking forward to my next visit, the next time I am in town.
Tanbii is located inside the GW Market plaza. They sell all kinds of traditional Chinese baked goods and cakes. I went into pick up a Chinese cupcake but walked out with a few more things: coconut buns, taro buns, sponge cake, egg tarts and curry pies. Overall the baked items are good, especially the coconut buns. However I would pass on the egg tarts and sponge cake. The sponge cake was so dry, and the egg tart has a strange taste to it, like dirty water or dirty oil? I can't put my finger on it. It's made with a firm shortbread-like crust, rather than the flaky crust I am used to. I ended up tossing it because I didn't want to risk food poisoning. Overall a good place to satisfy your Chinese carb cravings!
Located across from the pho place inside the plaza. Lots of free plaza parking, however, it gets pretty packed so you may have to circle around quite a bit for a spot. Good selection of pastries and cakes. They even have ice cream cakes! Cash only!! Have not yet tried their cakes, however the pastries were ok. Nothing spectacular but satisfies the sweet cravings. The cheesecake was not that great and a bit of a waste of calories. The ladies working there were very helpful and attentive.
Been coming here since I was a kid! Located in the inside the GW supermarket with plenty of parking in the plaza. Whenever I'm in the area, I love picking up their cake rolls because they make very unique flavors I don't really see often in other Asian bakeries. My favorite flavor is the lemon one! The cake part is basically sponge cake - tastes very moist, soft, and fluffy & the inner cream part - is a subtle layer of lemon flavored icing that isn't too overpowering or sweet 10/10! CASH ONLY!
This bakery is down to earth great value! Unlike most high end bakeries in SGV, this bakery has reasonable prices, good quality, and great value. Good varieties and selections but the popular items do sell our near end of day; so I'd recommend come here early or mid day for the good selections. We love their wheat toast (super moist and tasty) and mini birthday cakes (small but full of taste)!
I was walking about of the market place when I saw this bakery and figured I'd give it a try since I was a little hungry. After I got in line, there was a large line behind me of at least 4 other customers with only 1 person working the register. I could tell some of them were regulars because of how the cashier treated those customers vs me (who's first time was this encounter). The store is very small but it had a good assortment of breads, sliced and whole, mooncakes since it's the season, cakes (regular versus ice cream). They even sound roll cakes and leaf wrapped rice in the fridge. A little strange on the leaf wrapped rice because it's a bakery but to each their own. I bought coconut raisin bread for $4.25. The bread is fairly large so I didn't think I was getting ripped off for it. The smaller individual breads were already $1.95, so I figured this would be a good choice. The bread had a good amount of raisins on it and you can definitely see the coconut and taste it. However, this bread was way too buttery/oily. I used the bag that it was in to rip a piece off and you can just see all the oil that is coming off of the bread. I'm a bit disappointment to see how much oil there was on it. I've had this bread at different establishments and it was never this oily. Overall, very standard bakery but just too much butter for the liking.
I come to this bakery off, & on for over a decade! Only to get last minute birthday cakes. Preferably Taro being my personal favorite if it happened to be for my birthday! Which was what I got this year the day after last minute cravings. Price definitely went up just like everything else, but it still affordable @ $38. I got my usual Taro cake, & it didn't disappoint I was very happy, & satisfied with my choice. Fresh, & not overly sweet like American cakes. I don't recommend trying to place fancy cake orders.
This tiny bakery is located inside the Great Wall Supermarket. Formerly called Square Market. tip: CASH ONLY! Masks is required! New temporarily business hours! This bakery has been in business all my life! Good price for quality bread! All items are individually packed in plastic bags so no need to worry for COVID19. My mom and I usually like to get their toast. (Egg toast, egg and butter toast) it just taste better than plain white toast. Parking: located in huge plaza so no need to worry about parking spaces.
Solid Asian bakery place. This bakery is located inside the plaza with GW supermarket and closes fairly early, 6pm on Sunday and 5pm on other days. Make sure to bring cash because this place is cash only. We went on Sunday 5pm and they don't have that many selection for bread. There are 2 aisle for bread and basically there are only bread on 1 side. Recommend and love love love the coconut raisin bread. Size is very big, like 3-4 regular size bread and only cost $4.25. Worth it!! Flavor-wise is also delicious. Plenty of sweet coconut, they don't skimp, especially in the corners! Also tried the sponge cup cake for $1.95, it's OK. They also have birthday cake selection, rolls, and sliced cake, but we didn't try any. We did see a fat-size durian roll for $11-12, would give this one a try next time (Sunny bakery has it for $15).
Came to get a couple of items from this bakery. The egg toast is really soft and slightly sweet. The egg tart has more of a pie crust and the filling is sweet and eggy. Both is tasty.

My boyfriend bought me a cake for my birthday since I mentioned to him that this was the cake I my parents would always buy for me growing up. I even showed him where the location is at which is surprisingly near where he lives. Unfortunately, the cost of the cakes here massively skyrocketed which is pretty sad yet understandable since this is a small family business. Around $72 for a large rectangular sheet cake and $45 for the 8-inch cake. My boyfriend called in advance and asked for the small cake (assuming the 8 inch was the smallest), but ended up getting an even smaller cake haha. It was adorably cute and I shared with my parents. The coffee cake is the best. I would like to try out the green tea/matcha ice cream cake next time. read more
I have purchased pastries from Tanbii Bakery a long time ago. It's not a bakery I visit frequently. Most recently, a dear work colleague of mine mentioned that he buys the matcha green tea ice cream cake from here. He raved about how delicious it is. Thank you my friend. Well, I had to see it for myself. I came here this past weekend. This bakery is located in The Square Shopping Center in Rosemead. It's right on the left side after you enter through the glass doors before you head over to the Great Wall Supermarket. I saw an 8 inch Green Tea Ice Cream Cake for $45. I asked if they had a smaller size or even by the slice, but they don't have either. Oh well. Ice cream cakes require a freezer or be eaten as soon as possible. I was not near a freezer nor did I have the capacity of people to eat it right away. I'll have to figure out something next time to make it happen. You know I will LOL. Anyway, I walked around to check out the other pastries. It's not a very big bakery. I feel the pastry selections are quite limited IMHO. Their sponge cake is very small, but I still bought one. I also got a cream filled bun and two baked pastries... one with black bean filling and another with taro filling. I kept the sponge cake and black bean pastry and gave the other 2 pastries to my Mom. I will be back to try their green tea ice cream cake one day. I gotta bring my Mom and brothers' families to take it down timely before it becomes a liquid-y drink LOL. Thanks Tanbii for your specialized ice cream cakes! read more

A small Chinese bakery, located just inside the entry way of GW market, along with other misc. small businesses. Decent selections of baked breads, buns and cakes. Can't say that everything is good and fresh, because I haven't tried everything, but the coffee and strawberry flavored cakes are great, light, fresh and airy. Fruit tarts and the sponge cake are other great options. Interior is OK, average looking, shelves are stocked full of tasty looking baked treats. Staffers were OK, quick to greet, and was helpful in my purchase of my coffee flavored cake. Cakes are a little pricey, but your paying for quality, so buying a cake here is OK, once in awhile. read more

My mom went there to order a cake for 8 people and the cake was wonderful. We were hoping to make this occasion very special, but the bad cake made it less special. The girl that wrote the happy birthday and the chinese name had terrible handwriting! I asked for them to redo it and I was willing to foot the extra cost and they still said no! The communication style is not very professional during the entire conversation . My mom says they showed "not happy face". My mom also says "don't come this store!" My mom also compared the handwriting to her grandchild's crayon writing - the child writing better. read more

My parents told me that every time they pass by this shop, it is always empty. Today was no different. There is an employee who monitors/ watches customers. The two times I've passed by, someone is out on the sales floor, keeping watch. I went in to buy a basic sponge cake for $1.70 which is high compared to other bakeries in the areas and given its depressing ambiance compared to JJ or KeeWah. My review was previously flagged as culturally insensitive so I will be as general as possible. I had such a negative experience with customer service. Please note if the shop is slow, the store employee will watch over you like a hawk. In my case, I have never experienced such an awkward exchange before. It is a shame because their baked goods are actually delicious and fresh in my experience. It's the customer service that will drive you away. read more

My wife being from Taiwan, we have had our fair share of pineapple cakes. Tanbii hands down has both of our votes for being one of the top. *the crust is thinner which allows a good portion of the center to be bitten off with the crust. The crust is by far of has one of the best texture- not too crumbly and not to soft. * the center is fresh and flavorful. Ours is the pineapple cake with the yolk inside. Great great balance of sweet and salty. Awesome food!!! Keep up with the great food. Will be back!!! read more

Tanbii is an awesome traditional Chinese bakery. They have all the cakes you would expect at a Chinese bakery, you know the cream on the outside and strawberries in the middle type of cake, BUT they do it much better. The middle of there cake has this custard like filling mixed with the strawberries that makes the cake extra moist. There cakes are never dry and the whip cream is never too sweet. I love there taro cake, but what really put them over the top for me was my wedding cake. They did an fabulous job and it tasted great like always. I compare five different bakeries, Diamond Bakery, JJ Bakery, Cathy Bakery and Kee Wah Bakery. JJ was the most expensive even for a simple design, which I was looking for. Diamond had lots of choices, but when we did a tasting it really wan't memorable. Kee Wah's cake is too dry and Cathy didn't really do any designs. Our cake was beautiful, tasted great, and we even got a lot of compliments from our guests on the cake. Some of our guests even called me after the wedding to ask where I got the cake. One of my husband's friend had like 5 slices. Since the cake was so much cheaper than the other bakeries we ended up getting 4 tiers which could feed up more guests than we had, but everyone wanted second's because it was so good. Love this bakery!! Would totally recommend for any occasion. read more

I want that cake cake cake cake! My parents "surprised" me and bought my birthday cake at this little bakery shop located in the same plaza as the Square supermarket. I've been here a multiple times mainly for their cakes, but they do offer other pastries. What I really like about their cakes section is their wide selection. This is one of the few Asian bakeries I've seen that offers ice cream cakes and pudding cakes. Talk about yum! They ordered a mango pudding cake for me and I was excited for it because I am a huge fan of anything pudding in general. When I ate my first slice of this cake, I wasn't wowed by the taste, but I must say that their mango was fresh and their cake design was popping. It was the first time in my life I had a fruit and yellow pudding cake adorned with pink frosting on the sides. 4 stars for decorations and designs, but 3 stars for the quality and texture of the cake. So I'd give this place 3.5 stars. read more
Some of their baked goods are delicious, especially their popular paper wrapped sponge cake, and their chifon cakes. Prices have gone up substantially in the last few months as the effect of the higher prices of eggs (CA voters approved a ballot measure that would require all chicken farms to house their chickens with enough room so they can move around and stretch out, and that reduces the amount of chickens that will lay eggs, and therefore the price increase). Cash Only location. read more

Please do not order any customise birthday cake from this bakery, what they show in the picture and what they give you is different thing. And they insist just the color slightly different. They don't admit they screw up my daughter birthday and attitude is bad. The boss not even want to fix the issue. I won't buy anything from this liar anymore read more

Today, I bought big raisin toast sandwich, pork bun and taro buns. The cashier girl squeezed all in one small bag. I've asked her for bigger bag, but she want to save a bag for her boss so she answer "no bigger bag". I came here most of the time to buy bakery, so I know they do have big bags. Bad customer services!! Not coming back. *Suggestion- Tanbii Bakery staffs need to be train again for good "customer service" since they have many reviews regarding bad customer service. read more

To preface this review, I am probably slightly biased since I have been going to this bakery for birthdays for as long as I can remember. This bakery makes the best chocolate cake in all the lands. I moved to San Francisco and there are some aching days where my heart and stomach calls to it. I would move back if they gifted me a life time's supply of chocolate cake. Whenever I go home, I always get myself a "Treat Yo'self" Chocolate Cake. The cake is light, moist, and isn't too sweet. There are chocolate sprinkles on the edge and the interior is layered with chocolate frosting and more chocolate cake. I wish I was back in Rosemead right now. :'( read more
