Staying in town for the night with my family so we decided to try something local instead of a chain. Tried to call twice around 5PM to ask if we could get seated but no response. Decided to go in anyways and see what's up. When I got there the server greeted me nicely and told me it'd be a 30-40min wait. I could tell they were pretty busy. Since I saw many great reviews we decided to stay and wait for a table. We got seated in 35min and quickly got our order in. After that service was a little slow but we understood since it was full. I know everyone says this but I genuinely hate giving poor reviews, especially for local businesses. However, I do feel my experience warrants feedback to the owners in hopes they can improve for future customers. My husband and I visited this past Friday around 545pm, surprisingly it was already pretty busy and a line for tables was beginning to form. My husband waited in the entryway for about 8-10 minutes, unacknowledged. People actually walked in behind my husband and were greeted before he was, which was incredibly odd and rude. There were only 3 front of house staff working and they were running around - with what seemed like 0 organization or system. We put our name and number in for a table outside and were quoted at 20 minutes. We watched as others came in, some to get a table and some for takeout. It seems like they were prioritizing takeout more than customers dining in. 35+ minutes went by and still no table. We got to a point where we were gonna order takeout and leave but figured we'd already waited so we'd stick it out. We watched as tables began to clear out, but instead of bussing them to make room for more tables the servers were chatting it up with a few select tables - I assumed locals since they were joking about stuff in town. Another 10 mins passes and we were staring at the empty tables. A server offered for us to sit at one which we did then ordered right away. After we ordered we sat without drinks for 5 minutes. The couple that came right after us got called for a table. We watched as they sat and ordered drinks. Several minutes later, the host finally called my husband to be sat (not knowing another server sat us solely because we stayed in front staring). Had we not done that, the people that arrived AFTER us would have been sat 10 mins prior already enjoying food. Complete lack of a system. We ordered tacos and a sandwich that shouldn't have taken long, yet another 30 mins passed by. The couple we sat after us ordered an appetizer and entrees, of which they prioritized their appetizer before our food (tho we had already been waiting for some time). When our food came, the order was slightly wrong but we were too hungry to care so we ate it. Everything was average at best and lacked flavor. We couldn't wait to get the check and leave. All in all, this place was clearly understaffed and had 0 organization - from the hosting, to the timing of food, to the clearing of tables. Everything was just off. Not to mention what was most irritating was the clear preferential treatment for locals. While we were leaving, we saw a couple that came in 15 mins after us, already eating their food at one of the tables near a heater. Yet we got stuck waiting a ridiculous amount of time only to be sat in the cold and essentially ignored. I can't even imagine what this place is like during peak season if they can't handle a steady pace Friday night in the spring. I hope the owner can hire more people and improve because the outdoor area itself is cute and it's prime location on the marina. But visitors beware. read more

Service was disappointing as server had no clue what beers were on tap or how the food was prepared, then gave me the wrong info several times, leading to heavy disappointment. Once my food was delivered I didn't see her again until she delivered the check, and I had to ask 2x for a to-go container. The restaurant itself was dark and dreary, seating drab and uncomfortable. The fish and chips, however, were quite lovely. The fish was rockfish fried in a beer batter, but the 3 pieces of fish were thick and the batter thin and airy and flavorful. Reading the reviews I think service can be spotty... but also don't come to a seafood restaurant and complain about the chicken and burgers ya know? Place was pretty busy, sat on the patio, it was beautiful outside. Had the margarita and the Catalyst Mule... both excellent and only $9. Had 4 oyster shooters, popcorn shrimp, 3 crab tacos and 3 fish tacos with mango salsa. Fish was cooked to perfection. Mango slaw was great. Total was $74. We are from California where you can't get that much food and 2 drinks for less than $100 so I think the prices are super fair. Everything was so fresh. Someone mentioned it's all frozen. Sounds like a disgruntled former employee. Maybe the popcorn shrimp were but the fish, crab and oysters were as fresh as it gets! Will definitely be back for seafood! read more

We love Catalyst Seafood. First - I do need to post a small disclaimer. Catalyst has become our traditional first dinner place after completing the annual Wild Rogue Relay. The WRR is a 220 mile relay race that ends in Brookings, so when we finish that, I am hungry as hell, and might be a touch delirious. Nevertheless, my family is in accord with the positive 5-star rating, so there you go. When you're in Brookings, it just seems like you ought to go for the local seafood. I mean, you're on the coast, right? So, it doesn't make sense to go to a chicken taco joint. Anyway, Catalyst has a vast array of seafood choices, including soups and their latest catch. This is what I find interesting. They serve what they actually catch themselves. How cool is that? And the preparation is great. Good portion sizes for reasonable price. I like that they have a rather interesting seasonal Crab menu (crab pizza! crab-topped steak!). A lot of the seafood options are also in the $10-14 range, which is quite budget friendly. I imagine the annual dining tradition will continue with Catalyst for many years to come. read more

Rude is an understatement! The service was straight up horrible!! My family & I wanted this place to be a lunchtime win, but ended up "meh" from the visit itself. Moreover, I hate dinging a family business given the roller coaster of BS coming from operating during a COVID scare. Opinion was further torpedoed by my likely getting food poisoning from the crab tacos I ordered. Without a TLDR break-down, they were ordered just by me & only I ate them. I ingested no other food prior to/after this meal. I'm no First 48 Detective but that quickly pointed to that one dish. To their credit, at the time of our meal the crab looked a-ok & had no odd smell/taste. The rest of my family rated their fish tacos & the fish & chips as about a 6.5 - 7.0 on a 10 scale. So, it wasn't horrid but nothing to do cart wheels over either. The fish & chips had a good crispy breading initially, but the pooled grease (about 2 tsp. worth) in the basket quickly turned the fish undersides to mush. Imma fat kid, & love me some fried food, but there's a right way & a wrong way to deep fry. Beyond all that, our waitress was Joy. Great disposition, very charismatic, & a friendly sparkle in her eyes. But, collectively the wait staff proved not too great in multi-tasking. They over looked requested drink refills, or walked from point A to point B right past customer's empty dishes or drinks. The beer I asked to be served w/our food landed on the table 15 minutes before the food. I'm not a restauranteur, but I eat out a crap ton (hellooo high BP) when on vacation. Price per portion is absolutely reasonable considering how fresh and perfectly plated each dish was. Don't even get me started on customer service! The wonderful blonde woman who was our waitress? (COVID had us doing pickup only) was an absolute wonder! She was cheerful and incredibly patient with us considering we didn't know what we wanted lol. She made sure to communicate with all of us in the car and she got our order 100% correct without even writing anything down. Overall, please eat here!!! We ordered the special crab pasta dish (really tasty), kids fish and chips (amazing!), kids cheeseburger (the 7 year old loved it) and a steak dinner. The steak we ordered medium rare came out medium well. I loathe sending food back to the kitchen, but the server who had checked in with us quickly after delivering food wanted to check in with the chef because we had informed her that the steak was over cooked. A lemon drop martini with premium alcohol was $26 - $2 for happy hour = $24. Are you serious!! Burger was $16. Nice little oceanside restaurant perfect for filling that fresh seafood craving! Catalyst has their own fishing operation which supplies their canning operation as well as the restaurant. The fish and chips I ordered were delicious and fresh! The fries and tartar sauce were perfect compliments. I washed it down with a local craft beer which was part of a nice beer/drink menu from their bar. As we were being seated I seen a clam chowder bread bowl being cleared off a table and I thought YUM! As I looked at the menu it became more and more clear that I would be getting a bread bowl. A majority of the menu was fry. None of it said it was caught locally or said the kind of fish that was being presented. A big giveaway that it's nothing special. We ordered fried oysters, surf and Turf and a chowder bowl with fries on the side. Since the place was packed we knew it was going to take a little while. The appetizer and chowder bowl with fries arrived but without my wife's surf & turf. The waitress gave that blank stare like oh crap I forgot something... and said the entire would be here any minute. So my wife decided to order another drink from the bar. My daughter and I tried waiting but the food was getting cold.. we ate & the leftover fries were cold and my wife's drink was empty by the time her meal came out. The Clam Chowder Bowl! It was served in a sourdough roll with a garlic butter fried top for dipping! Hunger is the master spice of all. The first few bites with the butter fried top were awesome. Then I tasted the chowder and it was thick and tasted like flour. The clams & potatoes were sparse and the bacon felt like you were eating it raw. I went to peal off a piece of the bowl to dip and they neglected to heat the bread up in the oven before putting the chowder in it. The bread was stale and dry, like when you pull sourdough out of a plastic bag and try and eat it. The bowl was uneatable and then that flashed my memory of the chowder bowl I noticed when I walked in. The bowl was untouched and now I know why. Short story long, I couldn't even finish the chowder bowl it was gross. 15 min later when my wife's meal when it did come out was decent. The steak was cooked medium and the shrimp weren't overcooked. Our waitress was the bartender. She was busy but she never came around except to give us the bill and pick up the credit card asap so she could refill the table as fast as possible. It would have been nice if my wife's drink was comped or something. The mistake was never acknowledged. An apology goes a long ways with mistakes. Everyone knows you don't serve part of a table there food and make someone wait 15 minutes watching there table mates eating. By no means is this place a 3-4 star place on it's best day. I eat out with my 14-year-old daughter but she write the review. Enjoy her thoughts: We drove a few minutes from our hotel to the place. It was raining out, and kinda cold (I forgot to bring a jacket so I was extra chilly). The inside walls were painted a deep blue, with an accent wall made to look like a classic wood ship hull. The overall vibe had a clear upscaled seafood aesthetic. I ordered the grilled shrimp and chips, which was amazing. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and the seasoning had just the right amount of old bay. The fries had some fire seasoning that it reminded me of an elevated McDonalds fries (in a good way). In general shrimp and chips tends to be good, but kinda bland, so the extra seasoning was appreciated. Out waitress was very nice. Not necessarily revolutionary, but very pleasant. Absolutely horrible experience. From the moment we walked in I could tell the servers didn't want us there. They greeted and sat people who came in behind us. Then one waitress looked around and acted flustered like she didn't know where to seat us, despite 4 tables being open. She finally seated us (2 people), brought us water, then seated another couple behind us. She returned shortly and took their order, all while looking at us. Several servers saw us sitting, waiting, with menus, and quickly rushed around. It felt like they were purposely avoiding us. After about 10 minutes, the table behind us received their food. The waitress looked right at me, made eye contact, gave them their food, then grabbed a rag and started cleaning a table that had already been cleaned. At that point we walked out. No attempt was ever made to take our order, and they went out of their way to ignore us. I wish I could say the food was good as it had been recommended, but the service was god awful and the ambiance was very hostile. read more
