My boyfriend bought me a cake for my birthday since I mentioned to him that this was the cake I my parents would always buy for me growing up. I even showed him where the location is at which is surprisingly near where he lives. Unfortunately, the cost of the cakes here massively skyrocketed which is pretty sad yet understandable since this is a small family business. Around $72 for a large rectangular sheet cake and $45 for the 8-inch cake. My boyfriend called in advance and asked for the small cake (assuming the 8 inch was the smallest), but ended up getting an even smaller cake haha. It was adorably cute and I shared with my parents. I have purchased pastries from Tanbii Bakery a long time ago. It's not a bakery I visit frequently. Most recently, a dear work colleague of mine mentioned that he buys the matcha green tea ice cream cake from here. He raved about how delicious it is. Thank you my friend. Well, I had to see it for myself. I came here this past weekend. This bakery is located in The Square Shopping Center in Rosemead. It's right on the left side after you enter through the glass doors before you head over to the Great Wall Supermarket. I saw an 8 inch Green Tea Ice Cream Cake for $45. I asked if they had a smaller size or even by the slice, but they don't have either. Oh well. Ice cream cakes require a freezer or be eaten as soon as possible. I was not near a freezer nor did I have the capacity of people to eat it right away. I'll have to figure out something next time to make it happen. You know I will LOL. Anyway, I walked around to check out the other pastries. It's not a very big bakery. I feel the pastry selections are quite limited IMHO. Their sponge cake is very small, but I still bought one. I also got a cream filled bun and two baked pastries... one with black bean filling and another with taro filling. I kept the sponge cake and black bean pastry and gave the other 2 pastries to my Mom. I will be back to try their green tea ice cream cake one day. CASH ONLY. This bakery has been here for decades since I was a child and still here through all the different market management changes. Not my favorite but convenient if you're already here for the market it's located right by the entrance/exit. The parking is parking lot war during weekends. I only really go in now to grab a rolled cake while leaving the market. They're moist, fluffy and not too sweet. Nothing to complain about. Been going to this bakery since I was a child. Still in disbelief that it's still there after all these years. Ever since I moved out of state, whenever I come home to visit my parents, I always try and come by this bakery to pick up some goodies. My childhood favorite pastry is the mung bean. Normally they would sell out during the mornings, so if you come to this bakery by the afternoon, there is a 50/50 chance they might have it. Tanbii is located inside the GW Market plaza. They sell all kinds of traditional Chinese baked goods and cakes. I went into pick up a Chinese cupcake but walked out with a few more things: coconut buns, taro buns, sponge cake, egg tarts and curry pies. Overall the baked items are good, especially the coconut buns. However I would pass on the egg tarts and sponge cake. The sponge cake was so dry, and the egg tart has a strange taste to it, like dirty water or dirty oil? I can't put my finger on it. It's made with a firm shortbread-like crust, rather than the flaky crust I am used to. I ended up tossing it because I didn't want to risk food poisoning. I was walking about of the market place when I saw this bakery and figured I'd give it a try since I was a little hungry. After I got in line, there was a large line behind me of at least 4 other customers with only 1 person working the register. I could tell some of them were regulars because of how the cashier treated those customers vs me (who's first time was this encounter). The store is very small but it had a good assortment of breads, sliced and whole, mooncakes since it's the season, cakes (regular versus ice cream). They even sound roll cakes and leaf wrapped rice in the fridge. A little strange on the leaf wrapped rice because it's a bakery but to each their own. I bought coconut raisin bread for $4.25. The bread is fairly large so I didn't think I was getting ripped off for it. The smaller individual breads were already $1.95, so I figured this would be a good choice. The bread had a good amount of raisins on it and you can definitely see the coconut and taste it. However, this bread was way too buttery/oily. I used the bag that it was in to rip a piece off and you can just see all the oil that is coming off of the bread. I'm a bit disappointment to see how much oil there was on it. I've had this bread at different establishments and it was never this oily. Overall, very standard bakery but just too much butter for the liking. read more

Really good custard filling!! I didn't have high expectations for this place, but I was pleasantly surprised by the custard in the bread. There was a lot of filling, not stingy like some other bakeries, so every bite was delicious! The actual bread was just okay. It was soft but not as chewy as I would've liked, and there was a slight burnt taste even though it didn't look charred at all? Solid Asian bakery place. This bakery is located inside the plaza with GW supermarket and closes fairly early, 6pm on Sunday and 5pm on other days. Make sure to bring cash because this place is cash only. We went on Sunday 5pm and they don't have that many selection for bread. There are 2 aisle for bread and basically there are only bread on 1 side. Recommend and love love love the coconut raisin bread. Size is very big, like 3-4 regular size bread and only cost $4.25. Worth it!! Flavor-wise is also delicious. Plenty of sweet coconut, they don't skimp, especially in the corners! Also tried the sponge cup cake for $1.95, it's OK. They also have birthday cake selection, rolls, and sliced cake, but we didn't try any. Over the years I have been a fan of Tanbii bakery since I was a kid. The quality and customer service drastically dropped. Every time I went to buy a slice of strawberry cake which cost $4.00 roughly. The strawberries are musty and broken apart. It is not fresh and it seems like they leave the cake for over 1 weeks. Today my parents and I went to buy a strawberry cake for special occasion. The cashier wants to sell us the white frosting strawberry cake that is dry up, musty, and broken apart for $38. Obviously I refused because the cake is not fresh and it seems like the cake has been there over a week. I told the cashier that I want a strawberry cake with pink frosting and I need it today by noon. The cashier said if you want to change color it will cost $3? I was like shocked since when did Tanbii change $3 extra for changing the frosting color? Been here for so many years and now they are selling me bad cakes and want to charge me for $3 extra. I said fine I do not mind paying $3 extra for changing the cake color. In total I pay $42 for a strawberry cake. The results of my strawberry cake was not what I expected. I always order the same thing and today they messed it up. The cake was dry and there was only 4 pieces of strawberries on top of my cake. The bottom of my cake was all pink and top part was all white. It looks weird. I paid $42 for it and honestly I felt like I got ripped off. I am never coming back to this bakery again. I fully understand why there is hardly customer in that bakery due to selling expired goods and bad cakes to customer. read more

They always take the time to carefully package my cake and offer candles and free happy birthday or happy holiday signs for the cakes free of charge. Can't say that everything is good and fresh, because I haven't tried everything, but the coffee and strawberry flavored cakes are great, light, fresh and airy. Staffers were OK, quick to greet, and was helpful in my purchase of my coffee flavored cake. My parents told me that every time they pass by this shop, it is always empty. Today was no different. There is an employee who monitors/ watches customers. The two times I've passed by, someone is out on the sales floor, keeping watch. I went in to buy a basic sponge cake for $1.70 which is high compared to other bakeries in the areas and given its depressing ambiance compared to JJ or KeeWah. My review was previously flagged as culturally insensitive so I will be as general as possible. I had such a negative experience with customer service. Please note if the shop is slow, the store employee will watch over you like a hawk. In my case, I have never experienced such an awkward exchange before. It is a shame because their baked goods are actually delicious and fresh in my experience. It's the customer service that will drive you away. read more

My wife being from Taiwan, we have had our fair share of pineapple cakes. Tanbii hands down has both of our votes for being one of the top. *the crust is thinner which allows a good portion of the center to be bitten off with the crust. The crust is by far of has one of the best texture- not too crumbly and not to soft. * the center is fresh and flavorful. Ours is the pineapple cake with the yolk inside. I wish I can put a -10 rating As I arrived at the bakery, I reached in to grab a loaf of taro bread and somehow no idea how tray got tilt and dropped to floor so reach down and pick up the bag, it ripped and bread falling down, told cashier bag is very thin and ripped so easily, she cleaned it up. Bought 2 loaf of coconut & 3 taro, 2 sponges and some other stuff almost $40 worth, so when I'm really to pay, cashier insisted that I must pay for the loaf that I dropped $4.75, because they can't sell it anymore, we argued and she said I must pay $4.75 and so I paid $4.75 and walked out empty handed and lost $4.75 read more

Received a box of egg-yolked centered treats and pineapple cakes, as a gift from a friend. They were cutely packaged, individually packed delights that were so delicious. It was a box of 12. I ate 10 of them in 2 days. I'm not ashamed. They're wonderfully flavorful, not overly sweet, and the texture, soft and chewy were right on point. I wish we had a Tanbii location in the Seattle Area -- we don't have access to something like this and when I return to LA I'll be sure to make a stop. I've been buying cakes and pastries from Tanbii for 30+ years.. They made quality stuff, from fruit-filled cakes with lightly whipped cream to Black Forest cakes, all are very good.. My favorite is the mango cakes, it has fresh diced mango inside and covered with sliced mango sheets outside, yummmmy! Their cookies are also very good, the almond thins are a must try.. The only one thing that I can't get used to is their tiramisu cakes, which is very heavy, contrast to all the other pastries they have.. But, hey, no one is perfect! Tanbii is an awesome traditional Chinese bakery. They have all the cakes you would expect at a Chinese bakery, you know the cream on the outside and strawberries in the middle type of cake, BUT they do it much better. The middle of there cake has this custard like filling mixed with the strawberries that makes the cake extra moist. There cakes are never dry and the whip cream is never too sweet. I love there taro cake, but what really put them over the top for me was my wedding cake. They did an fabulous job and it tasted great like always. I compare five different bakeries, Diamond Bakery, JJ Bakery, Cathy Bakery and Kee Wah Bakery. JJ was the most expensive even for a simple design, which I was looking for. Diamond had lots of choices, but when we did a tasting it really wan't memorable. Kee Wah's cake is too dry and Cathy didn't really do any designs. Our cake was beautiful, tasted great, and we even got a lot of compliments from our guests on the cake. Some of our guests even called me after the wedding to ask where I got the cake. One of my husband's friend had like 5 slices. Since the cake was so much cheaper than the other bakeries we ended up getting 4 tiers which could feed up more guests than we had, but everyone wanted second's because it was so good. I want that cake cake cake cake! My parents "surprised" me and bought my birthday cake at this little bakery shop located in the same plaza as the Square supermarket. I've been here a multiple times mainly for their cakes, but they do offer other pastries. What I really like about their cakes section is their wide selection. This is one of the few Asian bakeries I've seen that offers ice cream cakes and pudding cakes. Talk about yum! They ordered a mango pudding cake for me and I was excited for it because I am a huge fan of anything pudding in general. When I ate my first slice of this cake, I wasn't wowed by the taste, but I must say that their mango was fresh and their cake design was popping. It was the first time in my life I had a fruit and yellow pudding cake adorned with pink frosting on the sides. 4 stars for decorations and designs, but 3 stars for the quality and texture of the cake. I have been coming here pretty much all my life for pastries and cakes! The pastry items that I normally purchase here is the pork sung bun/roll and the pineapple/coconut tart. In my opinion, their pork sung bun is one of the best in town. The bun is filled with pork sung and there is a little bit of mayo in the center to help with the dryness. Other places do not have the mayo inside and would normally be more dry. My favorite and probably only cake that I get here is the mango cake which is the one with fresh mango all lined on the outside of the cake. The cake is usually vanilla with also mango and cream in the center. It's a must try! The prices have definitely gone up over the years due to inflation but I believe their cakes and pastries are still an affordable price. I do agree with the other comments on the employees of this place. They pretty much watch you while you're shopping to ensure that you aren't just going to walk out without paying. Also, don't touch the cake fridge doors because they will definitely stop you and make sure you don't open them! read more

To preface this review, I am probably slightly biased since I have been going to this bakery for birthdays for as long as I can remember. This bakery makes the best chocolate cake in all the lands. I moved to San Francisco and there are some aching days where my heart and stomach calls to it. I would move back if they gifted me a life time's supply of chocolate cake. Whenever I go home, I always get myself a "Treat Yo'self" Chocolate Cake. The cake is light, moist, and isn't too sweet.
