For example, I ordered a cold brew coffee. I was not asked if space should be left for creamer. The prices also seemed high for what you get and the poor ambiance. I used to be a regular here, but unfortunately, enough mistakes have been made that I no longer want to come back. All of this happened within the span of one month: my pastry was burned to the point of being completely inedible; my drink was made with whole milk instead of oat milk, and when I pointed it out, there was no apology; and I was given a 12 oz drink instead of the 16 oz I ordered. When I brought that up, instead of remaking the drink in the correct size, I was offered the option to have it poured into a different cup. There was also an occasion when I arrived just two minutes before opening. The door was already open and a barista was outside placing chairs, asked if they were open, only to be told that they weren't open yet. I understand having set opening hours, but with the being door open and someone actively setting up outside, the interaction felt unnecessarily unwelcoming given it was only 2 minutes. Mistakes happen, but it's the way they were handled that was most disappointing. After being a regular customer, I expected better attention to orders and, at the very least, some acknowledgment when something went wrong. Unfortunately, the repeated issues and lack of accountability have made me decide to take my business elsewhere. read more

Shitty service. Don't recommend if you have social anxiety!! The barista had music playing loudly over the speakers, so I couldn't hear my own music. It was symphony music and she asked me to turn it down. When I explained the sound of people eating near me gives me anxiety, she said I could move seats. So I did, right out the door. I went here a couple of times while I'd be on breaks from classes and both times I received the same cold reception from the barista here. The first time I chalked it up to she/they being busy and maybe they were having a rough shift but the second time was much mellower and still received a rude interaction for absolutely no reason. It's unfortunate because it's conveniently located across from PCC but damn why work somewhere where your literal job is to provide customer service if you don't even like to work with people? This is a convenient coffee shop for the surrounding college students and it is well loved! They have nice seating for getting work done and a homey feelings with all of the beautiful windows. However, if you are sensitive to noise/sound or distractable, NOT recommended for studying/working/thinking. It is super echoey, no sound dampening, and while the door being open is awesome for covid safety (yay covid safety!), the sounds of killingsworth and albina corner traffic can be very intense at time. Every coffee making sound echos! So if you want to have a sensory experience of listening to a loud coffee shop, could be great, but if you are sensitive to sensory input and not seeking it, I'd recommend elsewhere (Arbor Lodge Coffee up interstate and The Stacks down the street in killingsworth are both delightful work/think environments from my idiosyncratic perspective). read more

The place was really dirty, the only table available (busy place , people seem to like it) was just covered in grossness. The place looked nice and was clean, but nothing really stood out as a really cool "Portland" thing. This was my first time visiting the city and I have heard many a story of the coffee in Portland! This place is a bit overrated in my opinion. I will say the location and inside is nice. They have a large seating area. However, the prices are too high for what they serve. I know a really good latte in Portland can be up to $7 but you can expect to pay $6-7 for a watered down, stale bagged tea London fog. Just always disappointing in my experience. The staff has always had an annoyed and bored energy whenever I come in. (I've come here a several of times over the course of 2 years) Their redeeming factors are that things usually come out pretty quick and it's spacious inside. I like this coffee shop. It's at the not-quite-gentrified-up corner of Albina and Killingsworth, and the decor reflects that. Things have a bit of a worn look and feel, but in a cozy way. There are two small art deco-ish leather couches around a well-nicked coffee table, and there's a half-dozen or so two tops, as well as some higher seating at a bar along the western window and a larger table that could seat six. The bar itself looks ahead of it's time, with exposed metal beams showing a bit of rust/patina and what looks like a poured concrete counter. I haven't actually had the coffee here, only having the tea, but it's a great spot for getting some reading or work done. It's generally quiet, with a few folks working on laptops or folks catching up wtih friends. Being in the not-quite-gentrified part of town, you do see the occasional questionable character wander in. Not ideal to have someone asking for some change or whatnot, but also not the end of the world. The other big perk is that it's got relatively long hours, staying open till 8 on most days, and 6 on Sundays. read more

CoffeeHouse-Five offers tasty coffee with many places to work- couches, tables, bar seating many places to sit your bottom down drink your caffeine (or whatever) and get your work done. The vibe is low key, the staff is super friendly and efficient. I always make a stop when in the hood. They serve some food but I haven't tried anything. The coffee is solid (drip or expresso) they can directly compete with any other shop. There's a vibe of college students/working folks so expect to see a lot of laptops and books. When it's nice there are tables out front. I recommend a stop if you're in the neighborhood. read more

This is absolutely one of my favorite places to get a latte. Over the last 7 years or so I've been in here often, but I never knew the name of it, just "that place on the corner by such and such". I like the baristas, they've never been anything but friendly and professional, and my latttes have always been pretty and delicious. I've had meetings here with co-workers and it's a great space with ok seating and it's usually pretty quiet. Lots of students. No hassle. It's a keeper. read more

Decided to support a local shop rather than rush into Starbucks this morning. Tried to get my usual, but their selection was a bit limited. They were able to suggest that I try a Dark Chocolate Chai instead, and let me gauge whether I wanted it sweet or spicy, which I appreciated. It was a bit humid inside, but I was able to get a nice spot by the window with an outlet ta-boot. A nice change from the usual. I do like that Coffeehouse-Five is a very short walk from the PCC Cascade campus. I absolutely refuse to give PCC $1.75 for a refill of regular old coffee. Each time I pop in for a coffee refill I see students a many of the tables doing school work. It looks as though they have free WiFi here and table with space to work. I'm not one to be super picky about my coffee, (yes I have reheated day old coffee in the microwave in a pinch). The coffee they are serving here is okay. Not mind blowing, but it gets the job done. The price for coffee here is a little more than what I would pay from the odd cafeteria at PCC, but there is just something that seems better about giving my money to a local business instead of PCC. I am not able to review the food or get super detailed about the overall experience because I am strictly an in with my empty mug and out with a full mug kind of customer. Pretty sure the girl who took my order just didn't like me. I came to this conclusion because she was very friendly with the gentleman before me (and no, I'm sure they weren't friends) but the minute I walked up, she visibly changed expressions. I just smiled and asked how her day was, which spoiler alert: she did not care for. But you know what? I didn't walk in expecting a red carpet rolled out for me. I just wanted a latte. What did I get? As you may imagine from my 4-star rating, just what I was looking for. It was a good latte. Would I come back? Hell yeah. The staff is kind, welcoming, & always asking me if I am doing okay after my weekly doctors appointments. I appreciate the hospitality, even if it is only a five minute exchange. I tip heavily simply because I know these kids need to survive, and then I tip beyond that because they're all such sweet people. I am grateful to have found this place all those years ago. I am happy this place survived the quarantine phase of covid in 2020. And also I appreciate that people still wear masks here as someone with a compromised immune system. Thankyou, kids. I decided to finally try this place out since it's right across the street from one of my favorite plant shops. I proceeded to get an iced vanilla latte, with an added shot, and oat milk which rang up to $7 which I get since I was getting a milk alternative, syrup and an added shot. Once I received my drink it was extremely bitter only leaving me to assume the barista let the shots die and as well as forgot to add syrup. A Portland legendary local, who is African American and has lived and breathed life into this city for decades recently shared his extremely poor treatment at this coffee house by a young lady who refused to offer him the WiFi password, so he could contact his nephew about where exactly to meet. He immediately left and decided to come back to inform her of her poor treatment, further explaining his intentions, and was further insulted when this employee dismissed him by saying she really didn't want to be bothered by him 'correcting' her. He had been a long time customer already, and was planning to get coffee there when his nephew arrived. Now they just lost a Portland legend and his entire community! If it is true that a business lives and dies by the quality of its service, this coffee shop dies. I was greeted with, "what do you want?" Mind you this was done with a stone cold face, and when I smiled back at the "barista," he practically blew my brains out with his jaw clenched glare. The other man behind the counter sorta looked at me oddly as I continued to read their menu board, as if I hadn't the right to read it, or perhaps I was taking too much time-- even though I was the only one in line. I ordered a medium coffee, which is a small everywhere else in the coffee world. As I ordered, I asked for room for milk. The barista literally smacked the paper cup down on the counter while saying, "you will make your own room." He then pointed at the creme stand. I gave the other man my cash, and he rang me out. At that point, I wasn't about to tip because I was insulted by their less than gracious attitudes. There was no milk at the creme stand, only half-and-half, and soy. I sugared up my medium (small) coffee, and then went back to the counter. I asked the 2nd man if they had 2% and he blankly looked at me and said, "no." A couple seconds passed as I just looked at him, and then he said, "we have whole milk." Still no smile. I politely asked for the whole milk with a "please." He complied by taking the whole milk about a foot over the counter, and slamming it (literally) onto the counter. I said "thanks," and poured the milk into my coffee. I will never set foot into this coffee shop again. This is some of the worst service that I have ever encountered anywhere, ever. read more

I had the BEST cappuccino I've EVER had in my life. The foam was perfect. Of course I had to get some on my lip and pretend to be Miranda on Sex and the City. Other Portland coffee shops should really look to this place as a source of inspiration on how they should run their business. When people are thinking of good coffee shops in Portland, often one of the first words that comes to mind is "pretentious". While we do have some of the best coffee roasters and shops in the world, they are a tad bit pretentious and condescending at times. In fact, there are countless reviews for other shops in town where yelpers have been talked down to for ordering a caramel latte or any other froofy caffeinated beverage. Coffeehouse-Five is not like this at all. In fact, many of the people that I speak to say that their froofy drinks are some of the best they have ever had. While I don't really opt for those kinds of drinks myself, I often enjoyed a carefully pulled demitasse of espresso. That is where this place really shines. Not only do they serve some of the best caramel macchilattedoubledripwhip lattes, but they also have one of the best and most diverse selections of espresso around. You won't find Stumptown in this shop, but rather offerings from Cellar Door, Southpaw, Olympia Roasters, and many more roasters throughout the country. I love Stumptown as much as the next person, but it's nice to have a different change of pace once in awhile. Furthmore, the staff here really knows what they're talking about. They're not the typical snobby baristas that use a bunch of highfalutin jargon to attempt to scare you off, but rather they're just a couple of really nice dudes who love coffee and love to talk about coffee. If you ask them any question about the coffees they're serving, they will talk your ear off because they really love what they're doing.
