I really want to love this place. I've tried to like this place, three times now. The staff is always warm and super friendly and if there was a way to rate the service alone, they would get five stars. I always order signature/seasonal/special lattes from places that offer them. They are my kryptonite. Each of the three times I've done so here, they've been lackluster in flavor. They also don't warm the milk on a "hot" latte at all, they take it straight from the fridge and plop it right into the cup, making the overall latte temperature lukewarm at best. Today I ordered their special orange blossom iced latte, thinking that this would avoid the temperature problem. I ordered and paid for a 16 ounce latte. The barista pulled out a 12 ounce cup, filled it 3/4 with ice, poured about a shot of the orange blossom flavor over the ice, then filled the cup with milk nearly to the top. Then a second barista pulled an espresso shot and poured that over the top and handed it to me. I told them I had ordered a 16 ounce and the barista who took my order was apologetic and immediately grabbed a 16 ounce cup. But instead of remaking the drink, she simply poured the first one into the new cup and filled the rest of it with milk. Just plain, cold milk. "So the only difference between a 12 ounce latte and a 16 ounce is four ounces of milk?" I asked. The second barista said "yes, and more flavor" (there was never any additional flavor added). Then I asked how many shots are in a 12 ounce vs. a 16 ounce and he replied, "two, there are two in both." I only saw him pour in one to begin with. There's a chance he's a rapid espresso shot puller and I missed one of the shots being poured in... maybe? Even if he did add two shots of espresso to the original drink, are you telling me that four more ounces of an espresso drink doesn't actually require more espresso? Is this standard practice everywhere except Starbucks and I just never knew? Whatever the case, my latte tastes like I just paid over $5 for a plastic cup full of ice and milk with a subtle hint of a bitter flower. And for me, this is three strikes and I'm off to much better coffee. read more

I would say this is the worst of the three locations. The vibe just isn't that great. The drinks are also not made with much care. My latte was not extra hot like I asked and the texture of the foam was off but what saddened me the most was that he gave me an 8 oz when I asked and paid for a 12 oz! :( read more

Love the layout and decor. That crazy light fixture looks like a giant asterisk! I had a really good cafe au lait and an amazing vanilla honey bun. The people were really nice and attentive. I would recommend it to anyone. The prices are really good too. Parking can be tough though read more

Case study coffee is always tasty, so the combination of that with great atmosphere and friendly, efficient baristas make it a perfect spot to work or chat with friends. Coffee is okay, and it's a great space--big windows, light and airy. But like most places around Portland, part of the price you pay is the compulsory music-listening. I look around on a weekend morning, and what do I see? A mixture of folks: from five to sixty-five: parents, kids, twenty somethings and grandparents? And what do all those people crave at 10:00 a.m.? Steady, thumping, in-your-face re-fried dance music that makes it impossible half the time to think or carry on a conversation. Can you imagine someone saying the following? "Case study? I used to go there, but now that they've cut out the steady, stupid thumping produced by some casio drum machine, I've taken my business elsewhere." Hardly. More likely: "I'd like to go there, but the staff insists that I listen to their choice of music." Coffee had a nice bold flavor without it tasting too acidic. Really chill atmosphere and staff seemed happy to be there. Great place to spend a lazy morning reading the paper and drinking good coffee. read more

Love this place! Coffee and pastries are fantastic, and the research/study vibe is strong here. The two-top tables can be a little difficult to come by, but the giant communal table is fine. You can have a reasonably private conversation here because most people are hunched over their glowing apple machines for what seems like days. There is also plenty of seating in the window so you can sip your perfect coffee and watch Sandy Blvd gentrify before your very eyes. read more

Space is nice, light, nice big windows. Cashier was more concerned with talking to someone else in line than giving friendly service. He was abrupt as if helping me was taking away from his socializing. Coffee was ok, nothing special. Small mug for the price. Pastry was dry and over heated, not worth the price. Okay, so if you're not a hipster, writer, artist, or some other typical person who'd be at a super pretentious cafe ... Don't go here!!! The 3 stars is all for the coffee and food. It's similar to Spielman's on Division but 100x's more full of themselves. The cashier couldn't look more put off to be serving. At least the barista (short haired woman) smiled and thanked me.. And made good coffee. The cashiers "looking down at you" attitude was so off putting... I will NEVER come back! Although 90% of the people has similar facial expressions. I really do not care that this coffee shop is pretentious, trendy or a library of whatever the people who frequent it are described as. It was flat out good coffee. They do not offer a plethora of options, just a few basic selections featuring the coffee itself. The space is open and airy. The service was friendly. Typical coffee joint - lots of laptops, spendy drinks, and mellow music. It is nice, clean, and has very friendly service, but if you're looking for something a little more eclectic or conducive to your creative side I would recommend venturing elsewhere. I made a special trip out here to try the hazelnut latte, which was just ok.. the worst part was the service. The people helping me were just so unfriendly. The barista made my drink at first using the wrong milk, and when I offered to take that one too (why waste? I was sharing the drink and could have used more) he bluntly replied, "I'd rather just give you the drink that you ordered." And he threw it away!! If there's one thing I cannot stand, it's wastage. Staff was indifferent upon arrival. Latte was room temperature. Got attitude when I asked if it could be warmed up or remade. Croissant that cost $4.25 was burnt. All in all....typical Portland "independent" coffee shop experience. Won't be returning. Too many other coffee shops to choose from. read more

Case Study has a great atmosphere and pretty nice people working there. Unfortunately the coffee is always lukewarm by the time you get it. At their busiest times they only (usually) have one person working the machine and wait a long time for good but tepid coffee drinks. Also of the 15 or so times I've ordered one, I've never gotten an actual cappuccino they're always lattes with tons of milk. It's a bummer cause the people are cool, the coffee is good and the atmosphere is good. read more

Incredible service, beautifully refined decor and a seemless cappuccino!

Nicely decorated coffee shop on Sandy that serves Stumptown Coffee. They had a few pastries (croissants, bagels and the Manchego Mushroom Buscuit which I think comes from Crema over on Ankeny) but not much else in the way of food. There's a huge communal table that looks like a former boardroom conference table along with a few smaller tables and Eames style shell chairs. It wasn't crowded even during 8 AM rush time and I felt a little worried that this place wasn't getting enough foot traffic. They offer the fancy glass vacuum pot coffee if you have time to sit a spell. They have wi-fi. When I went to pay for our drinks and pastries using a debit card I was told to enter the tip amount first and then click the appropriate button but if I didn't want to leave a tip to either enter zero or press another button (I can't remember which). I use my debit card all the time and have never encountered this kind of a set up. I pretty much always tip but there was something about being told to tip up front that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. On the other hand, at least they are allowing their staff the opportunity for debit card tips (unlike Starbucks). This has nothing to do with the food or coffee but it did leave a lasting impression. I know those credit card slips where you enter your own tip and sign are probably getting to be passe and that this is probably more efficient but it just seemed weird. On the up side, this is the only place to get decent coffee on Sandy and they seem to have ample on street parking. It would be nice to see them expand their breakfast options and maybe add a couple lunch options too. read more

This place has great coffee and a dedicated gluten free pastry case. It embodies Portland in every way, great atmosphere. They are all in their own time zone here. This is a place to chillax and be cool man, NOT a place to stop and get morning coffee. If you ever want that "Am I invisible or do I just not know the secret handshake or wear the right vintage of clothing this morning?" feeling then come here. If you've got nothing to do all day, come here. If you're stoned out of your gourd and it's all good, come here. Otherwise I'd steer clear. High quality coffee shop, made such a good flat white that I ordered a second. The snacks are all vegan, gluten free which is irrelevant to me but important for some. I sat here & worked for a couple hrs and found the big tables comfortable and perfect for work or study. Was pretty busy but still quiet enough for work. Stumbled upon this gem after grabbing a pastry from Bakeshop next door (checkout my Bakeshop review after this and definitely go there if you come to Case Study! Seriously. Go there. Like, right now.). Case Study is a five star Portland coffee shop! As a total Portland coffee snob, I am very picky about my coffee shops, too. Very roomy, delicious coffee and snacks, friendly service, reliable wifi. What more you could ask for!? Another thing that really made the 5 stars for me is that the music isn't blaring in your ears. It's the perfect volume so that you have a nice background ambiance but you can still focus if you're working, and you don't have to scream while conversing. They also sell Bowery bagels which are my fave (checkout my Bowery's review if you're interested).I don't get out to Sandy much, but I'll be stopping by every time I am out here now! read more

Coffee here is a bit on the pricer side, but it's spacious and an awesome place to work or study.

I love this place, the atmosphere is nice, clean and open with pretty wood finishes. The staff is friendly and the big table in the middle give it a friendly old-world feel. The only complaint I have is that they close at 6PM so I can't do my after-work meetings there. Bummer! read more

Stumbled in this place today since 'm in PDX for a week to visit friends and family. The two girls working today are really nice and friendly. The music volume is low which is nice, the coffee is awesome. Stumptown I believe. free wifi. I usually only like places if they have couches but there were plenty of tables and seats. Fantastic coffee drinks- a mocha and a bourbon caramel ( housemade syrup) latte made with almond milk, neither was too sweet, perfection! A friend told us later they had won some award for Portland coffee which I did not doubt at all. We didn't eat but the pastry case was very tempting. Very. Baristas were friendly. Struck up a good convo with a fellow patron while waiting for our drinks, Very inviting space. read more
