The service here was horrible. As soon as we sat down we got yelled at by a server walking by because we had split our family of 10 into 2 different tables. The food tasted great for such bad service. When we got the bill they added the price of a lemonade even after being told it was a kids drink. While going to pay one of my family members got out their card but the person who was ringing the bill said she didn't want to touch the card like it had germs on it. Finally, after so many years my family and I made it to Captain Steve's. To be honest, the main reason we never went when my family was in town was mainly because they don't serve beer. Hey! Don't judge. We did enough day drinking so we figured it was time. Nope, not then either. So dang busy we couldn't even get in the door. Take Two: The very next evening. Less people but still busy. The entrance is kind of confusing. They want people to split at the entrance based on how many are in their party. Complimentary hush puppies await your presence. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and was pretty good overall. He was patient too because it took us quite some time to make a decision. There is so much stuff on the menu it is crazy. It covers so many different cravings. Steak, chicken and seafood.. oh my. I enjoyed my steak with side of grilled shrimp with a side salad and collards. Yum! Tried this for the first time this evening for take-out. We only pass this pretty much every day since we've moved to Fort Mill and keep saying we're going to try it and, thankfully, we finally did. Wow, do you get a ton of food for such a great price! We ordered the clam strips with onion rings, the fried baby shrimp with fried catfish strips and a baked potato and a fish sandwich with french fries. Everything was so delicious and so, so fresh. Not a frozen, thawed and fried item to be found here. With the abundance of food we have we also have plenty for leftovers. My family has lived in Fort Mill for the last 12 years. We've always seen the huge crowds at Captain Steve's but had never tried it until last week. So we gave it a go. I wasn't focused on the ambiance or the service because I wasn't expecting much from a location like this. But we figured that the food must be incredible for the place to be so packed every night. Maybe the local crowd that supports Captain Steve's is just used to the food here, but it was absolutely horrible. Came to this establishment on August 12, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. with my family after a Funeral/ Memorial Service for my cousin. There was confusion from the very beginning. First, my Aunt was told they reserved rooms for large parties. However, through miscommunication from the establishment she wasn't informed that they wouldn't hold a room on Fridays or Saturdays. Second, they (namely an extremely arrogant and rude Pacific Islander/Hawaiian hostess) caused further insult to injury when 'informing us' that our family couldn't remain seated together.. We were a party of 25. Apparently, they have a policy that prevents seating more than 20 individuals together. We were told they did not want to back the kitchen up, and wanted to keep the noise level down (Although, it was already loud in the establishment). We explained we were willing to break the checks up per table and order as any other separately seated parties, and we aren't a loud family anyway. However, they refused to seat our family together and 5 of our family members had to eat alone. Two additional family members were so upset they decided to leave the establishment altogether. There were several empty seats, near our table. The restaurant wasn't filled to capacity. However, due to the "policy" we couldn't remain together....even after explaining that we left a funeral, was originally told we could have a section, and the restaurant was empty. On top of it all, when I was forced to order by my Aunt (it was her son that passed away, so it was "her" day) the food was just 'okay'. The fish and oysters were fried very hard. The homemade lemonade tasted like it was out of a store. The hushpuppies were actually pretty good. If it were my choice, I would've taken all 25 of my family members and gave another establishment my money. I won't be returning...ever. Parking Lots was spacious. Notice how a lot of the low ratings come from the poor attitudes of wait staff. I came here for the first time with my family, and experienced the worst customer service that I have ever had in my entire adult life. I'm not sure what the waitress' problem was exactly, but she had the rudest, nastiest attitude I have ever seen in customer service. Occasionally, someone in our group would try to get her attention with an, "Excuse me miss? Excuse me?" Each time, without fail, she would blatantly ignore that person and just walk away. But when she came back out, she headed straight for whoever was trying to get her attention at the time, which meant that she heard them in the first place and just decided not to acknowledge them. Her attitude was SO bad that it became a running joke at our tables that we probably shouldn't ask her for anything else or we may get cursed out. And while we were able make light-hearted jokes about the service so that our overall mood wouldn't be ruined and we could continue to enjoy each other's company, her disgusting behavior was by no means a laughing matter. The absolute last straw for me was when she came as close to my face as not even an inch from my nose to put something on the table. I had tried to give her the benefit of the doubt the first few times she'd done this thinking that maybe she had no idea how rude she was. But I found myself craning my neck and face back to accommodate her, which told me she was being rude on purpose. Common sense, even if you have never waited tables before in your life, would dictate that you walk around the table to the areas that you need to set things down on, instead of reaching over people because you are too lazy to walk to the other end of the table. I ended up having to physically push this woman's hand OUT of my face because that's just how close she was to hitting me and looked her in the eye like, "Really???" She responded with, "Oh, excuse me" with the same 'I don't want to serve you ANYWAY' attitude, which told me that she knew exactly what she had been doing the entire time. I'm not sure if her main problem was that she had a whole group of black people to serve or what, but I got the feeling that she felt serving us was somehow 'beneath' her. However, the minute she saw money in my brother's hand, she became IMMEDIATELY nicer. There was already a gratuity added since we had a big group, but my brother told her that he was still going to give her a little bit of a tip over the gratuity. My brother likes to tip, so had she just been decent, not even above and beyond, just plain ole bare bones DECENT, she would've walked away with a LOT more than she got. From your complimentary basket of hush puppies, to your drink always being refilled and the excellent taste of the food. I got the beef and cheese sandwich with fries. I would like to say that this is a excellent restaurant which we go to once a week. The seafood , scallops and clam strips are cooked to perfection. The portions are huge and the service is fast and the price is very reasonable! The only thing I'm not nuts about are the very large onion rings. If they were the same size as the blooming onion appetizer they would be much better. I know this is just my personal preference but give it a try. Let them know about the ring size. You can get a "small" one item fried dinner for $8.95. Now, the term "small" is a misnomer in this place because it will easily serve two. It includes addictive hush puppies (the sweet kind), perfectly prepared cole slaw, a huge baked potato AND an additional side (I chose the collards). The flounder was expertly fried without being greasy, as were the baby shrimP. Service was attentive and friendly. In spite of a jam packed dining area and more than 100 in line, or food arrived hot and fast! It was also remarkably clean when you consider the mob that was there. I asked the waitress about the fee being removed if I pay in cash, she assured me the fee would come off once she tendered the receipt up. Beware, if you choose to eat here make sure you are fully committed for paying for your food, no matter how many times the kitchen royally messes up your order. I came with my family and my uncle ordered the red snapper blackened. When the food came out they brought my uncle tuna as oppose to the red snapper. We sent it back to the kitchen to be corrected, 15 to 20 minutes later they brought out red snapper however it was not blackened. At this point I was extremely disappointed. The manager Lori came over and provided the worst customer service recovery I have ever seen. Lori stated it was our servers fault and our server should have advise us to order the red snapper grilled and blackened in order for the food to be what we desired. I was extremely disappointed as Lori the manager refused to hold the kitchen accountable for once again messing the order up. The lack of accountability did not stop there, this went all the way up to the owner, Steve. On the way out I expressed to Lori my extreme disappointment for having to pay for food that was knowingly not cooked as ordered. Lori went to grab Steve the owner. Steve stated that it was totally the server fault, she should have advised prior to ordering. Steve mentioned that the server was part time and unfortunately it was her error. Not once did Lori or Steve ever hold the kitchen responsible or accountable for the red snapper being not cooked as ordered. Since my uncle refused on sending his food back for a third time because he was advised by Lori(manager) it couldn't be guaranteed it could truly be blackened we were stuck with paying for food that was less than desirable. Last night we patronized Captain Steve's for the second time. This time it was very crowded and raining pretty steadily. We were told there would be a 25-30 minute wait. There was a women standing guard like a sentry that would not allow anyone to enter until their table was ready. I politely asked if our party of four could come into to sit on one of the ten or more open seats visible in the vestibule because my wife and I are handicapped and the other two in our party are in their mid-80's. Vestibule seating is fairly common in most restaurants to provide a comfortable waiting area experience, yet Captain Steve's seating was off-limits. We were sternly rebuked for this request. We were then asked to wait outside in the rain or in our car, which was parked rather a distance from the restaurant. This policy applied to all waiting patrons. We were unwilling to walk back and forth to our vehicle due to our handicap condition and the rain, so we had to endure the discomfort of leaning on our canes and walker in the rain until our table was ready. I WAS MORE THAN SHOCKED TO BE TREATED IN SUCH A MANNER AND THE EXTENT TO WHICH THIS RESTAURANT HAS PUT IN PLACE A FIRM POLICY THAT CLEARLY COMMUNICATES THAT IT WILL NOT MAKE ANY ACCOMMODATION ON BEHALF OF HANDICAPPED PATRONS. By the way, the Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted in 1990, 33 years ago!!!!! Regarding the food - The first time my wife and I dined there, we ordered their make-your-own seafood platter. The jumbo shrimp and sea scallops were excellent. The clam strips and onion rings were severely overcooked and dried out so they had no taste and a terrible texture. The blackened catfish were tasteless and minuscule, making it almost impossible to remove the bones. The hush puppies were just barely passable and I would have greatly preferred bread and butter. Last night we only ordered the jumbo shrimp and sea scallops and had a better food experience. Seating - We were seated in a booth with a very small table that is really only able to accommodate 2 or 3 people, at most. Once the food came, we were so constrained by the small table that it was extremely challenging to move our arms into position to eat our dinner and this greatly detracted from the ability to enjoy our dining experience. Service - I must say that the service was excellent both times and the server's commitment to service was top-notch. Needless to say, we would never return to Captain Steve's because the management finds it acceptable to treat handicapped and elderly patrons in such a disrespectful and shoddy manner. The meal was awesome as usual. I gave this a 3 due to the tables not being 6ft apart. You do have to come and leave with a mask on, but by the time you leave there is a high chance you could leave with covid. If you are someone who doesn't care, then you will be okay, but if you care about social distancing, you may just want to do carryout. The booths are blocked off perfectly.
