LOVE this place. Mary, the owner, has been there EVERY single time I've been there since I was 6. She's extremely friendly and really understanding if you don't speak Mandarin very well (much like myself). And even better yet, she doesn't hold it against you. Amaaaaaazing cakes. i.e. Taro (my mom swears by these), mango (I swear by these), crispy wafer (su-pe dàn go), and Japanese Cheesecake. Only place I have seen taro cakes, and it is mighty delicious....spongey cake with a layer of taro cream center....yummm... Their mango cake is adorable, thinly cut slices of mango cover the entire cake, overlapping, and the center is filled with mango and cream. Effin' foodgasm. Even more amaaaaazing prices. I believe the words "dirt cheap" and "free" come to mind. i.e. I'm quite sure their cakes start at like...$8.00 or something ridiculously cheap...their breads are around a dollar. You know, like free. No matter how "high flootin' I may be or become, there are some things that are just plain delicious and let no man put a asunder. Their fresh baked goods are frikkin' awesome, too. Their pineapple with cream inside and hot dog breads are my fave. My mom stalks them according to their baking schedule for this potato salad breads that are only made twice a day and always sold within the hour. I always bring their mini fruit tarts to any occasion (BBQ, bday, housewarming), they are easy finger foods, delicious, visibly appealing..and THREE FOR ONE DOLLAR. Every single bakery I've ever been too charges at least $2.00 for one single tart. They are filled with delicious creamy custard and topped with either a kiwi, strawberry, or mango slice. They may have additional fruits. The catch is that you have to order at least one day before; they make a standard stock for the day....but that is usually sold out by mid day also. The amazing thing about Cathy's is that their cakes and desserts are not overly sweet. Perfect for asians, in my opinion...since you know how much they like to "suffer" and not "overindulge" in things...and anything "too sweet" or "too salty" would be off the table. Their frosting is the frothy, airy typical asian frosting...not my cup of tea, but some is good. Their cakes are extremely moist, savory, and fluffy; the way it's supposed to be. ha. tiny bakery that if you didn't know about you'd for sure drive past. i've never tried their flaky sponge/taro cake that i see reviews about. side note - they have interesting cake decorations, i've even seen a cake shaped as a hamburger! i usually stop here when my relatives are over and i want to get them some afternoon treats. this past weekend, i went and got an assortment of little mousse cakes. selection is poor here, there weren't many options which is why we decided on the mousse cakes. also, the worst part about this bakery is they don't seem to speak anything other than mandarin! such a struggle just to find out what flavors the cakes were. i'd recommend bringing a translator if you ever venture here. read more

We were at a restaurant across the street and the person who was supposed to bring cake showed up without one. We panicked because we didn't not want to have cake to celebrate my uncle's 60th birthday. A quick Yelp search showed this was close by. We walked in 10 min before closing and bought 2 8 inch cheesecakes and candles for a whopping $23. I've gotten several cakes from them and they have all been delicious! Their cakes are light, moist and not too sweet. I usually order the fruit cake with strawberry fillings. They're definitely not skimpy with the fruits, that's for sure. Typically, the frosting on most cakes are too sweet for me, but not these. I actually don't mind eating the frosting because it's not dry. The service here isn't bad either. Sure, there is an issue with communication, as their English isn't proficient, but I was able to get my order through to them and they were accommodating with what I want and I usually get the cake earlier than their estimated time. This bakery is now the one I go to for all my cakes. Their cakes are superb and service is good as well. And an added bonus, it's close to my house. read more

I used to come here all the time with my mommy, back before the internet was popular... lol I'm old. I think the manager here's name is Mary and she and my mom were good friends so she always gave us some extra bread. My ultimate favorite thing here is the sheet cake with the crispy middle. Cathy's Bakery has the best, best, best of these things. They are pro at making this. A long time ago, they had these black sesame twisted deep fried cookie things. I don't know if they have them anymore, but they are bomb as f. If they do, and you know what I'm talking about, you should definitely try it! The parking lot's pretty small and dangerous since it's right on las tunas--ugh I almost always get into car accidents--and also the bakery may look a little small and run down but it's been there since before I was born!!! I only come here for their Flaky layered sponge cake. Nothing else. Every time i head down to LA with my family, we always drop by Cathy's bakery to pick up a few boxes of these sponge cakes. It basically consist of sponge cake with a flaky pastry on top, and layered on top of another. I don't know where else you can find this kind of cake but its deliciousssssssss. I believe it originated from Taiwan...? I've yet to try anything else that they offer, but from reading other reviews, it doesn't seem to be any different than your average Chinese bakery with your fruit cakes, ham and cheese toast, etc. read more

I took the strawberry cake to a birthday party and it was a hit. Everyone loved it - I was so happy. The white cake was light, fluffy, and delicious with lots of big strawberry pieces and whipped cream. Beautiful decor on top. I am sure to return to this bakery. And there is something the owner did for me that I will never forget. This place was cash only: When I didn't have enough cash (and no checkbook) she handed me the cake and asked me to pay another day. I said of course I would and offered to leave my watch and a $20 bill but she wouldn't take either items because she said I may need cash for something else! Now i'm not sure if I love this bakery. I've never had a problem with their cakes. I ate a piece of leftover cake 2 days later after I bought it and it had this strange chalky taste in the frosting that made me want to gag. OMG sao bing stuffed with beef and pickled mustard. This must be one of the best things I've ever ate. There's so much flavor in the beef and it marries perfectly with the absolutely delicious pickled mustard. The sao bing is flaky and buttery, loaded with sesame seeds on top. Just perfect. Grew up eating baked goods from here so it always has a place in my heart. My family loves the Crispy Sponge Cake (Su Pi Dan Gao) which has crispy layer sandwiched by sponge cake and the right amount of cream. It's $12 for a box that can probably feed 10+ people. Not toooo sweet just like how Asian people like it :) Other than that, their bread is whatevs. Cakes are decent too. But their selection isn't as good as other Asian bakeries out there. Cathy Bakery makes my all time favorite dessert....Crispy Cake (su pi dan gao)! The texture of the cake is always light and fluffy, and stuffed in between are layers of thinly fried (...err, I think they're fried) filo dough. Like most Asian bakeries, their cakes are never overly sweet, so even if you feel like splurging on your diet and having a second slice...it won't weigh you down (but I can't guarantee you will be able to stop at 2 slices). For birthdays, I usually order their crispy cake and ask them to add fresh mango slices all over, with some additional fresh fruit for decoration...and I am always the biggest hit at parties. Order 24 in advance. For around $15, you can also buy a box of pre-sliced crispy cake with no whip cream any time. If you come in at the right time during the day, they also make the crispy cake in a form of a roll as well for only a few dollars, but they make limited quantities of these...so get them while you can and call me if you feel like sharing! =) read more

As far as asian fruit cakes are concerned, I'd definitely come back to buy one. To be honest, though, every single asian cake follows the same formula; fluffy cake, cream, and an assortment of fruit both inside and on top of the cake. This place is no different, and they do it well, so no complaints. I bought the gigantic mango cake for my friend's birthday. Mango slices inside, covered in thin mango sheets, with some strawberries, cherry tomatoes (for decoration purpose I guess...because they're red? o_0), and a fancily peeled mango on top. Tried this cake once when someone at work brought the strawberry and whipped cream cake in. I don't really care for Chinese cakes, but felt like I should try it. And i'm SO GLAD I did! Cathy's Bakery cakes are so moist and soft- the sponge cake is just sweet enough, and not too sweet, the cream isn't oily and overpowering either. Highly recommend this cake! Cathy's also has the traditional 'serve yourself' deli rolls and breads- and a very nice selection for such an unassuming location. One of their breads resembled a square of cake, and since I was in the mood for cake, was pleasantly surprised that it might have been the same that is used in the cakes, but without the whipped cream. Yum! There was fresh wheat and white toast bread coming out of the back that is nice and fresh, and soft-- noticed that the slices were a bit thinner than regular, which is really good, since I think that once you put two of the fatter slices together (and not the thick slices) there is way too much bread. Way to go Cathy's! Parking is okay, but to get there is a bit hairy since there's alot of road construction. Also, cash only people! They did have fruit tarts available when I went- without preordering-- this was on a Saturday afternoon. This place used to be good, but gone are those days. I went in to buy a coffee roll- I asked for one on the inside of the display case, knowing they would try to sell the old ones first. The lady got pissed and told me they're all the same. I politely insisted on the inside one, so she gave me a dirty look, grabbed all 4 coffee rolls from the case, mixed them up and handed me one. I should have just left then, but I thought maybe they really were all the same. The coffee roll turned out to be an old one, and it was way more than just a day old- we literally choked on how dry it was. It was powdery dry and inedible. We ended up just tossing it. Totally love this place, my mom was here before I was even born. XD it's definitely THE place to get Taro Cakes - my mom loves taro and their cakes are made FRESH daily. Quality is amazing and well, MARY the owner is the most darling little Taiwanese lady ever! Her English is exceptional and shes buddies with my mom. I love her AND the cakes she makes. Their mango cake was absolutely delicious! If you love mangoes, this will be the best cake you've ever tasted in your entire life. Most chinese bakeries have very little real mangoes on their mango cake, but Cathy's Bakery piles it onto their delicious cake. Their small mango cake was enough to feed about 20 people and cost around $25. I am not a big fan of cakes in general (usually, I feel that all cakes taste about them same), but the mango cake at Cathy's Bakery really did stand out. Light, not too sweet ,and refreshing! Yum! I don't know when this place got kinda run down...but I used to love coming here for cakes and asian pastries. But the last few times I've come here to pick up cakes (which are still as good as they were before), the pastry selection was rather pathetic. As for breads, i'm sure this bakery is pretty good. But as for cheesecakes and level of pushiness, I'd rather NOT. I pointed and asked for the price of the cheesecakes, to which the lady behind the counter grabbed the cheesecake and started bagging it! I asked the price lady! I later did purchase the cheesecake, but was SOOOOOOOO DISAPPOINTED. It was lacking everything the notorious cheesecake is so historically known for. It was bland, wasn't rich in any sense of the word and left me wanting....which is not the point of a cheesecake. Actually, even THINKING about that cheesecake pisses me off. Bottomline, would laugh at the notion of returning for cheesecake. five stars for my favorite cake. It is this two layer cake with a flaky, crispy phyllo in the middle. I always call in an order just to make sure they have one for me. The one thing I learned from here is I seriously need to brush up on my mandarin or learn the names of cakes. I wanted to get a fruit cake with that clear jelly on top, and although hard time explaining and between the english and mix of chinese, I did manage to survive. Overall, the cake was pretty good. The thing i love about asian bakeries is that the cake is never super sweet, and we get a lot of fruit :). The ladies there were really nice and somewhat patient with me. Really there was just a language barrier. I probably should've just pointed at a cake on display, but my parents really wanted that "shui jing dan gao." I also forgot cash that day, so luckily I was able to just reserve and pay the next day. The pricing on the cakes are also relatively cheap. I got a 8" cake for $15, which in comparison to like other bakeries like 85 degrees, JJ bakery.. etc., is not bad at all. However, I guess the cake I got was also on the simpler side. I think I will give this place another try and try the cakes they're known for, since after reading some of the other reviews it sounds pretty good! read more
