We came into Carmax and we were told that we'd only have to put $1000 down. They would take our trade in and we sat there for four hours came back the next day then they wanted 8000 down and they wanted to double our payments for a 2010 car. So we left we went to the Chevrolet dealer and got a brand new Chevy no problems now Carmax will not stop running the credit so it's hitting our credit every time they send us a letter and it's horrible. I would suggest no one ever go there because if you don't buy a car from him, they keep dinging your credit until I had to call today now I have to do their workto get my husband name off so that it'll stop screwing up his credit and my mother-in-law's horrible horrible customer service we were lied to and now they keep running the credit and the lady said on the phone. Tyrus was extremely helpful and very efficient. I would also like to highlight my experience with the service center, the airbag light came on in my newly purchased car and it needed to be repaired. Wes at the service center immediately put me in one of their loaner cars and followed up with me everyday until my car was repaired, he's extremely knowledgeable and explains everything in detail. Credit where credit is due. Any car lot can seem chaotic but CM was pretty organized. We came in to sell our car on a Monday afternoon after making an appointment online. As soon as I stepped on the sales floor, I was approached by Joanna asking if I needed assistance - not help - assistance. Thank you Joanna! I was directed to the cashier/business office to check in. It all started when my 10 years old Mercedes had a fuel leak, we were spooked and took it to Fletcher Jones, it took them a long time to diagnose properly and it was a serious repair job costing thousand of dollars, they gave us a loaner car which was a real snazzy Mercedes 400e coupe, vibrant red, leatherette interior, all kinds of bells and whistles. I have not thought about any car till I sat in that sexy car, I told the service manager I wanted to buy the car, they would not sell , apparently I was not the only one liking this car, it was sort of a company car. I spent hours checking every car they had on the lot, preowned and new, none was red, none had special luxury package. I spent the next 3 days researching, googling every site, every dealer, I was totally obsessed! Forget about Carvana and others, Carmax is the best folks! I finally I found 2 Mercedes 400e coupes, 1 was in the San Fernando valley but it was silver, my last 3 Mercedes were silver so I wanted red, Carmax had a red, whoohoo!!! It was Sunday night and I was shocked somebody answered pretty quick, very nice lady I think her name was Shanaya, she was very helpful, gave me all the details and I have never bought anything on the net esp a big purchase like a car! But I was very impressed w the service, it was a free transfer and I was told it would cost me nothing to test drive the car after someone will drive the car to Costa Mesa from Murrieta. I read all the reviews to make sure Carmax was a solid company. Carmax was rated high in customer satisfaction. It was love at 1stsight, the car was as beautiful as described, we both test drove and found it to be so smooth, so perfect, "let's go" I told Marcdaline, the amazing lady taking care of us, she has been w Carmax 15 years or so. The 1st night we had anxiety attack, the windows were tinted and we could not see anything, my husband was worried it was embedded but it was an after market job, a sealant, as soon as we mentioned it, Carmax removed it right away, no charge, we were over the moon happy because there was no way we would drive a car w no visibility. I am SO pleased with the entire experience I had at this CarMax. Winston is the person who helped me and he was AWESOME! He explained every single step of the process from looking at cars to financing to buying to selling. First off all, I did the majority of my car searching through their app because it's so easy to narrow down exactly what you want. I requested a car that I was interested in to be delivered from Oxnard to Costa Mesa. It only took five days and they had it ready for me to inspect and drive. I really like the way CarMax allows you to test drive the car for a full twenty minutes alone. It takes away the added pressure and sometimes awkwardness of driving a stranger around in a new car while you're also trying to decide if you like the vehicle AND be a good driver lol. This way, I was able to get a real feel for the car and how it drives! When it comes to the buying process, they have so many different options! And when I called back, he had a bad attitude when it was his fault he didn't give me all the information I needed. We were flat out lied to. We were told in person and by text they would be replacing the very worn tires. We waited to have the car detailed for several scratches and also have the tires replaced. About a week later we were told the car was ready. My husband went to the dealership still no new tires. After being told the tires should be replaced it's my understanding the service manager said no new tires. So, we left without a car. Being overcharged for a car with bad tires is not safe nor is it good business for CARMAX to apparently not be concerned with safety and also lie to their customers. Terrible Vehicle quality. I bought a 2018 E400 Mercedes Benz in 2022 from the Costa Mesa location. To begin with the Exterior body paint had several scratches/mix matched window tints. What I was unaware of and found out after purchasing and driving the car for a few weeks was that the car had several Interior issues not visible--broken tire rim , broken steering wheel (wouldn't go up or down) , broken speakers (no sound) , missing spare tire!! 5 stars for the sales department! THESE GUYS ARE GREAT! I hate being pressured by sales people. I swear I can smell that tactic for miles and it puts a bad taste in my mouth. These guys are really great. I bought a loaded Lexus GX 460, had it shipped to Costa Mesa and brought my own financing. They had no issues getting the car there, cleaning it to perfection and dealing with my finance guy who lived in another state. It took a little longer than I would have liked but they bought my wife and I lunch while we waited. Awesome! They were a bit reluctant to let me take it on the advertised 24 hour test drive which I totally understand. They checked with my insurance and sent me on my way! I took it straight to a trusted, independent Toyota truck specialist repair shop for them to take a look at it. They only found a couple of small problems which I told CarMax about before we completed the sale. 1 star for the service department. DO NOT LET THEM WORK ON YOUR CAR Here's why, the few small problems I needed fixed were pretty simple. They needed to fix a transfer case oil leak which was handled by Lexus under the factory warranty. They drove my car to Lexus and it took that dealer 2 days to fix my oil leak and then they drove it back to CarMax to complete the following repair: There was a slight steering wheel shimmy at highway speeds. They determined that the brakes needed to be replaced so they replaced front rotors and front and rear pads. I picked up the truck and immediately noticed that it pulled to one side so I called my service advisor and let him know I would be bringing it back the next day. I started the drive to CarMax and heard a jingling sound and they said the rear parking brake fell apart and they fixed that and did an alignment. I picked my truck up the next day and it still pulled to one side and the steering wheel was not straight. Also the parking brake didn't work at all. There's also greasy handprints all over the white leather and seatbelts. I took it back to the dealer and they attempted to align the wheels again and said they adjusted the parking brake again. There was no change in either issue. I called them and asked if I could take it somewhere that knew what they were doing and said that in the first 90 days of ownership, I need to have it serviced at CarMax and I could take it to another CarMax location. That was the last time I spoke to the service department. I'm never taking any car there again. read more

My dad and I went to go sell our car and they dropped 2K off the original appraisal due to mechanical issues. We went to go get it fixed out of pocket, brought it back within the 7 days they asked us to, and they STILL didn't accept it. On top of that, they requested a receipt in which we had shown them the invoice. They didn't accept that either and claimed that my dad had gotten the system hacked to turn off the car warning. I would actually give Carmax of Costa Mesa a -10 if I could. Went to Carmax with my daughter to look at replacing both our cars. We both found a car we liked and Carmax had to have one with all our requested features shipped from another location (cost of $100 for first car, $200 for second car). First car arrived and we drove it and decided to purchase it. This was on a Saturday. We made arrangements with salesman, Ryan to come by on Sunday to pay for it and complete paperwork. We specifically told him we were purchasing the car outright and would be providing a personal check. We asked him several times if they could complete the sale on Sunday. I informed him I did not have mobile banking to show balance and he specifically told me just to bring in a bank statement. He assured me at least twice it would not be a problem at all. We arrived Sunday and spent a couple hours with Ryan as he was going over all the paperwork. It became apparent that he was not very knowledgeable as his answers to any questions were vague and sounded like they came out of his training manual. There were several discrepancies in the paperwork that reflected options on the car. He was baffled as to how to handle this. We asked to speak to his supervisor. Frankly, he wasn't helpful either regarding corrections to the form. We finally got down to the actual payment part of the day only to have his supervisor say that they could not accept my bank statement as proof of funds and that we would have to come back on Monday. After taking several days, about 2 1/2 hours each time, I told them to keep their car. It was extremely clear that Ryan was totally incapable of being on a sales desk without supervision and the supervisor was also of no help. Such a frustrating experience we drove directly to a Toyota dealer and purchased a new vehicle. Unless you have all the time in the world to waste at Carmax and are ok dealing with unqualified individual sales and supervisory personnel, I recommend you avoid Carmax at all costs read more

I've been to car max before a few months ago and walked in to test drive before and no problem. Today they asked me to fill out a finance qualification, I told him I don't know if I want to finance yet. He said I have to do a finance application to test drive?! Never heard of this before. I told him I could make an appt on my phone to test drive at 7pm without the application (as I did last time), he told me to make the reservation and wait an hour in the store! My family and I had a terrible experience at Carmax Costa Mesa We were in search for a late model Lexus NX 300 F Sport in black with red interior. I Found a 2019 that was an exact match on their site. Fully loaded with only 19k miles. The listing did not have photos of the vehicle (Images Coming Soon message) but we checked out numerous NX's at our local Lexus dealerships so we knew the ins and outs of car. Plus CarMax has their "125 Point Inspection" and its a 2019... barely 2 years old with low miles. As we all know the car market is hot and since this NX checked off every single box, I decided to go through the pre-approval process online and put the car on hold. Carmax contacts me to confirm the car is now on hold and when are we coming in to take delivery. We drove from San Diego to Costa Mesa on 8/21 for an 11am appointment. Our sales associate tells us "oh great you did the pre-approval process online and you're good to go. I'll meet you out front in about 5 mins with the car" As soon as he pulled up I already knew it was going to be a pass. For a 2019 this was not in great shape. Every single plastic fender around the wheel well was really discolored/faded and the overall paint was in no better shape. I opened the drivers side door and there was a weird odor inside the cabin. There was literally dirt on the carpets. On the driver side door sill where the Lexus logo is placed, that was ripped and peeling off. The seats were faded and looked so worn in. The only part of the entire vehicle that looked 2019 was the trunk. That was immaculate lol. Now keep in mind I checked out 2018s, 2019s from other dealerships and they could all pass as brand new from the factory compared to the CarMax one. My entire family was in agreement with a hard pass. Our sales guy kept saying to us in a condescending tone "You have to understand.... This is a used vehicle. It's not brand new." To avoid getting in a debate with this guy I just told him "No need for a test drive. We've seen enough." What I don't get is that Carmax knew we were coming in ready to take delivery of the vehicle. They had ample amount of time to get the car prepped but it was in no way ready for sale. What it needed was a complete detailing and another run through of their so called "125 Point Inspection" As soon as we left the lot I drove straight to Lexus Westminster and purchased a brand new 2021 Lexus NX F Sport black with red interior, fully loaded and 11 miles on the odometer. Very poor experience. Purchased a Ford Fusion and couldn't drive it off the lot due to the gas tank lid not opening. They called me back 2 different times saying it was fixed by their service department and both times the gas tank lid was still stuck closed as soon as I checked it. They sent it to the ford dealer saying they replaced the part and when I came to pick it up the 3rd time it still didn't work. They sent it back to the ford dealer again and gave me a coupon discount for oil changes as their apology. I ended up selling the car back to carmax after never even driving it off the lot and over a month of lost time. Selling it back took multiple trips to the store with lots of sitting around waiting for them to figure out what was going on between various employees with poor communication. Have care reinspected again look at my paperwork again ok do you wanna cash out ? Yes I do. Oh you need a letter from Hawaii dmv to show proof that another pink slip doesn't exist. On three occasions it has taken them approximately a month to fix it. last time I took it was on December 9 as of today I still don't have my truck fix i continue making payments of $700 for a truck I don't even have . the dealer isn't capable of fixing it or giving me a rental car. I would never recommend anyone I love to CARMAX in Costa Mesa, I received my car in VERY poor condition. The ENGINE LIGHT was turning on since day one, my car was HICCUPING on the road and frequently HESITATING TO TURN ON, and the breaks were EXTREMELY SQUEAKY and my CHARGE PORT didn't work either so my phone kept dying on me while I was out running errands! And at my first two visits at the service desk, my concerns were being dismissed, it felt like I was being ignored and they didn't want to spend the money on repairing my car initially. They cherry picked what they decided to fix but left the major, most important issues unaddressed. Therefore, I've had to call corporate to get involved. It really feels like the service department at CARMAX wants to keep ignoring my car's problems and giving it bk to me until my warranty runs out and then they will make me pay for all this stuff out of my own pocket. All these car problems interfered with me getting around to and from work, I had to burden a coworker for rides, I was late and missed some days of work! I had to pay for expensive Ubers to run all my errands! They refused to lend me a loaner car while my car gets serviced!!! There's a major lack of leadership and lack of integrity, and lack of shame in what they sell at CARMAX in Costa Mesa. There's no shame there. I would replace that whole team altogether, starting with the management and start training a fresh staff to work with integrity and pride in their services. They need to be trained to listen CAREFULLY to customers issues and EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE these issues to PROFESSIONAL mechanics that ACTUALLY give a damn. I am so impressed with the CarMax experience. I was looking all over the state for a specific car I wanted, and was willing to fly and drive it back for the right one. I found it in up north at a CarMax dealership, and turns out I couldn't have been any luckier! For a really really small fee, they shipped it down to Costa Mesa. It only took 4 days to get here from Northern California. That fee didn't force me to buy the car either, and I had the choice to not get it if I didn't want it. They have a 24-hour test drive you can do if you want, but after test driving it for about 20 minutes I was sold. All the dealership charges is a $85 paperwork fee, and literally no gimmicks i.e. pushing you to buy extra stuff or adding anything at the dealership to increase the price. I spent maybe an hour and a half total from beginning to end of the dealership in order to drive home with my car. It was so seamless! I've never had that experience at any dealership. I dealt with three people in totality, all amazing: James helped me ship it down and coordinate my appointment , Marcdeline was my salesperson who made it seamless and Susan helped across all the t's and dot all the i's. They were so nice, so helpful, and really happy for me. They all went out of their way to make sure I had the best car by experience I could possibly have.
