Located inside the Powell's on Hawthorne, this is a great place to spend some time. Tables are close together but if you snag a spot, settle in to do some reading or working. They serve Stumptown coffee primarily I believe, and also have a variety of teas and pastries. It's been open here since 1997 which is pretty impressive. They have a second location on Mississippi. I think the shark art is quite fun. read more

Stopped in for a mocha and an onion bagel with cream cheese while I waited for someone. Nice staff, mocha was made perfectly. Giving 4 stars because they could spruce up the place a bit. It's a small area but they could give it a little more life. Looks a bit run down. Maybe add some plants or something. read more

Stop #7 - On "The One Day Portland Adventure" TLDR - This coffee shop is high quality, with minimal seating. I needed this stop. Not only was the coffee super tasty, but the day of adventure was becoming a little abstract. But what stop was this? Did it count as a separate stop since it was technically inside Powell's? Either way, it was a welcome interlude after the first 6 stops of the day. - - - - I had to put on my earphones to avoid the break up conversation happening next to me. (I am totally not kidding). The decaf iced americano was delicious. Vibrant. Nutty. Great water to espresso ratio. Furthermore, this was a perfect place to sit and plan my next adventure place. I noticed that there was a theater across the street that was showing movies, but I worried that if I didn't keep moving, I might get sleepy. The lady at a previous business had recommended I check out Mount Tabor. So armed with Yelp and Google maps I decided to check out how far away it was. Since there was a plethora of lime, scooters and lots of neighborhoods between the coffee shop and the park, I decided that it would be my next stop. But not before spending a good 30 minutes reading a book and enjoying the delicious iced Americano. read more

Barista at 5:30 on 11/13/25 absolutely went crazy and kicked out a woman who ordered Tea because she thought she was sick. She wasn't. It was so unprofessional and rude everyone got up and left the coffee shop. This barista should be fired immediately. It was ridiculous. read more

My favorite café in Portland. Consistently excellent coffee and an intimate setting adjacent to a bookshop. What more could one ask for? Apparently, some are concerned about the service, e.g., not being entertained by the baristas... it's a coffee shop, not the circus. Anyway, great coffee (the music selection is nice too), and the baristas are very friendly! read more

Good coffee / crappy snooty service - they deleted my previous comment, which really just validates the quality of people running it

Lots of tea options, great coffee, chill old Portland vibes. Artsy and down to earth, and they play records in there sometimes which is fun. Very relaxed and real personality from the baristas who've worked there for years. Love! read more

Sweet little coffee (and treats) shop accessible through the bookstore. Very comfortable place with delightful drinks and very friendly staff members. read more

I enjoyed the special of the day (chai I think) it was tasty - the cafe is a little cramped - people walking "on top" of others to get their table or to pick up their drink. It's attached to the bookstore which of course is nice - I need to try it again before I can really form a solid opinion. read more

Pretty yummy. I liked their milk. My drink was good looking and good tasting. Felt nice to get out of the holiday chaos.

Cute spot inside Powells books. Several tables and open late. Great coffee, some food options. read more

This coffee shop it right inside Powell's and it's a great place to stop for a hot beverage before or after shopping around. I came here to study and enjoyed an oat milk latte while I worked. This coffee shop is a great place to work and the coffee was delicious! I loved the coffee art. read more

The coffee is amazing. Had my first pumpkin latte of the season and it was perfection! Not to sweet.... Just perfect! But let's talk about that Marionberry pop tart! It's killer good! You need to try it! Best little hidden treasure! read more

On this particular day, the rain was relentless. Heavier than usual. I popped into The Fresh Pot for a hot beverage to warm me up.

Amazing! AMAZING!!! Coffee and pastries wow!! I am a coffee connoisseur! This has been one of my favorite coffee shops I've ever tried in my life. I stayed in Portland for a few days with my boyfriend and was very determined to find a great shop and that I did! The lattes were so smooth and well balanced with no bitter aftertaste! Perfect sweetness and very bold! I also ordered a bag of their house coffee beans and boy was that a great idea! It pulled almost the exact same beautiful shots out of my Breville Espresso machine and tasted just like the cafe's latte. Also ordered a jalepeno and cheddar scone with the Marionberry pop tart (10/10)! The pop tart melted in your mouth. Please give this cafe a try if you are in town. :) read more

Location: I will not give advice on the location because I am visiting Portland. But I will give my observations: It looks like a safe area, and parking seems moderately easy to find. The People: Friendly barista. The Drinks: - Cold brew: Good! Work/Study: Amazing study spot. I got solid work done. I got my electronics charged. The Venue: Nice venue. Has plenty of indoor seating. Upshot: A solid spot to get some work done in Hawthorne Blvd.! read more

everything here tastes really good but for some reason no matter what you say the coffee is always lukewarm at best. i think it might have the coldest cup of jo in the city. its right by my house and its almost as if every time i go back they heat it to a slightly lower and lower temperature. i'm convinced one day the temperature will sink so low that the coffee will become iced. i'm scared actually. read more

Great tasting coffee! Little bit expensive and mediocre customer service, I'm not a regular customer there. So I can't base one interaction on service but overall it was an odd interaction. It is a COVID time too so masks and exchange of money and coffee make it unusual as well. Had to order from the door/window. Not allowed due due to COVID. Looks like a neat place to visit inside. I would have liked to see inside more. Also no straws allowed so prepare to sip your drink from a sippy cup like you are 3. read more

decent coffee, nice enough staff. the vibes are immaculate! nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

I was in need of a quick caffeine fix this past weekend and just wanted straight espresso. I love that the barista at Fresh Pot refused to sell me a three-shot espresso to go. She insisted on me taking my espresso in chinaware, the way espresso is supposed to be drunk. I also loved how she preheated my espresso cup with a little hot water before pouring in the espresso. The true rich flavor of coffee, like I experienced with Fresh Pot's Stumptown beans, can only be appreciated as espresso, not drenched in latte, mocha or capuccino. read more

What does a person who does not drink coffee have any business being in a coffee shop? Well, to be honest Fresh Pot is attached to Powell's Books, so that is a good start. But, even though I do not partake in the beverage that makes 99.9995% of Portland function in the mornings, there are still items one can get and in my case that happens to be hot chocolate. Most coffee shops tend to have hot chocolate on their menu, but several phone it in while others like Stumptown use Woodblock and New Seasons uses Holy Kakow, Jim & Patty's does a mean Mexican hot chocolate and Starbucks (even though most think of it as evil) does a white hot chocolate that I have never seen at any other place at all. So, I've made my rounds. Fresh Pot, as said above, is part of Powell's and I had time to kill before work. The barista asked for my level of chocolate on a 1-10 scale. Funny. So I replied that my level would be CHOCOLATE. For only $3. It was as good as advertised (if it were advertised). The hot chocolate was killer. It was up there with some of the good ones and reasonably priced. I didn't catch what sort of chocolate was used but it's rich. If you are a hot chocolate type of individual than Fresh Pot is place you will deem appropriate to get your daily dose of Vitamin CHOCOLATE. Enjoy. read more

The "Fresh Pot" sign in the front caught my attention, and the smell of coffee sucked me in. Great tasting lattes, pastries from local bakeries, good music, free Wi-Fi, it's attached to Powell's and there are a few cozy window seats for your people-watching pleasure. Why would ANYONE choose Starbuck's??? read more

This is a cute little coffee place inside of Powell's. I ordered a chocolate bread but it was so dry and flavorless. Alongside of that I also had a chai tea which was okay. Nothing too significantly good or bad. You do have to enter through the bookstore to actually get in. Don't try the closed door read more

Let me just say, this place is awesome. It was my last day in Portland, it was raining, and we wanted a cup of hot chocolate before it was time to head to the airport. Three options: Peet's, Starbucks, or Fresh Pot. Clearly, we chose Fresh Pot. The barista took her time (in the best way) making our hot chocolates with love and created the cutest designs with chocolate sauce. I, of course, took photos and posted them to yelp immediately. Super nice and friendly, and best of all, a damn tasty hot chocolate! read more

Good service | Good location $ Can't say that I actually had one of their drinks (yet), but we ended up getting a bag of Stumptown coffee beans from them. Nice little cozy coffee place right next door to Powell's Books. Quick, friendly service. I was looking for a caffeine fix while I was on Hawthorne with some friends, and Fresh Pot popped up on my search. Great choice! Genuinely friendly staff, and Stumptown Coffee is always a win in my book. Since it's connected to Powell's, it had a pretty quiet scene - everybody was either reading or on their computers. In other words, great place to read or study, not a great place to carry on a conversation like I was trying to do. Sorry neighbors! Actually, in regards to studying, the place is more dim than I would like, so I probably wouldn't try to read for too long here, but laptop stuff would be great! read more

Great place to stop by in the winter season. The sever was nice and also makes a very good coffee. I got mocha and the art made by him was very cute. Granted, I neglected to specify what I wanted a "12 Oz. for here" of. (Mental cogs slip sometimes. Age thing. Sorry.) But no call for the barista to ask for clarification with open hostility and a world-class stink eye. Naaaa. Bye. They probably have okay coffee. Didn't stick around to find out. read more

19Dec18 @ 12:30pm Coffee shop inside Powell's on Hawthorne. Small with about 10 tables along a wall and the coffee and bagels on the other wall. We had two 8oz lattes. The coffee was good with no acidity and good crema. Service was quick and friendly. The music was quite good and we enjoyed the atmosphere. After we browsed Powell's and bought some holiday cards. Nice coffee shop and nice book store. read more

I got a honey lavender latte, hemp milk, with a CBD shot. Legitimately the best latte I think I've ever had and I was a barista for years.

Good music and tasty quality tea (same found at Palio's Dessert House) made for a good Saturday night study spot. I really like the Scarlet tea, a tangy red herbal brew, and Fire, a biting ginger brew. Stays open until 11 on Saturday unlike other coffee shops that close around dinner time. Woo! read more

One of my oldest haunts. It's a great place to camp out with a laptop or book, and a one of the cheaper cafes I've found in Portland. An in-house coffee (Stumptown) runs $2.25 and comes with a refill. Baristas are friendly and play good tunes. It can be tricky getting a table, as there aren't too many, but most people are happy to share theirs while you wait for your own. They're also open late (like Powell's), which isn't common among Portland cafes. read more

Pretty cool place. Basically Starbucks but more pretentious (in a good way!) and a little more expensive. Granted, their coffee does tastes like they care more than Starbucks and they also have more non-dairy options than just soy which is nice. They also have gluten free baked goods which was awesome!! The gluten free coffee cake was very delicious. The place was a big grungy but that's Portland for you...check out their bathroom while you're there! It's covered in drawings and quotes-- I happened to have a sharpie in my bag and added a few things myself :) read more

Amazingly rude staff. Treats everyone like an idiot. Talked shit about a customer as soon as he left, loud enough for us to hear across the shop. I was embarrassed for her and for the entire store. Not coming here again. read more

Change your hours -- says you're open until 11pm (6/27/20) but nobody's there. At least, nobody's answering the phone and it's not a big enough place that you couldn't get to the phone in ten rings or less. An underrated cup of coffee. I'd come back again. Covid precautions were taken seriously, all of the indoor seating was removed.

We were early for an appointment and needed a place to kill time and get something for breakfast. Yelp pointed us to Fresh Pot. It did give us a place to hang out. It is a kind of minimalist spot with maximum signage scolding you for one thing or another. We were there before the book store opened so the stern not telling you to enter through the bookstore didn't apply. So many signs! It is a scruffy place with fairly slow service but it got the job done, caffeine delivered. And a tasty muffin. read more
