Visited this shop after seeing it from the road for years. Had never been to a Carvel before, but I did Immediately recognize "Fudgy the Whale" as I browsed the products and the adverts. There are a good amount of flavors to choose from and sample if you want. The staff were nice and were very patient with my indecisiveness. lol I ordered the "fudge brownie sundae dasher" and it was really good. Most of the ice cream cakes and such were in a deep freezer. My biggest complaint was the temperature inside the store. it was WAY too hot in there. Hot and stuffy. Cold November day and I opted to sit outside at a picnic table instead of dealing with the immense heat inside that made it seem like all the oxygen was gradually depleting from the atmosphere. However, I would definitely return to try more flavors. I just hope they utilize some good old-fashioned air conditioning next time. read more

We stumbled upon this locally owned and operated Carvel location when we moved to the area last year, because we visited the Aqua Leisure Pools next door LOL. This is the spot to get a frozen treat in this corner of Chesapeake! My fam and I come here often after getting dinner nearby or just for a quick treat. The staff are always upbeat and friendly and the shop is kept clean. They have a variety of hard ice cream flavors on hand, as well as soft serve, ice cream sammies and of course, their famous ice cream cakes. Over the past year, I think we've tried just about everything from Carvel. I'm a big fan of their soft serve and usually get the soft serve by itself or milkshakes (they are made with the soft serve). Everything comes in a variety of sizes to cater to anyone's appetite and you can pretty much customize everything to your liking (for example, Cookies and Cream milkshake can be made with either vanilla, chocolate or swirl; ice creams can be topped with anything, classic sundaes can be made with any flavor soft serve with any topping etc.) They also have weekday daily specials going on (see pic): Monday - 1/2 off Sundae Dashers Tuesday - 1/2 off Carvelanches Wednesday - BOGO Classic Sundaes Thursday - 1/2 off shakes Friday - 1/2 off Banana Barges It's also nice that they stay open late (in terms of Chesapeake). Growing up, we'd occasionally get Carvel cakes for our birthdays. I never knew they sold actual ice cream! We moved out to Chesapeake recently and I can say we have found quite the gem. It's hot out? Carvel. You want something for your sweet tooth? Carvel. Craving a second dessert? Carvel. Hands down. My oldest recently had a birthday and we got a cake from here. They did let us choose a different ice cream flavor, we got mint chocolate chip, for a bit of an up charge. They also can print edible images for the tops of the cakes. The cake was pretty good and got two thumbs up all around. Now, on to their regular ice cream. I'm a creature of habit so my top two flavors are always the cookie butter and Oreo cold brew. One scoop of each in a waffle cone? Incredible. My kiddos love their dragonfruit lemonade and the cotton candy. Their ice cream is so creamy, velvety and addicting. You know those little chocolate crunchies in the middle of the cakes? You can get them on top of your ice cream! The staff have been different every time, but they're always very kind and patient especially with my children. I really appreciate it. Coming from one of our worst Cinema Cafe experiences that required an immediate dose of happiness and where else but Carvel can you find happiness for sale and smiles for free? I am currently stuck on their strawberry shortcake dasher. Just like it sounds, a strawberry shortcake with your choice of ice cream (mine is always strawberry-not only do you get fresh cut up strawberries but there are chunks of them in your ice cream too) and whipped cream. Today I felt like a double dose of happiness and went with a medium. Really, for me, a small is the best size but I ate as much of that medium I could just to wash away the Cinema Cafe sadness that was smothering me. The young ladies here are always so helpful, friendly and willing to give you suggestions and samples of the yummy ice cream. Today we had the place to ourselves so I didn't feel rushed and when I was ready, they gladly made my smile to go. I had a very bad experience with this location. I called and spoke to an individual named Meghan regrding a cake with an image for my husband. She gave me the email address to send the image. She informed me to send the image to carvel1855@gmail.com. I prepaid for the cake and we agreed that I would pick the cake up the next day at 1:30pm. I spoke with her for approximately 26 minutes about the cake, how I was using a Halloween photo for my husband and I mentioned please don't judge the photo as it was his Halloween costume. She laughed and said no judgment here. She asked what color I would like the border and I mentioned the picture has quite abit of orange in it so let's go with orange. My daughter picked up the cake for me but she was not aware of the details of the cake. When I came home from work the cake did not have the image of my husband on it. I called the store and informed as my husband's birthday was the following day. The store rep said she had to call the owner to inquire about what to do regarding the error. I was appalled when the owner suggested there was nothing he could do for my inconviencee. No apology, no soory for your inconvience. He stated that I could return the cake to the store and exhange it for the new one and they would not charge me the $10 for the imaging. It took him over an hour to return my call and he implied that it is my story versus the employee. He could not answer the fact that an email was provided to me to ssend the image and I had proof of the email. I asked him did he look at the email. He said he did not. I am a business owner and this is such a poor way to conduct business. In the past five years I have bought my husband's cake at this store but I will take my business else where. The owner was rude, condescending, unapologettic and did not take accountability for their error. This is great example of how someone can have a business but not know how to do business. This Carvel did nothing to make it right. Stop taking your customers for granted and treat people how you want to be treated. I have spent the last three hours on this matter when I could have been attending to other matters for my husband's birthday. Zero stars for poor customer service and inability to rectify the situation. read more

It's pretty unreasonable for what it is, ice cream. In addition, they don't even fill the cup up all the way. This is a nice little find since moving to Chesapeake. It's down on South Battlefield and I have to pass a Dairy Queen to get here, but it's totally worth it! When you step inside they definitely have the whole retro thing going on and it works nicely. The counter is over to the left side as you enter and partially along the back. To the right are some coolers full of sodas and in the middle you find old ice cream parlor stools and chairs covered in red with metal banding around them. It's a nice touch. On my visit I picked up a peanut butter and chocolate milkshake. I don't remember the cost but it wasn't expensive and was oooooooh so delicious. The people working there were very nice and it seems like it's a family operation. I noticed on the way out there's also tables and chairs outside which will be especially nice once once spring and summer get here. Much better than Baskin Robbins, but I wish they would stock what they advertise. I visit frequently, and the last six times I've gone, they have not had marshmallow topping in stock. All those times except today at least had the pink/purple marshmallow topping for their unicorn fairy creation thing that they were able to substitute. Neither the marshmallow topping nor the unicorn marshmallow topping were available this last visit, despite both items being advertised on the menu. I was such a frequent customer that Google maps would suggest my destination every time I got in my car on Friday afternoons, but this definitely defeats my purpose of going there. read more
