One star is too many for the experience I just had.
I would like to start this by saying that I have been to CarToys for all of my car electronics needs since I got my first car 8 years ago at age 16. As I got older and learned how easy it is to install myself and realizing that some things I'd been charged for during install was BS (another story completely, but do know that ALL DECKS COME WITH A WIRING HARNESS! IF YOU ARE PAYING THEM FOR A WIRING HARNESS THEY SAY YOU NEED, YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF), I started doing installs myself but still continued to purchase equipment from their stores.
Within the past two weeks or so, I have purchased two decks from the Everett store. One was a flip out touch screen deck, the other was more basic. I noticed that on the back of their receipts it says "Car Toys will match the price of any local retail store or online retailer who is authorized by the manufacturer to sell the identical product and has the product in stock." I pointed this out to the salesman, as I was buying both decks at the same time. I did a brief Amazon search and found both decks (brand new and in stock) for a lesser price, and he happily matched both. I would also like to point out that one was from CarToys' Amazon account, the other from a different seller. The salesman still matched them both, and I was very happy with his service.
Fast forward to about an hour ago today (3/14/2014). I come into the store with the intention of buying two sets of speakers (Alpine SXE-1725S). I had done my research and seen the current in store sale price, and an online Amazon price. I finally get the attention of a salesman (I can't remember his name, so I'll call him Dick from here on), and let him know that I wanted two pairs of those speakers. As Dick is ringing them up, I show him the price of the ones on Amazon (around $22 per pair). He looks up at me and (condescendingly) asks if I expect him to match that price. I let him know that on the back of CarToys receipts it clearly states that they match online retailers. He sternly tells me that CarToys does not do that. I inform Dick that I had just bought two decks at Amazon matched prices recently from his store, and ask him to grab the receipt. After some fumbling, I show Dick the exact spot on the receipt where it says this. He then tells me that it says only authorized online retailers, which would require him to do some research to verify the seller is authorized. I ask him to give me a minute, and do more searching online. After searching on CarToys amazon account, I find a different pair of speakers I'm interested in and go to the showrooms to search for it to see how it sounds. Now at this point I'm (admittedly) assuming that if a Cartoys retail store is an authorized dealer, their online accounts would be as well. He comes around and asks me what I would like to do regarding the speakers. I show him the other speakers on the Cartoys amazon (cannot remember the brand), and he starts getting angry with me saying he cannot price match online retailers. I point out that it is from a CarToys account, and try to get across my point that a Cartoys account should be an authorized retailer. He only continued to get upset, and began telling me in depth how Cartoys retail stores and online stores are separate things. While I understand this, Cartoys online should be an authorized retailer as well. But I digress...
Dick then loops back to the original debate over the Alpine speakers. He informs me that in order to verify if an online seller is an authorized seller, he would have to call an Alpine representative and ask. Sounds simple enough, right? I thought so too. After a pause and a second to think, I ask him if he could do that and check. He then immediately became irate, turned around to storm off, and clear as day said (loudly, and with other customers in ear-shot) "Jesus fucking Christ, you really want me to do this?!" At this point I'm more shocked that someone working in customer service just said this to a long-time customer than anything else. I shrug it off to myself and tell him "it's cool, I'll just order them online." He then stutters his words (possibly realizing his mistake), trying to tell me that that's a good idea and that online I can get free shipping and yada yada. I thank him for his "help" as I walk out of the store and leave.
On my drive home, I realize just how offensive and inappropriate his behavior was. Extremely unprofessional, rude, extreme, and condescending. It has also resulted in the loss of me as a customer (just a fish in the ocean to huge company like Cartoys, but still), and the loss of business of any of my friends and family and anyone I canpossibly get ahold of. read more
