Their greatest specialty is attitude; bad attitude. Unless you're a Tour de France contestant expect to be talked down to. I was doing centuries on a French road bike before most of the staff was born. I know bikes and I know bad service. These guys are jerks. I decided to give them one more chance after dealing with their attitude on a repair. Was in the market for a higher end bike. Thanks to their 'tude, they lost a sale on a $6,000 bike to Indy Bike Garage, whose staff blows Carmel Cyclery away. We live by a trail and ride bikes moderately frequently. This is our go-to place for bike repairs. A big bonus is that they're located off of the Monon Trail, so they're easy to get to by bike. One of our bikes needed some extensive repairs, and from start to finish, Carmel Cyclery was very easy to work with. They called us to make sure we were OK with their quote for the repairs that needed to be done, and the price was fair. They seem to be consistently busy, but despite that, we got the bike back in a decent time. Also, I don't feel like they try to upsell or recommend fixing things that don't need fixing. That's why we visit them for pretty much everything bike-related now, from getting tire tubes replaced to tune ups to more involved things. They also sell lots of different bike gear, so this will be our place to get bike gear from now on! read more

I wish Carmel would get another cyclery. I bought an old fixie bike on FB market for my adult son to ride down to the track. I paid $50 for it, but back wheel was out of true so dropped it off at Carmel cyclery to true it and was quoted $25. I was called a few days later and he said it was ready and he mentioned one of the spokes was broken. When I went to get it my charge went from $25 to $54.28. When I asked why he said it became a "major wheel true."?!?? So was on the hook for more than I paid for the bike. He would not budge on charge, but I felt like I should have been called and asked if I wanted to continue for more than double the original estimate. Not happy. read more

Unless you are a serious cyclist - they don't want anything to do with you. Was shocked by so many positive reviews but those people but those must be written by "professional" cyclists. The other one star reviews tell me it's not just me who thinks this - the people who work here are so rude and unhelpful. Recently tried to buy kids bikes from them and they literally wouldn't sell them to us. Before that, I went for a new tire and they were so mean and bothered by our request. My neighbor just went for the same thing and told me how rude the workers were. My brother in law (who is big into cycling) has noticed this too - he says they are nice to him only because he knows a lot about bikes. Terrible staff. Go literally anywhere else. read more

Woohoo! We just got a bike for my husband and are so excited! The people here are wonderful and were really adapting to quarantine guidelines. They were bringing items out into the parking lot for customers to pick up and try out. We browsed their website beforehand and called to make sure they had the type of bike we were looking for. They answered immediately and told us they did. When we arrived, there were two other people waiting in the parking lot, and the staff were bringing out exactly what they needed. They were being super friendly and efficient. We sat on the curb and enjoyed the sun until it was our turn. We asked for a certain type of bike and they brought it out for my husband to test ride in the parking lot. He loved it immediately. They only had that type of bike in one color, so we went with it. Heads up that this shop is small, so I'd recommend calling ahead to see if they have the type of bike you're looking for. They adjusted the bike for him, attached a drink holder, and told us that there's a free 30-day adjustment warranty if we wanted their help post-purchase. We're excited to go on lots of local bike rides now! Thank you! They wheeled a couple of bikes for me to try out and have a look at... I have to mention I had looked on the website before coming and calling them to make sure they were open, so I already knew the style of bike I wanted. Alex is excellent; knows his stuff and very detail oriented; I took my 20+ year old bike to have rear tire replaced, & he did it while I waited; my husband attempted to take off the tire but accuse loosened the gears so had to take in the whole bike. $20 too cheap for labor considering he spent an hour on it, ensuring bolt were tightened and brake didn't rub on the tire when done. I ordered a mountain bike from Specualized and had it sent to Carmel Cyclery. I received the bike in a timely manner, but when I picked up my bike yesterday, I informed the guy that I was new to mountain bikes and had no idea about any of the functions or proper setup. It's my understanding that the bike is supposed to be sent to an authorized dealer so they can set the shocks and seat height properly for the weight and height of the rider. This didn't happen at all. The only advice I was offered was to set the seat height to make sure my legs didn't fully extend when pedaling. I won't return to Carmel Cyclery for any future products or service. read more

We were visiting Carmel and forgot our water bottles for our bikes. While on the Monan we spotted Carmel Cyclery and stopped in to see if we could get one. When we walked in we asked the man if he had water bottles for bikes- he gestured to a rack and said- they're over there. Not one had a price on it so we asked about the price. He said, rudely, they are between $8 and $20. He then went back to whatever he was doing. Another employee, leaned over the wall and kindly- and quietly told us the prices. At this point I was annoyed but still fine. While we continued to look around we had several questions about phone holders and racks. He wanted nothing to do with helping us. Then another family came in. They had an appointment to have their bikes serviced and had rode them there. The teenage girl asked about their appointment. The man rudely said, your appointment is tomorrow. She said she was aware but they had to bring. He told her to bring them in. She clarified, bring them into the store? He said, Yes...bring them in. So rudely. She asked where in the store...He says...as condescending as he could, "BRING. Them. To. Me." I turned and looked at him. Are you kidding me? He was so rude. He made several other rude comments to the other family. I told my mom we had to leave. We bought our water bottle (just because we needed it) and left. We were prepared to purchase several other items to add to our TREK bikes but opted to find a new place. That man was a jerk. The next day I called there to ask if they rented bikes- he said they do not. So I asked if he knew any place that did, and he replied not that I could help with. I would NEVER go back. I got the impression the owner was who we dealt with and he needs a new job. Or at least an attitude adjustment. read more

We ended up purchasing two bikes that we have been using all summer and have actually bikes back to the store to buy some accessories. I'm no Karen... but had to post so nobody else goes here! Took my bike in to get fixed two months ago and it worked great when I got it back. They said they tuned it up and charged me like 80$. That was short lived and the problem came back. I took the bike back and they said they'd look at it... called me back an hour later calling me a liar, saying that it wasn't the same bike. I went in and some guy said the bike was now fixed and I could take my bike. I got home and tried it, still broke and they did nothing to the bike. Terrible customer service. Very rude and disrespectful! Called me a liar. I will never go back here or recommend this place to anyone. read more

This place used to be great and the place to go to for bikes, accessories, tune ups, etc. I'm not sure if there's been an ownership change or just employee turnover, but the folks here have been downright rude. My wife placed an order for a part a month ago, followed up recently and said they have no record of the order. The employee groaned when asked if he could look into it a bit. Mind you, we have bought 2 bikes from here in the past. Additionally, I needed a tube replaced (a minimal procedure), which they told me would take 3 weeks. I went to Gray Goat the same day and while they said typical service lead time is 3 weeks, they can do a tube replacement in 15 minutes. I don't usually like to leave negative comments about a business. But in this case, they've earned it. Please know that I have been a customer for years, so this wasn't just a "first time in" customer issue. I had my bike tuned up by CC recently, as I do pretty much every year. I had a broken spoke &, naturally, the wheel had a bad wobble. I pointed this out when I dropped it off. Fast forward 5 weeks when I got the bike back (I get it, it is busy season), but the wheel still had a slight wobble to it when I picked it up. I didn't say anything at that time (I know, shame on me), but on my 1st ride at about 7 miles - another spoke broke...bad wobble returned. Back to CC again, & was told I needed a new rim. Ok.....fair enough, I guess, but maybe this should have been caught during the first inspection by the mechanic?? Perhaps I was overreacting.Ok, I swallowed it & just went with it. Fast forward another 4 days, I get a message left on my phone that "we didn't have the same (black) rim in stock, so we just put one on that is similar - its not black, it's neutral (aluminum) color" & to let them know if I would rather have them order the right one.....!!!!!!!! I called back immediately & spoke to someone other than the person that left me the original message & said, " umm, yeah, I would rather have the same color/kind of rim that my other one is, so yes, please order it." Well, guess what surprise was waiting for me when I picked the bike up!!? Yep, mis-matched rims. I told the guy that brought the bike out, that it was supposed to have the same (black) rim, & he just looked at me as if I was speaking a different language. I was not happy, obviously, & just said "forget it, I want my bike, you've had it most of the summer". Oh, of course the rim cost me another $75 on top of the $115 tune up it just got....but I digress. Carmel Cyclery just lost a customer & my recommendation. They didn't give a crap about me or my bike or even thought to make anything right. I mean, was it really too much to ask for matching rims? Who puts on a mis-matched rim & THEN calls to see if it's ok!!? Maybe it's just me...!! read more

If it weren't for their great location right off Monon Trail and the popularity cycling has gained during the pandemic, I really don't know how this place would make any money. I called them in May because I was interested in purchasing a bike, and they pretty much told me not to bother showing up. The following day I purchased a bike elsewhere. Unfortunately, since then, I have had flat tires on two different occasions. The first time I went to Dick's, where they fixed the problem in 15 minutes or less. The second time I went to Carmel Cyclery--big mistake. They told me it would take ten days to put in an inner tube. Very unhelpful shop to a single mom with back problems. Wanted help putting on a hitch bike rack and two different guys alleged my cotter pin wouldn't work for it. Refused to help me put it on. Tried to sell me a $60 one. Went down the street to Auto Zone and the guy put it on for me with a wrench in just a few minutes. I've said it before and will say it again. I have supported this store for years. last week I scheduled my first time up with them. During setting the appointment I was made aware of pricing for tune-up is only labor. Seemed fair to me. it was explained to me they would call with any parts needed before work would be done. I never received a call at all, not even to let me know it was finished. My wife asked me about it and I with confidence said "Hun they will call when they need to" Well to my surprise after her call the bike was ready for pick up. She was explained that the tech that worked on it had to leave early that day and must have not had a chance to call me. They never so much explained to her work done or final invoice cost. So I figured they would call the next day and I went about my way. Well no call the next day or the day after. So I then started calling them. 3 times in a day with no answer. So I loaded up and just went to the shop to see what was up. When I arrived I was approached and ask what help I need immediately, "Here for a pick up" , We started at the front computer which was giving the tech fits, so he jumped to the shop console and without asking me to follow him asked me my name 3 times from across the room and then asked me to spell it. My name is Clayton, seems pretty easy to me, maybe he should have asked me to change check out locations before yelling across store. (Petty maybe but still not a very polite attitude towards you clients. And I come in feeling pretty ignored.) He announces that my bill is a little over 200 and starts ringing me up. Now this is the part we're things went south for me. I asked the tech if it was policy to just install parts during a tune up without ok'ing parts. This is we're the techs toned change severely for the worse. (To the best of my recollection) "Well when you take a car to the dealership for maintenance." I cut him off right there and told him I've never had a dealership just add parts without calling with full quote breakdown. Unless they have been advised otherwise. He didn't like being cut off and I didn't like that they didn't immediately care about my concerns. From there I felt totally bullied and couldnt get a care of a answer from this cocky tech. All that should have been required for my end was a apology for slipping through the cracks immediately upon presenting my concern. This individual was beyond rude and actually told me this convo is over if you want your bike back pay the bill and leave!! Seriously! I never once when in that shop, did I say the bill was out of line, or the work they had preformed was not needEd. They replaced one set of shifter cables that were only about a 1 1/2 years old that I thought might not have needed it. But with a phone call to me before work was preformed probably could have been explained to me before pick up. i was even asked by the tech in question "I don't know what to do to do to make you happy?" about 3 times he asked through this petty argument. All 3 times I replied in a form of (You could give a crap about not contacting me for the work done and to fully explain your policy for tune up work) No apology ever came. No true policy for handling tune ups ever was explained to me. Now I will say, my bill was very reasonable for work preformed and after one ride so far seems like good work. But in a industry with so many competitors one would think customer service should be at the forefront of their particular service. When getting back home I reviewed status online and reviewed several of the exact same complaints. This shop is not going to change. The 2nd tech that was working yesterday, that was in the back ground seemed like this is a normal behavior from the tech I was speaking to. To the point of a smirk on his face a couple of times. (Like what good entertainment for the day) I'm wondering if the owner of this establishment needs to address the issues of this employe. I know he has worked there along time and just maybe he shouldnt be a the counters any more talking with clients. I will no longer recommend them (and had for years) or ever return to that store, and I'm a loyalist and it really kinda bums me out. Just my opinion read more

How did I not know this place was here? I'd taken our bikes to The Bike Line for a couple of tune ups and minor repairs, and was charged several hundred dollars. I absolutely was in shock. Fast forward to THIS year, when we needed a flat fixed on my wife's bike. We went to Carmel Cyclery, and it was like stepping into another world. Friendly, helpful, and they seemed to REALLY appreciate our business. We were taken care of in no time for a VERY reasonable price. Went in today to pickup a couple items, was greeted at the locked door by an employee saying "whats up", he reluctantly let us in and seemed irritated we wanted to look at bikes telling us to shop online, he was a total jerk the whole time. Heres the thing, if you dont want people shopping in your store then close, dont treat potential customers like sh*t. Bought chain degrease and got out as we were obviously unwanted. Went to Gray Goat Bicycles where the door was unlocked, sales people were extremely friendly and ready to assist, people were even test riding bikes there. I have been bike industry for over 25 years. Retired out of the biz but still have my logins to the distributors for parts. I needed a wheel laced up. I checked with the distributors and the spokes and nipples I needed were in stock. Dropped it off at Carmel CYCLERY and and after 1 month and numerous phone calls blaming it all all on covid that the parts are not available am picking up my carbon rim and hub. I just checked with distributor and the parts are available--not a place I will ever do business with again. read more

A great big Thank You to Carmel Cyclery for their kindness and generosity. I'm from out of town and had ridden my bicycle to the Monon trail from my hotel and had an accident that disabled my bicycle. I walked my bike to the Cyclery and although they were very busy they very kindly worked on my bicycle and repaired it back to ridable. The gentleman who worked on the bike declined my offer to pay for the repair stating it didn't take that much time. Whether it had cost me or not I was very happy and appreciative for the kindness and help. I was able to ride the Monon trail and get back to my hotel without a problem. I try to support local for just about everything I buy. I buy from my local camera shop, so I tried to do the same with my bike. I waited for close to 10 minutes for someone to at least acknowledge me. I have a broken brake on my bike and I had a question and wanted to buy a new one. After being there for too long for having 5 people working there, an older couple walked in the door and a young man ran out of the back, met them at the counter and asked how he could help them. I Said out loud to myself " *#%* this place, they just lost my business" I am home now and ordering the part of Amazon. They get zero stars from me and I won't ever go back. Hands down the best bike shop in town! I called in to see how much they would charge for a few repairs in my bike and they were incredibly reasonable. The mechanic was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and managed to squeeze in my repair at the end of the day right before close. They have a wide selection of Specialized bikes for all types, as well as a large array of accessories to go along with them. I will never go to another bike shop after stopping in here! read more

I lost my bike shop -- T3 Multisport -- and I called around to find a new one. I was going to go to BGI, but I decided to have my bike put together here (from parts, all bought online) and the guys are super cool to deal with. They sell bikes and rent them, too. Got my new bike and took it for a spin and it's nearly spot-on. They did an excellent job considering I'm brand new to the shop and all I gave them was a hunch of how big I am and a bunch of bike parts in boxes. I have not purchased a new bike for myself since I was a kid when I bought one from a Western Auto store on lay-away. When I stopped in the Carmel Cyclery I was impressed with their huge inventory and the responsiveness of their staff. The sales person, Scot, recommended a bike to just fit my body and my riding needs. He was very knowledgeable about riding and bike mechanics and accessories. Although I paid quite a bit more than I would have at a big department store, I think it will pay off in the long run to have a bike that fits me properly.
