So bent my wheel on a trail and looked up a few places to take to get fixed. The places most bike owners know aren't cheap and I feel like you are paying for a big name instead of just for the work. Ive passed Bicycle Hospital many many times and they have been in business for years. I had a second wheel so I switched out and dropped my wheel off on a Wed with a gentleman with a beard. He was friendly and said no problem to fix. It was ready to pick up Friday but I didn't go till Saturday. Walked in and the female employee knew I was there for my wheel. Cost me 20$ to fix something I couldn't and would have cost me triple any other place. They must be doing something right to be in business so long. My bike will need a tune up this fall and I plan on taking it here. read more

That is exactly what it is! the ultra talented Charlie Sr, charlie Jr & Jennifer are masters at their craft! They breathe new life into older bikes. Tune up newer bikes & everything in between! They did a tune-up on my ancient bike for much less (and did a better job) than other places I've gone. This is my favorite bicycle shop. I had low tire pressure on my bicycle as well as brakes that needed replaced. The staff was so kind and made me feel very welcomed. This place is amazing! Friendly, knowledgeable, straightforward, and considerate (notably, of my wallet!)! I brought my bike in with a laundry list of issues: -Didn't go down to first gear -Gears were sticky -Breaks worked just alright -Front tire rim was bent from a car hitting it -Back tire had a broken spoke and was bent out the wazoo. Despite all this, they managed to save both tires and make the whole thing feel like a brand new bike! (I wonder if they might have just switched it out and hoped I wouldn't notice ). Everything you would want from a bicycle store. Customer service is the most important and they really do it right here. I brought my wife's 1962 Schwinn in here for a winter tune up and was super impressed with the job they did. Just the way they handled the bike from the moment I dropped it off, was like handling a delicate flower. The bike rides better than it ever did and my wife is very happy. Recently I was back in here due to a front flat on my bike. The same attention to detail and careful inspection revealed the cause of the flat and he recommended a Kevlar strap to insure it doesn't happen again. I was in and out within 20 minutes and had plenty to look at while waiting. Quite a few accessories to look at and then all the bikes. It's not the biggest bike store I have ever been in, but I would say it is the friendliest and also the best! read more

Above and beyond!! I'm a novice bike rider and budding bike mechanic, thanks to Covid. Two weeks ago, I had my bottom bracket unexpectedly fall apart and I was determined to fix it myself, despite my unfamiliarity on exactly how to proceed. I made a couple of trips to the Bike Hospital during the course of the day to pick up assorted tools I would need for the job. I taught myself by watching youtube videos, but I needed some guidance and I was pretty nervous about royally screwing it up. I didn't catch the guy's name (Charlie?), but he made sure I had all the right tools and gave me some really helpful advice on some red flags to watch out for. Thanks in large part to his helpful advice I was able to gain some confidence, complete the repairs myself and get my bike up and running within a day. Yeah, Bike Hospital is a place to buy bikes and have them repaired, but they also are pretty well stocked on tools for you to complete your own repairs. I could have just been handed a bunch of tools and sent away with a "good luck", but instead Charlie(?) was kind enough to tutor me during my visits on proper usage of the tools so I didn't damage my bike. Really meant a lot to me and I couldn't be more appreciative. read more

Absolutely fantastic family owned bike shop. I've had to come in here for a variety of reasons over the years, and the experience is uniformly excellent. They are knowledgeable, but do not treat you as an idiot when you ask basic questions. They can help you find what you need (bike, lock, helmet, lights, etc.) but do not exert uncomfortable sales pressure. Their repairs are well executed with rapid turn around and very reasonable pricing. My wife bought a bike from this place last summer. Recently, she got into a minor wreck and dislodged a few aspects of the braking system. I brought it in for repair, and one of the employees asked me if I had ever brought it in for the 30 day tune up. I said I didn't think so, and to my surprise there was no charge when I picked the bike up the next day in pristine condition. A brake cable on my bike came loose this week and I needed it fixed ASAP. Maybe it was destined to happen just so I could experience fantastic service at Bicycle Hospital. I called the shop and they gave me the perfect estimate of time and money I would spend there. When they fixed my cable, they also tuned up my bike a bit and pumped up the tires which my secondhand bike desperately needed. On the way out, my inner tube happened to burst (that's just my luck). I was extremely fortunate to have that happen at the shop and not anywhere else. In the end, I spent more than I had planned, but the father and son working there gave me great service and advice. I know who I'll be visiting when I need bike repair/maintenance in the future! read more

I called to check out pricing on getting a bicycle I bought assembled and they were $24.99 cheaper than every other place I called. The woman - I believe her name was Jennifer, was professional and full of knowledge. I went to the shop to see what they had to offer. After speaking to Jennifer in person I left with the bike I brought to have them assemble to return back to the store I bought it from. I realized that bike just wouldn't do based on the knowledge shared with me by Jennifer. Oh and that bike stayed in the car, she never knew I planned to have them assemble it for me. I also believe has I brought it in she would have stopped me and pointed out why the bike was all wrong for me. I'm a tall woman and after a conversation with her I knew the bike in a box wasn't going to make me happy. Once I told her what I was wanting, I was able to test ride a couple bikes. That is what really sealed the deal for the bike in a box in my car. She can explain it way better than I can but I can tell you I will be back soon to purchase one of the bike I rode today. I never felt pressure to purchase a bike but after hearing and feeling what I need, it made complete sense. Can't wait to get my new cruiser! Look for me around town. Update: I didn't even wait a week to order my new bike. It was more than I wanted to spend but I know I will ride it a lot more because it fits and is exactly what I want and need. read more

I pass by this place often and the look of the place from the outside didn't impress me, but man, when i went inside i was VERY IMPRESSED with the professional staff and the service they offered. They treated me very well. They provided a high level of customer service. Knowledgable and friendly. I didn't think customer service like that existed anymore. The woman that helped me was extremely helpful and left me feeling that my bike was in good hands and that they were not going to take advantage of me because of my lack of bike mechanics. Wow, I can't say enough good things about the customer service here. I have been shopping for a bike for the last 3 weeks or so for my daughter who is 8 and wants nothing to do with flower designs or Bratz decals, which unfortunately for her come emblazoned on many girls bikes these days. Anyhow, we did find a lesser offender in a Giant brand cruiser that Jenny who worked there picked out for us after asking us great questions about what we might be looking for in a bike. She encouraged my daughter to try it out on the street behind their shop. My daughter really liked the bike. She thought it was in many ways what she wanted in a bike save for it's color (white and violet) and it's few blossoming flourishes. Given her strong reservations on the matter which we shared with Jenny (who by the way was awesome with children) jumped in and completely understood. She showed us the other color the bike came in (a matte raspberry) which wasn't up her alley either. We thanked her and I told her we would talk about the pros and cons over lunch. There was absolutely no pressure from Jenny whatsoever. When I followed up with a call later that afternoon and repeated some my daughters reservations, she said that they could potentially modify it by changing the peddles (to black), seat (to black), and perhaps even the rims (which were violet) and in doing so make the bike a little less "girly"... In the end, after all that, we eventually decided to continue our search but Bicycle Hospital was by far the best experience we had at any of the bike shops we went to in Indy/Carmel and we went to at least 8. These guys will certainly see us again especially since we're currently steering our search to the realm of the far simpler (aesthetically speaking) vintage bike, that I have no doubt will need to be serviced. read more

The bicycle hospital has been in the same location for 32 years. It is run by a grumpy old man who has a grandfather like appeal. He is willing to order parts and equipment for you and is able to handle a variety of repairs. If you want your bike fixed quickly, go somewhere else- normally you must leave your bike overnight here. However, he seems very thorough and knowledgeable. I don't feel like I would get ripped off here. I feel like this shop caters to the average rider instead of long distance cyclists or racers. It would be a good place to take a child's bicycle or get a tune up. read more

I was looking to buy a bike to commute to work and maybe some easy weekend riding. One of my coworkers recommended coming here first because he had good experiences with them in the past. I haven't owned a bike since I was probably 13, and had no idea what I was looking for/needed. I walked in and was greeted right away by Charles. I told him why I was looking to buy a bike and he knew right away what I needed. Being a taller person at 6'5", Charles showed me the larger framed bikes. The new ones were out of my price range, but there was a beautifully refurbished bike that fit the bill. I took it for a test ride and was sold. I also needed all the gear: helmet, lights, lock, etc. Charles walked me through the whole process. He mounted the lights and lock onto the bike for me right then and there. He told me to not worry about filling out the warranty card for the helmet because if there was any issue he would take care of it. I realize having an issue with a helmet may be rare, but the gesture was indicative of the whole experience. When it came time to pay, Charles took care of the tax and kept knocking $5 here and there. I spent a decent amount of money roughly $400, but I knew that if there were any issues Charles would be there for me. He has been working there for 53 years and I'm sure that if he didn't have the right bike for me, he would have sent me elsewhere or figured something out. I can't say enough about the level of knowledge and customer service at the Bicycle Hospital. I haven't been back, because everything works great! Needless to say I will be back whenever I am in the market for accessories or repair. Thank you so much for all of your help Charles! read more

They were nice but you can tell they are only there because the rent is cheap and not a community player. In conversation with my friend, I knew I was right. "Bicycle Hospital is only in my neighborhood because rent and property taxes are low. They have no regard for the needs of the people behind them. Just Tarkington, and it's uppercrust citizens. The place you want to go to get your bike fixed, for a price that is mindful of it's demographic is Freewheelin' Community Bikes on 34th & Central. A tune up is $60, and I believe an overhaul is only $80. A new tire will cost you no more than $15, and a used tired won't cost you more than $10. I can't recommend this place enough! The service is fantastic, and their prices are incredibly reasonable. A friend of mine recommended I check them out last summer and they're the only people I go to now. My old bike needs big love up, but they were not trying to upsell me to anything not needed. They knew more about my 20 year old bike than I can google. Fantastic shop! Great customer service and extremely reasonable prices. It felt like discussing bicycles with an enthusiast rather than a business man. The people here know bikes. I went in ready to spend the money to replace my wheels to accommodate a quick release set up, so my bike would work with my trainer a bit better.
