I love this little corner coffee shop. Particularly the baristas are sweethearts. Super friendly and kind. Also their matcha is rich and delicious. Matcha can be soooo hit or miss at coffee shops if they don't use good matcha. Their product is high quality. Their menu is straight and to the point. Came here because I wanted to study one weekend and thought that it was just okay. The inside of the cafe is pretty nice. It's clean, with lots of different sizes of tables (for collaborating vs. working alone), and big windows for natural lighting. My boyfriend and I ordered a black drip coffee and a matcha latte and it was pretty decent. I do agree with others that it was overpriced for what it was, but I'm not surprised. The service was okay. Although I was the only one who ordered within a time frame of fifteen minutes, my drinks took much longer than 5 minutes to make. In addition, the baristas weren't particularly nice? I stopped by Heart for a matcha latte and a muffin. The ambience was good and it would be a great place to read, write, or chat. There is no wi-fi at least, at the time of this review. The baristas were very friendly. The matcha latte was made well and had the leaf latte art. It wasn't sweetened so next time, I may get it sweetened. The raspberry muffin was delicious. A friend kindly bought me a drink here lately... She didn't tip, due to the high prices and tipping getting out of hand in the US. After she paid, the server noticed there was no tip and treated us rudely. He nearly tossed the pastry plate my friend ordered onto the table in front of the iPad, and when our drinks were ready, he didn't inform us; he just placed them down, and we had to assume they were ours. This beautiful space has been a welcome addition to this corner of Woodstock. I live a few blocks away and it's nice to have an option that doesn't involve trekking all the way into the neighborhood center. I also like this space much more than other Woodstock cafes I've tried. The coffee is reliably good and the service is pleasant and good. That said -- $6 for a 12 oz latte seems absurdly expensive. (And you cannot order anything larger!) To be clear, that's the baseline with no add-ins, no substitutions, just milk and espresso. Add in the minimum tip for the barista and you've just ponied up $7 for a tiny beverage. I want to like it more, and I want to support local cafes -- but this pricing seems prohibitive beyond the occasional splurge. read more

On the upside Heart has a nice ambience, the staff is well trained and really know their coffee. It comes at a price though.... $35 a pound at the date of this review! It's sold in bags that look like 12 oz but actually are only 10.5 oz.. My biggest issue with Heart is not even the prices but the arrogance that everyone should be drinking medium and light-medium roasts. The anti-Daddy Starbucks crowd has swung so far that you will get a lot of attitude if you want to buy medium-dark or dark roast beans. They don't have any. Nice coffee shop in a good location with friendly baristas. There's a few other coffee shops several blocks away but I prefer the coffee and baked goods here. I would recommend the honey cardamom latte and korvapuusti combination. There seems to only be 2 people working at a time and due to covid rules, the line will wrap around the building around 10 am. I came here with my daughter looking for a Portland equivalent of Sparrow Bakery's Ocean Roll. We got the korvapuusti, the flur de sel chocolate cookie, spiced chai, and a honey cardamom latte. Everything was delicious, flavorful but not too sweet. The korvapuusti, a Finnish cardamom roll, was very delicious, and flavor-wise was very similar to the ocean roll, but with a more bread-like texture (rather than a croissant-like texture), and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The cookie was very chocolaty and dense, and also extremely delicious. The spicy chai was very spice-y, so if you like a more simple chai, this might not be for you. The honey cardamom latte was very smooth and fragrant. The Woodstock location was a beautiful, clean, modern/rustic coffee shop and we are so happy we tried it out. Heart has been in my bookmarks for a very long time but I've never had the time to go due to distance. When I saw they were building one down the street from my house, I was super excited!! It took forever for them to finish building and when they did open, it was for very short hours (closed at 1pm) so that delayed me going for even longer. I recently drove by in the evening and saw people inside! I looked up the time and saw that they changed their hours (close at 6pm) so I made time to come in one of my days off of work. I came at around 10ish on a Monday and it was packed!! There weren't any tables open but I managed to find a spot at the higher tables. There is plenty of lighting no matter where you sit and I love the look of the place (I'm a sucker for marble). I ordered an 8oz vanilla mocha, it was on the stronger side but I'm not complaining. We came here on a Saturday morning and had a great time! I got a cappuccino and my wife got a caffe mocha. The venue was clean and was relatively quiet-- we were able to hear each other just fine (lots of places have echo and/or are super loud and you can't hear your own voice). I think the consensus from both of us was that the espresso was pretty legit but the pastry selection didn't really excite us. Overall, Heart's coffee is pretty solid-- a welcome addition to the Woodstock neighborhood. Its right up there will a lot of the other local roasteries in SE. read more

We loved Heart Coffee House so much, we went out of our way to visit 2 days in a row. With as many options as there are in Portland - this is a high compliment. After visiting the first day, we realized a lot of people in PDX serve Heart Coffee...and with good reason; it's a delicious roast, not bitter at all. We were especially impressed with the toast plates and found the soft cooked eggs divinely perfect. The spelt toast was simple and satisfying, buttered just the way I love it. This is a neat addition to Woodstock. It has a sleek, hip feeling, which is very different from the vibe of Woodstock. As another reviewer mentioned, it is very different from First Cup down the road; I love First Cup because it's warm, friendly, diverse, and cozy. This is not that, but, I knew that going in! It's visibly different. And, I love to experience new things, especially when they're good! I had a very mixed experience. What I like about Heart on Woodstock is that it's spacious. There are plenty of tables. Weirdly (because it's not coffee), I had the best cup of green tea at Heart! It was grassy, cozy, and really hit the spot! They serve the tea in tiny cups that are perfect for cold hands, which was good because with all the windows, my hands were like ice! I found the service hit or miss. One of their staff came around and asked if we wanted more hot water, which was really kind, but, another one, though not unfriendly, was sort of indifferent. Okay, I get it. It's just a job. But, when you're paying a lot for a cup of tea (or coffee), it's awesome to have staff jazzed about it! I ordered a small chocolate cookie with fleur de sel and found it to be rock hard and inedible. Good thing! I'm trying to reduce sugar. I threw it away immediately. Thanks, Heart! However, one of the things I like about this Heart (not sure if the other one on E. Burn has this), is that they serve actual food beyond bakery items. They have toast, breakfast things, and their salads sound amazing! However, they weirdly don't start serving salad until 11. I was there in the morning and wanted to take one for lunch. Oh, well! One day, I'll be there after 11 and will be able to try it. All in all, it was a mixed experience. However, it IS the new kid on the block in a part of town that is changing, and I know it takes time for business issues to even out. Great vanilla latte. Haven't yet tried the others but I intend to. I was initially disappointed that they turn off their WiFi on weekends to keep the crowd controlled, but I totally understand it now because it's nice and peaceful this morning! I decided to stay and order a latte anyway since I made the trek out here, and it was delicious. Going to return on Fridays when I can actually use WiFi to work and enjoy some things on the menu! First off, this place is beautiful and the coffee was very good. We had both had there ice Americana over ice, with two of the blends they had in stock. Nutty caffeinated goodness. My only gripe with this place is with girl behind the counter a red head Caucasian girl with glasses. We kindly asked if we could get our croissant warmed up. She said, "we don't do that". I'm puzzled, there an oven with bell peppers roasting and a toaster in the back, why cant you warm up my croissant? Granted the croissant was yummy, but the service and lack of "bed side manner" is less then impressive. Otherwise a great coffee joint. Overall decent coffee (not the best I've had in Portland,) and decent food (expensive for a TINY sandwich, but tasty.) The staff in there is sometimes friendly, sometimes standoffish. When you pay that much for food/drink I feel that it would be nice if the workers were more often friendly than not, but what do I know? I mean, we're in Portland after all. Ha. As others mentioned, there isn't any parking, which wasn't a problem for me given that I lived a block away. It's kinda cold/sterile inside too, so not my style of decor. 7March18 @ 1:pm New coffee shop at corner of 52nd and Woodstock. Order at counter and coffee is served at your table. We had two lattes. Quick friendly service. Coffee arrived within 5 minutes. Lots of hard surfaces in this place. Wood tables and chairs, concrete floors. Good music. Hardly any power outlets that we could see. The hard surfaces make it loud in there and with the music a bit difficult to carry on a conversation. Lots of windows to look out at the traffic going by. The window seat tables are too high for the seats but the stool tables and the benches looked ok. We had a good time sitting at the window drinking coffee and looking out the window. It is expensive here. The small latte is $4.50 which is the most we have ever paid for an 8oz latte. The latte had deep crema but was bitter which might indicate stale beans. read more

Some insane novelty-seeking impulse entered my brain and sent me here this morning instead of my Friday regular spot, Papacinno's just down the street. I don't know what I hated more about this place: the pretentious vibe or the accompanying price-gouging. It felt like it was designed and run remotely by someone from LA who had seen too many episodes of Portlandia. Sigh. The retail value of the Lululemon outfits on the yoga moms filling the joint probably exceeded that of my car. The staff was so forcefully cheerful I felt like I'd walked into a convention of pod-people. I paid $3.00 for a tiny cup of drip coffee (maybe 10 ounces) and was told A) only one size for for-here orders and B) refills $2.00! I know know coffee is a luxury and I'm paying for the space and the WiFi, but come on. Anyway, said coffee was quite tasty, so two stars for that. But I will be happily returning to Papaccino's and reminding my brain that sometimes the old ways are passed after all. read more

I wish Heart had more flavor options than just "house made vanilla". For me, this translates to overpriced, wonky ratio sugar that doesn't taste like whatever they claim. The house made vanilla was a miss for me. The exception to this is Courier's vanilla, with flecks of vanilla in the syrup. I also love the Holy Kakow brand lots of shops use, like Kind Coffee on Belmont. The line was pretty long on a Saturday morning, prob about 5-7 people in front of me. There was a cashier, and someone running interference coming thru the line taking orders. The problem was drinks were getting made twice. Communication seemed imperfect. It took probably 10 minutes to get a drink which is fine, for a Saturday morning. Cold brew is only one size, 12 oz, for $4. Overall, I'm just not wowed. It was okay. I probably won't go back, between the price, the service and the house made vanilla being the only option. read more

i want to give this place 5 stars, but... 1) life is way too short for coffee shops that dont open until 8am. there are many times i would have been eager to give this place my business if they opened at like 6 or even 7. 8 is pretty much the afternoon from a coffee standpoint 2) "large" is very small 3) they used to have a really amazing breakfast menu, with veggies that seemed like they were home pickled, but i guess they had to scale it back pre-pandemic to just scones and sugary baked things behind a glass, because they werent profiting from it. having said all that, the staff is really friendly, and their coffee is high quality. the biggest thing that irks me is that they dont open until i have already shifted gears past my morning rituals, and i end up begrudgingly getting nasty starbucks drive thru instead. read more

I am not a huge coffee drinker, but it is a nice little treat when I am catching up with friends or with my significant other. This modern coffee shop has several branches in Portland, and this location is on 52nd and Woodstock. It can get pretty busy on the weekends, but it's a great place to catch up with pals. I ordered either the turmeric or cardamon spiced latte, and it had a nice little spice kick to it. It's always good to have choices. I think this now makes for three coffee shops on SE Woodstock (First Cup, Papaccino's, and Heart). I primarily go to First Cup, so be making a lot of comparisons it's that coffee shop. At Heart I paid $4.50 for a 8 oz spicy chai, I was given the non-dairy option for free (saving 50 cents) after having complained about the lack of dairy-free options. The taste was mediocre, while the chai at First Cup, while on the sweeter side; makes a better chai. Heart has Coava Coffee, and cold brew coffee, so high marks for that. Heart Coffee is on par with most other local coffee shops, they have quality coffee, so they have that. But I think they miss the mark with it comes with their limited drink options, questionable customer service, and lack of allergen friendly food and drinks. I would summarize Heart as a good choice if you are seeking quality coffee, but aren't concerned about value; while being in a minimalist vibe with uppity staff. They have a lack of allergen friendly beverages and food, they have an almond and walnut non-dairy selection, a combination of the two. But that's all. No coconut, hemp, or soy milk. I feel they should at least have an almond milk and moreover a coconut milk option, like most coffee shops. It takes extra effort to include allergen friendly or vegan options, but it's more inclusive and I consider it to be a component of service. I heard they have gluten-free porridge, and oatmeal. However, they have no gluten-free pastry items. Really? Even a subpar Starbucks has GF options. I boycotted Starbucks over ten years ago as only 8.5% of their coffee is Fair Trade (google it, what percent of starbucks coffee is fair trade), and they are a monopolistic corporation. Come on, it's Starbucks, do I even need to elaborate? Perhaps one of the most notable aspects of Heart is there service, or lack thereof. While the cashier was good, patient, and helpful. The barista was, frankly, terrible. I remember the day, the 25th of this month, around one in the afternoon. They verbally scoffed when I asked if this was my chai, followed by "Yeah, I think that's chai, I don't know if it's Your Chai". Really? Did that attitude come for free or do I have to pay extra? The barista needs to go back to the Pearl District and can take their "Your lucky I served you" attitude, with them. I experience this kind of service too often, and I'm pretty done with it. I have a choice, and I'll choose First Cup. They have consistently good service, when when you're there you're made to feel welcomed with a more relaxed vibe. Good food including allergen friendly food options. Smaller on demand breakfast items, yes, but more pastries. Larger drink menu, and options including more allergen friendly (non-dairy, nut free) options. First Cup makes an effort to cater to those with food and drinks allergies. Not necessarily the most important thing (unless you don't have any food allergies of course) but the frequency of food allergies is so common, it's not something to be dismissed either. read more

Meh- parking non existent. Interior clean, comfortable and upscale. Had a croissant with hazelnut and chocolate. Okay for $5. Friend had bowl of yogurt with fruit/nuts for $8.
