I love this place... I just found out about it a few months ago, and it's everything you want and what is essentially an old school fish camp. They are closed M/T/W... so be aware. I've been going there for lunch and by the time the doors open there's usually 30 or 40 people waiting to get in. ... With good reason. I'll keep it simple... You get seated quickly, they take your order quickly, the wait staff is friendly. The pricing is very reasonable, all the seafood tastes very fresh, (I have to get the fried... Because that's what you do, right?) They've got a great selection, food is brought hot and quickly to the table, portions are Very generous and whoever is working the fryers, knows what they're doing. First time I went I got the captains platter... Ended up taking a whole lot of it home... Last time I got the three ingredient platter... thought I would cut back a bit... Wow. This place is fantastic. I'm from the Midwest, but I always seek out seafood when I'm closer to a coast. I learned about Calabash-style seafood and looked for a good representation, and chose this place. My girlfriend and I were very impressed. We split an Admiral's Platter so we could try a bit of everything and I'm glad we did. The server brought us hush puppies with honey butter right when we sat down -- what a way to start! They were smaller than what I'm used to, and the flavor and texture were incredible. In the platter, the scallops stood out even though everything was excellent. They were cooked just right, super soft and full of subtle flavor. Honestly it was all excellent. If this is what Calabash seafood is all about, I'm certainly a fan. read more

Prior to Covid, we would visit Steve's a couple of times per month. About 6 weeks ago, we tried our first revisit after Covid, and tried a Friday evening at 6. We were told there was a 2 hour wait. OK, so that is Friday and everyone is going out. We regrouped and went to another spot for dinner that evening. Last week, we decided to try again, this time on a Thursday at 5 PM. This time, the wait was 45 minutes. Once we got in, we discovered that they are grossly understaffed, which is the cause for the long waits. There was about 30 percent of the tables open due to the staff shortage. There was a 15-20 minute wait for a waitress to get to our table, but once we were waited on, the food came out promptly. I ordered flounder and my wife ordered shrimp. The food was greasy and definitely overcooked. On the way home, my wife said that we will be writing Steve's off of our restaurant list for the future. It was a good thing that we had 'Tums' at home. I don't know what has happened, but the quality of the food has definitely gone down. It is ashamed because we use to enjoy eating here. read more

Our car club traveled to Captain Steve's in Fort Mill, SC for our holiday dinner. About 12 members and their wives arrived early and were the first in line. After waiting for 30 minutes they unlocked the doors and told us there were too many of us to be seated together as a group. I said okay seat us as 6 parties of 4 and we don't have to sit together. The Hostess replied "there are too many of YALL to be seated at one time and when we seat you it will be a 45 minute wait to be served." Bear in mind we would have been the first people to enter. She then asked us to step aside and proceeded to let the next 30 people Behind us in to be seated. On my drive back to NC, I called and asked to speak to the manager. She said to me the rule is there to not inconvenience other customers. She told me there are other places to eat and hung up the phone. We arrived at the restaurant 45 min before they closed. We were greeted with smiles and taken to a table immediately. Our waitress, Tiffany, came with hush puppies and took our drink orders shortly after being seated. Even though they were closing soon, we did not feel rushed or pressured by Tiffany to order. She was really nice and patient with us. She was attentive to our kid, which is always a plus for me especially that night because he tired and whining. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer and it was so tender, it literally melted in our mouths. I ordered baby shrimp and catfish strips with French fries. My husband ordered the Steve's Fisherman Platter. Our son got the cheese pizza and it wasn't piping hot (thank goodness) but was the right temperature for him to go ahead and eat. I really appreciate that because kids are ready to eat just like adults. Lastly, the food wasn't rushed out and we got more than our money's worth. It had so much flavor and seasoning!! So, we drove from the Steele Creek area of Charlotte gleefully to have some fish ! I started off with the she crab soup. It was flavorful and had plenty of crab. My husband's dinner came with a side salad and I loved the chopped ham, cheese and lots of cucumbers on top. The seafood platter portions are HUGE and very reasonably priced. I got the Fisherman's patter and it came with baby shrimp, jumbo shrimp, scallops, deviled crab, flounder, baked potato and cole slaw. The menu said it was supposed to come with clam strips, but I didn't find any. Maybe they substituted the baby shrimp for it. I definitely took a large portion home for lunch the next day. Everything was delicious ! My husband had the salmon with bourbon glaze, baked potato, and hushpuppies. I took a bite, but I thought it was too dry. A basket of hush puppies also come to the table with some honeybutter. Yeeessss ! This is how you do fish in the South ! I had their lemonade and was surprised to find out that they actually put fresh squeezed lemons in there ! Our waitress was nice and we only had to wave her down once after we got the bill. Apparently the initial bill she gave us that said $43 was accidentally someone else's. We gave her our credit card and then was surprised to see the card returned with a receipt for signature saying $54. I ordered the blackened grilled snapper and the salad, fish and sides were delicious. We had both kids and elderly in our party and everyone was very happy. The service was also very attentive. Overall we were quick to get service and the waitress came by quickly again even after we said we needed a minute which was excellent. After that, all our service was fast. They also ensure you have hush puppies as often as you are ready for them, which is nice. We got the Captain's platter and in this order of goodness 1. small shrimp 2. scallops 3. large shrimp 4. oysters 5. crab 6. flounder. The flounder was very disappointing, but everything else was fairly solid. My friend even mentioned the oysters were good, but usually even better than that. We also had the perch which was good value, albeit not nearly as good after it cooled off a little. Onion rings were very good and so were the fries. Multiple times when our bill came, we asked him to split it between us. Captain Steve's is the best fried seafood you can get in the area. I drive down from Charlotte just to eat here. They have recently changed their days and are actually only open Thursday through Sunday at this time. I guess it's hard to get employees at this time. Be warned there can be a LONG wait to get a table. The wait is worth it though! They have a great take out system going on where you order online and then pick up outside on the side of the restaurant. I've done both and both times the food was great. I usually get the fried scallops and the friend calabash shrimp. I was disappointed that they charged me .50 cents for three tiny lemon slices. I guess that's just what the restaurant industry has come to these days. They have a wide selection of menu items and everything I've eaten here has been wonderful. A little drive on I77 towards FortMill took us to the restaurant I was hoping to visit for a really long time. There was a huge queue at the door but it moved quickly and we were seated in a few minutes. Looking at the menu, I saw what I expected to see. Fried sea food! But there were a few unexpected items too. Chicken Parmesan! And a couple of other chicken dishes. Our waitress was very caring and helpful. She was quick to bring us the food and phased them so that the appetizers are not brought along with the entrees. The free hush puppies they give you at the beginning of the meal is alright. Beware, even the ordering the small platters will end up with tons of fried food. So gorge less on the hush puppies and the appetizers. I got the Fried Flounder and baby shrimp with Onion rings. The flounder was mildly flavorful and the baby shrimp was again lacking the flavor punch. I do get that its fried food but the huge let down was there wasn't any flavors! I took a look around at the other patrons and they were taking home huge to-go boxes of fried food. When you eat the onion rings from say Buffalo Wild Wings, I bet you would finish up the whole plate - because it has good flavors even though it is fried. The only suggestion I have is that a huge plate of bland tasting fried food is not what we need. Of course, everyone likes fried food - especially fried seafood. But if the management could revisit the cooking process to add more flavor into your fries and also review your platter and try to through in some non-fried food/sides along with the main entrees so that the plate becomes more appetizing and we, your guests don't get the sweet taste of oil churning our stomachs after a few bites of the entree. read more

The food and service was great. The atmosphere is also wonderful very clean and its was very delightful. The Christmas decor was also lovely made us feel cozy. My server was very personable and made us feel very welcomed. I do not understand some of these reviews about big parties or not being able to mob the lobby. We had a party of 12 and were advised that we would not be able to sit together because the tables only accommodate 8 or less so we can split up 6 & 6 we were fine with that and they would try to put us near each other if they could. So after waiting about 30 min we were sat and side by side. So I do not see why people are getting upset when it's clearly listed on the front door and in the lobby.
