The Iced Hazelnut Latte was as good as I remembered when I first tried it at the downtown location a few years ago. It had a true hazelnut flavor, which other places don't do as well because Case Study makes their own syrups. Their lattes have a nice balance of the espresso, house made syrups, and milk. I also liked the Iced Vanilla Latte, Iced Mocha, and Cold Brew. The service was 4 stars as the baristas quickly prepared the 5 star coffee. With some friends, my wife and I were on a coffee tasting Northwest and Pearl District tour with Thirdwave - specializing in coffee tours around Portland. The first stop - Case Study. As many times as I've walked by I didn't realize how fantastic the coffee would be. The tasting experience and the vibe inside and outside was also amazing in an old Victorian style home converted to a coffee shop. I definitely will go back. Burnside roast was bitter, not too sweet, not so much acid and a delightful taste. Liked it. The blend made with hazelnuts was unbelievably delicious with the taste of a lot of hazelnuts. Who knew that this nutty coffee would surprise my pallet. Liked it. Latte - not a big fan because I'm not into extra sugar, but if you are, you'll you'll love it! I will be a Case Study Coffee fanatic for as long as I exist. Yelp doesn't allow me to post all the photos that I want too because there are too many. I've gone about once a week for the last three years. I buy the deviation blend and use it every day at home. It's perfectly balanced for espresso. I am a HUGE fan of their mocha and I always get extra chocolate. I often aggressively crave their iced jasmine matcha and have several times made a second stop in the middle of the work day. My FAVORITE drink they ever had was the Rose Cardamom latte February 2024. I wish that drink were permanent and available forever. I typically make a cardamom latte every day at home. Their masala latte is the fall is also amazing. And I love the chili mocha in the winter. The staff is always SO NICE and I have had many amazing conversations with them. The inside has lots of cool things to shop or look at while waiting. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The blue tables and are so pretty. Don't skip on the ocean roll pastry. I wish they had chocolate croissants. In high school I prayed to work nearby a Case Study and that prayer has been answered. Easily best coffee in the world. read more

I'm a tea drinker. Most coffee shops have no idea how to make a cup of tea. At other coffee shops, I'm handed a pot of tepid water, a tea cup, and a tea bag. This results in an inferior cup of tea. When I ordered tea at Case Study, they poured hot water into the pot, which warmed the pot. Then, they poured the water out, added a tea bag and refilled the pot with hot water! Wow! Plus: atmosphere is nice, lots of natural light, decent amount of seating, chairs are super comfortable even for a fat babe (super-fats beware that chairs have full sides and may not be accessible for all), and the music doesn't carry over too much into the seating areas, which is nice for conversation and workflow. My dry cappuccino was actually dry, which is surprisingly difficult for many places using non-dairy milk. Minus: despite being a dry cap, flavor-wise it was still just average. Both baristas seemed a bit grumpy, and music in the entryway (where ordering/pickup happens) is WAY too loud--you can barely hear the baristas to order, let alone hear when they call that your order is up. Lastly, while these pendant lights are super neat, I've watched no less than three different people get knocked in the head/face by them while trying to sit down or stand up from their seat (none of whom were exceedingly tall)... maybe consider raising them up by 12" or so to minimize the head injuries? read more

It's in an old house and it seems like there's no air conditioning so it can feel hot and stale inside on a hot summer day. They also have a few bar type seats outside in the back. Truly one of the most unenjoyable cups of coffee ever put to my lips. The bourbon caramel syrup in the cold brew instantly caused the fat of the butter in the caramel to curdle and leave a heinous, undrinkable mouth feel. I can still feel the layer of fat coating my tongue 20 minutes later. I'm sure the syrup is maybe fine in a hot drink, but with the amount of care into the menu, you'd think they'd warn you about this happening in their cold beverages. Store closes at 4 on Sundays. Arrived at 358 for a cup of coffee and to buy beans as a gift from Portland. Ended up being policed by the upstairs nail salon beautician because I mistook the side door for the coffee shop entrance and then was told the coffee shop was closed by Case Study staff despite them having seen me before 4pm. No apology, no consideration. Instead, I was treated like a criminal and intruder. Heard great things about this Portland coffee shop, but they lost my business. Horrific customer experience. Wonder if they would have shooed me off had I been fair skinned. Sterling Coffee was around the corner and still open. I recommend Sterling ! Case Study was beyond disappointing. Treat prospective clientele with grace if you want to keep your shop open. Wont be coming back and wont be buying beans from Case Study. read more
