I've been back several times since the soft opening and the experience always gets better. I like seeing the new decor that populates the shelves. It's also nice to see all the baristas behind the bar getting a hang of things. The matchas here compared to many other Portland spots is STRONG. This is perfect for me because I always could use the extra caffeine but if that's not your preference it might taste off to you. Also -- still don't know if they're serving their in-house milled matcha yet, so staying tuned for that. Matcha w/ strawberry syrup: 5/5. Great viscosity. It's so wonderful to see how high the matcha bar has increased in Portland compared to just a few years ago, where almost every matcha I ordered was 95% milk or incredibly bitter. This newly opened matcha shop might just be a favorite for me! Although parking is a bit annoying as it is in downtown Portland, this cozy shop is a great spot to chat with a friend or get some work done. Their menu has some of the most affordable prices that I've seen and not only do they offer matcha, but they also offer teas and hojicha as well. They also have a variety of syrups to customize your drink and the option to switch to a milk alternative (oat) comes at no added cost. I got their matcha latte with jasmine syrup while my friend got their strawberry latte. Both were delicious but I thought the strawberry was better as the jasmine wasn't very fragrant (it was just sweet). Nonetheless, it was amazing and I would definitely come back. read more

An awesome new matcha spot! Inside is super pretty and cozy. They curated their space very well. I especially love the counter seats where you can watch the baristas in action. They have a rotating menu with fun syrups and cold foam. We tried the Match Latte and Latte with Ube Syrup. I honestly liked the Latte with Ube more than I thought! Perfectly creamy and sweet. Cute and spacious cafe nestled in downtown portland with beautiful wooden decor. We came about a week after opening on Sat, waited about 40 mins. Decent line but moved fast enough. A small 12oz matcha latte is $4 and large 20oz is $6. They use 4g matcha for small and 7g for large. We got the regular matcha latte and jasmine matcha latte. The only difference is the jasmine syrup! DEFINITELY get the jasmine matcha - it adds a subtle floral jasmine flavor that complements the matcha well. For the matcha itself, it has a lovely grassy with just the right amount of light bitterness to cut through the milk. The price is so affordable and refreshing for this day and age considering they mill their own matcha in store!! I'm not sure if there's any other matcha cafes in the US that mill their own matcha.They also hand whisk EACH drink instead of batching! This is my new fav matcha spot. The day of the soft opening there weren't many people there. The matcha was only $2.00 and another $1.00 if you wanted frothy cream on top. They even offered a complimentary tea flight. It was spectacular. A few days later there was a huge line so we skipped it. A week later we were back and the line inside was short. They were still serving a limited menu. I got their regular iced matcha with oat milk and cream. The vibe is very trendy and clamoring with loud conversation. Mako Matcha Mill is in a pre-opening phase today. The menu is small to start and varies by day. But that does not mean that Portland's tea lovers are not trying it out! Matcha is the rage today in the US resulting in limited supplies from Japan and price fluctuations. What is unique about Mako is they are grinding their own matcha right in the cafe. They bid in Japan for tea, and source tea from a farm in Salem. That comes to a large mill built into the counter grinding the tea leaves to ultra-fine powder. From there it is made into your drink! Right now they have hot, cold, sweetened, unsweetened, dairy, non-dairy drinks they can make, and affogatos. The affogato has a few ice cream choices and with matcha or espresso poured over. They just received some tea for brewing too. Onigiri is available made by Masu upstairs. The interior is architecturally designed by Liminal Shift in mahogany, steel, and a beautiful green stone counter. Comfortable chairs. I've really been enjoying talking to the owners and staff. They are probably the most knowledgable people in Portland about matcha supply and processing. Today they are not providing a rainbow of flavored matcha lattes. Verdict: best matcha i've ever had so far!! everyone in portland is so nice and the baristas were so fun and chatty, complimented my vintage green bag (made me super happy cos i love this bag so much lol) and even remembered me from my bag when i came back a couple of days later. Interior is soo cute and modern with natural accents. Both times I went it was pretty busy but my order was taken and also made pretty fast. The vibes from the employees is very positive I ordered a regular matcha latte with oat milk and simple syrup. A really good, classic order and the matcha had a strong flavor that blended well with the oat milk! They use Califia i think which is the best oat milk in my opinion lol. Menu is still small and it seems like it changes every day? Not sure but they do have a variety of options for milk and sweetener (jasmine, ube, blueberry, etc). This is a cute and well-priced addition to the matcha craza. It's super busy on the weekends, but nice and stress-free on weekdays. Service is friendly, and I've gotten the matcha and the hochija latte and both were great, especially if you add sweetener. The lavender version doesn't necessarily hold much lavender flavor, so I recommend skipping it and just going for regular sweetener. They also have limited selection of sandwiches if you want a quick bite (I got the egg salad sando). They're rustic and like homemade, which is good but nothing special. With the weather getting warmer, I also recently tried their soft serve, which was a swirl of matcha and peach flavors. While the flavors were nice, the soft serve itself was icy with crystals and not as smooth. Not sure if it's because they're still new to using the machine or it hasn't been in use yet because not many people ordered? I have been so intrigued by this spot and wanted to try it for weeks, but frankly gave it some time for the rip roaring lines to die down. Swung by on a Saturday around 1:00 pm and was still met with ~10ish person line that moved...slower than anticipated. I was getting a bit antsy because drinks also seemed to be coming out at a slower pace as a lot of the people sitting down didn't have drinks yet. We were hoping to get somewhere else before 2 so it made me a bit nervous, but thankfully worked out okay overall. There is a handwritten white board menu when you walk in which I took a pic of to peruse and a projected menu behind the counter. I grabbed a matcha with simple syrup and the regular foam whereas my partner got a matcha with jasmine syrup and regular foam. Price wise came out to about $11 which in this day and age IS cheap for 2 drinks so kudos right there. We were able to snag the seats by the window while we waited for our drinks and they came out randomly spaced with his drink coming out 10 min before mine; took about ~20 min total. Flavor wise, they were both good, but I almost felt like they tasted a tad...on the watery side. The interior is cute, but cannot accommodate a ton of people; gets crowded quickly so plan accordingly. The wait can be variable depending on the crowd but alas that's the price you pay for the art of matcha whisking by hand. Price point is honestly great, but I'm not convinced that this is my fave matcha spot in town just yet. read more

Certainly one of the most fairly priced matcha places in town! Their in-house milled matcha is the "Kill Green" which they have limited quantities of. I tried the regular matcha latte with oat milk and sweetened. The matcha was very astringent and more nutty. At first glance it looks grainy, but after mixing it I didn't feel any grains when drinking it. I think it would make it easier for the baristas to wait to announce that the order is ready when all the drinks in the order are complete, so they can spare customers like myself asking where the other drink in the order is. The interior is well decorated but the flow of movement is restricted because once you're in the pickup area, you have to loop all the way back through the line to exit. read more

If you like strong matcha, this is the spot for you!! I like my matcha strong and not too sweet, so I really liked this spot! Not watered down like some places. I got mine with matcha cold foam which added the perfect amount of sweetness for me personally. I want to go back and try their hojicha latte with regular cold foam :). Staff were very friendly. Parking can be a bit difficult to find but there is a $6/hour lot across the street as well as street parking. I can't wait to go back for more!! I felt a little bougie today an decided to order the "Kill Green" (which they only sell a certain amount of each day) for $7.89 as well as decided to upgrade to a large matcha latte ($6.20). We also ordered their iced milk oolong tea for just $3. While the milk oolong tea didn't have any actual milk in it, the drink was smooth & buttery; something I've never had in a drink before. I was pleasantly surprised. We went on a Tuesday around 11am and there was no line which made the experience even better. Stopped by this new matcha place while we are in Portland. My friend and I got the Jasmine Matcha and we both thought it tasted great, with a nice subtle sweetness and I particularly like the matcha they use because it's earthy and nutty which I prefer. We also tried their hojicha latte with cold foam and the cold foam was yummy but the hojicha definitely needed more sweetness. It was a bit bland without the extra simple syrup. I also like their service a lot. While we were waiting for our drinks, one of their staff I could tell was a diligent worker, he multi-task a lot and also informs his colleague when he finishes things to queue up for the next drinks. You immediately see the menu on a white board. There is plenty of seating and the cafe was packed. It was decorated in a contemporary, earthy green, with plants and bowls on the walls. Baristas were at work, making the matcha right in front. There is also authentic Japanese treats. They have matcha available for sale. There was no line so we went up the counter. We ordered a matcha latte with oat milk, carrot cheesecake matcha, and a matcha vanilla with ube. I asked the barista if maybe I should get a syrup for mine. She said they are syrups available if you like to help yourself. After we were done ordering, we found seating. I noticed the see you space cowboy sign from cowboy bee pop. After several minutes, we heard a jasmine being called. We were confused and went up to the counter to check the drink order. We asked about the order once we saw it was ours. The baristas apologized and said they misheard. They also gave my drink the wrong size, as I wanted a small but got a large. Mix ups happen. My matcha was a very true green with the grainy taste. Very authentic. I added some syrup to the matcha. The carrot cheesecake matcha also tasted exactly as it was, very sweet. The matcha vanilla and ube was very good. The flavors mixed well together. It's the perfect "third place" to sit, decompress, and appreciate the craft. The Duckshit Oolong Don't let the name scare you off! This is easily some of the best Oolong I've had in Portland. It's a prized tea that's actually incredibly floral, honey-like, and toasty--no "duck" involved (the name was originally a ruse by farmers to keep thieves away from their best crops!). It's super clean and complex, showing that while they have "Matcha" in the name, their entire tea program is top-tier. The Service The team here is stellar. For a place that sources such high-end, direct-trade tea, the staff is completely down-to-earth and zero-pretension. They are happy to walk you through the menu, explain the milling process, and help you find exactly what you're looking for. Plus, the price point--often around $4 for a high-quality drink--is practically unheard of for this level of quality. The matcha was good but the service was racist!! For context, my partner and I are both East Asian. I ordered a hojicha latte and I asked if it had espresso in it (I explicitly said espresso, not caffeine), then the white man working the register "corrected" my pronunciation of 'hojicha' and then started talking about what hojicha is and how it's made, as if I wasn't Asian. Look in my eyes and look at my eyes and tell me I'm not Asian. Y'all need to learn how to interact with people that don't look like you. read more

Mako matcha mill was alright- it blew up on socials so I was excited to check it out. The workers are extremely nice but there were only 3 of them. I came during soft opening and the drinks were practically half off which was the only thing that made it worth. The matcha didn't seem all that worth considering we waited hours for it but considering it was half off and soft opening, it was decent for what it was! I don't want to give this place a terrible review since every new place needs time to get things settled.
