Went to this Carmax location twice to look for a car for my son. First time, the guy handed us his card but never came to see if we had any questions. Then when we were walking out and realized we weren't interested in buying a car, he made a quick eye contact and didn't say a thing. We then came back a couple of days later and saw a car we liked. Jonathan Schwerter, a very friendly and helpful young man helped us but when he looked at the computer, the car has been requested for transfer to the Buena Park Carmax. Needless to say, we were disappointed. He said he will follow up on it and let us know in a couple of days if the sale goes through or not. A couple of days later, before driving over to Carlsbad to look at some more Acura ILXs, I thought I'd give him a call to see if he's heard back about the status of the vehicle in Buena Park. I was amazed that Jonathan, on his day off, not only returned my call but also looked into whether the car got sold or not. He got back to me a few hours later to tell me that the potential buyer still hasn't made up his mind. Not wanting to wait any longer, we drove an hour away to Carlsbad and ended up buying a very nice Acura ILX at a dealership there. Based on our experience, the negative reviews were partly true but it depends on the salesperson you get. Jonathan Schwerter certainly gave us a better than expected customer service and we won't hesitate to ask for him if we were to go back to Carmax Irvine in the future. read more

This review is for the Buena Park Carmax service department. I purchased my new (to me) vehicle and on the way home noticed that a speaker was blown and there was a chip in the windshield. When I called to make the service appointment, they could not get me in until after my 7 day return time frame was up. Convenient, right? I brought that up, but was told by the operator that it wouldn't be an issue because they "aren't that mean". Took my car in, they had to order the speaker and turns out that they will not replace the windshield because they already plugged it, so until it spiders they won't do anything else. Supposedly if it spiders in a year or within 12k miles they will replace the windshield. Marcel said that he would have his supervisor call me the next day to discuss this as I was upset. Had I known they would not replace the windshield, I would have returned the car instead of dealing with having to replace a windshield. Then, I was told the speaker would be in on Tues by noon and they would call me so I could bring the car in. Tues at 1:05 I called Marcel in the service department and he couldn't even see that a speaker had been ordered. Once he finally figured it out, he told me it should be in that day by noon... I had to point out to him that noon was over an hour ago. I also advised that his boss never called me regarding the windshield and his response was that he was there and I could talk to him when I had my speaker replaced. Marcel was going to call me when he returned from lunch after 2pm to let me know the status of my speaker... I'm still waiting for the call. read more

So, at the beginning of this process, I was going to be writing an entirely different review, one which had a whole lot less stars. Due to the efforts of two CarMax Irvine employees, my faith has been restored in this dealership, and I will continue to work with them. I bought my 2006 Lincoln Navigator in October of 2013, and as a newly single mom, I relied on the salesperson's assurance of the inspections they make of their cars and the quality of the cars they stand behind. I was also convinced to buy the 150,000 mile bumper to bumper extended warranty on a payment that was already very high for me, based on the financing available to me. Obviously wear and tear on brakes is not included in this warranty, but I was assured that they make sure that the brakes are in great condition, and this shouldn't be a concern for quite a while. Well...five months later, and only 5,000 miles later, a scary grinding sound was coming from my left rear tire. I tried to reach the service department at the Buena Park location where I bought the car, as well as the service department at the Irvine location, leaving several messages throughout the day, and even trying to go through the sales department, but no one returned any of my calls. Finally the next day, I had a friend who has built cars take a look at my tires at work and he told me that the brake pads were down to the metal and I better not drive on them anymore or I would ruin the rotors, which would be not only dangerous to drive on, but very expensive. He said he couldn't believe how worn down the pads were after only 5,000 miles and offered to talk to the service department to tell them the situation. After speaking with several people at CarMax, he was directed to Ricardo Perez, who said he would evaluate the car and look into the situation. Well, after bringing the car in, he said the initial estimate was almost $800! I almost cried. My friend was furious that they were not standing behind their product as they claim to, and we found out that the standards for brake pads that they have to meet are extremely low, and this was never communicated to me. Ricardo agreed that this was a timeframe in which the brakes probably shouldn't have failed so badly, and went to bat for me with his manager, Jennifer Herrera. When I came to get the car and walked up to Ricardo, he told me that Jennifer had agreed to stand behind their product as well, and that they would give me an amazing one-time courtesy deal, which they did! I was very impressed with how these two employees made CarMax look good by standing behind their principles and their products, and I will continue to have my car serviced at this location as a direct result of their efforts. And I hope their managers see this review, as they saved a customer! read more

I had the best experience selling my car here. I posted it on Autotrader and was called by lame people that wanted to low ball me. I went into CarMax and they offered me exactly what I had it listed on Autotrader for. They were quick and everything went very smoothly. Great way to sell a car. read more

My dad was contemplating on selling his truck so I suggested getting it appraised at Carmax. I went with my dad and we checked in at the front desk and said we want an appraisal on a vehicle. They asked a few questions and told us it will take a few minutes and someone will help us with the appraisal. A few minutes went by and Scotty (can't remember his last name) approached and asked how he can help us. We told him we would like an appraisal. He brought us back to his desk and asked some questions about the vehicle. A few more minutes went by and we were given the appraisal in writing. I was a bit surprised at the appraisal amount. I figured they would low ball us but they actually offered a decent amount. My dad on the other hand wanted more not much more but thought it was a little low. We didn't accept the appraisal at first but we returned several days later and ended up selling the car to them. The paperwork to sell the vehicle took approximately fifteen minutes and we walked out the door with a check in our hands. A lot easier than selling it private party since you never know who you are dealing with these days. read more

My son was in an accident last month and the car was declared a total loss. We flew him home from school for the weekend, with the hopes of finding a replacement. I was unsure about CarMax, but thought it would be a good place to start because of their inventory. Jonathan S. was terrific! He is close to my son's age and, although he knew my husband and I were the ones purchasing the car, he knew our son was the driver and focused on getting him in to what he was looking for - while keeping our requirements in mind. He went out of his way to locate the exact car in Escondido and get it shipped quickly to the Irvine location, so our son could drive it back to school the next day. I have nothing but praise for the whole process! I have never purchased pre-owned before, but after this experience, I may never purchase new again. Thanks, Jonathan S. for an awesome experience! read more

Had my car appraised here after received trade-in quote on my low mileage well maintained SUV from the dealer that was 20% below blue-book trade-in value! Arrived at lunchtime and waited about 15 minutes (was quoted 20-30) before beginning the appraisal process. This process took about 30 minutes (most of which I spent in the waiting area while their tech inspected my vehicle), and I received what I consider a fair appraisal which was good for 7 days. I was able to shop for my new vehicle with the knowledge that I had this appraisal in my back pocket. Wound up leasing a new vehicle from a dealer in Costa Mesa so took my old SUV to the Car Max in Costa Mesa and they "transferred" the appraisal from the Irvine location. I was out the door in 30 minutes with a bank draft and my vanity plates in hand! read more

Bought a Prius from this Carmax location around September of last year. When we came across our Prius it looked to be in good condition and only 33,000 miles which was great for the price. We went on to purchase the vehicle. The first problem was the day we purchased it. The rear camera didnt work. We had taken it in to get it repaired and a few days later they called saying they needed to keep the car because they needed to order more parts because the computer and new canera werent communicating correctly. After a week and some days and a lot of run around conversations we finally got the camera fixed. Only to recieve an extremely filthy interior with screws and trash on the seat and matts where they were working on inside. My wife and I looked around to see if they were missing any screws or if they were just extras but couldnt figure it out. We then noticed the car has a license plate mark as if someone had hit it. Makes sense now why the rear camera doesnt work..We called and they just apologized for the mess. Around the same time we had to call back because we noticed the driver side visor was broken. However, they actually fixed it and it looked properly repaired. We had to take it back in to Carmax because the arm rest on the driver side had broken. When we looked at it. It seemed to be broken before and crazy glued to the side panel. They said it could not be fixed because it is a cosmetic damage not covered by the waranty. Which we paid a good grip for. We took the car to a trusted mechanic or ours for some tires and asked us if we rethreaded the tires. We were told they were not safe to drive on. We thought that was the end of our problems. As of today the car is completely dead and wont turn on. After jumping it, it still died. With the alternator in mind, I called carmax and asked if they can take a look at it and they said they would diagnose the problem for $72. WHY DO I PAY FOR INSURANCE THEN? STAY AWAY FROM THIS CARMAX. read more

Had a very bad experience at the carmax in Ontario but Irvine was just great. I bought my car from Manny. He did a great job. Have heard a lot of negative things about pushing to buy the warranty or carmax finance. My experience was great. Manny mentioned those things but never pushed. He let me make my own decision. He was more than helpful in the process of purchasing and also afterwards. He delivered outstanding customer service. I'm more than happy and glad to have worked with him. After a terrible repair in Ontario it was Manny who pulled things straight and made me enjoy my car and leave with a good experience. Also, I strongly recommend to stay away from carmax in Ontario if you need a repair. The repair was unprofessional, made the actual damage worse and the service advisor and two levels of his manager treated me very unprofessional and offered no solution to the problem they created. Further they lied to me. This issue was fixed in Irvine in a very professional manner. Jose Chavez coordinated the repair and kept me informed about every step. The repair was fast and very good. That's how it's supposed to be Even though the standard should be the same at all locations, it varies from person to person. Special thanks to Manuel Maciel (Manny)!! read more

Beware of buying their service warranty!! I bought one a year ago and while it supposedly "covers" everything if you bring it to CarMax, including a rental, the devil is in the details! They say, oh you need to take it to the dealer, and, oh, no rental until it's diagnosed- and, btw, that will be in a week or so. They made me feel like they just wanted to get me out so they didn't have to deal with my car. Honestly, I'll NEVER buy from CarMax again. It takes a WEEK to even get an appointment to bring it in. What a giant waste of money. I so regret the whole CarMax experience. read more

We put off getting a new car because how painful the process is. After hearing praise from friends and family the last two years, we went to CarMax in Irvine. As soon as we walked in the doors we noticed the difference. Anyone who walked by was super nice. David Madsen made buying a car exciting (as it should be). We had two cars to trade-in and one car we were eyeing to buy. He was honest, sincere and played with numbers with patience and a smile. If you are like us, delaying to upgrade your car because of bad car-buying experiences, CarMax and David will change that. read more

After getting the run around at more than one Audi dealership, I decided to try Carmax and I was shocked at how easy and Efficient everything was. As with any business, it always depends on who you are dealing with. I liive a distance away but was so impressed with ROBBI SCOTT (a woman) on the phone, that I specifically went to the Irvine store to work with her. She was unbelieveably honest, had fantastic follow up, really HELPED me even when my purchase became a bit more complicated. I cannot emphasize enough- how much more professional and helpful she was than any other car salesperson I have ever dealt with. If you want to make your car purchase with as little hassle as possible and with a trustworthy salesperson, call Robbi. I also financed through them at a decent rate and the Carmax warrantee actually came in lower than everywhere else I had quoted. Not sure if that all depends on your vehicle, but worth pricing out, as I was surprised. If you do not care about the "upscale" experience, I strongly recommend driving to this location and using this outstanding salesperson. Completely worth it read more

CarMax of Irvine, CA. I went in with my step daughter on Saturday 1-4-14, she purchased a ford explorer for $10,900 she paid the down payment in CASH, Dave the sales person said they use "Edmunds" in lieu of "Kelly Blue Book", when we went to the credit union to finance the ford, they said the Kelly blue book rated the explorer for $8,000 (they overpriced the vehicle by $2,900). So we took it back to CarMax the next day. We worked with Steve Shelley with the return process: they returned her down payment in the form of a wire transfer check from "Well Fargo". I explained my concern more than once on the fact that we paid CASH and we did not want a check that the bank would hold for 5 to 7 days and Steve assured (promised) me that I could deposit the wire transfer into my account that day and the money would be in my account the next day!! Not so, my bank wants to put a hold on it for 7 DAYS!!, I called CarMax and talked to the manager (of the day) Kim and she said that it's a Liability for them to give cash back to a customer (even though I paid in cash) and they always return in the form of a wire transfer. Now they have tied my hands behind my back and my daughter cant get a vehicle until this check clears and if it doesn't then the saga will continue!!!This is utterly ridicules!!! horrible and waste of money and got yelled at because i backed out of deal after doing all the math.

We bought our car at the beginning of the month. The Carmax service department has had it longer than we have it seems like. 2 times we have taken it in because of issues. The first time we took it to them it was the very next day after we bought it. Check engine light. Said they needed to do a software update to it. Software updates take maybe an hour. They had it 4 days. Only reason we didn't have to wAit longer was because we threatened to return it. Now they have it a second time and it's been almost a week. Waiting on a part that was suppose to be there the day after we dropped it off. 6 days and 3 excuses later they say it will be ready tomorrow. We shall see. All these bad reviews on here lead me to believe that management doesn't care and won't do anything to help. First and last time I'm buying a car from here. In the car business it's just a numbers game. All they care about is making the numbers. Whoever runs this location should be ashamed. read more

We just purchased a 2014 Dodge Challenger from Carmax in Irvine on 4/24/14 for $24,998. It was posted on the vehicle window and in our paperwork that the car was an 8 cylinder. We questioned the salesperson why it didn't have the spoiler or Hemi on the hood and she suggested the previous owner must have removed it. Anyways, we discovered yesterday when the windshield fluid light came on that the car was in fact a 6 cylinder. We could have bought a brand new 6 cylinder at HB Dodge for $20,000. Carmax Senior Buyer Nester would not match this price for the car we purchased. He would only take off $1000 since he said it was mislabeled and overpriced by "accident". They had a 8 cylinder with the same mileage available for $29,888 but refused to sell us this car for the same price we bought ours for. Now we have to drive there a 3rd time to cancel the contract. False advertising and failure to make us whole forces us never to do business with Carmax again. Buyers beware! read more

I initially had a pretty good experience getting my car appraised. It was quick and painless. Although, I went to Carmax alone and while I was waiting in the salesman cube.. He stayed in there with me and asked way too many personal questions, like where I work... What I do there and since I work for a swimwear company he was saying some odd things about me wearing the bikinis and it was a little uncomfortable. But the appraisal itself didn't take TOO much time. They offered me $5500 for my 2007 scion TC that has 91k miles on it and it's in really good condition. Which I wasn't super disappointed with the offer. I came back in two days later to sell them the car so I didn't have to hassle with a private sale and I was not happy. I waited about an hour for them to even see me. And they were so so so so so slow. If you already gave an offer and inspected the car, it really shouldn't be that difficult to turn it over and sign the paperwork. Maybe they need more people working in this department. I'm not really sure. But I was super annoyed and it took up most of my Saturday when I had thought it would be pretty quick like the appraisal. CarMax FAIL! read more

We had a bizarre experience here. We went a couple of weeks ago to the Irvine location early when it was drizzling outside and the place was almost empty. We saw maybe 3 or 4 people there which is highly unusual. Chase greeted us right away and started out friendly enough, but it didn't last long. While showing us the second car, he said he wouldn't be able to show us many cars as it was very busy and it would be better to come back on a day when it wasn't so busy - huh?? We were already pre-approved by our credit union and obviously ready to buy a car so I was puzzled at his statement. He actually repeated it 3 or 4 times and started walking us towards the exit. When we got to the lobby, it was filled with salesmen standing around because there was NO ONE there! I'm not sure why Chase wasn't interested in showing us more cars, but I have never been "chased" out of a dealership before. I knew I definitely didn't want to buy a car from him, but maybe a different salesperson would have given us better service - weird! read more

I have a great deal of confidence in CarMax and their practices. We just bought the 3rd car for our family from CarMax. It was a smooth process and I am thrilled with the condition, mileage and price of the vehicle. We called Marc, who we had done business with before, early on a Saturday morning and told him the vehicle we were seriously interested in was in Duarte (we are in Irvine). Marc went to Duarte himself to pick up our vehicle on a Saturday before the Thanksgiving weekend. So we knew it drove well when we went to pick it up. It was in great condition so we inked the deal. The check out process was only 20 minutes since were paying cash. Since the 2008 Ford Escape we were buying didn't have the owners manual in it, they told us where we could buy one on -line and they would reimburse us. When the manual arrived the reimbursement process only took a few minutes. I was very pleased with the whole process and have a lot of confidence in the vehicle knowing what kind of inspections they subject their vehicles. read more

I hardly write reviews unless the place/things amaze me or i have an extremely bad experience. I came in about 4 months ago to buy my car, it was a sunday afternoon, apparently they don't have people that detail cars on sunday so they sold me a car with a quick interior clean up and car wash. When i got home i found so many crumbs in between the seats, there was dog hairs everywhere, there was a piece of gum stuck on the rug and scratches on my car. So i made an apt the following day to get my car detailed the correct way, i waited almost 5 hours for them to do absolutely nothing to my car, they gave it to me the same. The only difference is that they eliminated the fading black color in-between the windows, don't know the correct word for it. So i left unhappy once again. A week later my window started screeching along with my breaks, i went to take my car in again and told me nothing was wrong, i had to get new breaks because they lied to me& did nothing about my window! So i took care of it out of my pocket!! Once again its been only 4 months that I've had my car and now my battery doesn't work, i got stranded at the store, luckily i wasn't working and didn't get stranded in lancaster! My back light signal and front once went out after having the damn car for only half a year! I recently found out that i need new rotors, thats whats been the noise problem for my breaks also. Its just been such a bad experience with carmax since i purchased from there and i just cant wait to refinance with my own bank! I want nothing to do with them!!! I do have to say they have really poor service, my sister got a car from here too the same day as me and her car has been fine except for her battery and oil pan so far. But then again i like to check my car and clean it a lot more than she does hers. She has gone in but she hates the service they provide. So we're taking care of stuff they should've taken care of before selling the damn car. Never recommending anyone to this carmax (Irvine), I'm a very unhappy costumer!!! read more

A few months ago my husband and I dappled in the car-buying business which resulted in no new car, and a scathing review of the dealership. We were relieved to be done with the whole business. However, the need for a new car began to press more heavily on us his past week and we decided to check out Carmax. At first we were impressed with the website, which is easy to use and informative. We found out quickly, though that cars listed on the site are transferred and bought at an astounding rate, so don't be surprised if the car you see one hour is not there the next. Call them before you go! We called the location that had the car we wanted and though it had been transferred, the sales rep checked it out, transferred it back, and called us the next day. We drove down to Irvine and met with the salesman and he was very friendly and professional. A word to other salesmen! Don't try to be my "buddy" and have all sorts of "similar interests." Just be polite and tell me about the car, take me on a test drive, give me the facts. This guy was very professional, not pushy, just answered our questions and explained everything very clearly. The finance manager was also very normal as was the signing guy (not sure exactly what all their titles are). The process took a long time, but they went through the paperwork with us and I felt like I understood all the "terms and conditions." Carmax has set prices, as well as lists all fees online. We new exactly the cost when we went down and there were no surprises. Is was a relaxing experience and we love our "new" car! One star less, though, for cashing our down-payment the very next day when they said they would wait 5 days. I had to transfer money to my checking account so needed at least a day or two for the money to be available. Carmax paid the overdraft fees without a second thought, but I was slightly annoyed at having to spend another hour fixing that problem. Overall a good experience. read more

I brought my son to CarMax to purchase a used car. He wanted test-drive a 4x4 Tacoma. We had cash and wanted to buy. My son didn't like the feel of the 4x4 truck and wanted to test drive a 2wd vehicle instead. The car max rep belittled him and our sales person seemed to be annoyed and angry that we wanted to test-drive another vehicle. I was furious, but I kept my composure because I didn't want to lose it in front of my son. If I was alone, I would tore this idiot a new one. I called Carmax the next day and they wouldn't connect me to the general manager of their operation. They just connected me to one of their many sales managers and I explained the story. He was apologetic, but I could tell he didn't care. Do not go to this place, their customer service is awful! I will never come back to this rat hole and will tell all my friends to avoid this place like the plague. Hassle free, how about no Jerk-off free! Why would you come to this place, if they don't let you test drive different makes and models.. read more

I bought a 2010 Audi Q5 sline from Carmax in Escondido. They promote their "Carmax Quality Certified" program as a certainty your new purchase has had a rigorous 125 step 12 hour inspection. Well they must of skipped this step on the Q5 I purchased for my wife. Just outside their 30 day warranty the brakes on the Q5 warning light came on. This means there is less than 4mm of brake pad left. To be in a safe mode you need more than 9mm. The inspection would of confirmed there was at least 9mm left when sold. The second issue is the rear end noise. This noise has been with the car since the day we bought it. It was masked by the roof racks at freeway speed. When I questioned it during the test drive the salesman said it was the roof rack wind noise. Problem was the car didn't have the special tool to remove the racks to confirm this issue. Carmax told us to go to Audi to replace the missing tool and they would reimburse us. We had to special order the tool and didn't remove the racks until after the 30 day warranty. The rear end noise was confirmed after removing the roof racks. Carmax would not correct the problem. The two together total over $2000 to fix. Carmax will never see my business again and I highly recommend not to go there for your business. read more

Sorry but this place stinks. We literally sat for 3 hours doing all the paperwork for a car. Well, guess what they would not take a business check. We called prior to our arrival at the store and asked what to bring. Signed all the paperwork, got our copies back and then they dropped the bomb. BTW I did talked to the manager named Brittany no help, not even a blink of the eye and she said she was sorry but she could do nothing. So I guess my time, my travel, my having to hear so multiple misguided cross selling, me going through the whole process was not remotely important to her. When I asked if I could be compensated for it she said well, we don't. It was just a mistake. Yes Brittany it was and it was yours not mine so why am I paying for it. Incredible, but all smiley faced she reminded me she would let us come back the next day and we could do it all over again. I highly doubt I will go back. Again incredible, poor customer service all around and what was worse was her trying to tell she was doing it for "my benefit'. No Brittany you were doing it for your business benefit only. Never EVER try to fool the customer its condescending and dishonest. I should know I deal with customers every day and tell my staff your ability to listen and empathize is the key to making any situation tolerable. You don't and you get the situation I just went through at CARMAX Irvine, honestly totally negative feelings in what should be a fun experience and yes it lies 110% with CARMAX IRVINE. FYI we were repeat customers which makes even more ridiculous. I will keep you all posted and let everyone know if any thing positive results. I'm not holding breath through. If you are looking for a Ford, I went to two good dealerships in the area that I may go back to one tomorrow and will post their names. Also, prices not much more than this place too. read more

My husband and I stopped by at 6:00pm on a Sunday evening as we were return home from a long weekend. Test drove a car (2012 BMW x3), loved it and wanted to purchase. We were told by Johnny they closed at 7:00pm so we would need to return tomorrow. A hold was supposedly put on the car, and the car would be cleaned and up front waiting for us. (Did NOT happen). We were given a business card of another salesperson to ask for, Yui. We did arrive 15 mins. before the time we had told that Yui was not there and he had to be called in. Once he arrived we had to take another test drive. During both test drives with each salesperson we were told the car was Satellite Radio Ready and that Carmax paid for the first three months. This was also posted on the window sticker of the options on the vehicle. We closed the deal and drove off the lot. Two minutes later we were back as there was no satellite radio in the car menu. We went back inside to speak with our salesperson, Yui Chan. He assured us it was there and that we just needed to call Sirius to hook-up. NOT TRUE. We were assured Carmax would take care of. NOT TRUE. The general manager apparently does not stand by his word or his salespersons and the salespersons are not trained in the cars they sell. I will never return to a Carmax and will caution all our friends. read more

Bruce can blow me. Went in to view a Honda Civic, liked the car all n all. Had an almost identical Civic a few years prior. Had a concern with 2nd, 4th, and Reverse being difficult to get in and out of. Brought up the issue with Bruce before signing for it. He said he'd run it back to service and have them take a look at it. 30 minutes later says they didn't see any leaking and they put new "bushings" on the "shifter", you just gotta break it in. I've NEVER heard that before, but I needed the car desperately, and I maintenance warranty on it. Drive it home, run it in idle and it's leakin pretty steadily. I give Bruce a call and he says bring it on in when you get a chance. Wasn't able to til the following weekend, so I kept my eye on the oil level. Not 5 days later the car's oil light pop's on. I top off the car to buy myself time as I was unable to take it in until 2 days after that. When bringing it in I mention the severe leak as well as the trouble with 2nd, 4th, and Reverse. They give me a call an hour later and tell me they forgot to replace the oil pan seal gasket and that there was a huge kink in my shift cable, probably from the previous owner running over some debris.. Need I say more.. read more
