We took our vehicle (a 2012 Mercedes) to CarMax to get it appraised and see what they would give us for it (in case it didn't sell). As you can see in the photo, they offered us $11,000, even tho it's all in good condition and the blue book value is $16-19,000. We sold it on our own, 3days later, for full asking price to the very first person who test drove it. The asking price was in the Blue book value I noted earlier here. So, yes, A LOT MORE $$$. Plus, the sales guy at Irvine Car Max told us that car Max would only make $200 off the car selling it at auction. Riiiight. We aren't idiots, we saw two similar cars on the Car Max Lot (a lower model but 3 yrs newer and 30k fewer miles) for $28,000, so between that and blue book, we knew it wasn't worth $11,000. This was the best, by far, car purchasing experience I ever had. I will say I did my research before coming. I researched many dealers found the cars I was interested in. Only CarMax offered the opportunity to reserve the car for me until I could come in, they actually held it for 5 days. No other dealer would even confirm they had the exact model still available let alone hold it. Upon reaching CarMax I met with Wayne, the gentleman who connected with me once I made my reservation, and he took me directly to the car I reserved. Although I was completely pleased with that car I asked to see others that were similar in style and pricing he showed me and encouraged me to test all I wanted. I went with my original pick in the end. I also had no financing prearranged and got a better rate than expected. Wayne did it all except the final paperwork which Vince helped with very thoroughly. After paying 21000.00 for a 12 year old Honda crv which is 3000.00 over blue Book, I called the service dept because the Bluetooth menu was not coming up. They first try to tell me that I was probably not pairing it correctly. I told them again that the phone menu was not coming up and the phone buttons on the steering wheel did not work either. They told me that my phone was probably not compatible. I told them again about the menu and the buttons. I finally brought it in the car to the Irvine service dept. and they could not get it to work with their phones saying none of them were compatible. I went to a Carmax in Riverside and took an identical car for a test drive to test the phone connectivity and it worked perfectly. The menu came up, the buttons worked and the phone paired easily. The service personnel just refused to admit that there was something wrong with the radio. I am very disappointed with their service and am forced to purchase another radio. The sales manager at the Irvine office will lie right to your face and say your car doesn't have on it what the online offer says! Even though the car does! They look for specific words that your vin doesn't have on it words that do not exist on your model car and claim even though my car has what I put on the online offer but he can't sell it that way cause the vin does include the word Sport! Poor customer service. Waited 1.75 hrs to complete the purchase of a car to find out almost 3 months later they never submitted the registration paperwork for the license plates to the DMV. Called them about the issue in the morning and they promised to call back today but never did. I'm on hold now on the phone for 1.5 hrs + as I need my license plates, the temp registration is about to expire and still no response. They give you a live person for 5 min to transfer you and keep you on hold all this time. This is awful. Will never buy from CarMax in the future. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Horrible customer service. I arrived at CarMax in Irvine (Located at: 9501 Research Dr, Irvine, CA 92618) at 3pm for a car appraisal. Before I arrived at CarMax, my car was fully functioning and in working condition and had been garaged and taken care of for years without any issues with the sunroof. During the appraisal process, the CarMax employees taking a look at the vehicle broke the convertible top. The hardtop of the convertible became stuck in the open position and is now inoperable. Upon speaking with the manager (who scolded me for taking pictures of my car in the stuck position) had a tech attempt to fix the roof, however, they just jammed the roof shut, and now the windows on the vehicle are stuck in an open position and the vehicle continues to beep while driving since the car is registering the roof being still open. The button to operate the convertible top now remains lit up in red, and is fully broken at this point. I arrived with a fully functioning vehicle, and left CarMax with my car being inoperable. When asking if they could have the mechanic fix the vehicle, and/or provide a contract showing CarMax's liability in these instances, the manager Luis Rodriguez told us he would not provide anything to us and that they are not liable and said if we do not leave the property they will call the police. This is not how a business should operate so I am warning others to stay away and not trust them with your vehicles. read more

I wanted to check out cars with no pressure to buy, so I stopped by CarMax. I was helped by Ron, who didn't pressure me and was pleasant and easy going. I decided to test drive a Subaru WRX STI 2015 in World Rally Blue (what a fantastic color). It was an exciting drive, to say the least. Ron only asked for a driver's license from me and then we were off to test drive the car. I looked around some more and found a Lexus GS350 that caught my fancy. This was a good drive as well, but not as thrilling as the Subaru. Again, there was no pressure. They even do free car appraisals, but those take time. I didn't have enough time to check that out, but I think some day I will be back. There are a lot of great cars on the lot! read more

Took my car into Carmax irvine last night around 7. I was greeted promptly by an associate (do not recall his name, but he was an older man). Took down some personal information then went on to ask about the 2018 Lexus rx450 I brought in for appraisal. He then asked about my payoff(lease), I was aware I had to come out of pocket. He mentioned someone with a similar car had come in earlier and actually showed me the offer that was made to Vuu Luu. I did appreciate him showing me the offer to know the ball park they would be in. What ticked me off is the personal information that was shown to me like Vuu's full name, address and phone number. I would hate if a company publicly showed my personal address/contact info like that. As far as the offer goes, it did come in about $2000 lower than a mobile service in Placentia. I took about an hour an a half out of my evening after work for this appraisal. I could've been at home with my kids eating dinner instead of wasting my time. Vuu Luu if you're reading this. The place is okay. Salesman was okay. My gripe is I decided to have a vehicle shipped for inspection. Cost me $150. I was skeptical but did it anyway. They told me it was great. Told me no marks on the headliner. Told me was like new. Told me would be clean. This car only has 15k and is a 19. So the vehicle arrives I go to see it and it's dirty. Caked with mud and dirt underneath. Every door when opened had dirt. Car had a funky smell. Car had major play in the steering and felt rode hard. I think they just want to get you in there to try to make the sale and will say anything. Don't do that. If they don't have it there at your local spot don't bother. read more

On my visits what stands out from this CarMax location is the service, bigger inventory, and atmosphere. I may not shop here for used cars. But when it comes to their appraisal services it makes the experience easy and comfortable, plus it's obligation free. Walk-in appointments can take longer before you see a consultation. While waiting I would use the time to check out their inventory at the lot. Compared to other CarMax's, this branch seems to have a larger selection. Like many car dealerships I like how they organize the cars on the lot by category, row by row. It makes it easier to find the car you like. The staff here has been great. They don't pressure you in buying a car. I'm more into buying cars brand new. But their appraisals on your vehicle are higher than the mainstream dealerships, with that said you do have some advantage when it comes to trading in your car here or take your appraisal at other dealerships. If you have kids there is a spacious kid's play room with tables, toys and T.V. to keep them busy. Also, this Carmax is clean and spacious. If you're looking for a used car or have experienced shopping at Carmax's before I prefer this location in Irvine. read more

Went in to have my car appraised in September, they valued it at $13200. Four months went by and I figured I'd finally go through with it. Expected the car to be worth less, but you want to know how much less?! $3200 in four months!!! I was absolutely shocked when he told me 10 grand. I laughed and told him to look up the value he gave me before. He claimed he could see that far back. The car had been driven 300 miles since it's last appraisal and this guy tried to gauge how desperate I was instead of being a straight shooter. I declined, listed the car on Craigslist and had it sold with 48 hours for 12750. What's ironic about this all, I have a friend who had a jeep renegade, same year as my rav 4 but it had a destroyed transmission. My friend traded in his jeep for more than I would've received for my rav4 which had all service records available. Moral of the story, they don't know what the h3LL they're doing over there. I've been to 3 other car appraisers - reputable ones - my car has appraised $12k higher at all 3 spots. I was almost shocked thinking they would at least price match.
