Quad shot mocha.

Was just in a couple hours ago and they were actively roasting beans, it smelled amazing in there. What a cute little spot, the baristas were friendly and fantastic, and the cold brew was de-lish. And look at this cute mocha my friend got!

Cool atmosphere here! There's an area where the roasting equipment is, and indoor area for seating, and a few outdoor tables too. The staff was friendly and the drinks came out very quickly. The coffee was delicious, one of the best coffee roasters in the city!

Our barista was very knowledgeable of coffee and helped guide me through deciding what I would have. My boyfriend had a lavender coffee that was so smooth and creamy. In retrospect, I really wish we had bought a bag to go! I totally enjoyed this coffee shop and definitely plan to visit again when I am back in Portland.

Coffee bean bags at Coava, The Public Brew Bar & Roastery.

The boyfriend and I were in Portland on a mini-vacation and came across Coava's Public Brew Bar & Roasters during our Third Wave Coffee Tour. We learned a lot about their roasting process, from bean to bag. It was pleasing to hear that Coava is committed to long term, sustainable partnerships with coffee producers and in turn, they work directly with coffee farmers. The interesting part was finding out that Coava will still purchase from the farmer even if the farmer has had a bad harvest. This ensures that the coffee farmers always provide the best quality single-origin coffee, regardless of the difficult times they may face. I believe the person giving us a tour mentioned paying more than $3 for a pound of coffee while the standard for single-origin coffee is at about $1.50 per pound. During this tour, we had the Robinson Figueroa, one of Coava's Nitro Cold Brew from Colombia with hints of almond brittle and apple. This was probably one of the best nitro cold brews we've had! We also had the Kilenzo, an Ethiopian coffee that is rich and fruity with hints of lavender and grape jam. The front entrance of Coava opens into a public brew bar, a small cafe where you'll enjoy watching a coffee roastery in motion. We got a tour of the roasting facility and a description of their roasting machines. Apparently, the owner, Matt, is a genius and is both the engineer and designer of these machines. He constructed a density grader machine that separates the heaviest beans from the lighter beans. The denser the coffee bean, the higher the quality. With dry milling, a density separation process is already completed to ensure quality but Coava runs the separation process twice, and in doing so, they separate out the best beans to roast and ensure they sell the highest quality bag around! One of the machines is also able to capture any foreign objects that are found during the roasting process. For instance, we took a picture of rocks found amidst the coffee beans! TIP: This location offers complimentary public coffee cuppings at 1:00pm PST daily. I believe they are closed on Sundays.

a cup of coffee and a croissant
Rachel J.

Came here for a quick bite to eat and latte before heading to the bus station to leave town. I ordered an oat milk latte and an everything bagel croissant that hit the spot. Despite the coffee being smaller than I normally order, the quality made it equally as satisfying and the croissant was perfectly flaky. My friend who also ordered the honey latte and mocha were happy with their order but my friend who ordered the chai was disappointed in its flavors.

Cortado

Coava was recommended to me by a colleague. We drove from Vancouver, Canada, and made Coava one of our coffee stops. It lives up to the hype. The cortado was perfectly malty, got, and the espresso shot did not burn/expire (my pet peeve!). We bought 10 bags of coffee beans (Honduras and Guatemala) to bring back for our friends and family for gifts over the holidays. Our friends were equally impressed

Got a latte with their Ethiopia natural beans and it was lovely, roasty and bright within being acidic. We were debating between beans to take home and they also let us sample the brewed coffee version of the beans to make a decision, which was super nice. The staff was engaging and attentive, the space industrial feeling and clean and the coffee top notch. Definitely on our must stop lost in Portland!

I have probably spent a couple thousand dollars on their business. Not being able to pour my cup of coffee in a to-go cup when leaving is ridiculous and not standard practice. I found this out the hard way when I had ordered a drip coffee for here and, when leaving, the women kinda snapped at me when I kindly asked for an 8oz to-go cup. I'm on their bi weekly coffee subscription. I'm located in Portland and my bag of beans was routed from Portland to Detroit, then San Francisco then back to my home in Portland on my last order. How odd. I tried reaching out to them to figure out what's going on and there is no way of contacting their business. Their website has no contact information and I called multiple times and no one would pick up the phone. I finally found a personal gmail account linked to their business somewhere on their google business profile but no one ever responded to me. I find it to be very odd that they're running an online business, you can't contact them, and they don't have anyone attending customer service. That's very bad practice. If it weren't for how good the coffee is, PushXPull would be dead last on my preferred coffee shop. I'll update my review once these issues are addressed.

We took a last-morning stroll through downtown Portland and, on the walk back to our hotel,…read morerealized we wanted something warm and a short pause. That's how we ended up at Courier Coffee Roasters and it turned out to be the perfect pit stop. The shop itself is small and unassuming, but the moment we walked in it felt inviting and calm. The staff was genuinely wonderful. My partner ordered an Americano and was asked which cup he preferred, two different styles. He asked if they were the same size, and that simple question turned into the most endearing moment. Since the barista didn't know, she checked the bottoms of the cups for size markings (no luck), then filled one with water to see if it would pour evenly into the other, and finally put them on the scale. Verdict: same size. The curiosity and genuine desire to give us a real answer was just lovely. I ordered a hojicha tea, which was very well prepared and hit the spot. My partner said his coffee was smooth and really good. We also grabbed a pear muffin, nicely done, with generous chunks of pear (skin on, which I loved). My partner ordered a chocolate chunk cookie, which disappeared quickly. There was a record player on the counter with a mellow morning album playing, adding to the relaxed feel. The whole space and everyone working there felt warm, friendly, and welcoming. If you live nearby or are visiting like we were, this is a great place to slow down, warm up, and enjoy genuinely good coffee, tea, and hospitality.

My kids were particular fascinated by the working record player at the counter. The staff was super nice and even explained to my kids how the record player worked. I have mixed feelings about my visit this morning. There is so much to love about the vibe here,…read morebut the actual drink execution left me frustrated. The Pros: First off, the staff is incredibly sweet and friendly. They make you feel welcome the second you walk in. The modern, cool design of the space is top tier. It is exactly the kind of atmosphere you want when grabbing a coffee in Portland. I also love their progressive approach to dairy; they default to plant based milks and there is no upcharge for them, which is a huge win for accessibility and sustainability. The Cons: Unfortunately, the experience was completely undercut by the quality of the pour. The oat milk curdled almost immediately. I am well aware that Stumptown uses a more naturally acidic brew, which is a science experiment waiting to happen with plant milks, and I know it is technically safe to drink. However, the separation completely ruins the mouthfeel. Instead of a creamy, cohesive sip, I was left with a watery base and grainy floaties. It is disappointing to be told that this is normal when specialty cafes have the tools like barista grade buffers and temperature control to prevent this. While the ethics and the aesthetic are on point, a drink that looks and feels curdled just is not an acceptable standard to serve to customers. Summary: Great people, great space, great pricing, but the technical execution of the plant based drinks needs a serious overhaul.

There was plenty of seating available inside and outside on their patio. The service was delightful when taking our drink orders. The raspberry danish latte on their seasonal menu sounded scrumptious but the raspberry and the acidity of the coffee tasted a bit too sweet and tart for our liking. The black sesame matcha latte was also met with disappointment; the matcha tasted more like a steeped green tea with no earthy or umami notes. The black sesame helped deepen the flavor profile but I would not order it again. My friend's iced latte was my favorite out of the drinks that I sampled so perhaps I should order one of their classic coffees next time instead.

In a world where all coffee joints more or less run together, it was refreshing to see something that has more of a distinctly local flavor. The building is light and airy with a very large patio, extremely well laid out both on the exterior and interior, with plenty of places to sit and chat, eat, or work. The food menu, Weill, not expensive, offers a little bit of something for everyone. My friend opted for toast with butter and honey and a small hot chocolate made with almond milk. I, having just come from a lunch meeting, just had a large mocha. Placing the order was fast and accurate, and when the drinks were prepared, we were called up to retrieve them. While we were fetching them, a mere feet away, somebody delivered the toast to the table! We were quite surprised by that and a bit delighted. Definitely not expected. Sadly, no pictures of either food or drink this time - the toast evaporated before I had a chance, and to be honest, I find pictures of plain white paper cups pretty boring. Perhaps next time. The location is right on the edge of Ladd's Edition, just south of Hawthorne at the intersection of 12th and Clay. It's a delightful neighborhood, one that I often aspired to live in before I settled in where I am currently. Highly recommended, I'll definitely be back soon
