Carmax has changed, and not for the better! Frequent buyer with Carmax and have purchased at least 6 cars in the past all with no problem. Fast forward to today, we paid 200.00 to have a Porsche shipped in with 41,000 miles. When it arrived, it had 43,000 miles and two bald unsafe front tires. Spoke with a very nice salesmen who went to the GM Ed who offered no solution. The salesman came back to us and in an embarrassed manner relayed "ED said the tires were right on the line and the extra milage does not affect the price". So basically, deal with it. We politely thanked the salesman for his help, and he provided a refund for the car transfer fee. We are very disappointed as Carmax used to be a very honest and pleasant car buying experience. Sorry to say that is no more. Intentionally misleading the mileage and allowing anyone to purchase a car with unsafe tires is obscene. I have read several car descriptions at Carmax with the caption "These tires were not up to our standards, so we replaced them" and they are not going to replace tires that if we purchased the car and went right to a tire shop, they would not let us leave without replacing them. Plus, the intentional misleading of the mileage. Yes, that may not affect the car price, but I will not put 2,000 miles on that car in 4-5 months. That is almost half a year worth of driving for me. Needless to say, if Carmar is going to act like every other dealer then we will be taking our business to every other dealer. read more

My experience over the phone was great I made an appointment to come in for today the lady I dealt with her name was Monica she was very nice when I went in today for my appointment I dealt with a guy named Bob he was rude from the gate and although I had all the paperwork I needed that was asked upon me to bring I didn't have my proof of address which I told him I would bring in he never showed me the car and he was very discriminative this guy's name is Bob older gentleman in CarMax Reno I would say that all in all I might have had a good experience if I dealt with someone else but that is who I got stuck with and I wish I would have dealt with anybody else other than Bob...... Rat feces! I returned a car bought at carmax Burbank because I found feces and nutshell in the engine bay. Carmax Reno put it back for sale, with the rat feces still in there - I witnessed it as I was buying the car next to it. The second car has three chips on the windshield, the biggest one spot in the driver's line of sight. Upon buying 3 salesman swore the windshield would be replaced. Now the service department refuses to, because it meets their standard. This windshield will crack in 3 places at the first frost. The police will give a ticket for having a defective windshield directly in the line of sight of the driver. Don't get scammed by Carmax marketing campaign, it's reputation is quite the opposite: It is famous for giving the lowest appraisals in the industry ($300 for a 2004 XC90 with new tires) and resale your car at auction They will never write a repair order before selling a car (they scam you into believing that they will repair things after, 3 salesmen did on this instance) The salesman makes about $150 in commission, carmax is expensive but cheap It is nothing else than a used car lot without any added value Their service cannot be trusted to even clean a car (the car with rodent feces had a milk explosion in the back and on the windows, cereals in the seats and crumbs in the center console), let alone inflate the tires before delivering the car to you (all 4 needed air) or even make sure that the option that you are buying with a carmax fancy marketing premium is actually in the car (bought navigation, someone had stolen the $600 OEM SD card and let me off the lot like so). Furthermore they over filled the oil. Rat feces and rodent damage are carmax standards, but also cracks in the windshields in direct line of the driver sight. Came to CarMax to look at cars with my boyfriend and maybe I'm just unaware of the process of CarMax and how they do business there. But tbh, I feel any car dealership should have some kind of customer service from beginning to end. My boyfriend and I were pretty excited to go into carmax for the first stop during our car shopping experience, but once we came and most of the employees were just sitting at desks and stared at us. A guy came up to the front desk and just gave us a look for a minute or 2 and just flatline ask "can i help you?" And then we just said we wanted to look at cars and the guy said "oh yeah go Ahead and go back" meaning going to the lot . My boyfriend and I were kind of confused and were kinda just waiting for someone to help us but it seemed we had to just do everything on our own. We went back and looked at cars all on our own , not one sales person out there and if there was they were just driving around in the golf cart. After we finished we went back in and it's like no one wanted to work and just were sitting at the desks. Not one came up and asked or offered help. You would think someone even just ask or say how it was or if we found a vehicle but nope no one. We basically left with not one person we could say helped up. We had a truck shipped from Washington but when it arrived there were title issues with NV and we had to wait over two weeks for it to be resolved. I thought about buying a different truck but this one had all the options we wanted, plus I planned on trading my car in, which saves on sales tax when done in the same transaction so we waited. The truck was finally ready so we went in. Paul Alvarez was the rep to help us and he was GREAT. Super nice and sincere guy, no pressure tactics. He stayed past his shift to help us close out the deal. Justin, the GM, was also very helpful in resolving some issues that could have prevented the deal from closing that night. I got a really fair price for my trade in, and saved almost $2k on sales tax on the new purchase. We also got a great APR with Carmax Finance Auto - super competitive rate in line with a credit union. While things weren't smooth in the end Carmax made things right for us, and we are very happy. Don't buy from these guys. I bought a car with cash four months ago and now I can't get rid of it even though I don't need one anymore. They didn't give me a title and they claim it will now take 6 months to get one. They won't buy the car back, they won't let me return it, and without a title I can't sell the car to anyone else. So that cash I wasted on the car is unavailable until I supposedly get the title many months from now, and I must continue to pay insurance and registration on something I don't want. My banged up 2001 Ford Taurus with nearly 190,000 needed a axle repair/CV joint repair, not wanting to put anymore money into the car and not wanting to drive a car that sounded like pennies in a blender, I was desperate to get into a newer car ASAP. Not having perfect credit, I was worried about getting car loan and a loan with a decent APR. My friend had just purchased a Prius from CarMax about a month ago and she had loved both the CarMax experience and her car... So I figured I at least give them a try. After doing my research on my car preferences, I went in on my only free afternoon I would have in March with a determined Ford Fusion or bust goal. Walking in you are great by a greeter who answered my questions on where the Ford Fusion were located. After looking at the cars I picked the car I wanted to test drive... I love the fact that CarMax has a no hassle policy, it was refreshing to be able to look at the cars at my leisure and when I was ready, I had to actually go and hunt down a salesman. Michael H. ended up giving me a test drive and was my salesman for the financing process. Michael was a very likable and easy going individual. He really loves CarMax and working there and his enthusiasm was clearly evident in his 'sales pitch' and demeanor. He was thoughtful, considerate, and made the entire experience much more enjoyable. Between my trade in and cash I was able to pay $1000.00 down and get a monthly payment that I could afford. The offer that they made me on my old car was within the quoted Kelly BlueBook Price listed for a trade in, so I was happy with what they offered me and the fact that they took car of everything regarding the sale of the car. I do wished the the APR was about 2% lower, but considering that I was worried about getting a loan and have heard stories of double digits APR's in some of the other local car dealer in Reno, I was ok with the APR I was offered. My new car is a beautiful black 2014 ECOBoost Ford Fusion. It looks almost brand new both inside and outside. It had less than 10K miles when I purchased it. It came decked out with all the "lastest technology" and CarMax gave me 3 months of Sirus free. CarMax also detailed and cleaned the new car before bringing it out new me and offered me bags to move my personal belonging from the old car to new car. Lastly, I have a warranty on it for 50K miles/60 months, coming from spending the last 3 years with my car needing non-stop repairs I am very happy. Also, CarMax shared a full vehicle history with me and share the Ford Recalls that had been posted regarding the car/parts. Lastly, CarMax has a fairly simple but cool app that allows you to keep track of your car's maintenance, recalls, pay your loan payment (or set up reoccurring payments), and store your vehicles important paperwork. Nothing fancy, but a nice closing touch. My only suggestion to CarMax would be to have had the Keyless Entry information (Factory Reset Code) written out. I had to spend time researching on how to get it to work, but I did get it to work, so it was only slightly irritating. All in all, I was able to go in and out in, buy a beautiful new car, trade in my old car in about three hours. I would definitely recommend CarMax. read more

I spent months researching before I bought my car June of last year from Carmax. Not even 24 hours after I drove it off the lot, the check engine light came on. It was under warranty, and the fuel inlet valve was replaced. Shortly after the check engine light reappeared. After a year of replacing valves, replacing severed wires, etc. a giant hole in the charcoal filter under the car was discover and $1500 worth or repairs and visits to the dealership to fix all this, my car is finally the way it should have been upon purchase. Horrible experience! We got talked into driving here from Sacramento by sales rep makes Jeremiah who totally falsely represented the 2008 Toyota Corolla. The car had rear end damage, the spoiler was a different color! The interior was so dirty they had to power clean it and destroyed the interior in the process. Well I did it. My old jeep liberty had given me 14 years of fun and reliability but she had seen better days. I had been researching endlessly for my new ride and decided on the Jeep Renegade. An issue with gas tank and a false light out message. I called and left a message since the service center was closed. The next available was 2 weeks and it was still covered. Horrible! We drove up for a specific car. Online pictures compared to the actual car where night and day in difference. The inside was dirty, the seatbelts actually made a crunch sound, the inside of the doors where scratched up, the spoiler was a different color than the rest of the car, and some dents on the trunk. I am fed up with this place and won't ever be back. I wish this place didn't exist because I have to see it every day on my commute. The customer service is horrid and the lack of education on how to enter and complete a credit application with a 1099 status is ridiculous for an establishment this large. I have purchased three vehicles here for my sons and was harassed every single time but never wrote a review. One vehicle that I really wish my son didn't want (Dodge Scatpack) took 8 hours to deliver because they couldn't do simple math on his bank statements. Might I add we had a pre-approval before we arrived but they managed to complicate things in every way they could think of because they are devilish and have personal biases. We had to redo the credit app. The finance company had to tell the tattooed manager "Hey we approved them. Give them the car". I'm not against tattoos. I'm just describing her so hopefully, you can avoid this person who may be having personal problems at home. They were FLAT OUT refusing to proceed due to their personal opinion that my son couldn't afford the car. Well, he left with that car a year ago, and in fact, he is doing a nice job affording it. The very next week, I go in with my other son to get a Ford Fusion he was pre-approved for THROUGH CARMAX over the phone and was met at the door with "He can't get this car because that finance company doesn't approve gig work". My sons are in college but they WORK which is more than I can say for most folks these days. You ought to be elated that I have children who WORK. Again we left with the car because the finance company told them to mind their business and push the transaction through. Carmax and its employees acted as though the finance company dropped the ball and needed their help in making sure we could get a car. I am TIRED of miserable people who have ego problems and feel like it's their duty to be controversial for no REASON. They are calling these types of people "KARENS" and this manager is one of them. She is consistent with her bad attitude or at least with us she is consistent with her negativity. This is the entire tone of this place in my experience. They put up resistance for no good reason. Maybe their hourly pay isn't enough and Carmax needs to increase the worker's incentive pay per vehicle. My husband and I have also test-driven several luxury vehicles that were for me and the vehicles were downright FILTHY. From a filthy, practically new Porsche Macan with visible candy stuck in the tray to a Benz AMG GLE43 Coupe that needed a jump before I could test drive it. I would have kept that ghetto mess to myself as a business practice. Needless to say, I was nervous as heck on that test drive lol. Recently just this week, my son wanted a Camaro and against my better judgment, he was unconvinced that we would again be mistreated and decided to test drive one at this place. I hate the sight of CARMAX but went with him. Well, they looked at me at age 52 years old and his age 24, and told us both, "Don't do anything stupid in this car". I hung my head and gathered myself and even tried to make Sarah feel comfortable by telling her our plans to travel to Walmart, park and look at features then return within the 20-minute time frame. I also told her not to worry that when I test drive a car, I am nervous also and take extra care not to wreck it before I can bring it back. She looked relieved as we pulled back up to Carmax in one piece as she was nervously waiting outside. LMAO! She also reiterated that we had 20 minutes only which was understood from the beginning. Sarah also mentioned that their system alerted her that we were returning customers. I CANNOT with these people but this time we have cash so we are going somewhere else. I finally begged my son not to continually patronize a business that is unappreciative and doesn't want his money! We need to get in control of our wants and make these businesses compete with nothing less than EXCELLENT service. Go HOME if you don't like your job. Also, DO your job specifically and leave the finance company's job to them. Leave my job on what I can afford to me and the banks. Leave what kind of car we should LIKE and drive to us. So, this is purely based off an appraisal I had them do. I have a kbb value of $14,500... they did their "top of the line" appraisal check and gave me $12,000... I also had to wait for the appraisal to come in and the sales guy said the words "top of the line, best in the industry" about 35 times... not even an exaggeration. I then went to the place where I bought my car and got the pin point $14,500 kbb value offer for my vehicle. All in all, the experience was an absolute joke. I was going to sell a car to CarMax. Got a decent online offer. I took the car in with my wife following me in another vehicle. Arrived and my car was "appraised" within minutes. Here is where the problems started. We sat for well over an hour waiting for someone to talk to us. They were not that busy. Finally I went to the business office window to see what was going on. A young lady looked me up on the computer and said she would take care of it and would be right out. She came out and handed me the appraisal sheet which offered less than half of the online appraisal indicating it did not qualify for the online appraisal because of a transmission problem. Now, I bought this car new. It's been taken care of and there is no transmission problem. I declined the offer. I found the "appraiser" and asked him what the problem was with the transmission. He said there was a clunk when downshifting to 1st gear. To be fair to CarMax I was able to duplicate the problem and found it may have a worn thrust mount. A $50 fix and certainly not a problem with the transmission. My biggest issue is the way they handled this. Left sitting for almost an hour and a half. Nobody would talk to us except the office help after I complained. They could have handled this much better. I won't be going back. read more

This is the worst place I have ever gone to purchase a car it took 4 hours .. promises that in writing are not honored . the sun roof worked till we left the lot when we took it back to get fixed they said they had to order parts I had to call them 5 weeks later to see if the part was in yet and they say it just came today . Here is my experience of going all the way through the transaction, and then undoing it at CarMax. I walked in casually on Sunday informally looking at 3/4 ton pickup trucks. They happened to have 2 in stock, a 2006 F-250 Lariat and a 2015 F-250 Lariat. The 2006 was too old for me so I looked at the 2015. It was beautiful - black with a 6.7L turbo, fully loaded and with only 18k miles. All for $52,000 (new it is about $67,000) I thought about it, thought about it some more and then went inside to talk to them. When I expressed interest in buying the vehicle they asked if I'd like to test drive the vehicle and if I'd like an appraisal on my current vehicle if I'd like to trade it in. I opted for both and handed them my keys and my license. A few minutes later I went for a test drive in the '15 F-250 and loved it. It drove well (for a truck of it's size) and was in extremely good condition. After the test drive we came back into the dealership to discuss the appraisal and whether or not I wanted to buy the truck. They came back on the appraisal of my vehicle with everything being up to their standards but offering me about half what I could get private party. This actually made sense to me. The vehicle I would be trading was a loaded 2008 BMW X5 w/ 78k miles. Due to the age/mileage they would wholesale the car, not put it on their lot - therefore the price they offered me reflected that. With that information I realized I was dealing simply with the price of the truck and whether or not I wanted an extended warranty. CarMax is one of the few places I would actually buy their extended warranty. If you read the fine print you'll see that the MaxCare warranty not only covers if you bring it into a CarMax ($50 discount on deductible) or you can also take it to a dealership for your brand. The deductible is also per visit NOT per item which is nice. I noticed that on domestic vehicles the warranty was a lot cheaper than on a foreign vehicle. (in this case a 5 year/100k mile warranty on the F-150 w/ $300 ($250 at CarMax) deductible was $1600 which is pretty darn good. I agreed to give them $30K down and finance the remainder at 2.79%. The financing came back through CarMax Auto Financing (CAF) which offers the most favorable rates if you finance. After all the paperwork was signed they had to fill up the tank and make sure it was ready to go. CarMax actually has a gas tank on site for gasoline but not for diesel. It actually took them longer to get the diesel fuel than it did to take care of paying for the car. Once that was done I was able to drive the vehicle home - good times. Here's where my story differs from many others and I'm thankful for it. CarMax offers a 5-day, no questions asked return policy on their vehicles. You can read it on your contract - it's actually written in plain english and it's freaking awesome. A few days later I did in fact return the vehicle - I realized it was overkill for what I needed (I'll be fine with a 1/2 ton). It was so easy to return it was ridiculous, probably 10 minutes. Wound up buying a 2013 Chrysler 200, and save for a couple of glitches, not too bad of an experience First, the bad: 1) car was sold with a plugged front tire and dirty oil. They admitted the issue the next day, and appt was scheduled the following Monday to replace the front tires and do an oil change 2) the Bluetooth accessories they sell are twice the trial price and do not work with most modern phones (especially the iPhone 6.) You're better off going to Fry's, Best Buy or Audio Express if you need Bluetooth. The good: Financing took 5 minutes, paperwork took 1 hour. Finance rate was the same as a local credit union - wound up going with their in house financing. They also have a lot of vehicles - yes, many of them are fleet or rentals, however, they have almost everything you could want. read more

We were very pleased with Carmax, and our new purchase. We found the car we were looking for a Sonata Hyundai Hybrid, with everything we wanted on it, low milage and in perfect condition. Took a short test drive, loved the car. They appraised our Volvo c70 and came up with a fair price. Our car salesman Ramon C. Was easy going and no pressure. We found Carmax, was honest and fair. My sales representative was very nice and out of all the dealerships I visited, they actually had the highest offer for my car as a trade-in. I never was offered to test drive my car, I wouldn't have bought it. This was my first time ever buying a car, really didn't know the process or what to do. I was alone! I did not feel cared for at all. Sold with mechanical issues, and even a recall that wasnt fixed. Here is my rating and I will be posting all over. I am bummed and said for my experience. I had been trying to get car looked at since 2 weeks after I bought it, service dept couldn't get me in for like 3 weeks, well my car was shaking horrible, so i asked service man I talk to what to do? He said you can take your car elsewhere and we will reimburse you for all service done during warranty, I said okay and what about transmission, he said take it to dealer its under warranty and if cost arise we will reimburse you. So i took my car to Les Schwab for balance and that when the said rim is bent, still haven't been reimbursed. So then took car to Chevy dealer and they informed me that i needs an immediate transmission flush because fluid is so dark its as if car was driven into ground before sold. So I did so, again still havent been reimbursed. Then covid-19 happened, i get it, places closed, the corp office got me in touch with local mechanic to fix bent rim, local mechanic said tires are bubbled and need replaced, took me outside garage to show me my tires bounce in balancing device they have, I drove it and at 55-65 it will get a shake, again was told to replace tires. Carmax ignored local mechanic and never called me back. Well here we are in May, car still shakes, and now my breaks squeak, heater dont work and transmission still acting funny. I finally get in touch with someone in service dept, and I feel she pretended to care, but I feel like I was jacked around. I finally get car in to be looked at. I am told this BS: Breaks had dirt and dust. Well thats not correct because I left with them squeaking again, and my car still has issues like its breaks are engaged, its the calibers are bad, but your "mechanics" say it was dust, so explain to me why they still squeak? oh wait you guys said I dont know what I am talking about, still not fixed. Heating- Okay radiator went bad, fixed. Transmission- Lady in CARMAX service said its just a Chevy thing! no there is something more to a hard shift, still not fixed. Tires- was told by your "mechanics" they dont feel it but other mechanics have and suggest a replacement....hmmm. interesting, oh and still shakes, still not fixed. But I was told car is fixed no longer under warranty because COVID-19 and to figure it out on my own! NOOOOOOOOOOO that wrong!!!!! They say they extended the months of a warranty due to covid- 19, but if you drive for part of your living and went over the mileage of warranty its void! NOO I still have a broken, piece of shit car that needs fixed! They never tell you about the bumper to bumper mileage warranty, they just bullshit and use the selling point of bumper to bumper for 3 months!! I will never buy a car here again!!! Very disappointed with them ... always have to wait when you have a scheduled appointment. Just brought in for oil change didn't check fluids or brakes . Brought car to Les Shwabb to get tires ... my back brakes are 10 percent good need and alignment and need a belt that's way cheaper at Les Shwabb and I'm in Portola which is 2,200 population .. they are better more professional and a much better price .. if you say your going to do something you should .. never going to reno carmax .. but ventura carmax was awesome read more
