My brother got me hooked on Carousel Candyland's popcorn. I've been walking around kahala with my friends for a decade now and I've probably passed by this place a million times. Problem is, I don't like candy. WHAAAT? I know, I'm a weirdo. Maybe that's why I should be a dentist (*note to self: incorporate this into my dental school personal statement). But I would go in with my friends every now and then, especially when sour belts were what all the cool kids had in like 4th grade and then in 6th grade when gobstoppers (aka jawbreakers) were the super cool thing to bring for snack. But back to 2012. I don't know what candies the "cool" middle schoolers are obsessed with now, but I'm sure they can find it at carousel candyland. I will forever be returning for the buttered popcorn with lihing powder.....yum!! I was even strongly considering smuggling popcorn from carousel candyland into the movie theaters. I don't really understand the prices. I think it's a lot cheaper to buy popcorn and a packet of lihing powder (that is displayed right next to the register) separately. p.s. although they accept credit cards, there is a minimum dollar amount you have to buy in order to use your card. read more

Wow what happened to this place?? I remember coming here when it first opened and when it was located at Ward way back when. I got their popcorn with sour cream and onion and it had no taste. I could not even see the sour cream powder. The popcorn used to be drenched in powder with lots leftover on the bottom of the bag. Now it is like they put 1/2 teaspoon or something. Their popcorn also used to be bigger, but now it is like the ones you can pop yourself at home. Walmart and Don Quijote now sells a lot of different flavored toppings for popcorn so do yourself a favor and pick one up and pop your own at home. Another turn off was the workers. They were really unfriendly and had no personality at all. It seemed like customers were bothering them whenever someone paid. 2 stars for the different snacks/candy they carry. In the 1980's, I fell in love with cheddar cheese popcorn when I discovered it at Right On Popcorn in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center. When they closed, I learned how much other people love their popcorn too. For years afterwards, people would inquire for them. I lost count of how many disappointed faces I witnessed when informed of their closure. I am on a quest to find cheddar cheese popcorn as fluffy, crave-able & addicting as the one I remembered. AS much as I love CC, I wish they stepped up their customer service! There is no greeting, no acknowledgement, no offer to assist. Not offer to purchase a reuseable bag. I did it on my own. We hardly come out here but we always knew the popcorn WAS good. While visit g the apple store we stopped in for a snack. We ordered the three cheese blend and an icee with ice cream. The popcorn was a disappointment as you can see.....where's the flavor? They totally went cheap on the flavor and you can totally see in the pic. The icee was supposed to have ice cream but we don't know where it is. The price for their items is NOT worth it. There's many other places you can get better popcorn and icee from. The smell of fresh popcorn will pull you into this candy shop and take all of your money. Just kidding but it will pull you in. If I'm not mistaken, this is one of the last candy shops in Hawaii. They used to be everywhere but not anymore. I personally love the jelly bean wall. Watermelon and bubble gum are my go to jelly beans. Who doesn't like a store filled with candy?! I know that I love it and I'm not even a kid! They have so many candies to choose from! However note that you need to use a different bag for certain candies. It must be weighed separately, so you cannot just go around putting all the candy that you want in one bag. The last time we went they had a lot of empty candy containers. I'm not sure if they haven't had time to restock due to summer and the kids all stopping by for treats. To be a kid just one more time....... My mission on this recent visit was to look for M&M's to be used as favors at an upcoming party I'm hosting. The colors I was specifically looking for (for lack of a better example) are similar to the Punahou School colors. Thankfully, they do have a very extensive selection of M&M's, and I was just relieved they had what my friend and I were looking for. We had calculated we needed 33 oz. of blue and 16 oz of yellow to fit the party favor jars we had purchased. Since we had pre-determined our portions, we looked for a scale to use. Simply put there wasn't a scale available for customer use on the salesfloor so we went to the counter to ask one of the workers for help and she willingly obliged. She was quite helpful and she actually filled candy bags and weighed them herself. And just for everyone's info, the price for M&M's is $13.00/lb. Unfortunately, I didn't take take the time to carefully look over their candy selection, but it looked like they must have had every kind of popular candy out there plus they have icee drinks and popcorn too. This wonderfully delightful candy store is located in the Kahala Mall Shopping Center between Reyn Spooner and The Compeat Kitchen and across from Banana Republic. Anyone who has ever been to Kahala Mall knows exactly where this store is located because of their constant mouth-watering smell of freshly popped popcorn drifting out towards the Mall patrons walking by as well as their happy bright pink and white sign contrasted against their black and white checkered floors. And who can forget the sight of the immense amount of colorful candies that attracetively adorn their entire store. This is easily any child's (and some adult's) dream walking into this large candy store that is filled wall to wall with colorful jelly beliy jelly beans, all types of gummy candies, the artistic rock candies, regular and mini-sized m & ms, the always fun and fizzy pop rocks, a multitude of chocolates, licorice and malted candy to name a few. It's so nice to be able to buy only the specific flavors that you want of a certain candy rather than a mixed bag at your local grocery or drug store. For example, I like Jelly Bellys, but can't stand some of their awful flavors such as buttered popcorn, mango and licorice. This way I can make my own mix of cotton candy, toasted marshmallow and watermelon. You get the idea. I love this place! No matter how old you get, you always feel like a kid when you walk into this store. They have everything you want when it comes to a sweet tooth. I must tell you that me biggest downfall is the smell of the popcorn! You can actually smell it when you first walk into the mall. It smells better than movie popcorn if you ask me. You can get the plain, butter, jalapeno, etc... there is a wide selection or you can combine them all if you like. I will definitely make more trips here. Came here during a out of the blue stop over at the mall after my son's doctor appointment at Kapiolani. This was our first time coming to this store. There is A LOT of choices of candy. Chocolates, gummies, jelly beans, M&M's, etc. With that being said, my 5 year old was in candy heaven!!! Their prices are decent. I think was around $3.80 per 1/4 pound for the regular candy, and the M&M's and jelly beans have another price. We ended up with $4.98 worth of candy. I thought it looked like a small amount, but my son, husband and myself were able to share and satisfy our sweet tooth. The only thing I didnt like was there was no worker on the floor to help. I was a little confused as to which utensils to use and if I put my used utensils in a specific area. However, there were 2 girl workers behind the counter. But here there is something different from all the other candy stores I've been to: freshly made mochi crunch popcorn. Ever had Hawaiian Hurricane popcorn? Usually it comes in a package in the grocery store, ready-made or as a microwavable package mix to do at home. At Carousel Candyland, freshly popped popcorn is mixed with flavors and add-ins of choice such as butter, cheddar, li hing, sour cream, furikake, rice crackers, salt and vinegar for a custom bag of flavored popcorn. But now that my tastes have matured for Cold Stone Creamery and other decadent items, candy unfortunately took a back seat. I have since rediscovered the simplicity and deliciousness of candy via Carousel Candyland. The offerings are plentiful and they do have what most people love, which is the chocolate stuff and the gummy stuff. My favorite would be anything chocolate covered. Well, not anything, but I guess anything covered in chocolate would taste good. Candy stores have an iconic standing in society today, while they may be an unwelcomed addition to your waist line, they are awesome to fill the void where stress from daily life can coincide and collide with a violent response. It's basically like this:Look for what you want, scoop what you want or can afford, and pay. Just like self serve gasoline! lol. Like some retail establishments, you pay by the weight of the product (ie some yogurt places). The last time I was here was a good 4-5 years ago. Haven't been here in ages but if you are looking for a place to load up on some "illegals" to take into the movie theater, this is the place. I love being able to pick out one or two piece of a candy, so that instead of one box of snow caps, I have the equivalent of one box of candy, but I really have 20 different candies!! Ok, lets get honest, I really have more than one box of candy but being that it only occurs 5 times a year, I say "It OK!!" Yay!And here is where I think of the fun that comes with this store. Though my friend's small child is in love with the Elmo and other stuffed animals. I also used to visit this place outside of pre-movie stops, when I didn't want to cook dinner and wanted to instead be a t.v. couch potato. WE LOVE THE POPCORN AT CAROUSEL CANDYLAND! Our usual is a large furikake mochi crunch!! They put butter to make the furikake stick as well as a good amount of kakimochi. It reminds us of movie theater popcorn so for movie nights at home, we usually just pick up a bag of this popcorn. Walking in the door, there's a distinct smell of fresh popcorn (Yup they do this also) and candy. The shelves are well organized so it's easy to zero in on your favorite treat. I've been coming here ever since my dentist recommended it. (BTW, I have been getting quite a few cavities fixed since then...must be a weird coincidence.) Im not much of a candy eater, but all the colors in this place always get my attention:)...Upon entering ur not greeted as the register is to thr back of this store. There was a young man n an elderly lady working the area. They didnt really acknowledge or say Hi as we approached the register. Altho the young man did help me find the right flavoring lollipop ii was looking for..Ordered a small popcorn bc im a sucker for GOOD popcorn, never asked of there was anything else we needed or anything at all. Right before tying up my popcorn bag ii looked at it n asked if ii could have extra butter, the lady looked at me as if ii was inconveniencing her:(( which ii didnt mean at all. Had ii had known she was making my popcorn ii wouldve said because ii wasnt finishing order while she was making it... Correct me if im wrong but ii just might be to spoiled at the way the kiosk makes it in Windward mall n for the price. Kahala Mall never smelled so good without Carousel Candyland. That smell of freshly made popcorn just pulls me to it like a bug to a shiny light. Their popcorn is bomb but you really can't go wrong with popcorn unless it's burnt. They also sell... Icee, Cracked Seeds, and your typical candies that you can buy by the lbs. or pre-pack. The gf loves the candy here and I don't need her thinking getting multiple little bags instead of one giant bag means she didn't get a ton of candy! I love coming here to when I'm trying to decorate desserts, stuff goody bags or trying to stuff my tummy with yummy sweets. This has been my go to candy & popcorn place since forever. The kinako popcorn is a MUST!!! Soooo delish!!! I can eat the entire bag. 4 stars only because flavored popcorns are a bit pricey but worth the price for a treat every once in a while. Also love the big fat gummy bears they have that come in a bunch of different flavors, sold by the pound. Mixing the flavors in one bag is dangerous, you can eat them all just walking around the mall. I am a Haribo gummy bear fan but these bears are yummers.
