Came here for cake tasting after a mix up with an online appointment at the El Monte HQ. They were able to prepare samples pretty quickly and we now know what cake we will order. But, we were told that due to the heat, they were not able to prepare butter cream so it was all whip cream. So, the lesson is that you can come to the Monterey Park store almost unannounced and they can do cake a tasting. I mainly come here for their cake rolls. They're only $12.75, and I like that they package them in a nice box since I often buy them as gifts. The cake rolls are moist and not too sweet. They have several flavors, but my favorite is the coffee roll. It pairs perfectly with a hot cup of coffee. I like having it for breakfast or dessert. I don't usually buy their pastries or bread because I think they're overpriced compared to other similar bakeries. Recently, I tried their Napoleon and it was delicious. It was crispy on the outside with a soft layer in the middle. I also tried their ube crinkle cookie for the first time. While it was good, the texture wasn't really like a cookie; it was more cake-like, similar to a madeleine. I wouldn't get it again. read more

This bakery has been around for as long as I can remember, at least since the 1980's! Their cakes and pastries have always been consistent, no frills. Service is pretty quick as it's not real busy at times. When there's 3-4 customers, it does take a bit longer to get served but not that big of a deal. What I do appreciate about their products is that they're not so sweet to the point of a sugar overload. They do custom cakes and also wedding cakes. The interior is pretty dated, still looks the same as it did in the 80's! This place is a to go business, no seating, no coffee. I think this bakery is hit or miss? They have a lot of really good-looking cakes in the bakery case. I needed a cake, so I stopped in. It def smells good inside! I got a 6" tiramisu cake that cost $30. It looked pretty, but I thought it tasted ok. It had a good sweetness level. The cake had alternating layers of jelly-mousse stuff with coffee cake. The top was creamy and had a layer of cocoa powder. I saw a chicken pot pie in the case next to the register and decided to try it for ~$3. It was warmed and delicious !!!! The layers were flaky and buttery. The inside chicken pot pie didn't burn my mouth, and it was a good savory taste. This was a nice surprise from a bakery visit. Bakers spoke English. Great baked goods for reasonable prices. I disagree with some of the reviews below that are trying to take them to task simply for keeping up with the times! The value for what you get is good, as the sizes are VERY generous compared to many other bakeries. The sponge cupcake is HUGE--at least 1.5 if not 2x the size of others. The red bean bun is also at least 1.5-2x the size with 2-3x the filling! Loved the taro bread and their raisin bread has the most generous amount of raisins I've had--again, almost double of other bakeries. Any milk bread-based product is amazing. The staff are very friendly and efficient. They had a variety of beautifully designed cakes like a Labubu and a Durian-shaped Durian cake! Definitely recommend this place! I am so happy this place is still open! My mom used to bring us here during the weekends so we can get egg tarts and pastries to snack on for the week. That was nearly over 25 years ago! We really enjoy their egg tarts, cocktail buns, pork floss buns, and sesame balls. We weren't huge fans of the bbq pork bun, the bread itself was good but the cuts of pork were a little fatty. Do note that they make everything in house so assortment and stock of baked goods will depend on the time of day and day of the week you go! They also do custom cakes and they have a binder full of examples you can choose from. I haven't ordered a custom cake before but I've gotten one of their other layered cakes for my grandma for one of her birthdays; I remember her liking it! The people behind the counter mostly speak Cantonese but can understand English. They're usually really nice regardless of what language you speak (: Try to bring cash! If not, there's a $10 minimum for card. Also, their card reader wasn't working when I went and thankfully I had some cash on hand. I'd bring some cash just in case! Is it the fanciest bakery? We used this bakery for our wedding cake and were deeply disappointed by what amounted to bait-and-switch behavior. Because we had guests with dietary restrictions, we specifically requested a cake that was both gluten-free and vegan before booking. We confirmed this requirement multiple times -- in person, over the phone, and in writing -- months in advance. This was a condition of our choosing them; we would not have booked otherwise. Less than a week before our wedding, they informed us the cake could only be one or the other -- gluten-free or vegan, but not both. By that point, switching bakeries was not an option. We were forced to split the cake into two separate tiers just to accommodate our guests, adding unnecessary stress to an already demanding day. Taking a deposit and confirming a service repeatedly, only to change the terms days before the event, is dishonest. We will not be returning and cannot recommend this business. read more

It's so easy to pass by this shopping center and not realize that a bakery is there, but Diamond Bakery is not one you should overlook! I decided to try several different pastries, including the taro bun, pineapple bun, an egg tart, Portuguese style egg tart and a Danish bun. Out of all of these, the Portuguese style egg tart is the most delicious! It has the perfect balance of sweetness and flavorful custard, and the crispy dough was an amazing combination to complete this egg tart. The pineapple bun is also really delicious! The flavor was profound and spread out through all of the bun, and the break had a great chewy texture. The taro bun was a good pastry, though the taro flavor was on the lighter side. However, the bread itself was fresh and enjoyable. The egg tart was decent, but there wasn't really any sweetness in the custard. This may be the style of this bakery, so if you like egg tarts that are lighter on sweetness, this one may be one you like! Lastly, the Danish bun was the only bread which I felt underwhelmed with. I expected some cream in the filling, but sadly it was just bread. The bread was okay, but not worth the price when you can get better options like the Pineapple bun! We had cake tasting here for our wedding cake and were able to work with the manager Shay! The cakes were delicious! We tried to white cake with strawberry, mango mousse sponge cake, red velvet with cream cheese and the cappuccino cake. My two favorites were the signature strawberry cake and the mango mousse cake. I killed those. The red velvet was dry and regular. The cappuccino cake was delicious, but I am not a coffee drinker so I couldn't see myself serving it at my wedding! Shay was super helpful. There was lots of activity going on that day (Friday). Lots of people picking up cakes, fruit tarts, etc. The staff were busy and everyone seemed happy with their orders! Small place. When you walk inside, the bakery has displays filled with their signature cakes as well as cakes with custom designs (including a realistic durian cake too). I decided to come here for a birthday cake and I got quoted $50 for my Jellycat birthday cake that I could pick up within the next day. It is a little pricey considering it is just a regular strawberry cake with feet and a face. However, Sandy helped me make sure I got exactly what I was looking for. Went to get bread for my cousins' kids and was looking for the special bread loaf that is only sold here as far as I know. They sell specially flavored loaves like taro or coconut (there are 3, but I didn't get a picture as they freshly bake it in the morning and were still bagging it at 3ish). These loaves come uncut where you cut it yourselves to your desired width. It reminds me of the Asian toasts you can get at some boba cafes. Overall, they don't have the fancier new items like 85C where they go more European styles, but they definitely have their own takes of old Asian style breads. So, if you are looking for dependable traditional breads, this place is a reliable place to get fresh bread. Also, I attest to them baking a lot of fresh bread as I sadly have a recent bread allergy where I can feel nauseated when near a lot of bread (and I can't eat them anymore) - I don't feel that way in all bakeries (I.r. Perfectly fine in 85C bakery), but I definitely felt it here! I'm saying that as a good thing as you know they've been baking lots! It's also not based on size of bakeries as I've been fine in a lot of bakeries in general. I did try the bread before I developed the allergy and I definitely do think the bread here is pretty good. We've been coming here for their famous Mango cake for ages! The price has definitely home up but the quality is still just as good! Our favorite must get cake for any celebration is their famous Mango cake where you have thin slices of mango surrounding the entire cake topped with assorted fresh fruit. Normally it's white cake with fresh mangoes in the inside but we prefer customizing it with chocolate cake with fresh fruit inside (mango or strawberry) I was able to place my order, the day before, over the phone very easily. This was one of the worst bakeries around and I can see why other bakeries are preferred. I needed a birthday cake at the last minute and as the recipient loves taro cakes, I came here. Luckily for me they did have one available. The color of the cake was not to my style as it was a bright purple. Much like the styling of cakes from the 80s. I figured I could get over the color and the lack of styling on the cake. When I asked for candles, they said they could only give me... 2. Basically saying they want me to buy their candles. Brought the cake home and we were cutting the cake to serve. And inside is just a lump of taro paste. Just sitting in the middle. Not layered throughout - just dumped in the center. The cake tasted so bad and was so unappetizing that no one ate more than their first bite. I think a cake purchased from the grocery store would have tasted better. I should have known to stay away when I saw the bright purple coloring on the cake. Lesson learned. read more
