Had a dinner date here while in town - very intimate yet casual environment. Located in downtown Angels Camp so not hard to find. Plenty of free street parking. There were wait and kitchen staff being trained the night we dined it so our food took longer than usual, but no big deal. Growing pains of a small business so some patience goes a long way. Anyway, we had complimentary chips and salad and iced waters brought to our table shortly after being seated. For our entrees, we chose the Chicken Enchiladas and Steak Fajitas which came with a side of rice and tortillas. Dinner was filling and not too bad in taste considering the chef(s) were still in training and becoming accustomed to the menu. Nice place for authentic Mexican. We had veggie fajitas with corn tortillas that were advertised as home made, and wow did they taste that way. We were there on a November Tuesday late afternoon, so not busy -- but we could tell that service was always attentive and quick as could be. read more

Nice server, we came in close to the closing time but was served nicely. Food was delicious although I like a spicier salsa with my chips. Margarita was yummy for not having any tequila, only a wine cooler. We payed around 40$ for chile verde (17$) and rice and beans (6$) with two margaritas (8$ each). With 10% discount though. I'm literally still in the restaurant writing this review because for once, I'm dining alone. So friendly from the moment you walk in the door. Chips & salsa immediately delivered to my table. They have a few drink options, I can't do margaritas, but they had Merlot, so good for me. I ordered the birria which comes like a stew to your table, corn or flour tortillas. Delicious!! I could drink this, lol. So flavorful. When I ran out of tortillas, I dipped my chips in the sauce. The restaurant is upstairs/downstairs, quiet, but it is a Monday so pretty much expected. That night for dinner we were shocked. White rice, (not Spanish) beans, and 2 enchiladas that had canned enchilada sauce, cheddar cheese, and mine had 2 bay leaves in one. Tasted horrible! On a road trip with my BFF, and this small restaurant was recommended. We ended up going there two nights. The first night, my friend got the Quesobirria, which I tried, and of my God, delish! Fried Birria Tacos with Au jus made from the beef drippings. Outstanding. I got the Chicken Crispy Tacos, and they were very good. The second time, my BFF got the Chicken Mole and raved about it. I got the Chicken Enchiladas with green sauce and they were great. The beans were good, but the rice was white. Very unusual in a Mexican restaurant. My wife and I went on vacation to Angels Camp California. We had never been there, or even heard about the area. On April 27th while adventuring around we came across Cascabel. Walking inside I really liked the design of the place. It was simple, yet elegant. The waitress sat us right away. I wish I remembered her name. I have since lost my copy of the receipt but she was very friendly. When I opened the menu my eyes went right away to the Birria tacos. That's what they saw first and I knew that's what I was going to order. I have been obsessed with Birria since the first time I tried it. My wife ordered shredded beef enchiladas with beans and rice. Before our entrees came to the table we received our potato dippers. They aren't much to look at when they first arrive. Basically two potato burritos with a cheesy chorizo dip. That first bite was incredible. I actually wasn't ready for them to be that good. They quickly disappeared from sight. Now time for the main event! My Birria tacos. I don't know just where to begin. There are so many aspects to go over. From the obviously handmade tortillas to the gooey melted cheese and finally the flavorful tender meat. Everything was made complete by the dish of consume that came with it. Ps. Since my wife couldn't finish her beans and rice I did. Cascabel is just a total kick butt place to relish Latin based food. You will never find a better salsa and chip to savor over before your meal arrives. Today the Great Gal and I shared an incredible Chile Relleno and Nochos feast. Plenty to eat with enchanting Cumbia music in the background and Lexie, very graciously and personality galore, serving our table. We could not have asked for a better lunch experience. I'd give 6 stars if I could, I travel all over CA for work 6 days a week so I've had a LOT of great authentic Mexican food. Believe me when I say, I had THE BEST Quesabirria tacos I've had in years. Not only is their food amazing, and they have beer on tap, but this place is also family owned. Jessica and Arianna provided fantastic service, very personable and cool to talk to. They were attentive to my table making sure I had everything I needed when I needed it. They are very appreciative for feedback, which I gave them a lot of great feedback on everything about this restaurant. The restaurant is clean, very well kept and feels luxurious and comfortable. I will be definitely coming back every single time I'm near Angels Camp, I'd go at least an hour out of my way to have their food and see these amazing people again. I give this place a firm "meh". In general, the food was overpriced for portion sizing and the table presentation was more taqueria style rather than sit-down, wait service which is what they are going for. The food was just OK. The hot sauce here (special request) is great. It was the shining star of the experience. The chips and salsa were really good. Two of the things that we tried to order (from the menu), the server had to get with the kitchen and in both cases informed us that the item was not available that day (a Saturday, lunchtime). My dining companion ordered a meal that was $15 and it came out so small that I wouldn't have expected it to even cost $10. I was hoping to find otherwise on the check when it came, but nope...$15. Not even rice or beans were given as a side. At least it was on a plate. I had the chile relleno burrito. I generally love chile rellenos as an entree so I decided to try it as a burrito. The presentation was in a plastic basket. I expected it on a plate and at least with some sauce on it. Nope. Dry. Without the house hot sauce, this would have been a bland burrito. Even so, I struggled to find the chile relleno in the burrito. It was mostly rice. I think I saw some green bits in there occasionally. I expected large pieces or a whole chile in there as well as lots of cheese (as is normal for a relleno entree). I didn't find much of either. read more

A local took me to Cascabel and it was so delicious, I asked if they would be interested in hosting me and my 20-person film crew on a Friday night - with the caveat it would be LATE. They happily agreed to stay after hours and create a taco bar so everyone could make their meal just how they wanted it. Everyone told me they were really happy with their food and that's not always easy to pull off with such a big group. I can't thank you enough. Quesabirria tacos were wonderful. Also, don't skip the deep-fried avocados (a light tempura-like batter) and the chorizo queso.

One star was for the clean restroom and one star is for our kind waitress. I ordered chicken fajitas and they gave me beef fajitas. I told them it was ok and that I would take them. When order was brought to me the food was inedible! The beef was a weird color and was full of fat. My husbands tacos were a complete mess. I honestly hate sending food back and complaining but this was a complete mess. We will not be returning to this establishment. read more

Too bad they didn't offer combination plates. Really saw these available in my youth in Mexican establishments. All the food seemed not only tasty but eye appealing. I stoped here driving out of South Tahoe on a whim and now I think it's a go to when in the area. The food was fresh, hot and good. The service was excellent and the bathroom was clean. Very old feeling restaurant, but you're in Angels camp so what do you expect. Service was friendly enough, nothing to brag about. But the food, delicious! They got really busy after we sat down but the food was served quickly. Our group tried the Chile relleno, Birria tacos, chicken enchiladas, carne asada tacos, and chicken mole burrito. Chips and salsa were served while we waited, when we asked for more they brought some quick, but later we found out they charged us extra, so beware of that. But the rest of the food was really good. Chile relleno was delicious and the creamy potatoes it came with were awesome, the highlight at the table. The only thing we didn't really care for was the chicken mole burrito, felt like they just threw in a huge piece of rotisserie chicken. Decent spot when in this area. read more

Very unique Mexican Cuisine. The deep fried avocado appetizer was quite interesting. I think I had the best carnitas I have ever had in a restaurant here. Generous amount and very well done. I decided to make a day of the craft fair at Frogtown, and so before the movie ticket I had booked I was looking for lunch! Cascabel really delivered! I enjoyed the pozole, great complex broth and meat - not that cold a day but it really hit the spot. I had a very nice glass of white wine, with a generous pour, and then I needed some desert. The flan was made in house and very smooth and hit the spot. I'll be back to try the Quesabirria Tacos! Great service, great food! We are all really shocked about how bad this Mexican food was. There were six of us there this evening and none of the food was edible. We were surprised over and over again about how bland everything was. The chips were fresh but there was no salt on them. The salsa was tasteless. The rice tasted like musty socks. The beans were pale, pale tan, almost white. We had to send the fajitas back, because they were not sizzling and the meat tasted old like there was something dangerous. We had to keep asking for fresh water and service. The waitress was pretty rude and did not seem to want to be there. The quesadilla was made with mozzarella cheese. The burger did not have the aioli it was supposed to, onion, or jalapeños it was supposed to have. Plus she asked for sweet potatoes and they gave her regular. We were in town to visit Yosemite and wanted Mexican food. Their chips and salsa were amazing. The salsa had great flavor and the chips were light and crispy. We actually asked for more. The food did take an inordinate amount of time to come out even though our server commented that it was a slow Monday night. They were out of the quesabirria, which was a disappointment to my husband. He opted for chicken enchiladas and I had carnitas enchiladas. We both got red and green sauce on top. I liked the corn tortillas for the enchiladas as they're usually flour ones. They were really good. I didn't like the sour cream drizzle on top. I would have preferred a dollop so I could take bites without sour cream. One of my daughters ordered steak tacos. They are small street taco size. There was plenty of meat and a heavy sprinkle of cilantro. She enjoyed them. My other daughter had the huarache. She said it was good, although very heavy on the beans. All our meals, except the huarache came with rice and beans. The rice was weird. It wasn't soy sauce like another review mentioned. The rice wasn't light and fluffy. It was heavy and seemed like it sat out or under a warmer too long. There was nothing special to it. The refried beans tasted good, although they were very thick and dense. I know this is weird but the water was really good. It was so refreshing. I always find it interesting when there are no Latinx working in a restaurant serving Latin American food and that was the case here. I hope the manager looks to add some diversity to the staff. It will likely improve things like the rice. Overall a good place that hit the spot. read more
