If I could give Carty Moving and Storage negative stars I would. In a previous review I outlined how I used Carty to move last September and how they overcharged me for that move by aprox. $515 on my family credit card. Despite multiple emails and phone calls over a six month period, it took me posting a negative Yelp review to get the situation remedied. In the end, Tommy Carty refunded $345 of the $515 overcharge. Because I never got a quote in writing from this company -which I had used three previous times to this instance with stellar and affordable service- he didn't see fit to honor what his employee told me over the phone (three hours at $150/hr for a whopping total of $450, plus bridge toll and drive time). Fine. My family and I were just so tired of dealing with it we said "fuck it, we'll take that and consider the matter concluded." After my Mom received a check from Carty I updated my Yelp review from one star to three star and said that while I had had a bad experience, Tommy Carty and crew had done the right thing in the end. Apparently that isn't good enough for Tommy Carty. Starting three days ago I started to get emails from him, harassing me and bullying me about the details of my Yelp review. I went back and forth with him a few times and told him to stop contacting me, that our business was concluded and that I was entitled to my opinion of his business practices. He has responded with increasingly nasty emails - threatening me with legal action over this review. I quote: From an email yesterday (4/15) at 1:53pm: "and in fact if I take that paper work to the PUC you might just end up paying back the money I refunded you, its happened before, believe me," From an email yesterday (4/15) at 2:16pm: "the move actually did take 6 hours if you add up all the drive time between each location as per PUC rules, and I did not threaten you with repaying, you need to read things more carefully, but be careful I might just do that" From an email Friday (4/16) at 7:22am: "It looks like I'm not getting through to you, maybe I should take it to the PUC, so you will need to get your paperwork in order and, because you and your 5 witnesses will have to show up for a hearing and when they rule in my favor I will be coming after you for slander and lost revenue due to the lies you posted on yelp, your making life very difficult for yourself, and don't worry the PUC deal with this kind of stuff every day and know very well that that job could not have been done in 3 hours, see you in court, Tommy" Yesterday morning I sent Tommy an email that simply said "Do not contact me." This is the response I got: From an email today (4/17) at 6:49am: "Sorry Kate, I didn't get chance to read your emails, too busy looking after my sober customers, have a drink for your self and then sit down at your computer a decide who's life your going to fuck with you sad individual, have another drink first tho, go on you know you need one." THEN LESS THAN THREE MINUTES LATER: "have have a drink there Kate, you'll feel better, go on have a drink" This guy is a fucking WACK JOB and he's actually starting to scare me. I'm in Chicago for business, but when I get back to Oakland I'm seriously considering filing a police report. I don't know when stating my opinion of poor service given became considered slander... Be forewarned, Yelpers - if you use Carty Moving and Storage and have a negative experience with them, be aware that if you Yelp about it you'll be bullied and threatened by this company's owner until you change your review. Personally, he can try to take me to court if he wants to -- it's not actionable -- and, I've already filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau about his practices asking them to intercede and get him to stop contacting me. Eh. I just moved over the weekend and used these guys. Overall, it wasn't the greatest experience. But they got the job done. The story begins, my friends, when I called them two weeks ago to book the move. I didn't think I'd have many boxes and told the guy who answered the phone, who spoke in the thickest irish accent -- I learn later that this is Tommy, and he's the owner, I think. I said something like, I won't have many boxes but I'll have furniture, and her'es the furniture I'll have: (several items). He said he'll provide 2 guys and it's $95 an hour. Sweet, I say, and book them. Mind you I had called Delancey and Pat Ryan, both of whom said I would need three guys and it would cost between $140-150 an hour. I'm frugal, I'll say it. I'm learning more and more that you get what you pay for. The day before the move a lady from Carty called and said the movers would arrive between 1-3. My husband and I began moving boxes down three flights (51 steps total-- remember this for later!) into the garage so that the guys wouldn't have to schlep up the stairs as much, and thus, cost us money. We finish around 1:45, and my knee was completely screwed up and hurting each time I went down the stairs. Not good. At 3:30 I called to find out where they were. No answer at the office. At 3:40 I call. Tommy answers. Says he'll find out whassup. He calls back and says his crew is finishing a "hell move" where the woman wasn't packed all the way and blah blah blah blah blah. These things happen, which is why they gave me the two-hour time window. If you're gonna be late CALL ME AND TELL ME Anyhoo, they say they'll arrive in 25 minutes. They show up 45 minutes later. The first thing the dude says to me is "you didn't arrange for parking!???!!!!" And I'm like, you can park on the sidewalk, cause in my (now former) hood, you can do that. He's all pissy anyway. They start moving stuff. The pissy guy says, "You know, if you want to spend some more money we could get some more guys over here to get this done faster." I said I need to ask my husband. Pissypants' reply: "I already asked him and he just gave me the runaround." Um, don't badmouth my husband! I hobble up the stairs and hobble back down to find the guys standing on the truck on the phone -- well one of them is, anyway. Pissypants is just standing there. I said, what's up? He said, we have to talk to our boss. And I heard them talking about the previous "hell move" which I'm sure was really terrible and blah blah blah -- BUT I'M PAYING YOU BY THE HOUR. MOVE, PEOPLE. LITERALLY. I said, what the hell? You show up 45 minutes late and the first thing you say to me is You didn't arrange for parking!!!! No apology, and now you're standing around?? I'm paying you by the hour!" Pissypants says this "I'll take your stuff off the truck right now if you're going to give me attitude. I'll do it. I'll take your stuff off the truck right now." I was ah, stunned. I said, Do you think your boss would like that? My husband came down. I told him what happened. Pissypants tries to apologize, saying he had a really bad day. Dude, go work at Target if you don't want to deal with moving nightmares. It's the nature of the biz. I was so pissed myself, I told him don't worry, we were calling his boss. Tommy comes over with two other crew members, and says I had way more stuff than I told him on the phone (which is true, but we moved it downstairs), and that I didn't tell him about the stairs. Um yes I did. How could I leave that out?? He said, you didn't tell me you had this much stuff -- I said, well it depends on what a lot of stuff is -- to me, this is more than I expected, but it's not that much stuff. To you, it may be something else. He got huffy. I said look, this is obviously a miscommunication so let's just get it over with. We negotiated, and he said he would have the other guys stay and would have the truck loaded in half an hour if I gave him cash up front. I give him the cash. They load the truck, meet us at the new place and unload the truck. The boys worked really hard, even pissypants, so I ended up giving them a big tip. Bottomline, my stuff was moved. The total price: $760 for 4.5 hours of work. I probably would have come out the same using Delancey or Pat Ryan, and I'm sorry I didn't. The whole experience didn't leave a good impression on me. I would have posted a review earlier, but I just joined Yelp. I used Carty in the past almost 2 years ago and they were amazing. Came to help me on a Sunday at the last minute, worked quickly and efficiently, and even came in under their 2 hour minimum, despite me moving to the other side of the city. Because of that great experience, I didn't hesitate to call them when it was time to make another move at the end of April-- this time only half the distance of the last move. When I called to get a quote, I was told it would take about 3 hours to pick up my things, drive to my roommate's, pick up his things, bring them all back over to the new place, and unload the truck. We didn't really have all that much stuff (which was all preboxed and packed close to our respective front doors for quick loading.) The guys were friendly enough, but at both my and my roommate's place, they took personal phone calls and moved really slowly, lacking the sense of urgency I had been so impressed with the time before. After waiting at the new apartment for them to arrive, my roommate called to tell me they were going to take a 30 minute LUNCH BREAK (they were already into the 4 hour mark at this point, well over their quoted time) before coming back to finish. They pulled in front of the new apartment, and 55 minutes later, showed back up. They started unloading, placing boxes without paying attention to which room they were labeled. In the end, they only took off 30 minutes from the bill for their 55 minute break, and charged for close to 6 hours of work, making my fee over $200 more than the original quote. How frustrating! The experience ended with me chasing the leader out before he drove away because he put my bed together wrong, and having to argue with him to fix it. Personal opinion? I have used Carty Moving & Storage twice. Tommy's rates are reasonable and was only relativley a little bit late both times but he moved quickly once he arrived. So I decided to once again book them as my movers. I had been a loyal customer. However, I booked him for the 3rd time he failed to show up. After I sent him email confirmations of time, date and location of pickup. So I wait, wait and wait and no movers the day of my move. Tommy finally answers and tells me there was a mixed-up of the date of my move. I have written confirmation of my time and move. He apologized for the mix-up but the apology does nothing in regards to moving my boxes and belongings into my new place. I took time off work for this move. I'm very disappointed in the lack of service and professionalism with this move. I recommend to get a company that may costs a bit more but will save you the time and hassle of trying to locate them. After 2 good experiences with Carty, I hired them again and again had good results. We had a bit of a scheduling issue, but resolved it up front - they were the ones who ended up being flexible. On moving day, Tommy and 2 guys arrived on time, then they hustled like crazy and were done moving from one place to the other (1 bedroom) within 2 hours. I had a very good experience using Carty Moving for a move at the end of June and I thought I'd share my experience. 1. Mr. Carty (Tommy) and I exchanged emails ahead of time and he gave me an accurate estimate of how much the entire move would cost. It was a straight forward transaction with no hassle. Tip: Make sure you ask about the price with and without insurance. 2. Mr. Carty and one of his employees arrived ahead of time and quickly got to work. 3. They did a great job in packaging everything. I was most worried about my TV. But there was no reason for concern. They did a phenomenal job of wrapping it up and making sure it wasn't damaged! Used these guys twice. first time I lived on the third floor with some major furniture, had a very full garage a few blocks from our apartment with loads of awkward shaped stuff (many bikes) and they moved it all like it was nothing. The second time was a move from SF to Sonoma County. Again several places to load. The SF place was on a very steep hill with a neighbor who was super territorial about his sidewalk. Tommy and his crew handled it all cool as cucumbers. Loaded and unloaded super efficiently. All our stuff arrived safe and sound. I frantically called the top list of 4.5-5 star reviews on yelp to see if anyone could help within an hour. Needless to say, I was lucky to discover Carty Moving & Storage! They came to the rescue! They showed up at my place within an hour, wrapped everything and moved the house with ease. They did not scratch one piece of furniture, or hit a wall. Oh, yelpers, why did you do us wrong? With all of these awesome reviews, why oh why did Carty suck for us? They were not on time. They charged us the full fee for the hours they were stuck in traffic, which they would have avoided had they been on time. They charged us for the time they sat around eating the pizza we bought them. The total came in at $200 more than the quote, not including our generous tip (heard of customer service and goodwill? you'd think he would take off a half hour at least just make us feel better about that whopping bill). They put boxes in the wrong rooms, and some of those boxes (all labelled) were upside-down. The whole thing seemed disorganized and low energy. Nothing was really damaged (some small scratches), and we didn't have to lift anything. Those are very good things. But that's about it. read more

When I was younger and more energetic (read: hopped up on ephedrine and rowing crew six hours a day) I could pack up all my earthly belongings and fit them in the back of a Ford Bronco in an hour. But now that I'm older and wiser (also more fat and lazy) the thought of hauling my personal belongings with my own sweat and brawn sounds about as fun as poking myself in the eye. So I thought, "I'm an adult. I'm moving into my own place (totally alone, for the first time.) It's a milestone. I'm getting myself some help." And boy did I. I narrowed my criteria to Cheap (because I'm still young and poor) and Irish (because I'm mildly xenophobic. Who said that?) and I got Carty Moving. And they were awesome. $120/hour for three guys and a huge truck. I only had a small studio worth of stuff, so it took less than an hour and a half. The lads were friendly and the craic was mighty. Well, at least I had a great time. But I didn't lift a finger. I'm not sure how much fun they had. But they were nice about it. I booked through Lauren, who was very friendly and responsive. After reading the good reviews here I gave Carty moving a call to set up a movie. I'll admit to calling a bit last minute so I called quite a few of the highly ranked movers here on Yelp. All of them but one were completely booked and the one was able to squeeze me in only because my move was pretty small. However, when I called Carty moving they had slots open every day of the week. I'm the kind of person that thinks "If everyone else is booked out into the future, there must be a reason this place has so many openings!" So that was one thing that made me start to think twice about hiring Carty. I wanted to get some more information about and setting up the move and the guy I spoke to couldn't have been more vague. I'm here trying to book Carty and he can't tell me anything to help me out. It almost seemed like he was telling me he would book me without really knowing if he COULD actually book me. With every question I asked about booking and timelines, etc I got runaround answers. He then told me he would have to give me a call back to get answers to my questions. In the time I was waiting for the call back I re-read some of the yelp reviews, only the negative ones. And sure enough there was a review that talks about booking Carty and them not showing up. This was the precise thing I was worried about when getting the vague/clueless responses about the booking and timeframes. A few hours later I get a call back, which unfortunately I missed. I then proceeded to call the guy back a half hour later. When I got back on the phone with him, it was as if our previous conversation had never happened. I started asking the same questions and got the same vague clueless answers with no specifics. I laughed when he had none of the information I was after. He said "YOu think this is funny?" To which I said, "no, I think its quite sad really" and suggested we don't waist each others time and longer. I ended up calling and going with "One Big Man, One Big Truck." I haven't made the move yet, but I can tell you that the difference in the phone conversation and scheduling couldn't have been different.. and better. read more

Just the facts: The not so great: There was a communication breakdown prior to my move. I heard one thing, they heard something else. My moving window was 1pm - 3pm but the movers showed up at 5:30pm. They did call but due to the time snafu, I thought I might get a little bit of a discount which I did not. This was all sort of a bummer. I thought it was pricey and the guys could have moved a little faster loading but. . . The good: Nothing was broken, and they did a freaking amazing job fitting all my stuff in my small storage spaces. That was actually a miracle and I'm convinced not just anyone could have made all my stuff fit. . .let's just say they know how to pile high. I have to say, the Carty's were all really nice and seem like good people. I learned a lesson that everything should be totally clear up front. No gray area when setting up for moving day. I'd never hired movers prior to this move. If I move again (so help me God) I will probably hire the Carty's again to bump my review up another star. Most people would agree - moving is stressful and exhausting. Carty made the burden much easier to bear (pun intended). Their 3 man team, headed up by Tommy, did a fantastic job... they were prompt, pleasant, professional, and very hardworking. They were very detail-oriented, such as showing us any dings on furniture prior to wrapping it up, so that we were aware of the starting condition. They also took extra special care with the huge flatscreen TV, which we really appreciated. I called them on Thursday to get an appointment for Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. They took my information and said they would call me back. Hadn't heard from them by Friday afternoon so I called again. Set Wednesday as the day to move, and they said they would call me Tuesday with a time. Hadn't heard anything by 2:30 on Tuesday so I called. Got their voice mail, but was unable to leave a message as their mail box was full! Decided to cut bait and got an appointment with One Big Man & One Big Truck. Carty never called me back. Completely unacceptable way to do business Update: Carty's called me 2 days ago. Apparently they had me on their schedule for this week, not last. Although this is an understandable mistake, it doesn't help that much from my POV given that I was unable to contact them the day before I expected to move. read more

OK, so this is long over due... I used Carty moving way back in Yelp ancient history (early 2006?) and they did me RIGHT. So, I called them again recently when I wanted to move OUT of the place they moved me into... I have to say, they seem to have actually tightened things up a bit since I last used them. They were super efficient, and FAST. Wasted no time in getting my stuff in the truck, asked what was going, what not, etc. They wrapped anything potentially nickable in pads & plastic, so I felt super confident everything would arrive safely. They are SO professional! And when we got to the new place, they didn't just dump things any where, NO...they asked me what room things should go in (if they were not already labeled), and even put my bed together (Sah-WEET)! And then before they left, they asked me if there was anything they could help me rearrange. Tommy, if you're reading this, I can't remember his name, but the guy you are using to interact with the clients is excellent. He has the right personality for it, and deserves a big bonus! So, instead of planning and hiring movers way before my moving date, I called around and eventually got ahold of Carty Moving a couple days before I had to move. And by a couple, I'm pretty sure I mean like one (or two). They managed to squeeze me in, which is very awesome. Also, like I said, I'm a little disorganized and don't plan very well. So, when the movers got to my house I didn't have a lot packed. They finished packing all my shit up, hiked the boxes on their backs, and loaded the truck in record time. They are super fast and very reasonably priced. You can even pay with your credit card (for a small percentage fee), which is very nice if you don't quite have your deposit back from your old place.... They are super nice and even gave me a ride over to my new place. Also, the mover with the mutton chops (I think his name is Elvis...or Amos) is super sexy and let me sit on his lap on the ride over... ...call me! read more

You are a masochist (or really hate your friends) if you don't use these guys for your next local move. My boyfriend and I decided to move in together. He bribed his friends and rented a truck. I (who actually LIKE my friends too much to get them to break their backs lifting all my crap) called Carty Movers based on the existing Yelp reviews. These guys were super fast and very, very nice. My whole move (from the Mission to the Haight) took 2 hours and cost less than $200 (not including tip) (so, $90/hr). The boyfriend spent just as much on the truck, mileage, and gas, and had to haul all his crap himself (with his friends, anyway)! Granted, I was all packed and ready to go when Carty Movers got to the old place, which helps, but they were just speedy guys. Even if you need help packing, I'd imagine these guys won't dawdle (which is key when you are paying by the hour). They were pretty gentle with everything, all things considered (nothing was broken at the end of the day), and they offered to move the furniture around until I settled on an ideal spot in the new place. They were just super nice, and you really can't beat the price. Highly recommended. I'll be calling them again for my next intra-SF move. read more

Used Carty's moving for a move down the Peninsula. Used the Yelp sponsored link # to phone them, which seemed to forward the call through some Yelp-tunneled customer service messages. Once I got to a human, they made sure to ask what contents needed moving before recommending the number of people needed and approximating the time. There was a bit of confusion about the move time, but the scheduling was resolved easily a few days before when I checked in with them again. The actual move went great. The movers swept all the breakables (my roomie's) out of the hazard zones for transport, and were careful with all my stuff. Unlike other moves, where you are cringing while watching the unibrowed movers eye your liquor and scrape your stereo, Carty's was professional, fast, careful to avoid the ire of landlords, and even nice to talk to. I did not use them for packing services. Cost was $315 for a 3.5 hour move.= $90/hr. I would use them again . read more

The move itself was good. Tommy and his partner were super efficient. I did have an expensive original canvas oil painting that they initially treated like a dime-store print without asking, but once I told them it was an expensive piece they treated it gently. All in all, nothing broken, and a fair price ($90/hr for two guys) for the move. But check this out. Tommy and his partner were double parked at my old place on 22nd Street near Harrison. As we were finishing up and heading to my new place, a random parking enforcement officer - not the DPT, some special police guy with the city - comes and starts to write Tommy a ticket for blocking a lane of a two lane busy street without the permit. Ticket price? $622! Tommy is understandably PISSED, and it appears this has never happened to him before. Further, he expects me to pay it, even though he is the one getting cited and I have no obligation to pay it. Had I known I needed a permit to move, I would have gotten one, as I did on the other end of the move where I needed a crane (w permit) to get some big stuff up to the top floor (long story). We both were angry at this city parking dude, but held our tongues. I guess they're really starting to crack down on this. After the ride over to my new place, Tommy had cooled off and regained his professional composure, apologized for his earlier attitude and told me not to worry about the citation. He and his partner quickly and excellently completed the complicated move with the crane. In the end I offered to split the fine with him, as I felt bad that he and his partner otherwise would have lost money on the whole operation, just because some jerk of a parking guy wouldn't even give Tommy a warning for a first time offense. SO: These guys are great movers. If you have an expensive piece, tell them to treat it as such, just like you would with any movers. AND, keep in mind, YOU NEED A PERMIT TO BLOCK TRAFFIC. Movers rarely get cited for it because there are only a few enforcement officers, but with Newsom in charge they are cracking down. Tommy is worried that telling customers they'll have to pay an additional $125 to obtain a permit (the cost of getting one from the city) will drive them to other movers who won't ask for it, and I agree. So just know that if a mover DOES require a permit, it's legit. read more

We were forced to find a new apartment and move out of our old apartment because the owners were going to sell the units off as condos. SUCKS! The whole building was given a 60 day notice and I'm sure we could have taken some sort of legal action but most of us just found a new place and moved out ASAP. Because of this, there were multiple people moving out every weekend and we weren't very organized when it came to scheduling time for the elevator. The guys from Carty's did a great job moving all of our things even while having to share the elevator with another moving company. It was also very easy to make an appointment with Tommy, the owner. Gone are the days of paying friends to move by buying them pizza and beer afterwards. Ahhh, the days of youth. Now that we're older, I fear that getting friends to help me move will now cost me lunch for everyone and their aunt at French Laundry or the friendship itself. Therefore, a less costly alternative would be to just hire professionals. But which one to hire? Thanks to all the other yelpers who wrote in, I got a good idea about Carty Moving. I called and booked with Tommy---he sent me 2 guys and a truck to move me, my cat and a 1 bedroom worth of my stuff from SF to Berkeley. I thought their rate was reasonable ($90/hr) and he estimated it would take me 3 hours. I called the day before the move to confirm a time and got a little worried waiting for the schedule that afternoon, but it all worked out perfectly. Chris and James showed up on time in the morning and moved me within the estimated time of 3 hours---nothing was damaged, they put the boxes in the appropriate rooms, they were friendly, professional, quick and came with fun irish accents (what's not to like about that?) read more

Update: After seeing my review, Tommy called this morning to apologize, and agreed to give me back an hour's worth of money. I feel this is very fair, and he handled it very professionally. So I'm upping my rating to 5 stars, since they were great movers and great to deal with. Thanks Tommy! I used Carty for a move within San Francisco last weekend. They had come highly rated by 2 different friends who had used them recently. My experience was OK- they did a good, professional job of moving, but I feel a bit ripped off. First of all, I was by myself supervising the move. I spent most of the time supervising from upstairs in my apartment. At one point, I noticed I had not seen 2 of the 3 guys in about 15 minutes. I walked down to the truck, and the 2 are sitting on top of some boxes chatting with each other. Once they saw me, they got up and started moving again. Secondly, it's a 2 mile drive from my old apartment to my new one (western SOMA to Lower Haight). I left in my car at the same time they left in the truck- it took me 10 min to drive. 40 min later, they are still nowhere to be seen. I call Tommy (the boss) asking where they are and if he's heard from them (he had not). No word back from Tommy ever, and finally the guys show up 10 min later, with no explanation. I wasn't comfortable confronting them at that point (in case they decided to be sloppy with my stuff or slow down) so I didn't press it. However, I was charged for this "missing" 50 minutes at the end (at $150/hr, that's a rather expensive lunch/cigarette break I paid for). Lastly, I was charged for a 30 minute "travel time" on top of everything else at the end, which was not disclosed ahead of time. Had it been disclosed, it probably wouldn't have changed my decision to use them, but on top of the other issues, it stung a bit. read more

Watching Tommy figure out how to get my Piano from A to B, it's obvious he's not only a mover, but a talented problem solver. I relaxed and let the guys figure out how to do the job, which went very smoothly. I'll be happy to hire Carty Moving and Storage again when it's time to move the piano again. These guys were absolutely amazing!!! They came on extremely short notice -- we called them early morning because our original movers canceled on us and they were at my apartment by 10am. They were very careful with everything and were able to carry 3 huge boxes on their backs at a time as they nearly ran up and down 3 flights of stairs. They were nice, fast and professional. I was so happy with their work that I even gave one of them my old snowboard since he was interested in learning how to ride. I highly recommend them. Tommy and his crew did an excellent job. I had to move on short notice, and Carty was the only company available on a Saturday with less than a week's notice. They were very busy that day and were a little vague about exact times, but they called the day before to confirm a time. Three guys, including the owner Tommy, showed up in the afternoon at the agreed time, and moved everything carefully and quickly. I had all my stuff in my new apartment in less than 2.5 hours, making the whole endeavor cheap at the price - just under $300. I definitely recommend using Carty for your next move. read more

It's a pleasure to watch somebody in action who is really good at what they're doing. Mr. Carty was both grounded and professtional. He must treat his men as well as he treated me too, because they all are really cheerful. Best move ever. If this guy ever gets a bad review, it's probably from a competitor. I've never used movers before.. but after my last move where it took 3 guys friends FIVE whiny hours and damage to my stuff.. I decided to go different this time around. These guys were wonderful.. they came by on time.. packed up all my stuff out of the storage locker and packed it perfectly into their oversize truck. I was worried that my things would get jostled around, but they packed everything just right.. Everything made it over to my new place without a hitch.. and NO damage in 2 hours! I was so happy.. I tipped them a lot extra. The base price was $90/hr for two guys.. I highly recommend them! read more

They took care and wrapped the furniture that needed protection. One star. They didn't do any damage to walls, doors, floors, etc. One star. They always asked where they should put things in our new location. One star. They completed the move in much less time than I thought it would take. One star. So, once again I found myself trying to move at the end of the month, and scrambling to find movers that could accommodate me and my last-minuteness. I called those other moving companies - you know who I'm talking about - and of course they couldn't squeeze me in. (who are these people who schedule their moves so far in advance??) As I moved further down the list, I found Carty Movers, and happily set it up. My move from Palo Alto to San Francisco started off a little rocky, but ended up so amazing that i completely forgot about everything by the end. They came pretty late - no call and no apologies, but were so nice and worked so hard that in the end it didn't matter. The guys were literally carrying boxes higher than their heads to load everything into the truck. Once in SF, they got everything into my apartment - no scratches, no dents, nothing broken (which is a welcome surprise after using another company last time). Probably the icing on the cake came right at the end. These poor guys had been working for hours (we were the 2nd move of the day), and the only thing left to move was the couch. I was standing outside my apartment on the FIFTH FLOOR waiting for the elevator to come up when suddenly I heard some commotion on the stairs... The couch didn't fit in the elevator so they carried it up 5 flights (it was 10pm at this point) and literally did not complain at all. Overall an excellent move! read more

It was cold drizzly morning on Valencia Street. With nowhere to park the moving truck, Tommy Carty and his men had to think fast. "We can risk it Tommy," piped one his crew. Tommy gave the nod and with that began an amazingly efficient moving process... This was our first experience with professional movers. Our main concern was how to manoeuvre our IKEA furniture, assembled at home and now too wide to fit through the front door, out of the flat and down three flights of stairs which led out onto a busy main street. Tommy and his crew arrived on time, surveyed the situation, and moved everything quickly and carefully. The house we were moving into was on another busy street and it was almost impossible to park. Again they risked a ticket to unload our stuff, continuing in good spirits despite the worsening weather. Another plus was it turned out to be less than we thought it would be. After emailing a bunch of people on Craig's List trying to find the best price in town, I hired Tommy Carty. Not only did he compete with other prices I got, but he was available last minute and easy to schedule.
