Carmax advertises themselves as a no haggle simple solution. Their offer was below everyone else on my trade-in by about $3000. Their vehicle was priced over market by 10%. The problem was they did have a car that we liked. In the end, I was so turned off by the poor customer service, the overworked employees, and the lack of process. If you're going to make it big mechanized and one simple price you at least have to be efficient and service oriented. Somehow they sucked it everything. Definitely changed my perception of ever wanting to deal with Carmax for selling or buying a car. CarMax: CrookMaxxing Lemon Slingers The experience has been a masterclass in deceptive practices, zero accountability and zero fs given. What was wrong on day one: Service lights were already illuminated when the car drove off the lot (they keep deleting my photos here). Brake fluid and engine oil both overdue for service. The tailgate was also inoperable. CarMax advertises a rigorous 125-point inspection on every vehicle. Well their service department must be blind. Dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Also, severe water spots on the hood. What was discovered within three weeks (warranty period) -Active coolant leak with pressurized spray visible under the hood -Water intrusion inside the cabin. both front and rear -Rough idle -Leaking washer fluid pump. How CarMax handled it: When the first issues were brought to their attention, they made no effort to acknowledge them or schedule a service appointment. It was brought to their attention 3 times at the time of sale. For the rest of the issues, Saturday was my last opportunity. Turns out service is closed on weekends and I found out the hard way. I was directed to use the app by an employee who answered the phone, but the app has no scheduling feature. Only a phone number that routes back to a closed service department. My warranty expired while I was following CarMax's own instructions. They did not honor my attempt to schedule a service appointment. Warranty expired and I was told to kick rocks. I spoke with another floor manager to wait 2 weeks for some other manager. I refused to wait. I spoke with the general manager who said kick rocks. I spoke with the inventory guy - who said kick rocks. I am completely baffled as to why their warranty is 30 consecutive days vs business days. Why is it possible for a warranty to lapse on a weekend when you can't do shit about it? I was told to "leave a voicemail" next time. I spoke to a human. Why is that not enough?! I have the call logs. Why - did they not schedule an appointment? I don't understand how this is allowed as it is clearly a deceptive practice. CarMax inspects their vehicles like Boeing "inspects" their planes. We all know how that went. These guys make money laundering car dealerships look like saints. They actively and knowingly did not inspect the vehicle and made every attempt to NOT schedule service and took no accountability for it. Look at the other reviews here and complaints with the BBB if you think I'm overreacting. And just to add insult to injury, they sold my data to data brokers for which I am now receiving an onslaught of spam regarding my vehicle's warranty. read more

My tires were crap. My brakes were crap. My transmission is probably crap. This place is such a stereotype of itself. And the cars are dirty. Here's my advice: (1) if you're in your 30 day window, just take it back. (2) If you're in your 90 day window, go to the most trustworthy service shop you can find. Get them to run every diagnostic, find out how run down your breaks are, your tires are, all that. Then take it back to CarMax on day 86 or something and tell them to fix it all bc they sold you a run down POS and it's under the 90 day warranty (it might also have a mileage requirement , like whichever is lower, so watch that too). Because I promise you, they only made sure it'll drive off the lot and that's it. They will tell you, it passed our inspection! I'm like, you know how bad off a car can be and be passable? Plus, their records are crap. When I asked about their warranty they were like we have no record of you buying a car from us. I was like, well I do, and the IRS should? So I'd talk to your CPA?! So last but not least, (3) keep all your documents. Their business office sucks. read more

The process and experience from start to finish was VERY smooth. Gave my son a more than fair price for his car (they honored the trade-in quote I did online before we came into the store). The car we bought was in great shape when we test drove it, but they went the extra mile to fill it with gas (was at 1/4 tank when we test drove it) AND washed/cleaned it (looked new) before we drove it home. Car has ben at approved warranty mechanic out of town (the mechanic shop has been aweswome and trying to help), Per the mechanic, vehicle should be approvede since there is no way that i could accumulate sludge in the mileage i have put on it and i do get regular oil changes. Before I go into detail about my ongoing nightmare with these clowns, I'd like to say that it takes a really really bad experience for me to get on yelp and write a negative review. After about 2 months of searching for the right car to trade my truck in for. We came across an infinity qx50 at this location. We came by and test drove it, immediately fell in love with it. It's a nice car, low miles. Theo, our salesman was great throughout the process. Carmax took my truck for the trade in and all of the equity was put towards the down payment for the infinity. I was nervous about this purchase given the fact that these cars in particular are known to have mechanical issues without the right maintenance. I was assured that carmax will never allow a car on their lot with any defects. Every vehicle goes through "thorough inspection". Well, that's a lie. It wasn't until about 30 minutes into our drive home we noticed some clicking noises coming from the engine along with a slight exhaust like smell coming through the vents. This worried me considering the amount of carbon monoxide that flows through an exhaust system. I thought it could be minor, I'm being paranoid. I called service the next day to have it looked at. Nope. Service was backed up two weeks. They couldn't get anyone in. Even a new customer who purchased a car less than 24 hours ago already having issues. So, I set up an appointment at the north Austin location. They briefly looked at the car and said the noise was normal. I had a hard time believing that. I asked if they could do an oil change and drive the car around their parking lot so they could smell the exhaust fumes. The service manager quickly denied it and told me he could assure me the oil change was done by carmax when the car was purchased by them and that he didn't pick up on any exhaust scents coming through the vents when he drove it 10 feet to make space for another car. He then quickly tried to get me to leave as if he had more important things to do like take his lunch. I thought ok, I'll have to get in touch with infinity. After getting in contact with the infinity dealer in austin they pulled up the vin and said my car had in fact been in their service department about a year prior for a check engine light due to lack of oil changes/maintenance. I explained my situation to him and I recall him even telling me to be wary of vehicles on any carmax lot. Bad news for me. I drove to carmax south Austin and convinced service get me in asap. They finally set up an appointment for me. After a few days they call me telling me I have to start looking for a new car because mine is too far gone. They offered me two transfers from any carmax location under $500 and put me in a loaner car. I had about two weeks left before my 30 days was up for a vehicle return/exchange. I tried calling just about everyone you can speak to at the south Austin location and even corporate trying to get an extension on my 30 days or more incentive so that I wasn't rushed to get into a different car out of state with unknown financing options. I was denied. Over and over again. A corporate customer relations operator by the name of Paola even told me they couldn't offer more incentive because they were already doing me favor buying the car back! Even though I was still under my 30 day return!! No one could do anything for me except offer me two transfers. After one final attempt with corporate about different incentives they told me the best they could do was offer me a free dinner at any restaurant up to $100. It felt like an insult. I'm here for a car, not a meal. Now, since I am no longer officially a "carmax customer" they denied my request to use their loaner for a few days longer until I can sort out getting myself into another vehicle elsewhere. Thanks to carmax I am now car-less with my equity in hand. My intention was to trade my truck in, not sell it outright. What kind of company pressures a customer who was done wrong to purchase something without any kind of real incentive? Carmax is a joke. I will never consider purchasing anything again from these scammers. read more

I'm really glad Carmax has the 7 day return policy. I took the car to my mechanic with in the 7 day period and I'm glad I did! Carmax claimed that the car had been inspected with their 124 point inspection checklist. My mechanic found that the coolant, brake and transmission fluids were overdue for service, the air filter was dirty, the serpentine belt squeaks, the battery is very corroded, and the tire tread is very worn (5/32, which is just barely passable, I would've had to replace them within a month)! All of these should have been caught and fixed after their inspection!! When I took the car in for a return, Carmax offered to fix some of the issues however I'm not comfortable with this vehicle as it had been misrepresented. These issues should've been fixed prior, either at this dealership or the one it transferred from. This car isn't up to their standards and it's no where near mine. For me this offer to repair the lengthy list of problems was too little too late. I looked into purchasing a different car from them. I'm a return customer, and I understand the no haggle policy, but when you (Carmax) mess up, you (Carmax) should be willing, for the sake of your reputation and customer service, to take off something from the price. I feel this was a fair request given that I had wasted time and money on this car. They were not willing to do that however. I don't feel like Carmax valued me, my time or peace of mind. I had paid the down payment with debit and they initially said they would mail me a check for the payment amount and it would take 10 days for it to arrive?!? These seemed ridiculous and very 1995. Luckily, there was a man in the business office, a real MVP, that stepped in and was able to assist in getting my payment refunded just by swiping my debit card. This guy in the business office (I wish I could remember his name) was the only one out of all the other employees I interacted with throughout the whole process that made me feel like my time/money were valued and respected. At least one of them knows something about customer service! It took over an hour to return the car. This felt like a sale tactic, to make me wait a long while to see if I would change my mind on purchasing another car with them. Overall, this store's customer service was very disappointing. They treated me like I was just a faceless number, and didn't really do anything to correct their error. They showed no concern for their lack of customer service. I'm glad I was able to get my money back and I'll take my business elsewhere, perhaps to a store that cares about its customers and its reputation. read more

This place is an absolute disaster when it comes to communication and follow-up. It's nearly impossible to get anyone in the store on the phone regarding transfers. Trying to use the operator line always resulted in non-stop ringing (or an extremely rude person picking up the phone). If I didn't already have a non-refundable transfer fee tied up, I'd walk away from my deal. So, I've bought several cars from carmax and never had an issue until we tried to sell them back a car for personal reasons. Day one, we get through most of the work until it gets to the balance of what we owe on the car and we didn't bring our check book so we came back the next day a it was 8pm by this time. When we got there, we were then told that our balance exceeded the limit of the approved amount for a check, and the drive-thru at the bank just closed and we than loved into who we got the loan through and payed off the remaining amount and were then told we would have to come back because it hadn't processed yet (which we totally understood, Brandon even called to double check for us). So we are back for day three, and they've lost our paperwork that had our ssn numbers names and copies of our photo id's. read more

The sales associate at Carmax Houston said they were unable to fix the scratches on my car, but to try asking Carmax Austin. Carmax has a thirty day warranty. Carmax Austin said they were unable to fix the scratches on my car, but would try and clean the inside of my car. They do contract with a body shop, but will only send it out in rare circumstances. Carmax Houston wouldn't detail my car before I drove off the lot. Carmax Austin washed my car but the inside of the car was still dusty and didn't look like it had been wiped at all. I'd always bought cars from individuals before buying from CarMax and after buying from Carmax I don't think I'll ever buy a used car again from a private party again. So I'll either buy CarMax or new from now on. The car I bought came with a warranty for 5 years or up to 125,000 miles, which cars bought from private parties don't come with. Also the selection CarMax has is absolutely phenomenal and they can ship you cars you want to test drive that aren't at your local CarMax, sometimes for free sometimes for a fee, depending on the distance. The one I had shipped to Austin arrived in like 2 days or so it was great. Also the terms of the financing were reasonable even compared to credit unions and it was just really nice to have a one-stop shop by financing directly at CarMax. I considered Carvana too but it's online only and their financing was wildly higher than CarMax's. I also considered car dealerships both new and used but their process was very confusing I just wanted to know how much things cost and even that was sometimes hard to get a clear answer to. Every person I communicated with at CarMax, whether via text, phone call, or in person, was absolutely courteous, professional, and not trying to take advantage of me in any way, everything was upfront. The fellow I did the test drive and signed off on everything with was Stephen and he was great. I mean CarMax left such a good impression on me that I would totally consider applying for a job there just to fill up some free time, it just seems like a great service they're doing for the community. I really got the impression that CarMax runs a tight ship, everyone's uniform is crisp, the facility is so clean and well designed, the website is A+, I mean everything about this company just says "We're running a professional operation here." I'm impressed, this is a very cool, very professional business and this entire process was fantastic, I will recommend CarMax to my friends that don't know about it. Good stuff. read more

Now 2018 and I still have the truck from CarMax. We don't put too many miles on it. I will enlighten you on my dealings after I wrote their review. The truck was back several times under the extended warranty. Don't remember what we paid for the additional coverage, deductible was $150. One instance I brought it because it was loosing brake fluid. They called later to tell me they couldn't find anything wrong....$150. A couple of weeks later it was still loosing fluid. Dropped by local mechanic out in Dripping Springs and sure enough the master cylinder was nearly full when they pulled the cover. At that point, they started documenting everything that was failing on the truck and handed me the list. Drove the truck back over to the service department and demanded my previous deductible back. I actually even took the truck back to my local making sure they actually did the work. Not sure I'd buy another car or truck here. read more

10/10 DO NOT recommend purchasing a vehicle from this location or any Carmax for that matter. This may be a bit long but I hope it will at least save one person from the hassle that comes from purchasing a vehicle from Carmax. I've had my vehicle for less than a year, I do not feel safe driving it and I probably never will after these experiences and I 1000% regret the decision to purchase from CarMax. I purchased my 2018 Jeep compass from the South Austin Carmax location in September 2020. Since then, I have had several occasions where my vehicle shuts off in the middle of the road. The first occurrence was in January 2021, my vehicle shut off several times. When I took it into CarMax they found that there was an unrepaired recall that needed to be fixed, my vehicle was sent to a jeep dealership and this was completed. They kept my vehicle for over 4 days and it was like pulling teeth trying to get into a loaner. On June 9th, my vehicle shut off again in the middle of the road. Every light on my dash started blinking and my car would not turn back on. I had to call the police and a tow truck to block off the road and help push my car out of the lane. My vehicle was taken to the South Austin Carmax service center, where they told me there was nothing wrong and it was just a dead battery. I explained to them that I did not believe that was accurate due to the fact that the car shut off while ON, when typically a dead battery will just give you trouble turning the car on to begin with. Also, when the tow truck company came to get me out of the road, they attempted to jumpstart the vehicle which did not work. The service men refused to listen to any of that and insisted it was only the battery. I did not believe this one bit, however, I replaced the battery anyways just to be safe. (I also had to pay $80 for them to misdiagnose my vehicle, and shelled out $220 to replace a battery that most likely did not need to be replaced) June 16th, my car shut off mid turn in the middle of a very busy intersection. I was almost struck by a vehicle going over 50 MPH. This time, my vehicle turned back on shortly after. June 17th my vehicle shut off in the middle of the road AGAIN. Vehicle turned back on shortly after. I spoke with CarMax again, they said I needed to bring in my vehicle to be looked at again. However, they could not provide a rental or loaner vehicle because they didn't have any available and wouldn't have any for a "long while" June 24th, my vehicle will not turn on and has not turned on since then. Called CarMax Austin South and left several messages and my calls were never returned, I had to contact the CarMax Facebook page just to get someone to return my call. From there, I submitted everything through MaxCare and was told I would have to wait until the repair shop submits a claim and it gets approved before I can get into a rental. Let me also add, my vehicle was diagnosed with a melted fusebox by LAMBS Auto repair, when CarMax service member was "positive" it was only a dead battery. I was put into several dangerous situations due to this persons inability to correctly diagnose my vehicle. Now, onto MaxCare, the warranty program offered by CarMax and provided through Assurant. Absolutely horrible and quite honestly, probably a waste of your money. I was told today, June 29th (no vehicle for 6 days) that my rental reservation was approved and I could pick it up at anytime today. I show up to pick up my rental and I'm told there is not a car available for me. You can only imagine my frustrations. Called CarMax again to speak with a supervisor to see if anything can be done to help navigate through this horrible experience. I was told the service supervisor would have to give me a call back in the morning. I will continue to update my review as this situation continues. Buyers beware, do yourself a favor and don't shop here. Update: after speaking with the service manager at Carmax Austin South, they are unwilling to assist at all with this situation. Got an offer for my van, but it didn't take into account the increased value of wheelchair conversion. Two employees told me on the phone that if I would bring the van in, they could reappraise it, taking into account the conversion. Wrong. The offer didn't change and they told me on site that aftermarket improvements don't impact the offers they make. Would've been nice if they'd told me that before wasting three hours of my time. read more

Out of all my vehicles purchases in the last 9 years, this was my 1st experience purchasing from CarMax. I purchased a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta SEL on 7/8/22 and I should've know everything would go downhill by how soiled the interior of the vehicle was. The vehicle was NOT serviced and underwent NO safety check / inspection. I was stranded on the road one week after taking delivery due to a dead battery and bad alternator. The vehicle has several other electrical issues that would never have been addressed because it took them three weeks to change the alternator. I was denied the 30 day money back guarantee because I was at 31 days...but this was while my vehicle was stuck in service for 21 days. I would've gladly gotten my $3100 down payment back and gotten another vehicle elsewhere but now I'm stuck with a negative equity vehicle that was never road worthy in the first place. read more
