This was the first stop I made coming into Portland, and was not disappointed! Yay, brownie points for Portland! I have worked in coffee for about 4 years, and consider myself at the least, well-educated in the coffee world. I ordered a hazelnut latte, which was perfect. Not too sweet, and the espresso was slightly smokey and delicious. It was topped with the perfect foam, and a beautifully crafted leaf design. As an added bonus, the baristas were incredibly kind and helpful. The shop itself is well laid out, with plenty of laptop/study space. Will be coming back before I leave the city! read more

Great place to study, read, or hang out with friends. Quality beverages, clean and open space, plenty of seating, and parking isn't bad. Nice decor-- wood everything and minimalist white walls/counter area. I read that it's a nice place to write-- and I can confirm this is true! I came here to write a paper and I'm distracted at the moment (but hey, I'm still WRITING, just a Yelp review at the moment). Tried the lavender cold brew with almond milk-- delicious! I think it is seasonal though. I'll be back to try an almond milk latte sometime. TABLES FOR GIANTS! Just kidding, they're probably for more people with more normal height. Walking into case study is like walking into a lab where they are working to perfect coffee. The plus side they don't appear to be testing on animals, only on happy caffeinated humans. The coffee they serve is just that, coffee (or espresso) without any fancy for rolls or sugary syrups. This means don't expect to get something similar to a Starbucks flavored drink, not that there's anything wrong with those, you just won't get them here. What you will get here is very carefully brewed coffee or espresso drinks. What does carefully brewed mean? I'm glad you asked. At case study they have a brood ready to go house coffee at all times, however if you're not in a hurry you should order yourself Chemex pour over. Each pour over is timed, measured and weighed for the perfect brew. This is also a good place to drink coffee and get some work done. The owners of Case Study Coffee have put their heart and soul into creating a place which is a true celebration of coffee. I've never been a big fan of Stumptown Coffee since it has always has seemed too bitter for my palate. However, after trying a couple of amazing coffees at Case Study, I'm convinced that Stumptown wasn't to blame. Rather, I just never had tried a high-quality, hand-pulled coffee made from Stumptown highlighting its unique floral and chocolate attributes. I'm excited to go to Case Study for one of their regular weekend cupping events to learn how they make such ethereal coffee. The calm, spacious, and well-designed interior of Case Study should be a case study for drab coffee shops throughout PDX. Coffee is the reason why I get out of bed. I take it very seriously. Coffee is my bae. And this is real coffee, not a coffee drink drowning in sweeteners and flavorings and sprinkles. They take their time to steam the milk for each order, which can make the drink take longer to make, but it's the right way to do it and you can tell in the taste and quality. Plus their customer service is pretty great too. There was a long queue on a busy Saturday morning, and this woman took my mocha order thinking it was hers. So i was waiting for my drink for at least 10 minutes before I asked about it and when they realized somebody else had taken it, they made my drink right away and gave me a voucher for a free drink, which I thought was pretty cool. read more

Definitely a bit out of the way from my usual inner SE spots, but a great shop. It's large and spacious. The feel is a bit eclectic, with a large (probably close to 14') table that would fit right in a quiet library reading room, and then a half-dozen or so copper-top tables for two. Along the large store-front windows, there's a counter tops with another half-dozen seats and aluminum Navy chair stools (or maybe knock-offs?). On a Sunday after noon, there were close to a dozen folks in the space, a mix of those catching up and having conversations and those on laptops. The laptop users were mainly around the edges of the room (likely to take advantage of outlets). The counter top along the window gave me the option to work while standing (which is a definite plus for me). While I'd like to think I can make a differentiation between bad and good coffee, I'm not enough of a coffee snob to really differentiate between good and great coffee . . . the cold brew I had hit the spot. read more

Just right. Serving absolutely fantastic coffee, tea and pastries, Case Study is just right. I very much love tea when there is good strong tea to be had, so I'm super happy that they have nicely sized pots of exceptional Foxfire tea. When it comes to coffee I am exceedingly picky and I admit it. I'm not a snooty connoisseur, but I like my coffee to be smooth and strong without being bitter. I've had some of the best coffee of my life at Case Study. The cold brew is very nice too. The staff is very pleasant to deal with but won't chat your ear off with pretend interest. It's a nice balance, like pretty much everything there. It isn't too big or too small, it isn't too loud (like most coffee shops in the area) or too dead, it doesn't have a huge selection of every low quality food stuff in the known universe, it just has a nice little case of really, really good fresh muffins and bagels. It's Just Right. It's Perfect. Case Study does a few things and does them very well. As far as I'm concerned it is simply the most enjoyable coffee shop in a city of pretty darned good coffee shops. Nothing better than a cute, spacious and laptop friendly coffee shop! First off and most importantly---- they offer a bunch of vegan friendly options! I got some sort of berry apple crisp that was so delicious! They have a bunch of milk options as well. The cafe is arranged in a way that provides the most space for lots of people to chat or study and has lots of plugs for your laptop or phones. Free wifi. Not too noisy but not too quiet either. I got a almond milk decaf latte. It was delicious. I love the fact that most everything they offer is made locally. They have art for sale on the walls and treats from surrounding shops. I have lived across the street from this coffee shop for some time now and today I finally walked over there to give it a try. The result? I wish I had come here sooner! I ordered a chai and a coffee cake streudel and they are both amazing! I have never tasted a coffee cake as good as this, and the chai was superb - just the right amount of flavoring. My last stop before concluding my Portland trip. This is one of the best coffees I have ever had! I didn't have anything special, just the coffee of the day, which was Ethiopian. This cafe roasts seasonal coffees and they also have daily specials... I seriously fell in love with this place and was almost sad to leave Portland because of this... but then I cheered myself up, reminding myself that LA also has a lot of great cafes. This is a great coffee shop - delicious coffee done right, a great open space with lots of natural light which is good for either hanging out or studying, and good service. Also, although I usually drink my coffee black, I occasionally love a good 'treat' coffee. The hazelnut latte here is SO good. It tastes like freshly roasted hazelnuts and has a good balance between the flavors of hazelnut and coffee, and isn't too syrupy sweet. I can't imagine someone not liking it. read more

Found this place by accident on the way to the Tin Shed. The wifi wasn't working but life is short. Cool small cute shop with awesome staff with a great sense of humour, We finally got some decent coffee and tea after being on the road for 4 hours. Only downside is the lack of parking. This, however, is not lacking- (from some coffee wiki site): "Caffè latte is a coffee-based drink made primarily from espresso and steamed milk. It consists of one-third espresso, two-thirds heated milk and about 1cm of foam. Depending on the skill of the barista, the foam can be poured in such a way to create a picture. " My $3.50 latte was just as described, and I learned that all the commercial lattes are really Au Laits with all that extra steamed milk and foam. So this was a smallish, but delicious real thang. A great environment for a mid-week wifi escape. Lots of two top tables for quiet typing and def not gluten free pastry woofing. Bathroom large and clean. If you get hungry for some dining variety, only steps away is the Rose City Food Park with a global grouping of carts to meet the hunger pangs of many a varied diner. Friendly staff and a quick barista were the icing on the cake. Loved the big picture windows looking out on Sandy Blvd - overall a great interior feel. read more

Definitely one of my favorite downtown coffee spots, but it's not just the coffee that stands out here. It's CHAI! They have 2 kinds - spicy and sweet. Both are great and appeal to different palettes. I am partial to the spicy. Perfect spot to meet people in the city, or fit in a few hours of work. This review is for the coffee only, my customer service at the store was great. I also tried to reach out directly to have this remedied with no response. So I had not been since before pandemic and the coffee use to be fantastic. Not this time. My two lattes tasted like a watered down steamer. When you over steam the milk it tastes horrible. I noticed how hot the real milk one was (I was unable to even carry from stand to get a sleeve for it.) so I asked him to not steam the soy so hot which it pretty much still was. Soy milk continues to heat up after you steam it and it breaks the soy . If I go to a coffee stand I politely ask for it not too hot - which I don't at well established coffee shops because I feel their baristas are more trained. I don't want it cold just not scalding, If I wanted burnt milk I'd go to Starbucks. I wasted 15 dollars that morning as we threw them away. I also wish managers would have returned my phone call as most yelp complaints this probably could have been remedied. read more

Case Study Coffe helps me survive my daily grind. They are great for a coffee, conversation and have a delicious selection of quality food items. The decor and atmosphere makes me want to hang out all day, but I usually only have time to grab and go. The staff seems to be a mix of friendly, sweet, shy but competent, and sassy depending on who is working. For those complaining about the service and snobbery - Yes, there is some occasional sass and minor snobbery now and then, but it's a coffee shop (and there are human beings that work there) - that's practically in the job description of a barista - at least in my experiences in Portland, DC, and SLC It's a beautiful thing for people to care about what they are crafting and the folks at Case Study are doing a great job. read more

When visiting a cafe for the first time, I usually order just coffee under the belief that if a place can't do a good straightforward cup of joe, why bother otherwise? But we visited on a very hot day and the fact they make their own syrups was enticing to me. I was so excited to see the sign for Case Study Coffee moving in to NE. As a marketing/communications gal I loved the look and feel of the logo and design, but when I walked in, I felt like FINALLY someone really thought out every single detail of a retail space. The space is just beautiful and light, and the OCD person in me loved that everything had a place and made sense. Sounds strange, but I appreciated the care put into every detail. Even the custom espresso maker is a work of art! The coffee is superb, made with care, and the pastries from Crema are delightful (banana chocolate bundt cake and manchego mushroom are two of the best pastries I've ever had!) and the staff is friendly and unassuming. I love Case Study. A comfortable space, great coffee, good people working there and sharing the space with you. It's a lovely little haven right down the street. And I while I give them five stars, there is a minor issue for me... they changed out the pastry selection, and now every time I go there for breakfast, I look in the case and can't find anything to eat but the pumpkin zucchini muffin, and that's not exactly my favorite. I'd more like a cinnamon roll, doughnut, or bun of some sort, and those are apparently just not popular anymore. Usually there are plenty of things in the case that in general look like they would be good, but I won't eat just anything for breakfast, so now I have to drive the extra 20 blocks or so to go to Crema. I am bummed to see yet another coffee shop drop off of my breakfast radar by changing out their selection of things to eat, but they are an excellent coffee shop run well by friendly people who care. The coffee is basically magical. The vanilla late, my drink of choice, has a perfect balance and isn't too sweet. The review should be 5 stars just on the coffee. The shop feels very open, and has a lot of light. There are plenty of outlets to accommodate the crowd of people working and studying. The noise level is usualy quiet enough to talk over too. The downsides depend on the day. Sometimes the staff isn't very friendly, to the point of being downright offputting. And even on days where the staff is pleasant, they often pay more attention to their coworkers than their customers.
