Parking is easy and free. The restaurant is tucked away in the back of a nice strip plaza. We were immediately greeted and sat at the bar for dinner. They had a lively happy hour crowd of locals. The bartenders were friendly and fast. My food was okay. I think I would have preferred the blackened redfish. I think I got the imperial redfish. The sauce just made the fish a little soggy. It was served over a large amount of mashed potato's and veggies. Everything had nice flavor but the potatoes were out of a box and part of the veggies still had the refrigerator chill to them. Felt like a bait and switch. The website gave impression of higher end food and service. We were greeted right away and sat. Then we sat and sat and sat. Drinks were served in stryofoam cups and don't drink too fast cause you will have to ask more than once for a water refill. Nachos, didn't allow a sub of shrimp for chorizo cause they were so busy. Ok fine but really?!? Ordered the lobster special nachos and supremely underwhelmed. The cheese was so heavy and gloppy that it overpowered everything. Wonton chips were coming close to stale and nothing remarkable about lobster meat. Seafood scampi looked ok Rasta Pasta was drenched in sauce and looking unappealing to the eye. Ginger driver the person to finish it. Said it was spicer than it needed to be, but that's pretty subjective. Firecracker shrimp was heavily battered and the sauce was eh. It got eaten but definitely have had better. Burger, requested medium and it was served medium rare. It took so long to get service that it wasn't worth asking them to cook a bit longer. At first I was leaning towards 4 stars but wait, there's more. Initially we had difficulty finding the restaurant since it's sandwiched between two buildings and the map getting us there wasn't helping. The outdoor seating area was simple but a perfect setting. When we sat, we were handed three separate menus, main, specials and drinks. The drink menu was well, ratty (the first word that came to mind). This wasn't the best first impression but we continued our orders. We had the sangria and watermelon margarita. These drinks aren't for the faint of heart. They go hard on the liquor and I'm definitely ok with that. The tuna tower appetizer was amazing. A meal itself with tons of tuna and fresh mango. For entrees we had the surf and turf and scallop and shrimp scampi. Bother we're very good. Even the side veggies with the surf and turf were fresh and so different. The scallops were equally fabulous. Also, the service was great. Full water and quick removal of empty dishes the entire time. Moral of the story, don't judge a restaurant by the menus. I decided to break from tradition and ordered the fried calamari instead of their tuna tartar today. I was happy with the chimichurri punch and sweet aioli base. I often go the seafood route at this establishment. Today was no exception with the grouper imperial served in a shallot lump crab beurre blanc. Hats off to the chef and the often beautiful plate presentations. A negative aspect is the bar like atmosphere in contrast to the fine dining presentation. It has become more pronounced with the noise ilevel as it grows in popularity. Although the servers are friendly, they don't have the acumen to match the quality of the food. The food often leans toward the flash fried route and ends up a little heavy. Even though my grouper was not fried, it could use some editing. Adding cream to the sauce detracted from the dish. I also wasn't a fan of sprinkled chili powder on the rim. However, I ate all the fish and enjoyed the cilantro oil and tart super-mini tomatoes and micro greens, which gave it a french mexican fusion aspect. Not one that I would have imagined. Please bring back the lobster diavolo- it is one for the books. read more

Looks like a great watering hole for the locals. The food on two occasions has been hit or miss. The wait staff seems to be aware of the general problems, but not concerned. We came here for my dads birthday for restaurant week! I was very happy with the choices on their menu. Everything was good. I got the tuna tartare app and it was fresh and yummy. The seaweed was seasoned to perfection. then I got the grouper as my main course. That was delicious too. My dad got the flounder and really enjoyed it. Perfect birthday meal. My mom got the prime rib and said it was very flavorful but not hot. That was the only criticism. My parents both got key lime pie which was a great ending to their meal. My mom doesn't usually eat desserts and licked her plate clean. I got the mango cheesecake and it was so creamy. I'm not usually big into cheesecake but it was pretty good. First, it's a little hard to find. It's hidden in a strip shopping center behind another restaurant. The outdoor seating area is great. There is a breeze that goes through the little alleyway and you can sit in the sun or shade. The service was great. The food.... not so much. The lobster bisque was good, but had a ton of old bay seasoning making it very very salty. The shrimp and grits actually lacked taste and had some weird green slurry on it. The fries were good however, seasoned right and cut in a different way that's makes them interesting. I'd try the place again. The other people around us seemed to be having a good time. read more

We decided on a whim to try Castaways because the food looked interesting and the atmosphere seemed to be causal. Had the whole crew with me including the kids (one of which is a picky eater). We were seated almost immediately (inside upon our request, with a view of the incredible mural on the wall) It took a little while for anyone to check on us, but once they did the drinks came quickly as did our appetizer, the wonton nachos. They were delicious! Topped with kahlua pork, melted cheese, tomatoes and avocado. The pork was so good! My oldest the picky eater ordered the burger with fries and said they were very good, my husband and I both ordered the beer battered fish and chips. The batter was light and the beer flavoring was there but not overpowering. The fish was amazing! The fries were very good and there was a generous helping of them, and the cole slaw had a hint of wasabi in it which added a nice zing. The youngest ordered the Savannah Crab cake BLT. He was generous enough to share a bite. This thing was out of this world! The crab cake was mixed with veggies and plenty of delicious crab, from the one little bite he shared the flavors were all there and married perfectly together. We went for the first time for an early dinner Sunday afternoon. The place was not that busy, however, we waited a very long time for anybody to acknowledge our presence and seat us. The service only got worse from there. The she crab soup was horrible with visible chunks of roux in it. The two fresh rockfish specials we ordered were absolutely fantastic. Each had perfectly cooked fish with a sauce atop hot mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables. Honestly, the dinners were excellent. T'was a restaurant week visit. Reservations are highly recommended. I still had to wait 10 minutes past my reservation time. It was loud and tight. I don't know if that's the usual scene around here or if the first evening of Restaurant week brought in an extra crowd. They also have outdoor seating, but it was too chilly that particular evening. Great in the summer time, I'm sure! My party had the tuna tartare and conch fritters to start. Great tasting tuna tartare dish, with a nice serving of ginger! I didn't get a chance to try the conch fritters (I've never had any), but they went quick by the person who did order them. I guess they were tasty! For our entrees, we enjoyed the lobster + scallop carbonara, the surf and turf, and the flounder. The carbonara was extremely salty, lacked enough scallops and left me in a battle with the lobster. I'm not sure what I thought when I made that pick. The surf and turf was gone in an instant. I had a piece of the shrimp and it was juicy. I probably should have had that dish instead. How about the flounder? Well, I was skeptical of getting it, because I wasn't sure what it would taste like - I don't eat enough flounder to know. So I didn't get the dish, however the person who did enjoyed it very much. Luckily I had a bite of the flounder, rice and mango salsa. I now see that was the best entree choice of the evening. The only downside is that you'll have to deal with the fish bones. As for dessert, we tried the pistachio cannoli and the tiramisu. I preferred the cannoli, but it definitely needs pistachio filling in the center! I ate the edge and then the center is a hollow portion that makes you sad, until you get to the other side. While I didn't enjoy my meal as much as so wanted to, and I'll take the blame for that one, everyone else really enjoyed the food because plates were clear by the end of the night. read more

Impressed! My dad goes to all these local joints and this is his latest obsession. We had gotten a gift certificate to use so we went for dinner. The place was small, but packed. There were so many people there. I looked at the menu and didn't see much for me, but I got fettuccini Alfredo. It was really good. I ate it all. Dad got some steak salad with extra steak and then he put my shrimp on the side on it as well. He thought it was really good! I liked the atmosphere and there was a nice outdoor patio I need to try next time I'm in town. I will be back! read more

Just left Castaways. No wait because it was early. I asked if the shrimp and grits was spicy. The waiter said "Not at all". Food comes out quickly and I took a bite out of the middle of the food. It was so spicy that my nose started to run. I hate spicy food because it seems to " blind" my taste buds. We told the waiter and he tells us that no one has ever sent this dish back, it is not too spicy, and he will have to pay for it if I return it. I say ok just get me a box then and I will pull the ham and shrimp off for my husband to eat later. My husband also thought the shrimp and grits was too spicy to tell someone it is not spicy at all. Waiter now says he will go talk to the chef. When the waiter returns, he says they will take it off the bill but won't make me anything else because all their food has spices. I am thinking. Does this chef not know there are spices that are not made to burn and aggravate the palate? Most of the time a bad cook uses too many spices to cover up their inability to make something great out of simple ingredients. And then there is the loss of demand for truly good tasting food. No one wants to go against the grain and speak out. Well food costs a lot now and if you are going to pay more to have it prepared for you; you should really enjoy the meal. I asked the waiter what was the smallest amount of fried shrimp I could have. He said 5 for $5. But they would be spicy too. And I said I wanted cocktail sauce. He said that would certainly be more spicy than the shrimp and grits. Yes, maybe true, if I ate it with a spoon as my meal. I did not expect fine dining at Cast A Ways, nor did I expect to leave hating a place. My husband does love the Chrispy Scored Flounder and the Coconut Cake. Even though the cake was on the verge of being refrigerated too long. My 5 fried shrimp were battered only, not even a drop if salt was placed on them. This chef has feelings too easily hurt to be in the restaurant business and behaved like a 2 year having a tantrum. And everything we ordered was on the bill, nothing was taken off. I didn't expect anything to be removed. I like to dine out. But this is not my kind of place. This is a wear what you want and the men leave their hats on in this hang out. Probably more bar than eatery. That might be precisely why the waiter said all the food was spicy. Burning tongues need to be quenched. read more

We stopped in during a recent camping trip to Skidaway Island. About 20 minutes from the campground. Parking was a bit challenging. If the small parking lot in front of the restaurant is full, be sure to read the sign at the lot across the street - there were tow-away warnings - guaranteed to ruin an otherwise good evening. But once inside, we were seated quickly, despite the place being fairly full. COVID-ready, everyone not seated was wearing a mask. No menus - scan the code on the table and read the menu from your phone. Not the worst way to start a meal. To be perfectly honest, we were there a month ago, and I'm just getting around to writing my review. That said, I remember the whole experience being good - but not outstanding, and would have to re-read the menu to remember what I ordered. I lived in a beach community in Florida some years ago, and this reminded me of some of the places we frequented when a "coastal fix" was in order. very middle-of-the-road as far as price, atmosphere, and quality. And there's nothing wrong with that. The seafood is the star of the show, rather than the chef. Food was simple, too the point, and enough that you don't leave hungry. If you're in the area, it's worth stopping. I probably wouldn't go too far out of my way to get here, but it was a good choice at the time. Restaurant week in Savannah is a great time to try out some of those restaurants you have on your list! This was our first visit to the Castaway and found it to be relaxing and enjoyable! We pass through Sandfly every once in a while, most of the time with guests to nearby Wormsloe but this time we were on a mission. Looking over the restaurants participating we picked out a new restaurant with an appealing special menu. When we arrived the bar was packed with many people enjoying the start of their weekend. We fortunately had made a reservation and were seated at a table quickly by the hostess. Our waiter made it over to us and Jo (my wife) order a Kentucky Mule and I opted for a Hopsecutioner IPA while we finalized our choices. We both went for oysters Rockefeller for an appetizer and Jo went with the scored flounder and I decide to try their Cioppino Fra Diavolo! We decided to split our dessert choices with me getting the Mango Cheesecake and Jo, the Key lime pie. The Oysters Rockefeller were three large oyster shells packed with a tasty spinach, Parmesan cheese, bread crumbs and minced oysters. Our waiter brought our entrees and offered to bring me a IPA that he thought I would enjoy that was not on the menu but on draught, Terrapins Luau Topical. He was right, as it was a juicy IPA that was not bitter and was a nice complement to my meal. My wife's scored flounder had a salsa topping and a large side of fresh green beans and rice. While the flounder was not huge he was one of the fattest I have ever seen with both sides being thick with tender meat. My Cioppino was filled with seafood! It had to have eight or more mussels, shrimp and at least six shrimp with some nice chunks of redfish with tomatoes and rigatoni pasta. It came with a couple of slices of bread used to sop up the broth. I think the broth though was a little disappointing as I expected a thick spicy buttery tomato based sauce and instead it was more of a light broth that didn't have the zip a Fra Diavolo sauce should have. All in all I could not complain about the portion as it was a hearty serving of seafood and enjoyable. The pies were both pretty good with the mango cheese getting the edge as it was creamy with a nice sauce while the key lime pie was a little on the heavy side. Food & Beverages 4 The portion sizes are large, I would not rate the food taste as awesome (although the scores flounder was very good) as some of the food seemed preprepared and could have had more flavor. Service 4.5 Our waiter was great! My wife thought he was covering at least half the tables in the crowded restaurant and we felt he was there when we needed him. He also was friendly and picked up on his customers likes. Atmosphere 3.5 Beach Casual with a large fishing mural on the wall and a Tiki like setting. Price 4 A good price for a good meal! The food in my opinion was 3 stars but my waitress was phenomenal, which boosted the score up to a 4. I got the oysters rockafella and they were just OK. They tasted premade, frozen and deep fried when ordered. Did not taste fresh at all. Next i got the grouper imperial. This was better, the plating was awesome but still not what i was expecting. Had our first trio couple dinner out plus 1, so 7 total diners. Ashley was our server, she was spot on all night. Kept the drinks coming, was as kind as a neighbor and made us all happy this was our selected restaurant. Everyone was thrilled with their choices. My red snapper was to die for. Our party had red fish, salads, burgers and shrimp & grits. Party of seven and no complaints. To be honest, they seemed unstaffed, but that's to be expected now. The delay was actually a great thing, as visiting these faces was overdue. The fans were blowing, and bugs were abated. We tried to tip especially well. Parties can't filter through as fast with limited staff, we get it. We were so glad this was our first real "post" covid gathering. (Bless the vaccines!) read more
