As you can see from my prior two reviews, I have been here twice in 2025 including my first visit. We decided to stop here again for our third visit to pick up some subs to take on our ferry ride to Cape May, New Jersey. We were here around 10:30 AM. Only two others were eating in the restaurant. I ordered my small 10 inch Italian sub with oil and hot peppers for $14.95. Most small subs are $14.95. My total bill was $28.30 excluding gratuity. I took some packets of malt vinegar for my sub. My sub tasted great on the ferry. We agreed we will return here again, when we take the ferry.

"Your daddy was quite surprised To find you with the working girls in the county jail Well, I did not think the girl could be so cruel And I'm never going back to my old school" (Steely Dan) Casapulla's Grocery & Deli sure is "Old School". They've been around since 1956, and the family business now spans five decades, four generations, and five family-owned Delaware locations. They sell Italian-style sandwiches, and also have a big deli counter to buy meats and cheese by the pound, and also have a freezer with frozen entrees like ziti, raviolis, etc. Oh, and they also have grocery items like sauces. This "Old School" place has it all. The sandwiches we had for lunch were about the largest we've ever had and clearly rival the very best we've enjoyed at home. We ordered two of their six-inch grinders. Mine was $11.75 for an appropriately named "Old School". It had sweet soppressata, sharp provolone, hot capicola and prosciutto with lettuce, tomato, onion, hot peppers and vinegar. My wife had a $9.35 Boiled Ham with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. A few observations (OK, three). 1) the freshly baked sub rolls were delicious -super soft and perfect. 2) The size of the rolls and their related amount of ingredients sure as hell weren't six inches. They were closer to 50% more than that. 3) the amount of goodies Casapulla's stuffs in their rolls is incredible. Mine was stuffed so high with meat and cheese; it was pretty difficult to close up the roll. Finishing these massive "small" sandwiches was out of the question. Half was plenty. The remains are going with us on the ferry to New Jersey today for a second lunch. Seriously, how often do you get two go's at a small sandwich? Thanks for a fantastic customer experience, Casapulla, and a big shout-out to Nick, the very charming young guy who took our order.

It's difficult in my opinion to get decent hoagies in Delaware but this place satisfies me pretty well. I ordered the chicken salad and it was good! Perfect spot to grab a hoagie and chips and head to the beach. Extra points for the Herr's chips. The cashier was extremely friendly.

We ordered takeout and all the food was fantastic. The cheesesteak featured high-quality ribeye and provolone , and we added fried onions and mushrooms. Tastes like a Liscio's roll from Philly--the best! Same great roll for an Italian sub, beautifully prepared with the freshest ingredients. Onion rings were superb--just the right amount of breading and no slimy, runaway onions. Highly recommend!

Very solid sub spot. They are definitely a top 3 rated spot for the entire region. Can't go wrong with a classic Italian but frankly all their sandwiches and cheesesteaks are very good.

A delicious, fresh Italian Sub with all the fixings! Loved that it was stuffed to full capacity, and the seasonings were generous and delicious! All ingredients were fresh and crisp! Would absolutely recommend these subs and will be back when in the area! Getting several next time to pack for the beach!

Order a few subs from here the other day and I have to say...maybe just not for me. The Italy Sub, the best seller, the cold cuts were cut to thick for my liking. Overall I didn't think they had much flavor and the sweet peppers were just pieces. I really didn't get the feel that it was Genoa Salami, capicola, peppered ham and very little provolone....more I think about it the more I'm disappointed . Started this revolution with 3 stars, now down to two. I also had the Boars Head London Broil Sub with sweet peppers & oil. The London Broil wasn't rare like advertised, medium at best but the meat was really dry like it was laying around for a bit. I did find another place that I really like and ordering from here to compare the two. I'll be going bad to the other place. We also had other subs as well, the turk0stuffer, another Italian, and a meatball. So we did our homework across the board.

Been here several times and I love the subs. Been trying a different one each time. I always have to get a few pickles too.

    Great service and great sandwiches

So for me when I read a review what I really want to know is if the person writing the review will actually go back and do business at this particular location again. Absolutely YES!! The owners are super nice and the staff is trained right. Both our sandwiches were FIRE!!

Best subs! They use quality meats on the Italian and the Italian prosciutto is excellent! Whenever we're on the area this is a must stop.

Hearty 12-inch sub loaded with fresh carved turkey breast, cheese, sweet peppers, and a nice sliced tomato. Great value.

Best Italian hoagie I've had in years. Lots of meat. Can't wait to go back in my next trip to the shore.

I had written a previous review. My wife said it was too much so I took it down and revised it…read more The food was amazing. They do serve some serious nachos! The portions for most of the food is deceptively large and all scratch recipes. You will be leaving with take-out boxes for sure. The Service was pretty awesome. Last summer, my wife and I discovered First State, which at the time was still new. Dallas was our server the first time that we ate at First State, and then we were lucky enough to have him again this time and he remembered us. Before we could get a word out he said "Hey, welcome back!" like we had been friends for years. BEST SERVER EVER! Extremely attentive without crowding our table. Very knowledgeable. I suspect that that is a reflection of the whole staff. The hostess was pleasant. A bit quiet but pleasant. The bartender, Joel (?), seemed fun and engaging. He welcomed everyone like they were regulars, and really looked like he was enjoying his job. Even the young kid that dropped our food was on point, setting our dishes in the right places without asking. Making sure that we didn't need anything before he left. The whole experience was great. I'm a fan and we will be back. The atmosphere and vibe was fun and relaxing. Not your standard rush to order, eat fast, and "here's your bill" sit down restaurant. The restaurant is very clean and it is open and spacious. The place has that great neighborhood brewpub vibe feel. We LOVED the beer label walls! I want to do that in my man cave! Awesome idea. The large TVs were playing a variety of sports. The music was pretty good. Maybe a touch loud. They have live music that seemed to be setting up as we were leaving. Apparently they have live music every Friday and Saturday. We wish that we could have stayed. Dallas said that the band coming in that night was pretty popular. All in all, First State was a fun, and delicious dining experience. my only criticism would be that it is a bit pricey. I understand that scratch restaurants are going to be more expensive, but charging someone for a small container of sauce seems a little like nickel and dime budgeting. Understandable but not attractive All in all, First State is a great time. Ask for Dallas. He's next level service and you'll leave with a new friend. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR FIRST STATE!!!!
