Karen Botticello is the only reason I'm giving CarMax more than one star because our experience was really lousy.
After looking at a number of cars online, my husband and I came to the Irvine CarMax to check them out in person. We were randomly assigned to a sales guy named J.R. From the very start, he seemed uninterested in helping us find the vehicles we had seen online. When I asked him where we should look among the rows and rows of cars, he merely pointed in a direction and then went into the office with our ID's and insurance information to copy them so we could do a test drive.
We wandered around the lot and attempted to find the several cars we were interested in based on their online listings, and J.R. was still nowhere to be found. He finally found us about ten to fifteen minutes later standing by a car we wanted to see the inside of. He opened the car for us and I immediately noticed a strong, overpowering fragrance. We got out of the car and I told him we were ready to see the next car we had found. He looked confused so I told him about my sensitivity and severe allergies to fragrances. He seemed annoyed and showed us the next car we had found (and that we had to lead him to instead of him showing us where it was). Again, this car was quite smelly -- this time of smoke -- but also looked a bit beat up and dirty on the inside. We then asked to see another car. At this point, J.R. rudely tells me that every car is going to have a smell and that it will go away on it's own. He was incredibly dismissive and downright insulting to me, and I could hardly believe CarMax would allow their sales people to behave in such a manner.
Thankfully, J.R. turned us over to another salesperson because I guess he was done for the day, and this guy Steven was way, way better. He acknowledged my concern about strong odors in cars and was respectful to us. We test drove a car that seemed pretty good but decided to come back in the morning so we could see it in the daytime. When we came back the following morning and asked for Steven, he came out from the back to tell us he couldn't help us because he was on phone duty and that J.R. would be out to show us around. I absolutely was done dealing with J.R. after the previous day's interaction and told the front desk people that I preferred another salesperson help us instead. When they looked at me puzzled, I explained that I felt J.R. didn't respect my needs, was dismissive, and that I wanted someone else to help us.
We went out to the lot and who shows up but J.R. again. Nope! Thankfully, my husband went over to him and said that we were being helped by someone else. Karen Boticello came over to help us and was immediately gracious and understanding of my health and allergy concerns. Talk about the complete opposite in service! She was friendly and courteous and said that she would be happy to show us as many cars as we wanted.
We ended up liking a car and took it for a test drive. I noticed that the car would shake sometimes when the brakes were applied and mentioned this to Karen. She said that was something that could be fixed if needed. We liked the car enough to talk about the paperwork and to see how much we'd get for our old car. The idea of taking the car without having the brakes checked out first seemed a bit odd, but I was under the impression that CarMax had done a through inspection and that if we had a problem it could easily be fixed.
Well, I am so glad we were offered a lousy trade-in price because we decided to leave and think about it at home. After reading more of the reviews here, I was so happy we walked away because it sounds like a total nightmare to try to get anything fixed on a car once you've purchased it. While Karen was a great salesperson, I think it's all about luck. If the car you're interested in has no problems, then you'll be good. But if it has any issues at all that need repair, you're going to be in a world of sh-t trying to get it fixed! And the prices are not good compared to other places. If CarMax actually did any sort of thorough inspection, it might be worth it for peace of mind, but it really doesn't seem to be the case based on my experience. read more
