We were in town to visit Yosemite and wanted Mexican food. Their chips and salsa were amazing. The salsa had great flavor and the chips were light and crispy. We actually asked for more. The food did take an inordinate amount of time to come out even though our server commented that it was a slow Monday night. They were out of the quesabirria, which was a disappointment to my husband. He opted for chicken enchiladas and I had carnitas enchiladas. We both got red and green sauce on top. I liked the corn tortillas for the enchiladas as they're usually flour ones. They were really good. I didn't like the sour cream drizzle on top. I would have preferred a dollop so I could take bites without sour cream. One of my daughters ordered steak tacos. They are small street taco size. There was plenty of meat and a heavy sprinkle of cilantro. She enjoyed them. My other daughter had the huarache. She said it was good, although very heavy on the beans. All our meals, except the huarache came with rice and beans. The rice was weird. It wasn't soy sauce like another review mentioned. The rice wasn't light and fluffy. It was heavy and seemed like it sat out or under a warmer too long. There was nothing special to it. The refried beans tasted good, although they were very thick and dense. I know this is weird but the water was really good. It was so refreshing. I always find it interesting when there are no Latinx working in a restaurant serving Latin American food and that was the case here. I hope the manager looks to add some diversity to the staff. It will likely improve things like the rice. Overall a good place that hit the spot. read more

Sure, why not. Spent $73 here for 3 orders of those quesawhatever tacos, a bacon cheeseburger w fries, a beef burrito and a side of beans w (white?) rice. Price pretty normal for feeding a family of 5 from a restaurant in town. Tacos... dry. I wanted to be so ready for those ones you see all over Instagram but unfortunately these aren't it. Meat was dry, tortilla probably hand made and was okay but all in all (sauce included) not to much flavor. Beans, bland Rice, I'm not sure what it was, definitely not Mexican, more like garlic white rice. Bummer. My husbands burrito although decent sized... dry, bland and lacking meat. Maybe because it wasn't a "wet" burrito. Something we could of cooked here for sure. Chips w salsa (I never received the salsa) were okay. Cheeseburger and fries, GREAT! We had dinner here tonight and all I can say is PHENOMENAL! Literally an 11/10....from the salsa to the burritos to the margarita, all top notch. We ordered the chili relleno and chili verde burrito (we should have shared one or the other ‍‍‍) and the blood orange margarita, we also had 2 orders of chips and salsa ‍. Cascabel Restaurant, located in the charming foothill town of Angels Camp, is a wonderful Mexican restaurant that happens to be inside a historic building, in the historic heart of downtown. Cascabel Restaurant features lots of foothill charm, along with outstanding food, amazingly friendly service and makes for fine dining in California's gold country. The dining room is large, very open, and tastefully decorated in a mostly historic decor. You'd hardly know you're in a Mexican restaurant if it wasn't for the delicious smell, and a few sombreros hung on the wall. I was surprised when I entered the restaurant at how large the dining room is, considering the small facade. After I was "meeted and greeted" by friendly Jessica, I was given a basket of fresh tortilla chips, and a bowl of salsa roja, which the menu describes as "chunky roasted tomato." The salsa was fresh, made in-house, and the chips were warm and fresh as well. Of course a bottle of Pacifico beer made for a frosty cold appetizer. I focused on the "A La Carte" section of the menu, and when I spotted fish tacos, I was hooked, complete with hook, line and sinker. The menu describes the fish tacos as "Two fish tacos, drizzled with garlic sauce, and topped with cabbage, cilantro and onion." I describe them as delicious... It had been a couple of months since I'd had the pleasure to enjoy fish tacos, so when I spotted fish tacos on the "A La Carte" section of the menu, I was hooked. I was not disappointed, as these fish tacos are a good as it gets, and reminded me of the fish tacos I've eaten during my many trips to Baja California, Mexico. Each taco began with two medium size - not "street taco" size - corn tortillas that were toasted, to bring out the rustic flavor. Two very large, battered pieces of fish were placed on the tortillas, and garnished with crema, chopped cabbage, along with diced cilantro and white onion. Two wedges of lime completed the taco plate, which not only enhanced the flavor when squeezed on the tacos, but added to the beautiful presentation. Cascabel Restaurant is very generous with the fish, as each taco had a LOT of fish! The fish was perfectly battered, deep fried to a golden brown, and crunchy on the outside, and tender white inside. The fresh cabbage - not lettuce as commonly found north of the border - along with the cilantro and onion were super fresh and delicious, and the crema - the menu refers to it as "garlic sauce" - brought it all together and made for wonderful fish tacos. One bite of these delicious fish tacos took me back to the malecon, in Ensenada, Mexico, where over the years, I've eaten many fish tacos. The fish tacos served at this fine restaurant are simply delicious, and they're authentic Mexican! During my lunch, Jessica asked if I'd be interested in a bowl of fresh, in-house made jalapeño salsa. How could I resist such an offer? The salsa roja that came with the tortilla chips was delicious, but the jalapeño salsa was simply amazing, as it was fresh, flavorful, spicy, robust, and medium spicy hot. Jessica warned me that it was hot, but to me it was just right. Like the salsa roja and the chips, it was complimentary. It's been a long time since I have had the chance to enjoy fish tacos with such truly authentic Mexican flavor and of such quality! My lunch was simply amazing, the atmosphere was both comfortable and historic, and Jessica's friendly service really made for a pleasant dining experience. When you're visiting Angels Camp, and you're in the mood for great Mexican food, head over to Cascabel Restaurant. This fine restaurant gets five stars from me for both food and service. Grabbing a bite to eat before heading to a concert at Ironstone Amphitheatre in Murphy's, we decided to try Cascabel. Located in downtown Angel's Camp, Cascabel is a small, little Mexican restaurant that serves up big flavor. We started with an order of their complimentary chips and salsa (mild salsa). Additional chips and salsa are $1. They also offer two spicer versions of salsa and you can try the whole trio for $3 (I believe). We also opted to try their guacamole and fried avocado. Neither of us had ever heard of fried avocado before so we couldn't pass on the opportunity. It was surprisingly really good! And it came with a smooth, creamy dipping sauce that was tasty! The guacamole was good too - the perfect balance of salt and acid to avocado. For my entree, I ordered the street tacos: two carnitas and one chicken. They don't skimp on the meat and both the chicken and carnitas were so flavorful. The next time you find yourself out in the Angel's Camp area, come give Cascabel a try. read more

Experience: I came here on a weekday nearing lunchtime with my mom and two little nieces. We were trying to catch a movie next door that was around an hour from our sitting down. Unfortunately we were late to the movie because there was only one server working (no shade to her, she was friendly and as attentive as possible). Soon after we sat down, multiple parties kept pouring in. Our server brought drinks and chips out as soon as she could. After we ordered, it took about 45 minutes for our food to arrive. Apparently, the kitchen was taking care of all To-go orders before the dining room? That was pretty disappointing to hear. We almost walked out, but decided to give the benefit of the doubt, plus there was nowhere else we could go at this point. The Food: Probably the most different Chile Relleno I've ever had, but in a good way. Egg battered and fried to perfection, with a red CREAM sauce (if it's not cream, please correct me - either way it was amazing) - it was so so delicious. Now the sides...that's where it gets real weird. Beans and rice? Not here! The plates come with creamy Chile potatoes (basically expertly blended mashed potatoes with green Chile mixed throughout). I was a little put off at the thought of mashed potatoes at a Mexican spot - but it was a nice surprise and super tasty. Ambiance: Rustic and cozy, with rock lining the walls - this place is reminiscent of maybe an Italian style restaurant? Clean and modern, I think this cozy spot needs more color to match the drink glasses I saw other people getting served! I love what they're trying to do here. The food service took quite some time, and the overall quality of the food wasn't exceptional nor worth the money and wait. I ordered the Camarones with spicy sauce since it is one of my favorite Mexican dishes. -Camarones (spicy): The camarones dish came with the shrimp in a sauce of your choosing, rice, guacamole, sour cream, and choice of flour or corn tortillas. I got the corn tortillas, however they resembled flour tortillas more since they were pale in color and thicker. The corn tortillas were lacking in flavor and the texture was too doughy. The guacamole was bland, as was the rice (it lacked any type of seasoning). The shrimps were well cooked and the sauce had a nice spice level however the flavor was not authentic. The tacos... imagine if you've been to Mexico a few times on vacation, learned how to properly spice and cook various dishes as is done in that region... then went and bought the ingredients and prepared the tacos. There's not a magic to this: when you use fresh, high quality ingredients tossed together with knowledge and proper technique, beauty results; but that is a rare beauty and to be appreciated and encouraged... because so many restaurants cut corners that when you find a place that knows what they're doing, it is magic. I don't get why this place is authentic food. The Carne Asada plate was not served in true Mexican style and was not served with refried beans. Instead it was served with regular beans and chili. I know what its like as we have been to many Mexican restaurants. White Rice - Nope, not a good part of a Carne Asada plate. I can understand if I am eating Pho, Japanese or Chinese but it's a big no for Mexican food. It took forever to get our food and the waitresses checking on us frequently was getting extremely annoying. I did not want to make a scene of it in there because I'm not one to make a fuss but they need to rethink how Mexican food is made and served. This will go in our do not visit again books when we visit Angels Camp. Your opinion may vary though. Try it if you want. Lost Coast double IPA was a perfect accompaniment with the house made roasted salsa and fresh and warm chips. Terrible!! I placed an order over the phone for pick up and was told 30 min. I arrived and it wasn't ready. We waited an hr for our order. At 8:03pm three ladies came in while we were waiting(35 min after we ordered on the phone. They were allowed to eat in the restaurant after closing. They got their chips and their food brought to the table before our order was ready. Such BS! We could have ordered and eaten before our takeout order was ready. Also I ordered shrimp fajitas and they literally use soy sauce! It tasted like a Chinese order and smelt like an Indian dish with curry. The rice is plain white rice with soy sauce on it.
