I visited 6 wineries on this Paso Robles trip and this was probably my least favorite. The wines weren't that great and the service was sub-par. The location isn't bad, this place was basically down the street from our hotel (La Bellasera). They have pretty nice seating right near a large field of vines. There are some good photo opportunities around. But I primarily came here to taste the wine and the majority of the wine wasn't good. I had the mixed tasting, and I really didn't like their whites. Very fruity and sour. Some of the reds were really low quality as well, especially the Zinfandel / Primitivo. The only decent wine was the Carignan, which I took home a bottle of. It's a relatively unknown grape, but they have a decent interpretation of it. On the service side our waitress seemed overworked and too busy for us. She scolded me and my drinking partner for drinking at a different pace and said we were making it harder for her. I suppose that's true but is that really something you should be saying to a customer? It wasn't a problem at any other winery we went to. read more

(Review based on 2.5 stars) Yelp Check In Deal: Free wine tasting with Yelp check in & 10% off wine purchases. Wine tasting is $5 for 7 glasses in case you don't end up check in. Anyways, my husband and I, along with our dog (yep, dog friendly tasting room. Here is a list of other dog friendly wineries in the area http://www.travelpaso.com/content/dog-friendly-activities) came by Castoro Cellars this past Friday late afternoon around 4 pm. There are 2 areas to taste wine in the tasting room. When we came in, we just walked straight for the tasting counter. There was an older Caucasian woman with some more counter space than the younger Caucasian man hostessing a birthday party tasting. This woman saw us and I told her that we are here for the wine tasting. She just placed 2 laminated menus on the counter but didn't explain how the tasting worked (but it does say it on the menu). Out of 14 wines on the menu, you can choose any 7 to try which is not a bad price at all. Of the wines I tried, I ended up only liking the Muscat Canelli (Early Harvest), which cost $10 per bottle (prior to tax) & Muscat Canelli (Late Harvest), which cost $22 per bottle (prior to tax). These wines are not on the list but these were open bottles and so we were able to try them. However, the woman who hostessed us did not offer these to us. She offered it to the woman next to us and then eventually us since we were next to her (if we weren't then most likely she would not offer it to us). This woman employee did not do a good job at checking up at up on our tasting and really should have because Castoro was really skimpy with their pours. But after all of the people at her wine counter left, she seemed to warm up to us and started talking to us more. But it was kind of odd for her to keep calling us "Oriental" (uh, I prefer to be called Asian) and telling us how each of the wines we were trying went well with some "Oriental" type of food. It made me feel kind of odd but I didn't say anything so that it would not be so awkward. In the end, I ended up buying a bottle of the Muscat Canelli (Late Harvest). It is much sweeter than the Muscat Canelli (Early Harvest) and only wanted to buy just 1 bottle. With the lack of customer service and the prejudice service (yep I went there and I will tell you that Cambria definitely does not have much diversity and this is not the only winery we experienced this during our short vacation), this winery is getting a 2.5 star rating for good reason. The only redeeming factor is the dessert wines and this winery being dog friendly, thus a higher rating above 1 star. read more

Good wines here and tastings are reasonably priced at $10 I believe. You get to pick any 7 wines to tastes from their selection of around 15. Our host was not very engaging though and waited way too long in between pours. When she was pouring for us, she seemed more interested in telling us about the vineyard than the wine we were tasting. Being a white wine drinker, I appreciated the number of whites they had and she even let me taste one not on the flight list. We ended up buying their reserve cab and they comped one of our flights. Lovely Winery This must be our third visit, and the wines are delicious. We tasted 6 or 7 types of wines, and they got better and better as they poured from one bottle and another Angela took good care of us. We ended up joining the club. We walked out with the February collection of 6 bottles of red. Then we opted to pick up 9 more bottles to go. The vineyard is beautiful, and there were nice tables outside. Almost everything was perfect! My group came here on Sunday 8/29. The host was very nice and welcoming and seated us quickly. We did not have a reservation for a tasting but we were promptly seated and told a server would be right with us. We arrived right around the end of yoga event, which is pretty cool and looked like a nice experience. Especially given the views and scenery the winery provided. The only problem was the server never acknowledged our party. We patiently waited and understood it might take some time given they were wrapping up with the yoga group. However, after watching the server visit the few other occupied tables multiple times without having acknowledging us (outside of a few unwelcoming moments of eye contact), we realized she just did not care to serve us for whatever reason. After about 45 minutes of patience, my friend let the host know the server still had not come to help us. The host was apologetic and helpful and took our orders and bought out glasses and assured us another server would be out to see us shortly. We could see him question the initial server about why she hadn't come to check on us and we could see her have a rude and nasty attitude with him and no responsibility or care that we had been sitting there without help. She said she "forgot" about us. We appreciated the host getting the ball rolling and know it's not his job to conduct the tastings or provide wine service to us so appreciated his help. He ended up having a server from inside come and assist and between him and our amazingly knowledgeable, fun, efficient, professional, and overall delightful wine legend Sherry, things ended up absolutely fantastic. Sherry gave us tips on tasting and knew a lot about each wine and gave us lots of info on Zinfandel grapes and just was overall so fun and helpful. She also had a young male trainee that was shadowing her and he was helpful and proactive and we appreciated him picking up on details like us needing water glasses for the water carafe we had picked up from inside for the table. Outside of the that, the musicians that were playing that day were super talented and played a wide range of songs. We especially loved the keyboardist and drummer. Our neighboring tables were also friendly and gave tips on other places to visit nearby. So overall it was an amazing and wonderful experience and the wine of course was delicious. Our favorites were the Falaghina and Primitivo. I would absolutely recommend this place to visit and we enjoyed it so much we ended up staying much longer and forgoing another vineyard. They also had snacks like meats and cheeses and nuts you could buy to complete your day sipping wine. read more

Donna and I used to love coming to Castoro Cellars for wine tasting and we'd always leave with a case..... that is until we discovered Trader Joes sells most of their wines for 1/3 the price!! Still.... if you like sweet wines they have a great late harvest Zinfandel you can only find here. Wines are in the teens and twenty's. We had the E ticket ride. Compliments of a special package put together by Travelzoo that included our 2 night resort stay as well as dinner. It also brought us here, to Castoro Cellars, for a FREE wine tasting for two. I scampered around doing the gift shop circuit, taking pictures, while those most docile, once upon a time feral cats kept jumping into my line of site. Irresistible photo opportunity. Meanwhile, Mr. B kept himself busy sipping and smoozing. We are both good at what we do. I confess to taking an occasional sip, too, and together we decided to purchase a few bottles. White Zin (for me, the lightweight) Muscat Canelli (not too sweet, for us both) Muscat late harvest (Mr. B's fondness, a grown up's liquid candy with alcoholic tendencies) All delightful. And even more surprising, we got a free bottle of Castoro's White Zin at dinner that same night. Coincidence? I think not. read more

What a wonderful and secluded wine vineyard! It's very discrete here and the sunny patio view is quite peaceful! I adore the grape vines that are hung along the path leading to the entrance or exit - depending if you are entering or exiting. This was our first stop out of many vineyards on a Sunday fun day after attending a vineyard wedding reception the day before. Clearly, we are Wine-Ohs! We got to do unlimited tastings at this vineyard because the pourer was generous and we flashed our Yelp user account! First up, was their Balena 2013 Whale Rock white wine. The pineapple additive made it refreshing and crisp! I don't usually care for whites and I prefer reds over whites, but this was pleasant! Their Chardonnay 2012 Whale Rock and Grenache were both clean. Their Cabernet Sauvignon Estate, left a light dry finishing touch to the palate. I like their Blind Faith, which was off their menu and the vineyard, itself, doesn't produce it, but somehow is affiliated with another vineyard to hold this wine. My all time favorite was their Zinfandel - gold. It was a form of mixtures of flavors that complimented well and tasted compelling! Last, but not least, their Petite Syrah, with hints of blackberries, left a tartiness aftertaste in my mouth. Desperado, the Cat, welcomed us along the trail, lingered with us at the outdoor patio and purred at us as we bid farewell. It was extremely enjoyable here! Until next time, Desperado! read more

Moms a member and came in on a cold Monday afternoon with no reservation we were welcomed warmly and given a spot in front of the fire. This winery is a bargain especially the club. Out of the 6 wineries I tasted on this trip this was top 2. They have some solid wines. I actually joined after this great experience. I wish I could remember the gentleman's name that served us because he was amazing , very attentive and informative. I would stop in if your are in the area , centrally located and there is a large patio to enjoy when the weather is fair. There is a extensive list of wines to choose from. We are spending this week here in wine country! We've been coming to Castoro for years. It is our favorite. They make some great wine. We came again today. It's Monday and we got here around 12:30 pm. Very quiet and very few people in here right now. Perfect and just the way we like it. On the weekends this place can get crazy crowded. No thanks. I am in town for my birthday and decided to do a wine tasting tour. Being unfamiliar with wine I was a bit nervous visiting a winery for a tasting because it was a bit intimidating . Sherry was our expert and wow just wow. She was sweet, gracious, and took her time to show us how to truly enjoy our wine experience. Was in Paso for the weekend, decided to come check out the disc golf course. I walked up to the front counter, asking if it was possible to play a round, was immediately greeted by an incredibly rude woman who's response was "absolutely not! This is a winery we cant have you traipsing about in the mud, you'll destroy the vineyard" it had been raining that morning, and there was indeed mud, i'm sure. which is fine if it wasn't available. The attitude of this employe, as if she was talking to someone who just asked her the most ridiculous question ever, and decided to scold me like a child, instead just offering a simple, "sorry we close it when its wet outside". Do not waste your time here, Heilman park is right down the road, a beautiful course, open to the public, and I played a round in the pouring rain no problem. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Castoro Cellars! We were thrilled with the poring experience from Sherry, she was gracious to teach us how to taste and spit. We know how to drink! But never have been shown how to "feel" the wine as you swirl it gently around your pallet. The wines were very good and we also enjoyed the Late Harvest Zinfandel ( port). We continued shopping, gathering pasta, siracha vinegar, passion fruit vinegar, & frog balls ( Brussels Sprouts in vinegar)! We loaded up our car, to go on to the next winery. One of the many wineries in the Paso Robles area, with beautiful, picturesque surroundings, structure and natural landscaping of the vines. The wine was good enough to buy a bottle. Pricing was pretty average. The service was great as well. You get 2-for-1 with a Yelp check-in, but our hostess waived the tasting fee entirely with our purchase. They have a popular game that I've never played. They say it's like golf, but instead of hitting a golf ball, you throw a disc. Must be a fun time and something to try one day. Their slogan "Damn Fine Wine" is pretty funny. They give you little embroidered stickers of their signature furry creature. LOL. read more

There tagline is "Dam Fine Wines" and I would have to agree. This was way up our alley as far as the style of wine. Almost everyone we tried we enjoyed. Also, yelp! check-ins get you a free tasting plus 10% off wines! The wine attendant was beyond cool. We tried all the wines and purchased a bottle of the cabernet, the last zinfindels, and the rose. We visited Castoro last week from Texas. I wanted to make a callout to our host Kathy who did a phenomenal job. We are wine members, but only get to the region every few years. We had 4 additional guest with us. Kathy is friendly, very knowledgeable, and welcomes questions. Of course the wine is great and a good value.
