I would have given them five stars last December when I went to someone named Jessica, who cut layers that were just to die for. This time I went in for a root touchup and a highlights the color came out gorgeous. The haircut, however, was just OK - I made a comment that stylists usually get my layers wrong and bunch them together too much and they need more separation (I'm really not sure what you call that but it's when one layer ends and there are several inches until the next layer begins, so long hair looks absolutely gorgeous styled and cascading down your back). Instead, 90% of all stylists don't listen, don't understand and cut layers that are all bunched together at the bottom. Truly frustrating and of course was the result of my last visit. I will bring pictures next time to try to convey some understanding. read more

Eva was great! i found this place on groupon and my experience was perfect! i am pretty picky since i am a service provider in the health care field. Eva did a great job with my high lights AND cut my hair nicely with not too much off thankfully!! Everyone who came in to see carter seemed to know him well and was laughing it up. Eva asked me if i needed anything or wanted a drink also. I felt very welcomed and they made me feel very confortable even with the groupn. I had a fantastic service done first thing at 10am by Milana. I was reluctant to gamble on a hair appointment (receiving a first-time deal) but she really gave the works! Right away I was warmly welcomed and I felt my opinions counted. Although my request was simple (1-2 shades lighter blonde for summer) she listened and really new her way around my thick head of hair. I was out of there in 2 hours flat which for my hair is REALLY fast. Was so impressed and had the pep in my step to get back to work. I will be back to Carter Vu and I found a new friend! I saw a Groupon now deal for this place and since it is around the corner I thought I would give it a try for a blow out. The website says a shampoo & blowdry is $30. It doesn't say $30 & UP, but $30. Once it was time to pay, the woman, Joyce, told me I had to pay $40. Quote: "We charge more for your kind of hair." I asked her, "my kind of hair?" And she said to me "your kind of hair isn't thin and straight like my hair so we charge more" I am an African American woman with a relaxer. I have never been charged more for being black. When I said that to her, she said "it isn't just because you're black, your hair is not like our hair, so we have to charge you more." I have been going to all types of salons since I was a kid. I start a new job on Monday and as part of my pre-job preparations, I figured a cut and color were in order. A couple of my friends had gone to Carter, so I figured I'd try him. I originally wanted a pixie cut like I had last summer and to even out my color. He immediately pegged me as "low key" girl and said he thought a longer length worked better with my face & how motivated I'd be to maintain it. So he shortened it up in the back and gave it some shape. He was certainly right about my motivation to maintain a short cut, especially since my hair is naturally curly. The color proved to be the real problem. A few months ago I went a really dark, completely unnatural red. He about had a heart attack when he figured out what I'd done. To his credit, he spent a total of 3 hours fixing me up. It took 2 rounds of bleach and one round of color to get it back to a color he was happy with for my skin tone. He was continually patient with me and spent way more time that I would've expected sorting me out. I've gotten tons of compliments on the color. Even my dad who never notices anything commented on it. Thanks Carter! And I promise to never dye my own hair again. read more

I came back for a second time and I unfortunately have to give this a negative review... Normally I don't do this but everything about this was just not ok. I came in and wasn't greeted by my hair dresser until 15 minutes later. I sat down and was not offered water/ tea/ coffee. She started my highlights and hen she ASKED ME to separate the tin foils for her... I was so confused and mortified that I did it, but seriously WTF? This is what I'm paying for! During the entire appointment, she dropped dye all over me, and she was quite rough with my hair. When she washed my hair, she tried to upsell me for a cut too, which I thanked her for but said no. Then upon checkout, she charged me $120 for a partial highlight.... So not only did she make me do part of her job, but then she over charged me (it says a partial costs $74-104 on their price list). Writing a review on behalf of my girlfriend. She called this place and made an appointment with her groupon. After scheduling an appointment, they called her back days later to change the appointment time, telling her that her scheduled appointment was now unavailable. She didn't have the other two times available that they requested... They also informed her that Michael, a stylist there, would not accept groupons. Slowly and surely, they told her off. This is one of those places that treats groupon people with disrespect. I'm not a big groupon individual, but here's a tip to businesses that deals on groupon- Know what you're doing when groupon sells your products and treat those people with respect. Also don't be rude to anyone who's trying to use your business. Basically, I have the same complaints as everyone else's yelp reviews. They don't actually do keratin, but offer another product that he tries to sell you on instead. Almost bought the half off depot coupon; glad I didn't because I had just had my hair highlighted somewhere else and the woman who was going to apply the alternative product thought it might mess up the color. At least she was honest, which I truly appreciate. He then ranted about the color of my highlights--too dark apparently in his opinion. Trashing another salon's work is so very unprofessional. Sell me on what your salon can do, not on your uniformed opinion of what another salon did. I asked for dark low lights because color fades so quickly from my hair. Maybe he's a good hair stylist, but this was a waste of my time (if I had known they didn't really do keratin I would have gone somewhere else) and a bad experience. read more

I had seen a groupon deal (or living social? crowd cut? They're all starting to blend together) for this place when I desperately needed a haircut. Unfortunately, I missed it but decided to go anyway after I saw all the rave reviews (I have no idea why yelp has filtered 50+ reviews for Carter but I highly suggest going through them). First thing I have to say is that I love LOVE that they have online booking! Considering the salon is named after Carter, I decided to have my appointment with him. I never know what to do with my hair, have no idea what looks good on me so I'm always on the lookout for someone who doesn't care that I have no sense of aesthetic direction (and can do a good job). After assessing what I do for a living and how much time I spend on my hair he gave me the PERFECT haircut! Absolutely loved it. On top of that, he said even though I missed the coupon deal online, he'd still give me 50% off (apparently it's half off for all newbies anyway). After raving about my hair so much, my boyfriend decided to try him out too. He was a bit wary as he doesn't believe men's haircuts should cost more than $10 but whoo! He has never looked so hot after getting his hair done. Being a guy and needing to get his hair done more often, he's recently gone back and I convinced him to try Alina out... unfortunately we weren't quite as impressed with the end result. I heard about Carter Vu through Bloomspot.com, another Groupon-spinoff that plagues my inbox with multiple deals-of-the-day. This deal was actually good, however, and I desperately needed a haircut, so it was a no-brainer and I purchased a voucher instantly. Not only was the salon less than a mile from home, I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to make a weekend appointment with only a couple days' notice. The salon itself was small, clean, and neatly decorated. They were appropriately busy for a Saturday morning and the telephone was ringing off the hook, no doubt due to the fantastic deal offered on Bloomspot (and hopefully former clients eager to return for more services). I was greeted promptly by name and asked to have a seat while my stylist finished up. They were running a bit behind, but I didn't mind because it appeared as if the clients were delighted with their new 'dos when all was said and done. The only potential "issue" that I saw was that there wasn't a designated receptionist and the stylists had to continually abandon their stations (and clients) to answer the telephone. Joyce was my stylist and was extremely efficient, giving me exactly what I asked for in addition to a wonderful head massage at the shampoo bowl. Another bonus: their shampoo chairs are extremely comfortable and don't leave you needing a neck massage after having your hair washed. First and last time ever. The hairdressers were rude and behaved like they have a 6 months waiting list to get an appointment. And even if I don't take that into account, the hairdresser lady who was snipping my hair obviously isn't even half the standard of a good hair dresser I can get back in Asia. Have you ever been to a salon that makes you stand while they cut the length of your hair? Well this is my no.1. No head massage when they wash your hair. And I thought this is deem necessary. Or else I can just buy my own conditioner and wash my hair at home. The point is I'm not just paying for an end product. I'm paying for service as well and I'm not getting it from here. And I'm no professional but I believe conditioners are not supposed to be applied on your scalp. This place obviously had their own school of thought. I asked for my hair to be trimmed and layered. And how this woman did it was another shocker for me. And maybe the technique is different but I just want to make sure this is what you're expecting if you do choose to come here: they trimmed my hair when it was dripping wet and they layered my hair when it was still dripping wet. Again, I'm not an expert but I've gotten at least 50 hair cuts before... Never have I experienced someone layering my hair when it's still wet. How can you layer it when it's clumped together? How? And to say that I was done being surprised would say the least. They still asked me if I wanna come back to highlight my hair after this... Gosh how did you think that I was going to come back? As long as I live in Atlanta, I won't let anyone other than Carter touch my hair with color. I get compliments on my color all the time, and love the way my hair looks. It seems a few people have had issues with services bought through discount voucher sites and such, but as somebody who has been using Carter for 4 years, I can attest that he's completely committed to his regular customers. I've made believers out of several friends, and even out of my somewhat follicly-challenged boyfriend. He gives great discounts for referrals (both to the new customer and to whomever referred that person), and he does a much better job on both my cut and color than the fancy salon I used to go to when I lived in Manhattan that charged double what he does. I can't speak for the other employees there, but Carter is the real deal! read more

I started going to Carter Vu Salon after moving to Atlanta in 2011. I found the salon through Groupon and have never looked back. There has definitely been some turnover at CVS - the first three times I went there I had to get a new stylist because the one before had left. After the third time that happened, I started going to the owner, Carter, and I finally found my perfect match! He understands exactly what I am looking for and takes the time to make sure my finished product looks fabulous. The salon itself is small and there are only about 4-5 patrons in there at a time, which is nice if you are looking for a calm, relaxing day at the salon. I believe they have soft drinks, water, and wine, but it is not regularly offered so maybe they don't do that anymore. They also have the comfortable hair-washing sinks which don't require you to snap your neck in two to have your color washed out. Kimberly also does a great job of massaging your scalp and giving you a nice relaxing rinse. I also love that they do not aggressively push hair products on you as you are trying to check out. The prices are on par for other salons that I have visited. I will always suggest CVS to anyone looking for a new salon! read more

I've been going to Carter since Sept 2011, and I always look forward to my time in his chair. Before Carter, my husband suggested I go to a new stylist after I got a haircut he considered "not hip enough." Carter strikes that right balance of a styles which are appropriate for a working mom, but he would never let me leave looking like a newscaster or soccer mom. His cuts are more hip than that. Plus, he keeps me laughing the whole time I am there. I have been on a work deadline before and worked on my laptop in his chair. He was very cool about it and just worked around the laptop. Once, he even gave me a ride home from the salon, because I was having car trouble. (I can't promise that level of service, but I lucked out as it was a rare slow day for him.) I also like that his cuts grow out well. Carter's cuts have staying power. So, go get your "Vu 'do." Just not so many of you that I can't get an appointment. ;-) read more

I first found Carter Vu Salon on Scoutmob. I have very low-maintenance hair, so I like trying out different places if there's a discount offered. As soon as I walked in the door, I was pleasantly surprised to see the fun atmosphere! Everyone was extremely welcoming, especially Carter himself. I got my haircut by Milana and it was a wonderful experience! She was able to give me the exact style that I described to her and fully blow dry it in less than an hour. We had very similar hair (black, long, layered), so she was able to really understand what I was looking for. She was also extremely knowledgeable about what works best for everyone and I was able to gain a lot of insight/tips from her in a very short amount of time. Although I was using Scoutmob, I felt like she still gave me her best service which is definitely appreciated. I ended up giving her over a 50% tip because of how pleased I was with the results and service. Honestly, I've always hopped around salons and usually only get about 2 haircuts per year, but I have a feeling I'll be seeing Milana regularly now :) Thanks for everything! read more

Crystal is fantastic! Also, I don't know what people are saying about it being expensive. Yes, I got the Yelp discount deal and everything, but my price before the discount was only $160 for a cut, partial highlights, and blowout. That's actually about what I've paid before in Greenville, SC and Charlottesville, VA - much smaller markets. I'm quite picky about my hair and have had some bad experiences with stylists in the past. Crystal did a wonderful job of making me feel at ease, and she understood exactly what I was asking for! I do recommend bringing a photo of yourself to show what you want, if you're a new client. I like my classic hairstyle and I always want the same cut and color combo - and it helped to show Crystal exactly what length I wanted (because I'd let it grow out a bit longer than normal when we moved to a new city!). read more

I visited Carter Vu Salon for the first time yesterday for full highlights. I saw Carter, and can only recommend him. He did have an assistant working with him to help with the foiling as I have a lot of hair. He guided her the entire time & made sure she was doing what he wanted. I would not of felt comfortable with her doing my highlights without his guidance. Now, Carter did an AMAZING job. I have been getting my hair highlighted blonde for well over 10 years now, and this is the BEST my hair has ever looked. He is so passionate about what he does & it shows. I finally found someone who truly knows how to do a blonde's hair and do it RIGHT. I personally do not want any yellow or golden tones in my hair, and he made it happen. AND it use Olaplex which means were were able to get my hair to that super light, white blonde without damage, which is seriously incredible! I am taking off one star due to the price. I paid $240 for a full set of highlights (no cut) and blowout. My hair looked amazing, and I DO think the price was fair the the incredible work he did, but on the website it says that a full highlight is $130. I understand I have a lot of hair & my color required a good amount of work, but I find the prices on the website misleading, and therefore unprofessional. I am not a happy customer and will not go back.... 11/19/2011- I am STILL growing out the horrible haircut I received from Alina - DO NOT buy the half off depot deal unless you are cool with having messed up her for a long time! I started going to Carter's salon about 2 years ago after moving to Atlanta. The search for a new place is always the worst, but I was so pleased after going the first time (at that time I saw Alina), I haven't thought about going anywhere since. As a new customer, I used a 50% off deal -- but I have to say, even his full-price services are incredibly reasonable. The quality of cut and color I have received here is impressive. I'm now working with Gabriel, who always gives me a great cut that grows out well. He's also great with highlights and I really enjoy being in his chair. If I'm in a bad mood when I go in, I leave with a smile on my face. Let's be honest. Finding a great stylist is a chore. These guys are great. I personally feel welcomed by Carter each and every time I come in despite him not being the one who personally does my hair. He takes great pride in his salon. I bought the Groupon Now deal for Carter Vu, wanting to find a good place to chop all my hair off to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Making the appointment, I asked if they would know how to cut hair to donate, but when I got there, the stylist was horrible! I had Tammy (I think) - the asian woman. She took the rubberband off the ponytail so that the hair was loose when she cut it. Needless to say I sent a note with the hair to Pantene asking if the hair was still usable. Strike 1. I came in with a picture of more or less what I wanted my hair to look like. My hair is naturally pretty curly and I clearly mentioned that I wanted chunky layers and my hair to be as long as possible so at least I could still put it up in a ponytail. She did not listen to any of this and gave me a haircut that made me look like a 70's soccer mom. Strike 2. Not only that, but I definitely could not put it up in a ponytail and she royally messed up because I told her my hair was curly (which she saw also when I walked in) which would poof up into curls with super short layers. Strike 3. So done. At the end of the disaster haircut, I told her this is not what I wanted and she proceeded to argue with me that she knew hair and the haircut I gave her a picture of was what she did. Strike 4. Officially pissed. To top it all off, she said I owed her an extra $10 since the haircut was $50 and I had a Groupon for $20 off $40. Ridiculous. I gave myself the day/night to cool off and called the salon first thing the next morning and asked to talk to Carter. He told me to send the picture I showed her and then he called me back and told me to come in. He did fix my hair, but I still am not in love with the haircut since it's just not what I wanted. While it was a nice gesture, he did not give me any sort of refund and didn't really let me get a word in edgewise when I told him about how I was treated by the stylist who argued with me when I told her I didn't like my hair. Not sure if I will go back, since salons are a dime a dozen - this one wasn't at the top of my list. First of all Carter Vu is stuck up! He was in the salon when I went he doesn't greet customers or even talk to them unless you are paying him for service. Second complaint - Carter Vu doesn't take groupon! dont have a salon named after yourself and advertised on Groupon and not accept it as payment! When I called to make an appointment, they told me that I could only do so with Lydia, who appears to be the only one at the salon who takes groupon. She has only been there a short time from what I can gather. Lydia was okay.. - I would not say she was fantastic but she was not terrible either. Just your average - which is a problem because I can go to a lot less expensive salon for better service and better hair cut. She did also make me stand to get my hair cut, like some other reviews which I thought was odd...but it did not bother me. read more

It's just hair people! I'm never too worried about hair. It will grow out, it can be recolored. It's kind of a pain to drive to this place. I waited like 5 minutes to turn left into the shopping center/parking lot because there is no turn arrow...so come early. It's up on the second floor, with a bunch of other mini suites. I passed it my first time. Been here twice since this fall. What first drew me in was the Half Off Depot deal they had which was for cut and partial highlights for $65. Read the reviews on every salon that Half Off offered, and Carter Vu had the best. I made an appt hoping to get Carter himself, but instead was Alina. No biggie since I was getting a great deal anyway. I got a trim, and added some layers, so not much there changed. For highlights I had always gotten blonde, and asked what Alina suggested. She said that since it was fall red would be good. Well what was supposed to be red, turned more of a darker orange. Not, what I was hoping for, but it was different. I should also mention that I paid extra for some sort of hair treatment so that my original blonde highlights wouldn't peep through the red highlights. I didn't think it was necessary, but okay..I figured she would know more about hair than me. I wasn't sure if I had wanted to come back at the end of the service (I like to let things soak in), but Alina handed me her card and said if you make an appt now you get 50% off next services..and I was sold. Yes, I'm that easy. After a few washes of my hair, I noticed the color started to fade more and more. I also noticed that my blonde highlights started to show through. I wasn't happy with the fact that it washed out so quickly, but at the same time i liked it better when the red turned into a more browny/blonde color. Oh, and let's not forget I paid extra for this not to happen. The second time I was there, Alina remember me, which surprised me in a good way. I told her about the red highlights I got last time faded right away, and she told me that that was normal. I got another trim all around (trying to grow my hair out), and my bangs cut shorter...so not much change there. But this time I decided to go for blonde highlights since I wanted to match what was in the rest of my hair, and she told me that it wouldn't fade. I was nervous about the blonde because my highlights had turned into a dirty blonde..not blonde blonde. I did tell her I wanted to match the rest of my hair. So as she's doing the highlights..I notice she's only doing the roots..which is fine, but my thought was how is the color going to match perfectly since my highlights originally were washed out? Let's just say I was right. Well, I'm blonde on top..like really white blonde. I can still see some of my dark roots from where she didn't highlight this time, but did last time. And let me mention that I'm not Caucasian, so it looks like I'm trying to be. Haha. I don't think I mind the hair that much though. That's why it's still a 4 rating. And I didn't have to pay anything extra the second time. A normal cut and highlight is $135, and so with my half off it came to be $65, which is not bad at all! Alina is very sweet, and friendly. I wouldn't mind seeing her again There's only 2 other stylists there (besides C), and I'm sure with all the rep Carter has, they have to good right? Went in for the groupon, won't go back due to the service. Not only did I feel very judged and uncomfortable by the stylist that did my hair, but she cut way too much off. Given I have very unique hair that's thick and curly, she laughed when I told her I wanted a short trim and said no you need more. I took her recommendation but should of known better. I left feeling embarrassed and upset. Not a friendly salon and definitely will be going elsewhere for a hair cut. read more
