I never review airport food, because it always seems like it's a scam, we all know it's waaayyy more expensive than food anywhere else, and the taste tax is pretty intense. Basically, I cringe at having to pay for any food or drinks at the airport. I'm making an exception for this place, because it's literally the best airport café I've ever been to in any part of the world. But as a disclaimer I have never been to any of the chain locations outside the airport. The service is great, the atmosphere and small corner feels removed from the intense activity in the rest of the airport, and service was great and quick. I was super surprised at how tasty the tea and chai were. And the egg and potato burrito airport, priced and size, but so tasty I would absolutely buy again. This review is for the Cartel Coffee shop in the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in Terminal 4 C Gates. I liked the atmosphere of this place the second I saw it--kind of punk and bold. The cashier was patient with me while I ordered and ensured that they had what they needed for my order. I first ordered the potato and egg burrito, but he checked and they were out. I ordered the egg and cheese croissant instead. It was warm and the croissant was so flaky and crispy! I wish they did had a burrito or croissant with a meat protein, but this was a good breakfast option. For coffee, I got an iced gingerbread cappuccino. I realized I asked for an iced cappuccino after I ordered, but they were able to make it to my surprise! You can taste the gingerbread spices that were nicely balanced with sweetness. It was creamy and icy, a well-done iced coffee drink. They do have a small counter with stools, but it's close to the pick-up counter; so it's not ideal seating. This is probably one of the cutest airport coffee shops I've seen yet- located in the Phoenix airport. After a super early morning flight caffeine was much needed, and Cartel Roasting was a whole vibe. I got some kind of honey cinnamon latte based on the baristas recommendation and it was exactly what was needed to revive me. Also got a breakfast burrito that took a few minutes to be made so it was hot, fresh and delicious. I was lucky to have a gate next to Cartel Roasting on a recent flight out of Phoenix. I bought a fresh bag of coffee beans, Blend Forty-Eight, a delightfully smooth medium Colombian roast, and was pleasantly surprised to receive a free drip coffee with it. I enjoyed the drip coffee and have been savoring the coffee I bought since I arrived home. I had a bit of a wait for my flight, so I bought a cappuccino shortly before I boarded the plane. While more of a small, strong latte than a true cappuccino, it was exactly what I was looking for- potent, bold, but still smooth. This is exactly the kind of coffee shop I love visiting at an airport. Service was fast. The coffee was delicious, and what better souvenir to bring home than a bag of freshly roasted coffee to enjoy the following week? I'll definitely stop by again at a Cartel Roasting location the next time I find myself in Phoenix. read more

Located in terminal 4 near the C gates, this place has a great selection of fun and unique coffee drinks, especially for it being located in an airport! There was never much of a line either, and everyone working seemed to be moving quickly to get all of the orders out! They had grab and go items too. The Mulling Spice Cappuccino is what I decided to order and it did not disappoint. I was a little worried about the fall flavors clashing with the coffee flavors but it was perfect! So delicious and strong too! I would definitely visit this location again if I happen to be in this area of the airport. read more

Cartel has never been a #1 fave for me, but I totally appreciate the local spots at sky harbor and a change up from regular airport Starbucks. Had a morning flight in Christmas and needed coffee and food do this ended up being perfect. I got a pomegranate ginger espresso tonic which was refreshing but still seasonal, and a potato poblano burrito. I liked how the burrito was crispy outside and that it was vegan! Salsa was good with it too and my order was ready on time. Good option for an early flight! read more

Oh my gosh?! I have been missing out some incredible coffee in Terminal 4 (C gates!) I'm so happy I've finally given Cartel Roasting a visit! I ordered an iced vanilla latte and was advised to try the egg & potato burrito. The burrito takes about 10 minutes, to keep that in mind if you're rushing to your gate. With that said, it's delicious! It's the perfect size for before a flight, and I like how it's a little crispy on the outside too. The star of the show though was the latte. It was made to perfection -- just the right amount of creamy and sweet. If I could have a latte from here everyday I would. The staff was super kind. I was traveling solo with a baby and instead of setting the food/drinks on the counter to be picked up they delivered it to me. So sweet and very much appreciated! Can't wait to come back next time I'm traveling to/from PHX :) read more

Super friendly staff. Line can get long, but worth the wait. Splurged for a sweet indulgence this morning: The CCL. Holy sweetness... it's like a liquid dessert. Slurped I'm down in just a few minutes. I typically don't drink coffee, so I suffered from uncontrollable caffeine shakes, but it was worth it Cartel serves "Numilk": both oat & cashew... I tried a steamed cashew milk which was pleasing. Updated review: the poblano-potato burrito is the first decent bit of food I've had in PHX airport. It's fresh and flavorful, and that is not true of most things at this airport. My only complaint would be that the grilled tortilla falls apart as you eat it (a usual hazard with burritos) and they don't have plates/spoons. Matcha latte was consistent with last time, I'm glad they have an unsweetened option. read more

Found myself at Sky Harbor this fine afternoon, and needed a bit of a pick me up! I enjoy Cartel and though the line is usually long, found it to be almost nonexistent today! Ordered a chocolate croissant and an iced chai latte with cashew milk! I was given a normal croissant by mistake, thought I'm sure they would have fixed it, I wanted to get to my gate. The chai, though very tasty and creamy with the cashew milk, was so warm, I'm not sure if the milk had not been opened, but it was more like a hot latte. They have lots of offerings from burritos (breakfast all day!) and grab n go sandwiches and snacks along with their pastry case. I'm sure I'll give them another try and to enjoy visiting them at their traditional shops in the valley. read more

Had a pretty unfortunate interaction with the baristas today. Asked for a flash pour over with one of the beans listed on the pour over menu and was pretty promptly told that they couldn't do that but they did have it on cold brew. I tried explaining that I enjoyed those sort of flavor notes as an iced pour over instead of hot and was told that it would be watered down and then again told it was on cold brew instead. I said that I just preferred iced pour over to cold brew and went ahead and got a Cappuccino instead from the specialty menu to avoid further argument. After that, one of the baristas turned and whispered to herself pretty rudely (obviously meant to be towards me) that cold brew and flash pour over are practically the same thing (if you know anything about brewing methods you'll understand this isn't the case.) This is a joy for me to come to this shop whenever I'm at the airport because I always want to avoid large corp. coffee if I can and to support small business, and I will continue to do so, but I think there needs to be training for iced pour over if there is none or customer service skills need to need to be re-evaluated, because right off the bat they made me feel pretty dumb for asking for it iced. Still great coffee nonetheless. read more

A coffee shop that is not a major chain, woot woot!! I know Yelpers love Starbucks,but I am bucking that trend. Atmosphere - A typical restaurant space in the C Gates of Sky Harbor. They have a family style high top tables. Only draw back with them is that there is no power at the tables. Pro Tip is that just across from their business is another high top table with power. That is where I sat after I received my coffee. Food Drink - Pour Over with their Papua New Guinea Roots AX, aka PNG Roots AX. A pour over is a slow process so plan for a wait. I had the time this morning. Breakfast - I had a berry pastry, it was a great sweet treat for my morning. Service - It was slow when I ordered and the cashier was very helpful. By the time I found my spot across the hall the place was hoping. Future - I am not a fan of the airline in that terminal, but if I am here again, I will be having some coffee from these guys. read more

I just had a big cup of drip coffee, it was just above warm and sour. It was one of the worst cups of coffee on my life. This visit was saved with one of the best cookies I have ever eaten! The Cowboy cookie at $4 should have been good, but it was far better then that. Jam packed with oats, fruit, nuts, and chocolate, this cookie was perfection. Barista does ask if you want to leave a tip on credit card as you aren't allowed to touch the iPad . My breve latte was velvety and smooth . The Machiatto was tiny though and not as good . It was too strong so we had to add self serve cream which was cold so it brought the coffee temp way down . It was fun nice to try this coffee location though . Got a small drink and a breakfast burrito with an absurd sticker price (but it's also an airport location, so I was kind of expecting that). The hot chai latte with oat milk was good but definitely on the sweeter side (not as spice forward as I expected). That said, it was still a very good latte. The breakfast burritos are supplied by a local vendor and are just heated up (so there's no substitutions allowed fyi), and there is a 10-15 minute wait for it to be heated up (so keep that in mind if you're in a rush). read more

Stopped for coffee on a layover here, since we wanted to try something different besides a chain coffee shop. I was excited since there was matcha on the menu but it wasn't the best. Good flavor but it wasn't mixed properly so I could immediately see the matcha powder floating around as soon as I got the drink. My husband ordered the CCL (cold brew with coconut almond cream and vegan caramel) and it was a very different flavor. The cream was overpowering and didn't quite taste like strong coffee so if you're into creamy drinks this one is good for you. Service was great though and I'm glad to be able to support a local coffee roaster. read more
