After living in the area for two years, I never ate here but drove by it all the time. Tonight I decided to give it a try. Walking in the place had a great vibe with some upbeat Latin hits playing on Pandora. The chips and salsa were ok, nothing special but decent. However to meal was very good as was the service. We ordered a tamale, enchilada, burrito and chile relleno to try the various flavors. The Chile Relleno was tasty. Huge poblano pepper, nice red sauce and the breading was a light spongy texture that has the right amount of thickness without being overly breaded. The tamale and enchilada, both chicken with verde sauce was excellent. The tamale was very moist unlike many that are dry. The tamale held together when cut rather than falling apart but that is just a personal preference as to how you like your tamale. The burrito was very large and extremely tasty as we ordered the super burrito. One of the tastier burritos I had in the area. The highlight was the flan. That was how you say "fire" or as I say SCINTILLATING! Nice thick custard consistency, not gritty and a perfect caramel color and sauce. I could eat this all night with coffee. All in all I can see why Angels got Best of the Best awards many years in a row. I'll be back for the fajitas and a few other tasty sounding dishes. 4.5 stars read more

The service was friendly and we were treated well. The food was good to. It was nice that the place had parking up front and the business is adjacent to a major roadway. We walked in and were immediately seated. We took our time to decide on what to order and wasn't even rushed. The food came out fairly soon after the order. read more

Food was excellent in a traditional restaurant setting. They were under staffed, but our waitress did a great job considering they really could have used another waitress/waiter. We'll be back again. read more

They have good and fast customer service. The free chips and salsa are always appreciated. I ordered the breakfast chilaquiles with carne asada and sunny side up eggs. The presentation of the dish was beautiful. Delicious meal, not spicy. The place was pleasant, low music so you're able to enjoy a conversation with your meal. read more

Good food , friendly people love the tostada , every time. We go to Angels camp we like to eat there

Amazing! From the crispy chips and slightly spicy salsa (free and all you can eat, which is getting pretty rare these days...) to the entrees, everything was delicious. Generous portions and so tasty! And such a friendly family business. Loved every bit of our experience and highly recommend it if you love Mexican food. Or just good food in general. read more

We're from Southern California and have a lot of great Mexican food in our area, so we were expecting comparable quality. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. We went in for lunch around 1:30 (not busy at all) and ordered off of the a la carte menu, as we don't eat a lot of beans and rice. My husband ordered an enchilada with green sauce and a crunchy taco, I ordered a crunchy taco and a tostada. He received a red sauce enchilada and the rest as we had ordered , as did I. Waitress came around to see how everything was tasting AFTER we finished our meal . The taco shells seemed like the premade shells I can buy in the store, or something I could get at Taco Bell. For a $4.50 taco, it wasn't fixed the way I was expecting at all (very bland), and the shells detracted from the overall taste and enjoyment of the tacos. The rest was okay, but overall disappointing, especially for the prices charged. Even the salsa was a disappointment-too tomato saucey and not enough flavor of any kind. The lack of service, no drink refills and the wrong item being brought out, which we couldn't even try to exchange because of being ghosted by the staff was exceptionally frustrating. Overall, very disappointing and one place we will NOT return to when we're back in the area. read more

This hidden little restaurant tucked away at the side of the road serves up some authentic mexican food!! I really enjoyed my combo plate of a pork tamal with a cheese enchilada. I asked for the sauces they put on top to be on the side. The pork inside the tamal was plentiful with just enough seasoning and masa shell. The cheese enchilada was good too and I appreciated the dollop of tasty guacamole/sour cream on top. I used a little of it as a dip for the tortilla chips that are served before the entrees. The refried beans were not salty and perfect with the fluffy, flavorful mexican rice. My friend stated her carne asada tostada bowl was delicious! Sitting inside here is like sitting in a large dining room in someone's cozy home. I only wish they would play some spanish guitar music in the background. Our server was a nice, younger gal who took care of us well. There's also seating outside but it's not warm enough weather yet for that. Take a nice Sunday drive out from the Valley to this place! read more

Had lunch here on our way home from our annual visit to Big Trees State Park to view dogwood blossoms. Lunch was great. Actually lunch and dinner the next day was great since they give you so much food in their combination plates. I had the chile relleno (skip the red sauce) and a side of freshly made guacamole with chips. My husband had the combination plate (shredded beef taco and chicken tamale). Tasted like old school authentic Mexican food (at least what we think of as authentic). The rice was delicious, refried beans on point, but best of all the taco and tamale. Both delicious! My relleno was so good I kept thinking I should've ordered two, but there's always next time. The guacamole was freshly made (a bit too much lime for my taste, but I still managed to eat it all the following day). The restaurant was small and clean. Service was fine. We recommend this place if you're looking for a nice and casual lunch/dinner spot. read more

There is more parking in back. Our waitress was quick getting our drinks and order. She recommended the Gonzo tacos. My husband ordered the Enchiladas Poblanas. They have a nice back deck that allows dogs. For $10.95 we had the Gonzo's Tacos Two fried tacos filled with a mix of carne asada, chorizo, melted cheese & our delicious spicy hot red diabla sauce. I really liked them but they are spicy lingering on your tongue. I liked the enchilada but my husband thought the creamy green sauce was too rich $14.95. I thought the prices are good too. Our Mexican restaurant's in the bay area is average about $17 a dish now. This is a good stop if you have dogs on the way up to Big Trees. read more

A very good restaurant with authentic Mexican flavor, just like being in Mexico. Because of my work I travel a lot and eat at different restaurants, and this is one that I wholeheartedly recommend to those who want to try the authentic taste of Mexico. This spot is right on our way home from spending a day on the lake. First visit went smooth, food was delicious. Came back the next weekend and my son found a screw in his burrito! Not a little tiny one, no a full on big screw. How did that end up in there and how was it missed? Our server was extremely apologetic about it, but our appetites were ruined. Would not come back here. read more

Muy Autentico! Having grown up in Ensenada half-time, for 17 years, I grew to know and love authentic Mexican food. Angel's Mexican Restaurant is the most authentic Mexican cooking I have had in decades. Everything is made fresh, with quality ingredients, cooked to order, using authentic recipes. They specialize in rich, truly Mexican flavors, without the heat. But if you want the heat, just tell them, they are happy to oblige. Their dishes are flavorful, rich, and comforting. Their Enchiladas Poblanos are bathed in a fragrant, lucious, yet mild chile cream sauce. And their Mole Rojo sauce is beautifully-balanced between the mole and red sauce. It is luxurious and deeply warming. Not too sweet, not too hot, lovely! Their Chilaquilles are simpy the best I've ever had. Generous portions, chips cooked to perfection, in their mild but flavorful red sauce. And their prices are very reasonable. You must give them a try! read more

A solid place all around. Nice fresh food with authentic flavors, good service, nice people

Every day should be taco day! When friends say, let's go have a fun extended weekend away, it's my moral imperative to pack an overnight bag and just do it! Our first stop, was an angel's Mexican kitchen. The restaurant had a funky odor to it that did not smell like food, but that did not distract us from ordering and enjoying our meals. Chips, salsa, and ice water were immediately brought to the table for us to enjoy while we perused the menu. We all ordered some variation of different taco dishes. I ordered Gonzo's tacos with no produce. The tacos were filled with a generous amount of beef and chorizo, and the key to making this extra delicious, was the generous amount of cheese that was at both the bottom portion of the tacos, as well as on top of the meat. Perfection in every bite. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and the taco shells were lightly crisp. So, so delicious! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and checked on us a number of times to make sure that we were enjoying our meal, and to ask if we needed anything. This is definitely a great place to stop when you're in Angels Camp, and are Jonesing for a good taco or two! read more

Great service! We requested patio seating in the back bc of our two dogs and the server even brought us a water bowl for them! Food was 7/10 we all ordered street tacos. I stopped because I was craving Mexican food. It is a little spot off the main highway and figured I would try it out because of the reviews. The food was just OK. The food I enjoyed the most was the rice, salsa, and cheese inside the chili Relleno. The beans tasted as they've been refried a little too long. The Chile Relleno tasted like flour and the enchilada sauce tasted bland. Once we got our food, we had to wait another five minutes when she became available because she had forgot to give us silverware. I had my five-year-old son with me, who typically eats off my plate, so I requested an extra plate. If she would've mentioned there was an extra two dollar charge, I would have just had him eat the rice from my plate or would've bought him his own rice plate. read more

This place is really good. I felt like i ate good Mexican food after so long. I give them 5 stars for their food and service. We tried veggie enchilada and wet burrito. I chose less cheese on my enchilada with both green and red sauceand it turned out perfect as I wanted. The wet burrito was little on heavy side no doubt, as expected. On my way to Arnold, I think it's a perfect spot for Mexican food. read more

Always love this family-owned Mexican restaurant in Angels Camp. There aren't many go-to spots in that city but this is one of them!

The food here is AMAZING. The chef deserves ALL the praise. But the women, especially the older Mexican woman who hosts and perhaps owns the restaurant, are SO MISERABLE that it makes it impossible to enjoy the food, as good and fresh as it is. If I could give any advice to this establishment, please FIRE hire immediately and get someone who isn't miserable as a cold rat. If she's the owner, SELL the business. You are doing a tremendous disservice to your kitchen staff and chef for how good their food is. I wish I could go here all the time, but the host / owner is such a miserable twat that it makes me never want to go and spend money here. If I could speak directly to the woman who owns this restaurant that I'm speaking of, why do you run this place still if it clearly kills your soul so much? I see you mistreat practically every patron who comes here. People aren't going to want to come here, it's a small town, word travels. Sell the restaurant or get an attitude adjustment, you're in the business of SERVICE. I know it sucks, I wouldn't do it, but if I did to make money I wouldn't sabotage my restaurant either! read more

The food here is delicious but the service here is suspect. I really enjoyed their Chille Relleno and their Chimi-Cheesecake and Ice Cream. For most of the meal we were the only ones there. The food took a long time to get to us which could be because they do take pride in their cooking. This could've been overlooked but the service was so bad. Our main waitress was pretty short with us and even rolled her eyes at us. It could have just been our waitress since the other servers were a little more helpful but it was difficult to get their attention even in such a small restaurant. read more

Food is amazing. Their red sauce is the best (steak ranchero). They are also very friendly and the prices are reasonable!

During Covid we like to support local businesses but will only dine outdoors. It was a cool evening & customers were seated inside. We asked & the server (a pleasant young man) happily offered to seat us on the back patio. He turned on the patio lights & provided us a nice romantic evening. The food was very fresh & generous portions consistent with our past experiences here. My grilled shrimp taco entree was delicious. After a day of hiking at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, we decided to have an early dinner in Angel.s Camp on our way back to the Bay Area. Angels was quiet when we arrived around 5 pm and quickly filled up! Lots of people waiting for tables on our way out! Cute little restaurant! Service was efficient. My husband ordered the Carnitas meal which came with rice and beans. The pork was cooked with grilled jalapeños and onions and was delicious. I ordered 2 different items from the Ala Carte menu. I had a shrimp taco which included small shrimp sautéed with jalapeños and onions and tomato. It was served with a slice of lime and sliced avocado on a corn tortilla. I also ordered Chicken Sopes, which were served with a very good salsa verde. The fried masa was outstanding. The sopes were topped with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream as well as queso fresca. The chips and salsa were very good and I enjoyed a large fresh horchata. We will be back if we travel to the Sierras again! read more
