Had my bike tuned up in March. Looked and felt like new. On second ride there was an issue with the derailleur. Brought it in and John got right on it. Had it fixed in less than 30 minutes. He was so apologetic for the issue because he tuned up the bike. He didn't need to be that apologetic but it shows the level of care they have at Matthews and their guarantee stands. Especially for a guy like me who rides a good bit but doesn't like the mechanical stuff, Matthews is top notch. Also got a fitting last year from Mike and it was well worth it. read more

Overall, it's a good bike shop, but there were some issues. I went there to have my bike tuned up for the summer. The mechanic was attentive and explained the various repair options, but I felt that the service could have been a little faster. The repair took a whole day, even though I had made an appointment in advance. The seat replacement was very quick and hassle-free. However, I didn't really like the appointment system, because I had to wait longer than I expected. It's a good place, but perhaps the speed of service could be improved. read more

I purchased pedal straps and when the guy put them on, he said I'm unsure if this is how it works, but we're gonna make it work. OK cool. I'm riding on the Monon today and the strap falls off which means I fall off. I take my bike back to Matthews and Clayton said that's not their responsibility. He said that when I left the bike shop it was my responsibility, no sympathy no empathy no sorry man that happened nothing. He by Far has the worst customer service I have ever experienced in the store. I got called into work and made it to Matthews with five minutes before they closed. I understand that they can't fix the bike, but I said can you at least help me find the screws? I don't have any screws. It fell off. He said no we're closing in two minutes. After a long weekend of frustrations with other bike shops, I was directed to Matthews Bicycles. On February 6th, 2024 I called asked if they provided long term demo bikes. They do not. However, unlike other places I talked to, the gentleman at Matthews explained why they do not, why other places might not, and made real recommendations. About two months ago, my husband and I decided to pick out new bikes as another way to get outside and be active during the pandemic. We stopped in to Matthews Bicycles and our experience could not have been better. We were helped by Mark. Since we had never purchased bikes before, we were completely lost. He explained the basics of how bikes work (much more complicated that I thought), asked questions about where/how we would ride, and helped get us the right size bike (which I didn't know was a thing). He also set us up with helmets, a water bottle holder, and little plugs to help add air to our tires. Finally, he recommended a bike rack for our car AND helped install it so we could get our bikes homes. Overall we spent probably two hours with Mark and honestly, it flew by. Mike Dowling was our salesperson. He is so knowledgeable, kind, patient, understanding, and taught us a lot about new bikes. I had a basic cruiser bike. After foot surgery and my knee being drained the bike was not an option for me anymore. Mike after learning about my leg issues, he had me try an electric bike. It was great and fit my needs great. Unfortunately, we have to get all new appliances,, so the price of the bike wasn't in the cards. He had me try a bike that was a 7 speed, it sits up high, it is a step through bike, very comfortable, I test drove it and bought it. The price was in an affordable price range for our budget. Recently had my wife's nice but aging bike serviced. My wife loves the bike and it's still got a lot of miles but it's a fine line between getting it back into top shape and buying a new bike. The service guys discussed the options with me and how to get the most bang for my money and keep my wife on a bike she loves. Drive train had a lot of wear so they suggested investing there along with trueing the rims and adjustments. It may seem unusual to review a bicycle shop on the basis of a wheelchair repair, but such is the case with my review of Matthews Bicycles. As nearly anyone who is an "active lifestyle" user of a wheelchair will tell you, it is quite often much less expensive and much quicker to get your flat tires and wheel repairs done at a bike shop. I'd been utilizing a bike shop on Indy's Northwestside, but they sold out to a bigger operation that no longer met my needs. As I live only a few minutes away from Matthews, I finally gave them a shot. Boy, was I glad I did. Matthews, first of all, carries a wide variety of tire sizes and was already quite familiar with the notion of repairing a wheelchair tire. They weren't remotely phased by it and immediately explained their fee structure for both the items and install. As my hands don't work the greatest for fine detail work, I usually have installation done for me. Whereas my previous place had frequently become frustrated with wheelchair tires that can be difficult to deal with, the folks at Matthews have never shown a grimace or uttered a curse word while dealing with the wheelchair. That may seem like a little detail, but it's really refreshing to have someone seem to enjoy their work. On only one occasion have I entered Matthews that they did not have the tire I needed, and they ordered it and got it exactly when promised. They've also helped me explore options for better efficiency of my wheelchair tires and they're always quick with an offer of a chair while I wait. They've also made it clear that I can pull up to their service area and honk, a step that would eliminate my need to climb out of my car. While I've never done this, it just speaks volumes about their willingness to go above and beyond for customer service. I have several friends who use Matthews for bicycle purchases and repairs and they also speak highly of the establishment. Whether you're a bicyclist or a person needing a wheelchair tire repair, Matthews is definitely one of your best options. read more

paid $400 for a Haro for my son, took the bike back for the maintenance tune. Shortly after we purchased the bike the material came loose from the side of the seat, when we asked about it they said that the bike has been laid on its side, my son keeps that bike in his room, takes great care of it, he had one wreck and it scrapped the hand grip and pedal, no marks or any sign of damage anywhere on the seat, today my son was at the bike/skate park in Franklin, he popped his tire tube, he walked it to Grey Goat bikes downtown, they replaced his tube, no big deal except the guy told him his tire was on backwards (tread reversed) and that it could not be changed now, we purchased this bike already assembled from Mathews , now makes me wonder if they really know bikes at all! read more

Scott was as helpful as they come. The start to our road trip to California couldn't get any worse and he was an answered prayer! Our road trips typically and frequently were 8-12hr drives with 30$ bike rack hauling our two road bikes. Well not this time, driving through Windy City had whirl-winded our champion 30$ bike rack into a baleful looking lean-to. Upon further assessing it, i noted the bolts had become dislodged and stripped! Thankfully we noticed this before our bikes flew off on the interstate and killed someone! By now it was storming terribly. We hastily went to the closest Dicks sporting goods and correctly installed a new 70$ bike rack. What we thought would be an upgrade from our 30$ rack turned out to be pregnable by the elements. Every 10 minutes we noticed it was malpositioned and the straps had loosened. We stopped 5 times before I noticed wifey, on the verge of tears. Scrambling, we decided to go to the closest 5 star review bike shop. Cue, Scott - Bike shop specialist extraordinaire. Scott hooked us up with a Saris Bone bike rack. He helped us set it up and gave us some extra instructions for troubleshooting. Even more, he assuaged our angst and reassured us this rack would be safe for everyone on the road. Anxiety went from 10/10 to 2/10 then. We had been plagued with worry, confusion and perhaps a bit of misfortune. Well now we are halfway to California and we couldn't have done it without the help of Scott at Matthews Bicycles. read more

I have been a customer for several years. I love they way I am treated every time I go in there. I never feel pressured or stupid for not knowing something. They take time to explain things to you. My most recent visit was for service. I had taken the bike twice to someone else and they said nothing was wrong. They were able to identify the issue and show me what was wrong in minutes. I was told it would be 2 days before fixed. I was called within 4 hours that it was complete. No surprises delivered and problems fixed for a reasonable fee. This shop is amazing! They will literally spend hours with you to make sure you find what you need. And they will answer a million questions as well. They have been amazing whether we are just buying inner tubes and tires, a horn for a kid's bike, or a full bike. It doesn't matter, they are SO kind and courteous every time. And they are great with letting you test out the bikes as well! I had to try several before I finally settled on one. But it is perfect for me, so I'm happy they took the time to let me choose. They are also really fast when they are installing things like kickstands or water bottle holders. They did all of mine in about 20 minutes. They also were kind to my 7 year old when he asked incessant questions (as 7 year olds are wont to do). Overall, this is just a lovely place. I've purchased my last two bikes here. There store is nowhere near me, but I will go out of my way for service like this.

I've been out to this store four times since May and never once have I encountered a shred of condescension or indifference. All staff members have been helpful to me, and patiently answered my questions (which are sometimes kinda "dumb") about road bikes. I rode commuters for years and am going to upgrade (on a budget) to a road bike so I can go farther faster and more comfortably. Listen up ladies (and cyclist guys with a lady you'd like to get started in the sport): This shop has the best selection of women's road bikes in the city, and they have all the brands and models in every size. I've had stores try to sell me a bike that was far too small for me or far too large just because that was what they had in stock at the time. This won't happen at Matthews. I went in and confessed, up front, "I am not going to buy a bike today, I'm just beginning my search," yet I was willingly put on multiple bikes in all price ranges so I could get a feel for different components, materials, shifter styles, etc. I was there for nearly 2 hours and left sweaty because most of that time was spent in the saddle. I keep going on about road bikes, but there are kids bikes, mountain bikes, comfort cruisers, and even touring bikes at this shop. They have 2 stories of BIKES!!! And they're put together and ready for you to try! I almost don't want to mention this next part...there's a 50% off rack. All the time. It's where I got my $70 padded Specialized bike shorts for $35. Yowza! Always good deals (like Amazon good) on accessories and apparel on that rack. A couple weeks ago, I did my first organized ride in Brown County-I went 30 miles. That may not sound like much, but 30 miles in Brown County feels like 60 on the Monon. I decided last-minute (the Wednesday before the Saturday ride) that I was going to change out the handlebars and stem on the men's road bike I've been riding. I called all over the city, and the shop that had the parts, was affordable, and could get the work done for me by Friday was Matthews. I dropped my bike off Wednesday around 6:30pm and got the call Thursday evening that it was ready for me to pick up. New handlebars, new stem, new bar tape, labor to put it all back together, and a front light came to right around $140. Very pleased with how much better the ride feels and also with the speed of service. I'll be going here from now on for all my tune-ups too. Update January 2014: I did buy my road bike here, because I was able to get the SAME bike for $300 less than the price at any other local shop. I also bought pedals and a seat (because most road bikes come with crappy pedals and seats) which they discounted because I was buying a bike that day. I went to every bike shop I could find in Indy, poked around when I visited Dayton, OH, Chicago, IL, and Louisville, KY, and I stand by my assertion that Matthews is the best shop in the city and definitely one of the better shops in the area in terms of staff, service, and selection. We continue to have most of our work done here because the turn around time is so fast. My boyfriend's road bike was making a terrible rattling sound, and since he bought it at Performance (their house brand), he brought it back there to be tuned up, cleaned, and "fixed" (adjusted). Certain services are free to customers who buy Performance bikes. After spending nearly 2 weeks in the shop, his bike still rattled and the mechanic told him "that's how carbon bikes sound." That's BS. We called around to various other shops and were told mechanics were on vacation or the soonest they could get to the bike would be 2-3 weeks. Until we called Matthews...we dropped the bike off at like 7pm and got it back by 5pm the next day...NOT rattling. We also witnessed them turning away a wrecked custom-built bike that they couldn't fix and recommending where the poor guy MIGHT be able to take it for repairs. read more
