Five stars for coffee, atmosphere, and service. 2 stars for vegan treats. I want to love this coffee shop SO much! They have amazing coffee (especially their espresso), this location is so cozy and enjoyable to be in, and the baristas are so nice and helpful. They also have a wide array of vegan treats, which is both rare and awesome that they have options! Unfortunately, all of the ones I have tried so far (a scone, a cookie, and a muffin) have been pretty subpar. Mostly everything is just too dry. And don't tell me good vegan treats aren't possible -- they REALLY are, and it's not too difficult either. I don't know if they make their own treats or not, but they need to rethink how they do this. For a place with so many vegan options and them clearly trying to accommodate vegans (thank you!) they should rethink their recipes or sourcing. read more

Maaaaaaybe my new favorite coffee shop! I had been to their other location but for some sad reason never made it here. Located on Hawthorne just past the curve at 50th, they've got plenty of free street parking in the nearby blocks. They don't have much external signage but they do have a lot of outdoor streetside seating, so it makes you wonder what everyone else knows. Inside, they've got Coava coffee, efficient staff, and an old-school cafe vibe. With multiple couches (one of my main criteria for a coffee shop) and free wifi, this is a place to work, meet people, and slow down. Great long hours - they're open 6am-6pm. read more

A part of the third wave coffee movement (#1), this second location of Albina Press made big headlines back in the day for being the next step in coffee pioneer Kevin Fuller's (#2) vision for making coffee more than just a drink. The intentions were genuine and things have progressed in a way where Albina Press is one of the most recognized coffee brands in the city. It's not too dissimilar from its OG sister location in North Portland (#3), where they still brew high quality caffeinated drinks with the vibes of a homey communal space with chairs, couches, and individual tables for a proper coffee date, WFH worthy WiFi, and plenty of anti-war propaganda in the self-serve water area in the back. The latte art was on point, the cold brew was most definitely strong, cafe au lait was milky and foamy in the best way, and the americano drinks were fabulous. While their hours (#4) aren't particularly suited for after-work hours, they do an excellent job of keeping their space clean and the vibes low key throughout the morning and afternoon. Prices are good for Portland standards. Most drinks are $5 and under, even for the largest sizes. The limited but high quality pastry selection is also appreciated. The service was good overall, just be certain with the order and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. Lines can happen, albeit rarely, and I would encourage most folks to drink the coffee on the spot. The space is part of the experience (be weary of the restrooms tho), so enjoy the low key ambiance with a drinkable jumpstart to the day. Good natural lighting, very productive atmosphere, not overly loud. The service was very quick, I got my cafe au lait in probably 30 seconds flat. The outdoor seating would be super nice on a sunny day. I also ordered a Marionberry scone, which didn't have as much actual fruit as I would've liked. There was a little clump of berries on one side, but the rest was rather plain. My only real negative was that the bathroom was a little gross and there was quite a bit of profane graffiti everywhere. read more

I'd once been driving from Tacoma to Astoria and somewhere along Portland felt the need for an espresso. So I got off I5 and ended up at Albina Press. I had only a dim recollection all these years and finally had the chance to return on a recent trip to Portland. It's still the sweet down to earth neighborhood spot with excellent coffee and friendly service. But what I did not expect was one of the best iced lattes I've ever had -- which I actually ordered for my boyfriend. Pistachio Lemon sounded weird to me but was nutty, mellow, and refreshing. Wow so good. Also, there are picnic tables in the backyard which is a perfect spot to sit in the shade and enjoy your drinks on a summer day. read more

BEASTED! I am on the hunt for the perfect Portland coffee shop and have yet to find it, however albina was pretty good! My go to drink recently has been a london fog and I was very pleased with my order today. The oat milk was steamed well and the tea was loose leaf which is always my preferred way. There was plenty of seating indoors and out and a complimentary water station as well. No extra charge for alternative milk too! Everything was good, just missing that wow factor for me I guess. read more

Albina press has a good vibe to it, with outdoor seating and indoor seating with comfy sofas to sip your coffee or tea on and outings with your friends. I got the honey latte and they served it quick and fast, as well as hot and beautiful with some signature latte art. The price for the coffee is standard and their syrups are seasonal. Receiving my coffee, it was the perfect sweetness! However, I wouldn't say the same for the chai latte my friend got. Besides the coffee, the service was good and the atmosphere was vibrant on a nice and sunny day. I would recommend this cafe if you are in the area if the others do not work out. :) read more

Niche spot located in the Albina District and I had almost forgotten about this place. I only been here once since I've moved back to Oregon about four years ago... So it was a nice memory shock. The service here is great and the coffee and baked goods they have are equally delicious. It's a great spot to come in relax and cozy up in autumn and just read the newspaper or get some work done or read a good book. Nice little area to explore around there as well read more

my partner and i live on the west side of the metro area, so we decided to spend a weekend on the east side of portland to explore it more in depth than we've been able to. i was so pleased to find an Albina Press right across the street from our guest house. i'd been wanting to try Albina Press for some time. even though they were busy, the barista was kind and cheerful, took time to answer my questions, and was patient while i decided how to order my coffee. i enjoyed a perfectly made cafe au lait, flavored with raw sugar and all spice. i also appreciated how cute and cozy the space is, with a variety of different types of seating available for people to hang out. shout out to the reviewer who identified this business as being anti-genocide with their 1-star review, as that detail made me even more enthusiastic to support this business. read more

Oooh actually good coffee! So good! Both the cold brew and the latte were absolutely lovely. And you know - I'm really happy they are working so hard to keep their employees and customers safe. Sure, it's cold outside, but it really ISN'T safe to be de-masking indoors. So kudos. It's gonna bring me back more often. The barista was so nice and friendly. I hadn't been to Albina Press in a long time, but it was as great as I remembered it! There wasn't any mention of wearing masks, just a few signs and staff is wearing masks. I saw a review from about 6 months ago that said it was strongly recommended, so that must have eased up. The coffee was exactly what you would expect, amazing. My friend had a scone and I had a rice crispy treat, both were delicious. I really liked that they had some different but not odd coffee syrups to try, I had allspice, which was really good and not too overpowering or sweet. It paired well with the coffee. We sat at a table in the back, it's a good amount of seating, not too crowded but not spread out. Overall it was a nice experience. Would be a good place to work, study, read, or meet a friend. read more

Walked here on one of my work breaks after a friend had mentioned it's one of their favorite shops in the area. They've got covered seating in front as well as seats inside the shop. I was in the mood for a treat so I ordered an almond milk latte and thought it was quite good. I've had a few disappointing ones from other shops but this one was yum! I have had some nice visits to this place but this last one was miserable. The coffee is fine, the space is cozy, the location is convenient and they have the basic pastry type snacks. The service was pretty neutral until this last visit, when I actually needed a little extra help. The two folks working behind the bar were really rude and unkind. I know service work is exhausting, and I try to have empathy for all workers but when someone gets angry at me for showing disappointment and confusion on my face, that's just not cool. read more

Wins for this coffee shop: They have oatmilk, pastries, and Baristas who know how to make legit espresso drinks. This place is alright, but leaves a few things to be desired. The coffee was decent, the baristas were totally nice, and it had a cute atmosphere. I had a biscuit, but they apparently have no way to heat them up or toast them, after they've been sitting in the display window. So it was hard. I'm rather turned off by locations that don't offer WiFi in an effort to shorten the time people stay there, because that literally never works. People will continue to camp out, which is kind of why people even go to coffee shops, and they'll usually just bring work that doesn't require the internet or a computer, or just use their computers sans internet. I get the intention, but it simply does not work in any large-scale fashion, and is just one less service that lessens the experience. That being said, it is a cute place to go and chat with friends, read a book, or type up a paper if you don't mind the ambient noise, which is very minimal. read more

My neighborhood coffee shop, and it's a good one. They serve Coava beans and do a superb job with espresso drinks of all sorts. The atmosphere is light and open, and most people have their noses in their own business, whatever that is. There are many small tables, some larger ones and a few couches, and so there's a spot for everyone and every little group. Albina Press is one of my favorite places to sit and get something done with a laptop. Wifi is speedy (around 60Mbps) and there are abundant outlets. As with any public Wifi, connect with a VPN and you're all set. read more

I am not a coffee drinker which makes it interesting that I was in a coffee place, and even more intruiging is; why would I Yelp a coffee place not being a coffee person? Tea. Black tea. Black tea with sassafras root to be exact. Served as an iced tea by a friendly barista to top things off. It was like a perfectly refreshing root beer without the annoying sugary aftertaste and foam to deal with (sometimes foam is cool). Just my two cents. read more

Mmm hmmm, they went and did it again. The *new* (sparkly) Albina Press kicks some major coffee booty in Portland, once again. A fine new Stumptown coffee-scented shop - the new one pays homage to the old one--with expansive white walls (functioning as art gallery, of course), old wood floors - and a TON more space. Oh, I love it. Really nice environment, next door to Sapphire. And it goes without saying that my special treat of a mocha was creamy, smooth, rich, and complex. A minor disclaimer in that I should mention a friend of mine happens to date one of the baristas there, but I would have loved it anyway even without that 6-degrees connection. Go in and have Matt or Billy brew you a cup that puts all other coffees to shame. Mmmm. Yummy. p.s. I know the Albina Press can be known for being a tad on the coffee shop snobbery side (ok, more than a tad) but I am willing to overlook any signs of pretension to savor that perfect cup. Just recently discovered this coffeehouse gem in my neighborhood. It's like trekking through the jungles of Coffee-rica, avoiding the dangerous species hipster-us importanus and stumbling into an oasis of relaxation. They brew Stumptown and they brew it right. The cup of it I had this past weekend was the best cup of coffee I've had in months, if not longer. Sometimes it's not quite that stellar, but always good. It's much better when they have the soymilk available. I love their muffins, they're not too sweet and I don't feel like I'm having a piece of cake. Their hot chocolate is super cute as it has chocolatey designs on top and they've always got a foam art going on their coffees. I also ordered a London Fog that was amazing. There's pastries if you're also wanting to snack on something. There's free wifi and plenty of seating area and space to work/study. There's street and residential parking. Cafe Lattes are what I like to order when I go to coffee houses, but I chose to try the mocha instead while at Albina. I ordered the 12oz which was $4.00 -- just a tad pricey, I think -- and I requested soy milk to be added. The mocha was delicious, and I really digged the foam. Service was friendly and they take some time prepping the drinks, but the wait is worth it. The shop in general is clean, but the couches my friend and I sat on had a plenty of crumbs; the coffee table was also crumby.
