After living in the area for two years, I never ate here but drove by it all the time. Tonight I decided to give it a try. Walking in the place had a great vibe with some upbeat Latin hits playing on Pandora. The chips and salsa were ok, nothing special but decent. However to meal was very good as was the service. We ordered a tamale, enchilada, burrito and chile relleno to try the various flavors. The Chile Relleno was tasty. Huge poblano pepper, nice red sauce and the breading was a light spongy texture that has the right amount of thickness without being overly breaded. The tamale and enchilada, both chicken with verde sauce was excellent. The tamale was very moist unlike many that are dry. The tamale held together when cut rather than falling apart but that is just a personal preference as to how you like your tamale. The burrito was very large and extremely tasty as we ordered the super burrito. One of the tastier burritos I had in the area. The highlight was the flan. That was how you say "fire" or as I say SCINTILLATING! Nice thick custard consistency, not gritty and a perfect caramel color and sauce. I could eat this all night with coffee. All in all I can see why Angels got Best of the Best awards many years in a row. I'll be back for the fajitas and a few other tasty sounding dishes. 4.5 stars read more

This hidden little restaurant tucked away at the side of the road serves up some authentic mexican food!! I really enjoyed my combo plate of a pork tamal with a cheese enchilada. I asked for the sauces they put on top to be on the side. The pork inside the tamal was plentiful with just enough seasoning and masa shell. The cheese enchilada was good too and I appreciated the dollop of tasty guacamole/sour cream on top. I used a little of it as a dip for the tortilla chips that are served before the entrees. The refried beans were not salty and perfect with the fluffy, flavorful mexican rice. My friend stated her carne asada tostada bowl was delicious! Sitting inside here is like sitting in a large dining room in someone's cozy home. I only wish they would play some spanish guitar music in the background. Our server was a nice, younger gal who took care of us well. There's also seating outside but it's not warm enough weather yet for that. Had lunch here on our way home from our annual visit to Big Trees State Park to view dogwood blossoms. Lunch was great. Actually lunch and dinner the next day was great since they give you so much food in their combination plates. I had the chile relleno (skip the red sauce) and a side of freshly made guacamole with chips. My husband had the combination plate (shredded beef taco and chicken tamale). Tasted like old school authentic Mexican food (at least what we think of as authentic). The rice was delicious, refried beans on point, but best of all the taco and tamale. Both delicious! My relleno was so good I kept thinking I should've ordered two, but there's always next time. The guacamole was freshly made (a bit too much lime for my taste, but I still managed to eat it all the following day). The restaurant was small and clean. Service was fine. There is more parking in back. Our waitress was quick getting our drinks and order. She recommended the Gonzo tacos. My husband ordered the Enchiladas Poblanas. They have a nice back deck that allows dogs. For $10.95 we had the Gonzo's Tacos Two fried tacos filled with a mix of carne asada, chorizo, melted cheese & our delicious spicy hot red diabla sauce. I really liked them but they are spicy lingering on your tongue. I liked the enchilada but my husband thought the creamy green sauce was too rich $14.95. I thought the prices are good too. Every day should be taco day! When friends say, let's go have a fun extended weekend away, it's my moral imperative to pack an overnight bag and just do it! Our first stop, was an angel's Mexican kitchen. The restaurant had a funky odor to it that did not smell like food, but that did not distract us from ordering and enjoying our meals. Chips, salsa, and ice water were immediately brought to the table for us to enjoy while we perused the menu. We all ordered some variation of different taco dishes. I ordered Gonzo's tacos with no produce. The tacos were filled with a generous amount of beef and chorizo, and the key to making this extra delicious, was the generous amount of cheese that was at both the bottom portion of the tacos, as well as on top of the meat. Perfection in every bite. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and the taco shells were lightly crisp. So, so delicious! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and checked on us a number of times to make sure that we were enjoying our meal, and to ask if we needed anything. The food I enjoyed the most was the rice, salsa, and cheese inside the chili Relleno. The beans tasted as they've been refried a little too long. The Chile Relleno tasted like flour and the enchilada sauce tasted bland. Once we got our food, we had to wait another five minutes when she became available because she had forgot to give us silverware. I had my five-year-old son with me, who typically eats off my plate, so I requested an extra plate. If she would've mentioned there was an extra two dollar charge, I would have just had him eat the rice from my plate or would've bought him his own rice plate. read more

But the women, especially the older Mexican woman who hosts and perhaps owns the restaurant, are SO MISERABLE that it makes it impossible to enjoy the food, as good and fresh as it is. If I could give any advice to this establishment, please FIRE hire immediately and get someone who isn't miserable as a cold rat. If she's the owner, SELL the business. You are doing a tremendous disservice to your kitchen staff and chef for how good their food is. The food here is delicious but the service here is suspect. I really enjoyed their Chille Relleno and their Chimi-Cheesecake and Ice Cream. For most of the meal we were the only ones there. The food took a long time to get to us which could be because they do take pride in their cooking. This could've been overlooked but the service was so bad. Our main waitress was pretty short with us and even rolled her eyes at us. After a day of hiking at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, we decided to have an early dinner in Angel.s Camp on our way back to the Bay Area. Angels was quiet when we arrived around 5 pm and quickly filled up! Lots of people waiting for tables on our way out! Cute little restaurant! Service was efficient. My husband ordered the Carnitas meal which came with rice and beans. The pork was cooked with grilled jalapeños and onions and was delicious. I ordered 2 different items from the Ala Carte menu. I had a shrimp taco which included small shrimp sautéed with jalapeños and onions and tomato. It was served with a slice of lime and sliced avocado on a corn tortilla. I also ordered Chicken Sopes, which were served with a very good salsa verde. The fried masa was outstanding. The sopes were topped with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream as well as queso fresca. The chips and salsa were very good and I enjoyed a large fresh horchata. We will be back if we travel to the Sierras again! read more

My family and I really liked the flavors here -- the eggs were flavorful and the tortilla chips held up to all the very tasty salsa verde. The Horchata comes in a giant mug, the corn chips were nice and thin and perfectly salty, and the back patio offers a good amount of shade.
