Went here a couple of times to get some studying done. Staff was nice, accommodating to certain things. I feel like their coffee can be a hit or miss, which I'm not sure if I like that. I always get their egg coffee, pandan coffee, or Milky Way. It is always on the sweeter side for some reason, despite me asking to be less sweet and less ice. They are Despicable their service is absolutely horrendous. They are racist and homophobic and unaccommodating. I've been here multiple times now and consider Ume having one of the best Vietnamese coffees in Portland with my favorite being the egg-cellent. Most recently ventured outside of coffee, tried the taro milk tea and unfortunately do not recommend. Unsure if they use powder but if they do, they did not mix it well enough and my drink was grainy. On top of that, multiple menus said it was $6.25 but I was charged $6.75 (not a big deal so I didn't bring it up to them but something to keep in mind for those that do care). My boyfriend ordered the thai black coffee that had a strong floral taste I was not fond of but he liked. Also at my recent visit, when we were looking at the menu trying to decide on what to order, my boyfriend needed to use the restroom, asked if he needed a code when the worker responded it was for paying customers only. I informed him that I was still looking at the menu trying to decide, which made him hesitate a little before asking me if I was for sure going to order. The owner (I'm assuming) was there, asked what was going on, and seemed to have no problem with my boyfriend using the bathroom. Incredibly disappointed. Please read the 1-2 star reviews and why. I wish I would've seen them. This place could be better if the coffee wasn't filled to the brim with ice and suddenly you are trying to figure out what the hell happened to all of your coffee?!? I was not expecting that at all. I don't mind some ice but when I pay $6.75 for a coffee and I barely took 3 sips of and then suddenly it was gone I can't help but feel like this place is a total burn. Maybe others know to order no ice? If I had known I would have asked for it that way but 3 sips is not a lot when half of that was foam. It actually made me sad because I made it a point to come here after seeing photos that looked so yummy and I will most likely never come back here again. I hope people that do want to try this place out see this review and know to order NO ice or your drink will be empty. Its menu has all kinds of pretty & fun sounding concoctions. The employee was friendly and helpful. Still favoring Matcha, I went with the Matcha-mazing Coffee. I'm limiting my caffeine intake these days so it hit hard. Strong and so good! The shop is cute with a couple tables and a high top window bar sporting wooden seats that mold to your booty. Update - I provided a review via Square and the business owner immediately responded, so I have adjusted my review because of the customer service but still recommend checking on the ice level. Overall - Great location with a shared parking lot, but spots are limited due to 24 Hour Fitness and other nearby businesses. The Ube Coffee tasted more like chocolate milk than Vietnamese coffee. Location - The entrance is right on Halsey, making it easy to find. However, the parking lot can crowded since it's shared with establishments like 24 Hour Fitness. Drinks - We ordered the Ube Coffee with less ice. However, as we drove off, we noticed that about 75% of the cup was still filled with ice. Normally, I'd assume it was a mistake by the person making the drink by not reading the label, which there wasn't one, but in this case, the cashier who took our order also made it. This place has been under my radar for the longest time and I'm glad I finally had the opportunity to visit! Cafe Ume might be one of my new favorite places to enjoy some Vietnamese coffee! The service was very kind, offering me lucky Dragon red envelopes as part of their promotion! The drinks came out at a reasonable pace, we had no complaints about our wait time despite coming in with a larger party. While I had a hard time choosing which flavors to order, I was slightly disappointed that their signature Caramel Popcorn Coffee was out of stock. The ube coffee was done well, the ube foam was subtle yet added a layer of flavor to the coffee, making the drink very creamy and delightful. The egg coffee was one of the better ones I've tried in Portland; the velvety, luscious layer of sweetened egg yolk foam made the drink very smooth and decadent. I did not get to try the matcha coffee but it received my brother's approval! The roast of the coffee beans was quite aromatic and rich, but not as dark of a roast or a strong kick compared to other Vietnamese coffees I've tried. The drinks were made well with strong flavors of coffee and a good amount of sweetness. The most recent time I went to Ume, I was slightly disappointed to not be greeted by the kind and joyful owner but instead two younger women who looked indifferent to being there. During this visit I ordered the Egg-Cellent Coffee with boba, less ice and 50% sweetness. The drink was tasty but overly sweet. The cup was filled to the brim with ice which led me wishing for more after finishing. The boba was semi-hard, which may be attributed to going in one hour before closing. I enjoy the drink flavors but overall consistency could be better! There is a parking structure right next to the shop which makes it easier to find parking, although not if you go during prime time gym goer hours since the garage is shared with 24 Hour Fitness. Being a fan of pandan and ube coffees and also vietnamese coffee in general, I was so excited when I saw this place pop up! I knew I wanted the bac xiu aka a lighter take on cafe phe sua/vietnamese iced coffee and let me tell you, it was the PERFECT little cup. Strong coffee flavor without quite so much of the punch and sugar of condensed milk -- aka exactly what I was going for. My friend had the pandan coffee aka pandan-mania and they definitely did not skimp on the pandan foam AT ALL. She loved her drink and overall we both felt quite caffeinated :P I will say the strange thing for me was ordering a coffee without the foam (aka not a ube or pandan coffee) and getting a cup that was not filled up to the top. It was filled up almost to the to with ample amt of space for any of the foam toppings. I found it a bit odd and will say it was the one downside of this place -- particularly given the prices these days. My friend also tried their pandan cake which she enjoyed so would recommend that too! The interior is bright and cute; there are a few seats inside but probably not the best for giant groups. Parking is fairly easy so definitely an added bonus there. Prices are fair for today's standards and I'm so happy to have an addition to the vietnamese iced coffee cafes in the area. The service was great, a kind man was very kind and patient and answered any questions we had. They were efficient and sweet. The environment seemed happy but a little awkward due to just normal human interaction. Extremely well decorated in my opinion. A little more on the minimalistic side, but still enough not to feel trapped. Also love their stools looking out to the sidewalk. The stools are carved and will fit your butt nicely.
