The quality was top notch, enough to where I felt confident purchasing beans for my espresso maker back home! The beans (locally sourced) were recently roasted too - an absolute must. It was boxing day so I need a quick caffeinated drink, so I popped into this shop for my first time. Early in the morning the coffee shop was pretty busy, especially as stores were not opened yet. As it was my first time in the shop it took me awhile to process the menu- this is definitely a coffee focus place (not for tea drinkers). And the focus seems to be on more coffee forward drinks, rather than jacked up with sugar and other stuff like Starbucks. Coffee prices are inline with other coffee stores in the area. As for seating, the shop provides tables seating. Plus there is a nice coffee bar at the windows, which is perfect for people watching. Plus there is a small coffee bar that faces the barista if you want to watch drinks being made. Love the vibe as we walked in. It was cold and I needed something warm to drink. We had been shopping up and down the nob hill neighborhood finding many perfect gifts for friends and family and ourselves but I needed to get warmed up. I had not had a latte for a long time but I thought today was the day. I ordered it and was very good. I love the design they put on it and back in California they put everything in a to go cup. In a Portland sea of amazing coffee shops, this one still exudes superiority to me... at least on the West side of town. It's a modern space with mirrors, natural wood touches and just the right size to be cozy without feeling cramped. Staff is usually nice but too busy to be bubbly... maybe they should drink more of their own product? the bathrooms do not require a code or key, which is a huge perk (pun intended) for this part of town. Parking is challenging, but just a small hurdle in having access to a marvelous cup of coffee. I love that they offer three different choices anytime you order a drink that includes espresso. I stick with the 8 oz Americano and ask for the baristas choice based on whatever they feel is pulling best (somehow it seems to personify the experience of the shop's endearing name). Check it out! I thank Barista for teaching me, many years ago, how much flavor coffee can have when done right. It was truly a life-changing experience. (There's no going back now!) And I've been their biggest fan ever since then. I was reminded of all that this morning as I enjoyed a quiet Americano while gazing out the window onto 23rd avenue, early enough for the parking to be free and easy. Every Barista location is terrific but I especially enjoy the NW 23rd Ave location. It's spacious and classy. And the window bar is a perfect spot to enjoy a perfect cup of coffee. I'll start by saying this: the coffee is excellent and the location is fantastic. It easily deserves five stars for that alone. But there's one recurring issue that's becoming really frustrating. EVERY TIME I've come in, there are multiple single seats open, yet someone is sitting alone at one of the large booth tables that could seat six to eight people. I come in with my family and little kids, we grab our coffee, look around, and the only seating that works for us is taken by one person on a laptop. So we end up having to leave. I totally understand people wanting to work or relax at a table, but when there are plenty of single seats available, it would be incredibly helpful if those larger tables were left for larger groups. A simple sign might solve this:"If you're sitting alone and single seats are available, please consider leaving larger tables open for bigger parties." Every time I come by this place, the outdoor seating is completely full. Understandably so, because the chic downtown cafe vibes go perfectly with some streetside people watching! What I liked most about Barista was the way their menu is formatted. It gives a clear visual breakdown of the traditional menu items, so you know exactly what you're getting and what it's called. I also really liked the cute dine-in dishware. Inside seating is decent. There are a couple large booths, a line of small tables with benches and chairs, as well as bar style seating by the window. There's the patio outside as well, but as I mentioned; it's always full. The decor is minimalistic and classy. It would be a great place for a coffee date. The barista was very friendly and seemed to be really enjoying their job. They were very upbeat, singing and keeping busy when there was no one ordering (which was rare). Definitely a pleasant accent to the whole vibe. While here I got a macchiato, which was cute and tasty! Worth noting that they offer several different kinds of espresso, and a couple different dairy free options. This is a very coffee focused cafe, and I would go as far as to say one of the most legit/authentic/well-made coffee based experiences I've ever had. No fake, over sweetened Starbucks garbage here! The only point of feedback I have is that the food selection seems incredibly limited. I saw two very large pieces of coffee-cake on display and that was it. Honestly my whole experience with Barista was lackluster and full of dismay. The barista who greeted me seemed as if I was bothering them when I approached the counter even know they weren't doing anything. I placed my order and ran to the restroom where I then heard them screaming my order again and again and again aggressively. When I came out to grab my cortado only a minute later the barista rudely said "I've been calling your order" which is hardly needed. The Cortado itself was not dialed in well and tasted very roasty and the cortado had over an inch of foam on top. And no a cortado sitting in the counter for a minute does not accumulate that much froth.
