If I could give zero stars I would! Went to CarMax to get my vehicle appraised to see what they would offer me for my 2021 Ford waiting for about 30-40mins. So I walked the lot to see what they had and I found a STI for about 43K. Walked back in to see if I could test drive it, only be served by a complete jerk who disowned me and my friend based on my Ethnicity. He came out to see the car and said what is this a joy ride test ride and I said yeah sure it can be. Looks at the another STI and says this one's cheaper and might be within your price point. Like Seriously who even says that to someone who's trying to bring business to them. Money was never a factor for me it was the ride experience that counts. I could've walked away with multiple vehicles if I wanted too. Waited for my appraisal and walked out as soon as I got my offer of 45K on a 75K vehicle with 13K miles on it. read more

My 2018 C43 AMG 15k miles retail for sale at 50k on lot used and they offer 38k. Best at "Clean" offer should have been 44200 and they offered 38k. Even "Average" trade-in was higher than what the offer at 42k. Do your research before you go to Car Max Costa Mesa and get your numbers. The purchase was smooth, easy to understand and the steps were quick and easy to complete. The sales rep was able to get me a lower interest rate on a loan than I was able to get myself and I was able to complete the entire purchase within 2 hours. I would not even consider setting foot at this location nor the Murietta location. I traded in my car at Murietta for what ultimately was a nightmare of a car. I had to come to Costa Mesa for repairs because they were the closest to my office. I lost my old vehicle, my deposit, both my new car payments, and I paid a diagnostic fee outside of Carmax because their technicians were "unable to diagnose" the issue even though they had not even driven my vehicle. They bought it back, but charged me additional money for the negative equity that was left over (even though they auctioned my trade in off after repairing the body damage, which would have recouped everything and then some because I know what my car was worth prior to the body damage). So I am out everything. My down payment, my two car payments that I made (both times the car was in a shop getting diagnosed) and my old vehicle. All Carmax had to say was "You came out on top". I'm sorry, I what? Your technicians are so insanely incompetent that they didn't know what I was talking about, couldn't replicate it (they did not even try) and they proceeded to push my next appointments out further and further to ride out the 90 day limited warranty. I did not drive that car for longer than a month, it was in and out of shops the entire time. I literally had to send your technician a Google search for what I was talking about, which has been a standard setting in vehicles after 2016. To top THAT off, they registered the car incorrectly with the DMV and the documents that came in showed that I purchased the car three months earlier than I actually did. All of this and they had the audacity to tell me that I am owed absolutely nothing. I lost my original car, all the money that I put into it, the money I put into the lemon they sold me, the diagnostic fees I had to pay, the cars I had to rent while my car was not with me, and all the time I had to take off of work. They also auctioned off my vehicle BEFORE the DMV released title. So I wouldn't consider dealing with them in any capacity. read more

At first glance my friends and I thought it was a joke. $15,000 for a car that has less than 50k miles - a clean BMW, clean title, well maintained. I've turned down offers for $25,000. Great seller experience (i.e., CarMax bought my car). Everyone was polite. Things were organized. Most importantly, CarMax honored their quote, and paid every penny of their online quote. This was NOT true of CarFAX (CarFAX's onsite inspection was performed by Theodore Robins Ford in Costa Mesa). CarFAX offered $700 more than CarMax's online quote via email, but then tried to offer $3000 LESS than their emailed quote when they viewed the car. I immediately went to CarMAX, who inspected the car, and paid the amount that they said that they would. Also, I did have some remaining balance on the loan. I was expecting to have to wait several weeks to receive a check from the lender after their lien was paid. Nope. CarMAX was able to pay the off the lien and write a check for the equity right there on the spot. Couldn't have gone better. Thank you, CarMAX. read more

Have visited this carmax twice and both times my experience was bad. First time we went in to potently trade in our vehicle. Right off the bat we walked into the building and no one greeted us or asked us if we needed help. We proceeded to the lot where all the cars were located thinking "someone will see us checking out the cars and approach us." We were so wrong, we went around the entire lot looking at cars and not once did someone help us out. We left without ever talking to a single employee. The 2nd times we tried to prepare better and we set up an appointment. Online they it says appointments aren't needed but they encourage them for a "faster" experience. So we show up to our appointment and they say the wait is gonna be very long because of walk ins.. If you're not prioritizing appointments then what is the point of making an appointment. I plan my day according to my appointment and if I show up and I have the same wait time as a walk in then what is the point? Horrible experience. read more

I stopped by to sort this and they said they'd forward it to the right dept and i'd get something in the mail in a couple of days saying it's been fixed. So i called them yesterday and today and now they're saying it actually takes more than 2 days and don't know exactly how long. "I just have to wait until they fix it." and that they just forward the info to the right dept and don't follow up either. There's so much wrong here. Why do they even take the car on a carpool lane when ownership hasn't even been fully transferred? and without a transponder nonetheless? Do they just assume it's ok to dump this headache on me? Nobody likes car deal ships. Nobody likes having to haggle or argue to get the best deal. Everything about getting a new(er) car... It's just dang stressful! Luckily for us, we found ourselves at this Car Max. Upon entering, we were greeted with lovely smiles and warm welcomes. Gus was happy to jump in, and get us looking at new cars. We did our homework, and knew the range we wanted, the cars we wanted so the entire test drive portion was pretty good. We quickly eliminated brands and makes since we knew exactly what we wanted. We test drove 3 different cars, walked what felt like the entire lot, and not once did Gus ever break his smile or friendly conversation. We finally narrowed our search to two cars -- after driving the last car, we made our decision! Gus walked us in and got all our info for the application. We also had our car appraised and was very happy with the amount they came back. We got approved and before you know it, we were sitting in front of Michelle to finalize the paperwork! Overall, this purchasing experience was stress free and pretty painless. Not once did I feel pressured or steered in any direction to make a decision. Gus was pretty patient and well, we spent close to almost 3 hours with him (driving the same test drive path 3 different times!) Sold a car here on 8/3/2019, after bringing in for appraisal on 7/31/2019. Lots of waiting around for people to do their work. First day, it was a 15 minute wait for appraisal specialist. He checked the condition of the car, and took it for a 1 mile spin around the block. The drive took about 7-10 minutes. Afterwards, there was more waiting around for them to do research and then get you an appraisal value for the car. Sad part is that once the appraisal value is given to you, there is no way that $ amount will go up, no matter what other CarMax you go to. It's set in stone! The value can only go down once you leave the lot. 2nd visit - Came in to officially sell the car. It took back office staff 1 hour to get all the paperwork sorted out (they had errors with documenting the correct mileage on my car! be sure to check their work!!!) and bank draft printed. Sooooo slow, it was driving us nuts especially since they told us it would only take 15 minutes - but instead it took forever. read more

Where do I start. So literally before you buy a car, they give you all the service details about the car. They pretty much tell you what you want to hear to buy the car. They say, if it's not up to "Car Max standards", they take care of it for their customers. The sales lady also told me, " we always do a fresh oil change for our customers before they leave with the car." Not true. Literally within the first couple of days of having it, I noticed my spare key wasn't working. My husband took it in the very next day. He was lucky enough to go on a Thursday which was the day the key guy will be there. Long story short, it turns out Car Max gave us the wrong key and they will have to order us a new key. Which took a week to come in. That Friday, we noticed the breaks were squeaking bad. So my husband called to book an appointment with them to get the breaks done for that Thursday ( so we can get the keys and breaks taken care of the same day). He booked an appointment for 9am which should have been more than enough time for the breaks to be replaced, and for the key guy to pair the key at 12. Nope. My husband called at 3pm and they haven't even done either! There's was other stuff (oil change, emissions) that went on but long story short, within the month of having the car we had taken the car in 4 TIMES! My advice, have them do a whole diagnostics before you even drive away. Make sure they do everything they tell you! Double check EVERYTHING! read more

I HATE shopping for a car. I absolutely hate it. So when my BMW was on it's last legs, I knew I had to enter into the Thunderdome that is buying a used car. Ugh ... I rather eat shards of broken glass than go through that. Well, that was my experience BEFORE I found CarMax. I saw a friend on Facebook that had had a great experience buying a car through CarMax, so I thought, "Why not at the very least eliminate them from the list first?" So I went in to the CarMax in Costa Mesa, and waited for the sharks to come circling. Well, they never came. Instead, I was greeted by some very friendly people who gave me over to my sales person, Brendan. "Okay," I thought, "this is where the teeth come out and the hard sell begins." Well, that didn't happen either. Brendan was really friendly, helpful, funny, and honestly seemed to car about my needs. i told him what I was looking for, what my price range was, and some of the deal-breakers that I had on my list. We walked around on the lot, sat in a few cars to check for fit (I'm a big guy, so trying to fit in most cars requires braking my spine and folding me in half just to get in the driver's seat). Brendan was really helpful, and did a quick check on some cars he thought I'd be comfortable in. And what do you know? The first two cars he suggested, I fit into perfectly! I decided on a 2008 Honda Accord, so the next hurdle was financing. Can I just say how surprised I was when the whole financing took less than 20 minutes? Like no fooling, LESS THAN 20 MINUTES! And I really thought I was going to get hit with a nasty interest rate since I had just gotten a new job after being off work for 3 months and was going through some financial issues ... that didn't happen, either. I thought I was going to be looking at 18 or 15%. Imagine my surprise when it came in at 10%. Really? WTH? What kind of voodoo witchcraft are these people working with? So the bottom line? I'm never going to buy a car anywhere else. Ever. In the history of the world. CarMax has absolutely 100% restored my faith in people and the used car market. Honestly, I almost cried because the experience was NOTHING like I'd been used to. If you are going to look for a used car, I can not recommend CarMax in Costa Mesa enough. It had exterior dings and dents, the sealed holes the windshield was completely rotted out, and theinside had damage, that I could see through the window. I wasn't going to spend any more $ to get it fixed. I tried donating it. However, the labyrinth of rules, and who actually receives the $ from the sale of the vehicle had me confused. I'm glad a rellie suggested selling my MDX to Car Max. The process of selling my vehicle to Car Max was simple. I made an appt online, met with Michael, and had the vehicle appraised in less than an hour. Michael was super informative and helpful, and didn't try to pressure me into buying a car. I thought about the offer overnight, and returned the next day w/ keys and pink slip. The process took less than an hour. I believe I received more than I would have via a private sale, and I didn't have to hassle w/ meeting multiple buyers. Keep in mind, Car Max gives you a bank draft, not a check, so it may take a few days for the money to show up in your account. However, in my case that wasn't an issue. If you have a vehicle you need to dispose of, and aren't in the market for a new car, I highly suggest Car Max's program. It fast and efficient! read more
