This was one of my fave's growing up.... My mom used to send me there for Kaiser rolls every evening right when they were done making them .... let me tell you by the time arrived home there was not much left! Hot delicious fresh bread .... I love to go to Catania Bakery for my cookies and cakes, but today when I went there to get cookies I was highly dissatisfied/disappointed because they had gnats / flies in the cookies /cakes case!! And they some were on the cookies! When I noticed, I immediately told the lady behind the counter that you guys have gnats in the case, I don't want them. She gave me an annoyed look and said, so you don't want the cookies? I told her, no I am sorry but I don't want them cause gnats and flies were on them, and I left the store. So please anyone who goes there, please, please look out for flies and gnats, as it is very unsanitary and I wouldn't want anyone to get sick from that. Shame you on Catania Bakery for not being more sanitary. I had to give one star otherwise they wouldn't let me post my review, but in my book it's a minus star. read more

Order a six foot hero for a party. Ordered it a week in advanced and paid in full. When the day arrived to pick it up they did not have the hero ready and apparently they had no more bread to make. I mean seriously if I take my time to go there In advanced and pay for the whole thing it's because I really needed it. My whole party was focused on presenting a six foot hero with three different fillings and you guys couldn't even deliver on my expectations for you guys. Really rude girl working there this morning. Totally unhelpful, unwilling to answer a simple question and a really bad attitude. Sad . Going back to Grimaldi's where I get service with a smile from a happy crew! Come on now..., if you have to go in the back to ask " the boss" if your sliced bread can go in a plastic bag rather than paper ( I'm traveling on a 4 hr train ride, explained) , and keep the customer waiting 9 minutes , with a long line behind me , well that's just dumb . I'm never around in Ridgewood, and neither do I really go around for Italian pastries. But here I was rolling around with family in dire need for a cake. We saw the supermarket across the street, and figured I could probably get a premade cake at their bakery or something. But as I walked from the van towards the supermarket I saw this bakery open, so I figured I'd give it a try. And I'm so glad I did. I got in right before the place closed and grabbed a vanilla and chocolate cake. The girls inside got the writing all done very fast and were incredibly friendly. The cake tasted great, which was important for our family since we haven't eaten traditional cakes for a while, always finding them lacking in flavor or far too heavy. Pastry Haven Just ate the most delicious filled donut type pastry, called an Ennis, that was a close second to a Cronut. The Ennis is the best thing I've ever eaten besides Cronuts! I really wanted to like this bakery! When I stepped inside, the cakes and treats all looked so delicious. I needed an affordable cake for a party. As it was my first time there, I had no idea what was what. I asked for help from one of the girls at the counter. It seemed like each time I had a question for her about the cakes, the girl either looked annoyed or was having a conversation with someone else. It looks like most of the girls working there are young, so they may not be the most professional individuals, but I think the service could have been way better. The girl said that they don't have cupcakes or mini versions of their cakes, so there was nothing I could buy to taste and see the quality of their baking. I ended up putting in an order for a strawberry shortcake. I asked several times and was told several times that the inside filling of the cake had just fresh diced strawberries with whipped cream, and not strawberry jam. When I picked up the cake, it looked so pretty! We kept it refrigerated until it was time to cut it. When we cut into it, the cake slices crumbled and just fell apart. And to my surprise, the inside filling WAS reduced strawberry jam. But worst of all, the cake tasted absolutely HORRIBLE! It was not even sweet, just had a bitter dusty taste to it, and the strawberry filling was also tart and bitter. No one at the party enjoyed the cake; what an embarrassment! I know I took a risk buying a cake from a bakery for the first time, and it was such a disappointment. I really don't know if I will go back to this bakery considering this everlasting impression I have of it :( read more

According to their ingredient list, the bread contains Azodicarbonamide- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azodicarbonamide. It's banned in Europe and may cause asthma. Also, their butter cookies were decent but stale and very artificial tasting. I won't be back here. Ok...listen to Frankie Ravioli:....if I was on death row, I would want a cannoli and a double espresso from Catania....This cannoli is everything you want it to be, and should be....The shell is crispy, never soggy, cause they fill them only when you order. It's aggressive to give a place 5 stars based on only one tasting, but I'm going out here on this limb to say this is the best NY cheesecake I've had. Not like sticking a fork into a brick of cream cheese, this cheesecake is fluffy and light then melts on your tongue. Now just have to figure out how to get it to Jersey City. read more

I've lived near ridgewood my whole life so I am pretty accustomed to all things that are Catania bakery, but for whoever is not- delicious bread and awesome pastries. Nearby Russo's or grimaldi's cannot come close in comparison to the pastries at Catania. The cannoli's are great, so are the tricolor cookies, butter cookies, gelato, pignoli cookies and if their is anything you HAVE to try it is the "INIS" (sicilian doughnuts with cannoli cream filling dusted in cinnamon sugar- I know, right!!) and "cassatedde" ( Sicilian dough turnovers with cannoli filling). My family has a pasticceria in Sicily and when I want a pastry that brings me back, this is where I come :) read more

Catania bakery is well known for a couple of things. To start, their cartocci are to die for and they were in the paper for them. So if you go there be sure to try one! Also their bread is amazing. This is my favorite bakery in Queens....their cannoli cream pastries are devine, and I don't even usually like sweets. I love that green pastry with the chocolate chip cannoli cream inside topped with white frosting and a cherry....it looks weird, but it's delicious! Their rainbow cookies with cannoli cream inside are also delicious. My boyfriend loves their butter cookies, but my one complaint is that they are really expensive. $5 buys 5 small cookies - they definitely just need to be priced better. read more

We used to live right around the corner from this place and I would get coffee and croissant for breakfast. Now we live one more subway stop away, and often make the 1/2 mile trek (despite having closer bakeries) just for those two things. Best Italian cookies and pastries in Ridgewood and pretty much anywhere else. Yes, better than Veniero's or anything I've had in Little Italy. I've never seen cannoli-cream stuffed rainbow cookies before. Marzipan cakes, butter cookies, and assorted tarts have all been fresh and delicious. They recently started offering gelato -- try the watermelon. I only wish they had a bigger selection of bread, but I also live close to Grimaldi's, so I've got my carb bases well covered. read more

I went to this bakery to buy rainbow cookies. I asked the young lady behind the counter for three pounds of rainbow cookies. She just threw a bunch of rainbow cookies into the box and placed it on the scale. She tossed more cookies on top to make it there pounds. After taking the box off the scale, the box would not close. So the server used her hand and pressed really hard on top of the cookies to make the box close. Box would not close. She went to get a larger box and then threw the cookies inside. Server again used her hand to smash the cookies down. I told the lady to bring me the box. As I looked at the cookies, the rainbow cookies were now rainbow crumbs. Most of the cookies were now broken and crumbs. I yelled at the server and asked why she could not packed the cookies nicely. She had no answer. I told the young lady that I saw her throw the cookies in both boxes and smash them with her hand. Then I yelled at her, told her to get another box. I told the lady to pack this new box nicely with the rainbow cookies from the tray in the display case. She had the nerve to ask why I didn't want the box of cookies in front of me. I told the server that this box is full of cookie crumbs and that I did not want to pay for a box of garbage crumbs. She did pack a new box nicely with the rainbow cookies from the tray in the display case. As I paid by credit card, this server threw a pen at me to sign the credit card slip. After I signed the credit card slip, I threw the pen back at her. When I got my receipt, I looked to make sure she charged me correctly for three pounds of rainbow cookies.
