Not sure how you feel about this, but I'm not buying from any seller who forbids me from taking the car to my long-time mechanic two miles away. Sure they have their own "service department" that supposedly inspected the car. Any used car lot with a garage can say that. Sure there's a 5 day money back guarantee, but would you like "undoing" a $17,000 sale to become normal operating procedure for the run of the mill discovery that the car you're interested in needs a new transmission? Eek! Methinks not. Carmax wants to set themselves apart, but they do no better at earning trust than any used car lot. read more

I've been to CarMax previously to look at cars. I really liked the idea that I wouldn't have to haggle with a salesman over price and also they have service on site. Last week I went to the dealership Saturday midmorning to drive two cars and make my final choice. I went straight to the desk to ask for the salesperson I wanted to work with. The man at the desk was busy on the phone so I waited for him to be finished. When he finished he looked over at the man next to me who had come in later and asked if he could help him. I thought surely that was just a mistake and perhaps he thought we were a couple. I went over to the big outer door and looked through the window at cars until I saw the man was finished and I walked back to the desk. As I approached, he left so I waited for him to come back and when he did, I looked right at him so he would know I wanted help but he wouldn't look at me and looked at a man who was just then walking up to the desk and asked him if he wanted help. That angered me and I said, excuse me, I've been here for quite awhile waiting. He just ignored me. I left. Evidently CarMax does not want my business; therefore, I'm not giving it to them. I gave them two stars because although they treated my badly, I was treated well the first time I went there. read more

I needed to trade in my Touareg for something smaller and less expensive. I ended up choosing a Nissan Juke and just picked it up yesterday. I am so glad that I chose Carmax. Hands down the best customer service and I never felt pressured. If you go ask for Monica or Jake to be your sales rep- they're the best!! Highly recommended! read more

We have bought and sold 4 cars through Carmax now. Every single time it's been a seamless transaction. I personally enjoy haggling, alot... But the wife doesn't, so Carmax is a great fit for us when buying and selling our cars. There is no pressure, no mountains of paperwork, it's just as simple as walking in, picking the car you want to test drive - if you like it - buy it - if not, whatever... move on... I WISH there was an opportunity for the buyer to haggle as the cars are typically priced at the higher end of the KBB range - but you can't have your cake and eat it too sometimes. This being said, we sold our last Kia to Carmax, and was given their 7 day offer of which, to our disbelief, was significantly HIGHER than anything being advertised for sale on Autotrader or Craiglist... We drove it back 5 days later, sold it on the spot and then jetted off overseas for a year the day after - that transaction alone made our trip so much easier to accomplish. Highly recommend. read more

I purchased a car from CarMax today and it was an amazing experience. The salesperson I worked with was named Jake and he was awesome. He did everything in his power to make the process easy and affordable and get me in the car I truly wanted. I highly recommend purchasing and selling with CarMax because I just cant imagine it being that easy or positive anywhere else. Jake deserves a raise or something cause that guy was the man. read more

Bought 2 vehicles from Carmax in the past year. The first time we worked with Sandip, and it was a hassle free, stress free experience, and the next time Sandip was not available, so we worked with Danny (who Sandip lined up for us) and it was just the same. Do your research before you go in, and everything works out great. The paperwork and all took longer than I'd like, but I can understand that there are other customers in the line than me :) . All in all, the carmax experience is nice. Just be sure to do your homework before going there. And be prepared for a longish wait experience. read more

I bought a car 9/28/2016 and audio code card was missing. I contacted sales person and he told me he will contact service dept on Monday and will get code for me. And service person text me with he need to contact Honda to get the code. Today is 10/6/2016, they didn't contact me at all. read more

Great service and help when I needed to replace my last vehicle.

Ron and David in the Service department at the North Austin Carmax provided me with outstanding customer service during a very stressful time. They both went above and beyond to ensure my satisfaction. I could not say better things about them and the service department. read more

First off we they sold us the car the said it had RKE (remote key entry). It didn't! Second, the AC broke 2 days after we bought it. They couldn't look at it for 4 days, which was after the time to return the car (5 days) with full refund. Then the service agent made us wait all day so he could tell us he needed to order a part and would need to come back again for another day of servicing. A part he knew he would need when we made the appt a week before!! What the heck are they doing? No, I would not do business with them again. read more

I bought a 2001 Honda S2000 at a few grand above Bluebook value. Well, when I go to look at the vehicle, it has a dirty air filter. I told the sales guy that I wanted the money to get a better filter and he told me that I'd have to schedule a service date for the vehicle, I said, "yea...whatever". So, I took the vehicle out, did all of the paperwork and come to find out that the salesman had entered my information wrong on all of the paperwork aka misspelled my name and it took me an extra 2hrs to get into the vehicle and drive home. Well about one month later, I just changed both the motor oil and the transmission fluid--they were both dirty. The transmission was shifting a bit rough as the transmission fluid was so old, jesus. Make sure that you ask whether or not the fluids have been changed in the vehicle as obviously they don't do any routine maintenance on these vehicles before selling them and driving around with a "dirt bogged" air filter that can damage an engine. Additionally, if you buy a vehicle from carmax, I would suggest looking it over with a magnifying glass, because they just flip these vehicles out on the lot to make a profit. read more

Very good selection, Fast and friendly staff. Really did not push to sell me. I have not purchased but I will be back.

Been trying to get my wife to dump her 10 year old VW Jetta for the last TWO YEARS!!! This was a long term project. The Jetta was showing its age and it's just time to move on. She is about to have our third child and I want her to have the latest safety features. FINALLY she started showing interest in getting a new car and wanted my help. The car needs to be a small sedan bc she has trouble with larger vehicles. It needs to be in great condition, safe, reliable and looks good. We narrowed down the choices to the Audi A4, BMW 3 series and the Mercedes C Class. First we went to Mercedes Benz of Austin. We left after 30 minutes bc there was no available salesperson. Next up was CarMax who had all 3 cars in stock for test driving. They have a fantastic inventory and every car we test drove was in great condition. I can't speak highly enough about our salesperson Terry Millender. Honest. Hard working. Army vet. Communicates well. Family man. Came in on his day off to accommodate our schedule on the day of the purchase. He's a good dude and a pleasure to work with. He even bought a large red bow for the car to help make the experience special for her. It came out of his own pocket, he paid for it. Their business office was also wonderful. They kept the transaction smooth and with as little stress as possible. We've had the car for nearly a month now with zero problems. CarMax is no haggle, the price listed is the only price the car can be sold for. There is a 5 day full refund policy and a 30 day warranty on the entire car in addition to whatever is left on the manufacturers warranty. Our car is 1 year old with 3 years left of the manufacturers warranty. CarMax also offers an extended warranty which I declined bc we still have 3 years on the manufacturer warranty. If you want a quality used car at a reasonable price in a low stress environment, CarMax is the way to go. read more

My husband and I had been searching for 5 weeks for the right car for our family. We were approved for a loan and we finally found the car that was right for us at Carmax in Austin. We were ready to buy when we came into a delay... a delay that took us over a week to settle. Visiting the store 5 times and our sellsman Bradley, WOW SO AWESOME! He stuck in there for us and helped us to the end! We got the car that we wanted! Thank you Bradley for all you did for us! read more

I took my car into service for my check engine light on Memorial Day 2018. I had made an appointment and I was still there waiting for 3 1/2 hours, they couldn't fix it that day because the warranty office was closed, so I would have to come back the next day. All of my windows were rolled down when I was leaving, so I didn't notice the crack in my drivers side window until I had gotten home. Carmax said they would take a look at it, and they said they didn't crack it and that a pebble probably hit it and made my window crack, yet, there is no chip in the window as if a pebble would have hit it. I just feel like they weren't wanting to fix my window due to somebody cracking it. Why would all my windows be rolled down if they hadn't cracked it? They should have been all rolled up with the vehicle locked due to that is how I left it. read more

JUSTIN SMITH at Car Max north Austin totally dropped the ball and cost me a lot of time and money. He told me I was approved, shipped my car, even gave me my payment schedule so I sold my ONLY source of transportation for down payment money. When we got to the final step Justin realized he hadn't done his home work. He failed to ask me some important questions regarding my source and type of income. Turns out I could NOT be approved. I learned this AFTER I sold my ONLY car. Missed a lot of work. Still without a car. This pathetic excuse for a sales person is literally RUINING me! Do not deal with Justin Smith. Oh yeah...I never got so much as an apology for my trouble. read more

CarMax should check over the cars they sell but they don't - don't believe it when they tell you that they do. Bought a car two weeks back and brought it to my regular mechanic for a once over. Smartest thing to do. Brought it right back to CarMax and made them fix the oil leaks (plural, yes; two, and how do they miss two friggen leaks during a quality inspection?). Took five days for them to fix it, so it was beyond the five day return period they give you. Got the car back and drove it for two more days when we noticed another leak, this time the coolant (again, how does this get missed?!?) and the front bumper hadn't been reattached correctly so was about to fall off. I call the service rep and, if you can believe it, was told that was a "feature" of some cars. He recanted when he saw it later and apologized. To date, CarMax has had our car longer than we have. Buyer beware! Buy the warranty and have a competent mechanic go over the car thoroughly and bring them the list of repairs. The CarMax inspectors are jacklegs. read more

Sold me a car and Ashok, my dealer told me that my car had Bluetooth in it only to find out it didn't after I bought the car. When I brought it back in the sales manager told me that my car was sold without he option and told me that it was a simple mistake. No apology, nothing! On top of all of this, the manager then tried to upgrade me to a Bluetooth package that they installed and said they would not install it for free even though it was their blunder on misinforming me that the car had Bluetooth! Crooks! read more

They did right by me. The car I wanted was far away so they shipped it in local at no charge. It was in PERFECT condition (crazy for a 2008), and was priced extremely fairly. The no haggle was nice, because every other dealer that had this car was priced $2k more than Carmax (in worse condition) so it saved me the bother of having to go mess with all of the others and play their games. The paperwork went smoothly, and they handled it ALL for me, even the registration. (I did not trade in my car, so I can't comment on that aspect. I estimate I got about $1,800 more by selling it privately which is well worth the hassle to me). The sales guy was a nice older fellow and I could tell he did not take his job very seriously (which I can relate to). They don't get commission so he was just punching his time card, not pressuring me or testing my debate skills. WIN! The only thing I did not like is the sales "manager" (some self-impressed Type A douche hopped up on Red Bull and ambition) would not let me have Auto P.I. come inspect the car before purchase and did not have maintenance history to show me for the car (even though they required it from the original owner to buy the car in the first place...so what did they do with it that it was not available for me). He gave me some malarkey about how they are publicly traded blah blah for a damn hour, like that has anything to do with anything. Anyway, it turned out to be a non-issue because they honor a no-fault warranty thing where if you change your mind in a week (or whatever it is) you can bring it back and get your money back. Also, I had Auto P.I. check it out the day after I bought it, and it's as clean as a whistle. Overall, I am very very very pleased and would recommend Carmax for the easy-peasy-no-pressure environment, quality, excellent customer service (except for Douchie Mc Doucherson), and fair pricing. Ask for Lynn Colligan. You will be impressed by just how little of a damn he gives about "sales" while still being perfectly accommodating and helpful as he lounges back in his chair waiting for retirement. :) My kind of guy! read more

Just got back from buying a car from CarMax. Does everyone agree that buying a car is probably one of the most stressful and unending processes ever? That's all that was coming to mind as we started looking to replace my 2004 Honda Pilot. Two states, three kids, and countless excursions proved to be too much my old SUV. My husband has always loved his Toyota trucks so we decided to start looking for a Highlander. We playfully looked online for a week or two before getting a little more serious. We were happy to find a Highlander we felt fit the mold (leather, split third row, low miles) but it was in Houston (3+ hours away). But then we discovered we could have the car shipped to Austin. My first thought was that we would have to put down a deposit or credit card to have this done. But no, it was a simple phone call and boom, here comes the car. The next day we got notification that it had made it to one of the local CarMax dealerships so the following day (Saturday) we drove over. Up to this point we had been communicating with Will Madison so he's who we asked for upon arrival. We immediately felt at ease with Madison (that's what we called him). He was never pushy or talky or greasy. In just a few minutes he had the Highlander pulled up while they appraised the old Pilot. Madison was very attentive to our questions and somehow put up with our kids throughout the test drive. The commercial tagline, "The way car buying should be" kept ringing in my ears. We loved car and immediately started looking at the price of our old car versus the price of the new. It was such a relief to avoid all the haggle, bait and switch tactics. The process from there couldn't have been more simple. I'm impressed with the whole concept and execution. I will return to CarMax. I will refer folks to CarMax. You now have a fan. read more

I recently lucked into a car in really good condition and needed to sell my old car without any hassle. According to Kelly Blue Book, my car was worth roughly $3500 toward a trade-in, but I wasn't buying another car. Plus, it had been sitting for a few months, the 'check engine' light was on, the battery was weak, and the brakes were pretty much gone. I honestly thought I'd be lucky to get $1000, but once they'd looked over it, they made me an offer of $2500, so of course I was thrilled. They were super friendly, and the whole process from walking in the door to walking out with a check took less than an hour. Several of my family members and friends have bought from this location, and they all had great experiences; it was great to find that selling a car to CarMax was just as easy. When the day comes that I'm on the buying end, I won't even consider another dealer. read more

The three separate sales staff members that I have met over the course of selling two cars were great! There was none of the usual pressure to buy over my stated price range or attempts to justify low trade in values. They explain the methodology behind the trade in offers and did not try to con me. I cannot say the same about the management at this dealership. I had found a car to buy and accepted the deal which included my trade in. They close at 9 pm and I accepted the deal at about 8:30. I expressed that I wanted to finish everything that night which the salesperson said would not be a problem. I then realized that I left the title at home - 15 minutes away. The finance manager and the salesperson was fine with me leaving to get the title so we could finish. I walked out the door at 9:03 to get the title and left my wife at the dealership to go ahead and get everything else done so when I returned in 30 minutes I could just hand over the title and leave in our new (to us) vehicle. I was barely a mile away when my wife called telling me that I had to return to pick her up because the dealership manager did not approve of staying open for us. I returned and spoke with the manager - Tony Marquez who told me that he did not want to have to pay his hourly staff to stay late in order to prepare the car for delivery and we would have to return the next day to complete the deal. I attempted to explain that I did not wish to return because of work and needed to finish the deal but he frankly did not care. He actually stated "It's my call and I'm not staying open for you." Needless to say they have a nice 2014 Camry they are still trying to sell as long as you don't inconvenience the manager. Never in my life have I heard of a dealership not willing to stay a little late in order to sell a car! I was beside myself and left frustrated with my wife. The next morning my wife found a better car (brand new) at a better price at Round Rock Toyota. The sales staff and management at Round Rock assured me that they are more than willing to go the extra mile, even stay a little late, if that's what the customer needs. Tony Marquez at Carmax North Austin could learn a thing or two from them. read more

Just what you'd expect when walking in; a very corporate dealership. I love the fact they have so many vehicles to choose from and it's a seemingly clean facility. However, the salespeople we worked with were way too pushy to put us in a vehicle we did not want. The car I had put on hold for two days was brought to us to test drive DIRTY, a roach in the back of the vehicle, and a NAIL in the tire! We couldn't even do the test drive! You'd think with two days to get a vehicle ready for someone they'd check all of those things. The salesperson told us we could take the car home for a few days to test it out, which was very unrealistic seeing that there was a nail in the tire! I told them I had also looked at a 2015 Jeep at another dealership which they called a "junk" car! So apparently to them anything that's a 2017 or older is junk. Compared to other dealership, they are a tad overpriced. Needless to say, I bought my 2015 Jeep elsewhere and have been very happy! read more

For the first time in my life buying a car was actually enjoyable! I found the car I wanted online on a Friday, placed a hold on it til Tuesday at which time I test drove and decided to buy. Within 2 hours I was literally driving off the lot with my new car! That is less time than it takes to buy a dress :). There was no watching salesmen run back and forth to the "man" on the pedestal. There was no haggling of pricing or high pressure! No sending paperwork to the "mysterious finance guy" and waiting an hour for a response. Everything was done online within minutes! All I can say is I would never go anywhere else. Also, I feel at peace with their extended warranty as I have had too many occasions of being overcharged at local mechanics. read more

Let me tell ya about his lady Susan Pruett. If you are looking for a straight forward, down to earth, get things done, shows you respect, knows her stuff, kinda gal, look no further!! My husband and I have always purchased our cars & trucks from big name dealerships. Every time we did that, we left with the vehicle but never a warm fuzzy feeling that we did the right thing. We would spend countless hours at these dealerships ( which FYI, can't get that time back ) they always made us feel like we weren't important enough, just bad vibes always. We had seen CarMax before but never thought they would carry something we would be interested and quite honestly we were just not educated on how they ran their business. I have to say hands down to the founders of CarMax, your policies and the way you do business is the way everyone should be treated . Employees like Susan Pruett is what the core of your business represents! Thank you to the Management team for working with us when we needed to get our SSN cards & thank you to financing for accommodating our rush close. Lastly, after the purchase Carmax and Susan let you know they will be there for you anytime. That my friends is the kind of people I want to do business with! I was helped by Phillip during the sales process and he was nice & helpful. Not pushy at all. The process was very easy and streamlined. Shera in the business office was very helpful and has great customer service skills. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the amount offered for my trade in was $1000-$2000 less than I expected despite me going on KBB and entering the info myself. Agree these guys wasted my time.. I bought an bmw M3 a month ago.. And they said the car should be here in austin 2-3 weeks.. When i called them a week after they said they are waiting for a carrier to pick up the car, and i was like ok thats fine.. And called them a week after to find out whats going on with the car.. they said it was picked up and they should receive it quick! once once they received the car like almost 4 weeks after, this guys named Jimmy who helped me with the loan said the car is here and you can come pick it up. So i went to pick it up which was in a rainy day and test drove it.. They kept me for 2 hours to get the paper work ready.. When they got the paper work ready they came and told me that they have lost the title for the car!!! And i was very pissed because i paid $700 to get my car shipped and once i received it they said the title was lost!! And told me you might have to wait 2-3 weeks more to get a duplicate title.. So ok after waiting a week later i called them.. they said they are looking for it.. They didnt even ask for a duplicate title! i kept calling them for everyday to find out the status.. all they told me was same crap that they are still working on it.!! Till now which is about 2 months im still waiting for the dam title! and today which is 4/3/12 they told me that i have to re-apply for the loan and do it all over again.. and they cant give me the car now.. But when i asked Jimmy about the title he still didn't give me a honest answer. I know now that they are making up all kinds of crap so i wont buy that car.. Worthless people.. Wasted my time all this time.. Again i agree with the guys below me and please watch out for these three guys Jimmy, Ellie and Jessey!! This business is going down because of these three people.. Im telling you!! If any of those 3 people see's this and you know what im talking about.. you know its true.. and yes payback sucks!! read more

I purchased a 2013 Toyota 4Runner on June 8th with Will at the North Austin Car Max location though I did most of my communication with Mike from the South store. Both sales team members were great! Mike answered all of my questions and helped me sort through financing options. I went in knowing exactly what I wanted, finding it at the Houston store and having it sent to Austin. I met Will prior to when my 4Runner arrived to go over trade in value for my car and other options like extras and warranty. I wanted to make sure I had all my questions answered and options weight prior to purchase. I'm just Type A like that I guess! I ended up selling my vehicle privately as CarMax offered significantly less than what I was expecting. They offered $1800 for my 2005 Toyota Matrix with 125k miles on it and I ended up selling if for $4300 on Craigslist. Will did a great job handling the purchase and in total it took about 2 hrs from start to finish. I did go in pre-financing through my bank (got a better interest rate) and knowing exactly which warranty I wanted so Will didn't have a lot of "selling" to do. Overall, great experience and a great SUV! Will did say that it was rare to see a female buying a car alone without her husband - which I took as a total compliment :) I know what I want and I go for it! Plus I knew my husband would just be on his phone while I filled out my paper work anyway LOL. read more

CarMax has the winning business plan. This is the way to buy a car. I pulled out my hair in frustration dealing for three weeks with individual dealers searching for the car of my choice through the Internet. What a Byzantine system of third party vendors in far flung states representing themselves as the Texas dealers whose inventory I was viewing.. Then you end up interacting with two or three people trying to confirm a feature/trim package. At CarMax, my salesperson was an effective email and phone communicator, conscientious about appointment timing, went the extra mile to sync my smartphone with the car bluetooth, and the business office handled the paperwork extremely efficiently and professionally. All personnel I encountered were knowledgeable and customer focused. My single disappointment is the poorly color-matched touch-up paint applied to a dozen hairline scratches I suspect would have been less noticeable left as is. read more

Carmax is NOT to be trusted. They band the use of auto p.i. or lemon busters before you purchase one of their cars, stating that one of these inspectors might mess up their cars. I really HIGHLY doubt that. SHADY. BOGUS. And will probably rip you off. And if not, then you are very lucky. read more

This was our second Carmax purchase and we came back to Carmax because of the great experience we had with the first purchase of a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland at the Albuquerque store. That vehicle turned out to have a tire which would not hold air and they could not match a new one to the other three, so they put four new tires on the car at no charge. Both purchases were a great experience as you can walk through the available vehicles with no sales pressure, choose those vehicles you want info our test drives, then go into the store and finalize your purchase. This purchase, a 2014 Jeep Overland, was also a good good experience with a no-hassle purchase. Both purchases have been my best car-buying experiences ever. read more
