The owner of the house where we stayed at recommended this coffee place to us so we tried it out. The ambiance is ok, not like your typical coffee shop with armchairs and/or sofas where you can just sit back and relax. They have long tables and steel bistro dining chairs; but don't get me wrong, the place looks rustic and nice. This is the first coffee place i didn't put sugar in my cappuccino because the taste was already good. Came here for the first time to meet a friend and arrived a touch early - so fun to people watch and see customers repeatedly visit the counter to refill their drinks. It appears that some like it so much they stay for hours and I could see why; the ambiance is great for solo activities (like reading or working), social engagements and, most definitely, Portland people watching. This is a great space on a busy street--a little refuge, like so many coffee shops aspire to be. They're doing a great job at it, too, and everyone seems to know. We checked it out around 10 on a Sunday morning, and we were lucky to find seats. It's an older space, with big windows that go nearly floor to ceiling. There are long communal tables and some other mixed seating. Coffee and tea bar off to the left, full lineup, and a decent-sized pastry case with bagels, sweets, and so on. The staff here are very friendly and sweet (and caffeinated to a higher power, which should not surprise anyone). Prices are fair--I want to say I paid $3 for a bagel and an iced tea. My buddy A got some sort of prepared coffee (I'm terrible with the names) and they put pretty little hearts and things in the foam. Making fun of the bald, goateed dudes in Seahawks gear? Perhaps. Smelled really good, though. And he's getting married in a couple weeks, so coffee with hearts in the foam is probably the right drink for the morning after his bachelor party. I'd have to give the parking here one star at the most, but it's close enough to town that there's no room to grumble about that. Dig this place and will happily come back. read more

I knew I was going to require fortification before we began checking out hybrids at the dealerships on Canyon Rd. in Beaverton. And hoping not to have to settle for Starbucks, as we were cruising down Sandy, we stopped here after seeing Case Study's sandwich board sign on the sidewalk. As we approached the entrance, I was reassured to see a Stumptown Beans sign in the window. I liked the vibe in this high-ceiling airy coffee shop. After hitting up Pitch Dark next door, we needed somewhere to duck out of the rain, sit for a bit and plan our next move. Case Study fit the bill perfectly. It had that coffee house feel one would expect to find in PDX. I went with the White Chocolate Ganache Latte and my husband ordered the Cascara (coffee cherry) tea. My latte was delicious and truly made with a chunk of ganache rather than some super processed syrup. I watched as the barista lovingly made sure the ganache melted into the espresso. Great little shop on Sandy Blvd and will definitely have them on our list if/when we are back in Portland. read more

I desperately needed a study area that wasn't dead quiet and the only study cafe I know of is out of the way. My friends recommended cafe study. I always feel awkward propping down in a cafe where people are just stopping in for coffee. I did not feel that way at all here. There were plenty of people just on their laptops working away. I've set out in search of the best coffee shop in Portland. What the best means is certainly subjective; however, the flavor of the coffee is paramount in my search. Case Study Coffee has a rich bold flavor of its Stumptown genesis. The roast I sampled today has the Sumatra after glow. While not my favorite Stumptown roast, my barista served it with gratitude and grace. Customer service is second most important in my search as the love poured in will come out in the flavors I taste. I give Case Study Coffee on NE Sandy 3.75 out of 5--very good coffee shop with free wifi. 5-Stars for a rustic coffee-tea shop in Portland. My friend and I were in the are looking for gluten free options. The place we initially found was closed and just happened to stumble across this gem. They had gluten free baked goods from a local gf Baker +1. The coffee-tea menu was robust and fun +1. The baristas were adorable, attentive and when they asked me what I was thinking about getting and I said hang on I'm reading every bit of these descriptions, they said oh yes, by all means read. They were serious and liked the fact that I was enjoying the read. Impressive+1. the bagel(not gf) I ordered was crispy on the outside, just the right chewiness right on the inside and ultra fresh +1. The chai +1 was a unique blend of traditional chai flavors they made me crave a second serving - I didn't want to leave. I know this is a coffee shop but I didn't want coffee, they roast their own beans here! I just wasn't in the mood. Usually coffee shops don't do tea very well and he shops definitely don't do coffee very well. However this coffee shop did my chai better than anyone else, ever! Good coffee, nice people, easygoing atmosphere, GREAT pastries. They roast their own and carry some other brands to round out the selection. I find their Guatemalan, for instance, to be very good with some very nice spicy notes, but not quite be as rich and perfectly roasted as Spella, (a very high artisanal standard to be sure), so 4 stars. They offer all the usual suspects, lattes and espresso drinks to affogatos and shakeratos, but they also offer vacuum brewed by the cup and their rotating house French press is usually quite good ($2/cup). Their barristas have seemed consistently friendly and properly skilled. What makes this a perfect stop for breakfast though is the lovely selection of Nuvrei and Bakeshop goodies, as well as bagels and toppings. Yummy! read more

I ordered one of their special drinks, a Burnt Caramel Latte. This has to be one of the BEST coffee drinks I have had, ever. I was worried it might be one of those overly-sweet, cloying drinks, but it was NOT that at all. Just the right amount of sweetness. I really like this cafe! First of all, the staff are all really friendly and welcoming. Second, the atmosphere is very natural and has a nice feel to it. I came here to study, and the wifi is free without a password. I had a salt bagel that was perfectly salty and only $2. The bathroom also has no code, which I'm not sure if anyone else cares, but I do LOL. Finally there is ample seating here, which is a major plus! Warm lighting and dark marble service counters keep things subdues with copper-covered tables to work at. A timeworn floor and small speakers add the right tone and background feel. Typical coffee shop menu is simple and inexpensive. Quick service is a clear indicator of the skills behind the bar, and the overall cleanliness speaks of attention to detail. The folks behind the counter are very nice, smiling and chatting and genuinely having a good time. There are a few outlets sprinkled around the room, but you should probably have your batteries charged if you plan on working here. If not, you'll find yourself watching the traffic on Sandy through the large front windows, which is enjoyable in itself. Solid 4 stars, my new neighborhood shop. read more

The coffee is stunning. My husband thought their coffee was way too expensive and he refuses to go there. I told him that they source the coffee from small family farms, they take great pains to roast each batch in just the right way. He still refused to believe me. Then I sent him one day to buy a gallon of coffee for a meeting At my studio, and they set me up with a gallon of their hot beautiful brew, and he got a free cup of coffee out of the deal. I understand being a coffee lover and being well cultured in the coffee world, but nothing compares to the asshole with the beard behind the counter who was "too cool" to make my coffee because I wanted a vanilla cafe au lait. I recently returned from my trip to France and heard that this was the place to go, asked for a vanilla flavored cafe au lait and got told they "don't make that" .....literally coffee with milk and vanilla flavoring.... Srsly.... Ok..... Also, place was loud as shit and there was no place to sit because every table was packed with people on their MacBooks. One woman had TWO tables to HERSELF with FOUR CHAIRS and was sprawled out all over the place. Case Study is one of my favorite coffee joints to set up camp and get some work done. I love the large space and ample seating. There's even a table that can accommodate up to 14 people! Power outlets are in abundance here, so you won't have to worry about powering down after an hour or two. I think most of the beans are from Stumptown, though I've seen a couple different logos behind the counter. Barista's are extremely friendly and laid back. No sass! Just hospitable service and lots of smiles. You can even stop by the bakery next door and bring your treat into Case Study to enjoy with your coffee. read more

Nice, low-key, quality coffee shop. The drink I ordered was hand pulled, no button-pushing baristabots here. Perfect mocha - no sissy whipped cream offered, not all chocolate syrupy. Just a nice, rich blend with lovely foam on top. They also have a limited pastry selection - the slice of banana-chocolate chip coffee cake was so big and rich I couldn't finish it. It off limits and the music isn't so irrational loud that focus on work is lost. It has the feel of the perfect cafe with plenty of table space and plug ins for all. I was with some people who wanted coffee, but not Starbucks. We were on Sandy past 110th and all I could find were drive up coffee huts, so one of my passengers found this place on Yelp and 50 blocks later we arrived. They ended up first buying local made chocolate in the shop next to the coffee shop. I like a good cup of coffee, but this trip a bit over the top. We had six people and there was a guy on his computer in the middle of a giant table, he avoided eye contact, so we couldn't sit there. The fellow working there moved a couple of small tables to accommodate us which was great. If I were that guy hogging the table, I would have moved over a couple of seats for 15 minutes, but no this is Portland, the land of the inconsiderate and entitled. (Sorry, but consideration for others is about as low as it gets here. People act like you shouldn't exist or smile or god forbid ask a question.) The coffee was good, but coffee has two conditions for me; it's either bad or good. I don't want to learn a new vocabulary to enjoy a cup of coffee. The place fits its name. It's a study hall for people who think they are in a big public library. The coffee was good and my visitor's were happy. If you live nearby, bring your computer and hog a table for six with an empty cup you finished three hours ago. It' a feeling of power that you just can't get anywhere else for $3.95.
