This hidden little restaurant tucked away at the side of the road serves up some authentic mexican food!! I really enjoyed my combo plate of a pork tamal with a cheese enchilada. I asked for the sauces they put on top to be on the side. The pork inside the tamal was plentiful with just enough seasoning and masa shell. The cheese enchilada was good too and I appreciated the dollop of tasty guacamole/sour cream on top. I used a little of it as a dip for the tortilla chips that are served before the entrees. The refried beans were not salty and perfect with the fluffy, flavorful mexican rice. My friend stated her carne asada tostada bowl was delicious! Sitting inside here is like sitting in a large dining room in someone's cozy home. I only wish they would play some spanish guitar music in the background. Had lunch here on our way home from our annual visit to Big Trees State Park to view dogwood blossoms. Lunch was great. Actually lunch and dinner the next day was great since they give you so much food in their combination plates. I had the chile relleno (skip the red sauce) and a side of freshly made guacamole with chips. My husband had the combination plate (shredded beef taco and chicken tamale). Tasted like old school authentic Mexican food (at least what we think of as authentic). The rice was delicious, refried beans on point, but best of all the taco and tamale. Both delicious! My relleno was so good I kept thinking I should've ordered two, but there's always next time. There is more parking in back. Our waitress was quick getting our drinks and order. She recommended the Gonzo tacos. My husband ordered the Enchiladas Poblanas. They have a nice back deck that allows dogs. For $10.95 we had the Gonzo's Tacos Two fried tacos filled with a mix of carne asada, chorizo, melted cheese & our delicious spicy hot red diabla sauce. I really liked them but they are spicy lingering on your tongue. I liked the enchilada but my husband thought the creamy green sauce was too rich $14.95. I thought the prices are good too. I ordered Gonzo's tacos with no produce. The tacos were filled with a generous amount of beef and chorizo, and the key to making this extra delicious, was the generous amount of cheese that was at both the bottom portion of the tacos, as well as on top of the meat. Perfection in every bite. The meat was perfectly seasoned, and the taco shells were lightly crisp. So, so delicious! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and checked on us a number of times to make sure that we were enjoying our meal, and to ask if we needed anything. The food I enjoyed the most was the rice, salsa, and cheese inside the chili Relleno. The beans tasted as they've been refried a little too long. The Chile Relleno tasted like flour and the enchilada sauce tasted bland. Once we got our food, we had to wait another five minutes when she became available because she had forgot to give us silverware. I had my five-year-old son with me, who typically eats off my plate, so I requested an extra plate. But the women, especially the older Mexican woman who hosts and perhaps owns the restaurant, are SO MISERABLE that it makes it impossible to enjoy the food, as good and fresh as it is. If I could give any advice to this establishment, please FIRE hire immediately and get someone who isn't miserable as a cold rat. If she's the owner, SELL the business. The food took a long time to get to us which could be because they do take pride in their cooking. This could've been overlooked but the service was so bad. Our main waitress was pretty short with us and even rolled her eyes at us. After a day of hiking at Calaveras Big Trees State Park, we decided to have an early dinner in Angel.s Camp on our way back to the Bay Area. My husband ordered the Carnitas meal which came with rice and beans. The pork was cooked with grilled jalapeños and onions and was delicious. I ordered 2 different items from the Ala Carte menu. I had a shrimp taco which included small shrimp sautéed with jalapeños and onions and tomato. It was served with a slice of lime and sliced avocado on a corn tortilla. I also ordered Chicken Sopes, which were served with a very good salsa verde. The fried masa was outstanding. The sopes were topped with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream as well as queso fresca. My family and I really liked the flavors here -- the eggs were flavorful and the tortilla chips held up to all the very tasty salsa verde. I hate to be negative but I really disliked Angels Mexican Kitchen. First off, we ordered guacamole. It was good. But we asked for flour chips and they CHARGED us for the chips. We're we supposed to eat the guacamole with our hands. And to boot, the chips were not good. The original corn chips they gave us were inedible. Worse than the cheapest store bought chips. I ordered two cheese enchiladas on their combination menu. The food was cold. The beans were warm, but not hot. So the fact the enchiladas were cold, the cheese wasn't really melted all the way. Not good. My husband said his food was just ok. The bill for 2 people was $49 dollars and change. Pretty pricey. Other than the food all we had was a soda and a cup of coffee. The waitress was ok. She never came to see how everything was. We had been there before and it was just ok. I forgot that when I picked this restaurant or I would not have gone there.
