But before I could even fully process my disappointment, Ashley, the barista, noticed my expression right away. She was so kind about it! We arrived on a bustling Thursday morning around 10:00 and found many customers working away, easily focusing despite all the activity. The barista team was very efficient and focused. I do see all tables occupied and this is one of a few coffees shop in Portland with steady crowd and more folks lingering. A lot of shops on Downtown closes early including this cafe. One of my favorite little touches at Case Study is the "question of the day" they post at the counter--something fun or quirky to ponder while you wait for your coffee. First time at this coffee shop so I'm comparing the taste utility to a "cap" at Barista or Stumptown. it is a two shot espresso with whole milk, temperature about 150, very well balanced (acidity to sweetness with a little bitter back taste) - robust flavor with three origins - Columbia, Ethiopia and Mexico. This place highly recommended by so many locals. It's very nice stop just to hangout and get coffee. I wish i discovered this place early because i would have worked here. I got the iced latte, oat milk, with salted caramel syrup. I think this was too salty for my taste. I did not enjoy this. It was fault, should have gotten the vanilla or hazelnut. I was visiting Portland for a work trip and I came here twice for their jasmine matcha latte. I hadn't seen jasmine with matcha before at a cafe and it was so good I had to come back and get it again! I got it cold both times and it had a nice jasmine flavor which went well with the matcha. It has an old cozy vibe feel and there were all kinds of seating. Staff: They were okay, they got my order and that was it. I said thank you to them lol. Drink: I got their latte with regular milk and such. I always get something 'normal' or 'typical' if it's my first time. The price was a little higher for the size I got (their "small"). The coffee was fragrant and strong but later on as I kept drinking the aftertaste got more sour for me. It was sour in the end so I probably wouldn't try again because of that. I have mixed feelings about my experience. I got a "figgy matcha" since I'd already had plenty of coffee that day. The drink was really good. I'd definitely go there again to grab something to go. The environment wasn't really for me. It would be a nice place to work or read if the music wasn't blasting. One of the baristas was really nice. The other was really short with folks. A couple of people, including myself were waiting for the bathroom for over 15min. One of the women waiting went and said something because we were concerned for the person inside .She was just brushed off. If you require any gluten free food (or don't want a baked food), there is nothing else there. This includes no snacks or bars. Quick Summary - Lovely interior - Coffee was sour - Loud chatter ambience - There were some sweet baked dishes but not many savory options We visited here in the summer morning of Portland, when the air was still chilly to enjoy a cup of hot coffee. Out of the many cafes we visited in Portland, this one was the busiest. There were plenty of tables and chairs, bars, and stools, but all were taken. Inside there was a S-shaped line that zig-zagged to the center of the cafe, where the counter was. At a glance, the seats were on the outside of the doughnut and the staff were working inside. Since it was breakfast time, we hoped to eat a sandwich while having coffee, but most of them were sweet desserts. The only savory option was bagel with cream cheese, so we took this option for this round. There were were a couple of guests waiting around the pickup area, and completed orders were called out by the menu item rather than the name. At the time, it was lucky that I was the only one who ordered the bagel with cream cheese. Out of the many coffee places we tried in Portland, at black (without milk or cream) it was the sourest. That is mostly the reason why I lowered the rating from 5 to 4. While the coffee is the main element in rating cafes. I did enjoy being at this cafe and sitting at one of the tables that had the view of the outside. read more
