Everything was delicious! Our server, Zoe, told us they were known for their seafood and there is a reason for that. We started with the crab dip and it was phenomenal. Rich, creamy, and sizable chunks of crab with a blend of spices that did not overpower everything else. It was a great way to start our meal and easily enough to share amongst 4 people. I had the Pineapple Blue Crab Fried Rice and my date had Snow Crab legs with an additional side of hush puppies. My crab cake and softshell crab were fried to perfection and paired so well with the fried rice. I was blown away. The crab was extremely fresh and tasty, which we have had a hard time finding recently. The hush puppies were on the savory side and paired with a sweet cream butter which really complimented them. We will be stopping by Captain James every time we are passing through Baltimore. I hope the rest of the menu is as good as what we had tonight because we will be back to try it all! read more

My family and I called in a couple of hours for the "all you can eat crabs". I want to make a note that this is the second time that they urged me they have enough "all you can eat crabs" for a patty of four. I actually asked multiple time if they are sure they have enough for a family of 4 both days. They said "yes", took down my reservation (very polite and professional). We arrived and they were preparing to take us to our table and we told them that we spoke to them earlier. One of the employee (the one the took my order) went to check to see if there were enough crabs. He came out and said "we have enough for 2 people for "all you can eat blue crabs". He looked me in the eyes and said "you called in two". Now this is where I got mad, because the employee insisted that I lied! Let me ask who ever is reading this, if I called in to check and asked multiple times "do you have enough crabs for all you can eat for a RESERVATION OF FOUR". Does that sound like i said two? I was honestly upset that they had enough for only two but when the employee insinuated that I lied about asking enough for 4 is when my family and I left. I will not be returning, ever. Good flavor and texture. The presentation and taste were good. Not salty or fishy. You would love to try it. Lamb Shank. The lamb was fork tender. Needs a little salt. It was served over orzo which had a wonderful broth which should have been saucier and over the lamb. There was also some spinach in the bottom of the bowl. Seafood Rice; was great. Shrimp, mussels, clams, and scallops over saffron rice. Great flavor and awesome colors in this presentation. A definite hit and safe bet. Crab cakes: in Baltimore, everyone has a crab cake and this one is just ok. It is presented well and has a lot of crabmeat. Served with potatoes and green beans. Good but not the best thing on the menu. Creme brulee was weak. The custard was very mushy and thin. They need a good torch and touching. The top should be carmelized sauce. This one is topped with whipped cream and a few blueberries. Seems more like a waiter's grab, decorate and go than a kitchen item. Two things of note: 1)/Wait staff works well as a team. Your water will be refilled every 5 minutes. 2) Automatic 18% gratuity is put on the check matter the size of the party. Plenty of complaints from the table customers on this to the manager. Captin james was outstanding our waiter (Billy) was spot on with everything. Billy set us up with just enough crabs for 9 of us. Crabs we're great and he had corn and hush puppies as well. He never let us go very long with out checking on us. The crabs were Baltimore great the corn and hush puppies were great as well. We had mussels and garlic bread which was great. The clam chowder was outstanding. We had a birthday in the group and delicious chocolate cake was provided at no charge. The cake was the bomb. Ok, we ordered quite a bit of food so we were able to try a variety and here were our thoughts: 1. The escargot: so good. These come in a nice escargot dish, and you get 6 of them. They come drenched in lemon garlic butter but we added more lemon and it really added a nice flavor. They are cooked perfectly. They were nice and tender. The person with me has been to France and eaten escargot there and she said they were definitely comparable. 2. The cream of crab soup: It was tasty but we felt like it was missing something. We added some of the butter from the escargot along with a little lemon and some old bay and it was perfect after that. 3. The oysters Rockefeller: we were not impressed with these. The flavor of the bell peppers (which is not usually in oysters Rockefeller) over powered the oyster itself. We didn't even finish these. 4. The raw oysters: these were great and cleaned to a pretty good standard with a clean finish. Also the mignonette that came with it was super flavorful. 5. The crab skins: the crab was good but the potato itself lacked any flavor. I think they just deep fry it and don't season it. Not good though. 6. The fish sandwich: this was super tasty and the fish itself was cooked perfectly but, they need to rethink using iceberg lettuce, it's lazy and ruined it for me. Also there was no seasoning on the fush itself, just breading which also was quite lazy. Other thoughts: our service was great, they kept our water glasses full. Pay attention to the check as they automatically put an 18% tip on your check so don't double tip (there were only two of us so I'm assuming they do this for all checks). Luckily, Captain James Landing shares a parking lot with Captain James Crab House across the street. It's a shack with a deck right on the water. I got exactly what I was hoping for: a deck, a view of the harbor, and a long picnic table covered in brown paper. We ordered some Old Bay fries, hush puppies, clams, mussels, and crabs. I ordered a Natty Boh to be like a local too. It really does go well with Old Bay seasoning. The crabs were prepared well, but the clams and mussels were tiny and had some grit. The space was rather smaller than I anticipated but nonetheless it was a good experience. The tables that are two seated is a bit close to each other and feels like you don't have personal space with the couples next to you. We requested a bigger table and it wasn't a problem. Food: For appetizer : We had the escargot & the crab dip which were both good in my opinion. The escargot was drenched in garlic butter and you get 6 of them. The crab dip had a perfect ratio of cheese & crab meat in them, served with pretzel bread. For entree: We got the chicken stuffed with crab, as well as a crab Mac and cheese burger cooked medium. The chicken was perfectly cooked with cheese on top. Way better than I expected. The burger was ok. Nothing too special. The Mac and cheese on top of it supposedly was cooked with crab meat but I can barely taste or see it. Drinks: 1 glass of Riesling ($7), a beer ($5), and a mixed drink ($8) Service: I believe our waiter was name Julie, she was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and specials. We bought a $43 Groupon that gave us an amount of $80 off the check. Our total that we had to pay was $28 after the groupon. The break down was we spent $87 on food. Minus the $80 left a $7 check, however, with tax ($5) and an automatic 18% gratitude ($15), equaling out to $28. Overall, the experience was great, the food was excellent, just keep in mind the automatic 18% gratitude! Oh and parking was definitely not a hassle at all, they have a private parking lot right in front of the restaurant across the street. I would definitely come back, but probably use another Groupon if possible. I can't say this place is too pricey, most seafood entrees are high 20s or low 30s. Bad start: Upon arrival we walked into the crowded,semi-loud dining room/mock bot interior and were seated next to a family of 5 who was waiting on their food. We received water but after that service was non insistent. The server came and checked on them and didn't even look in our direction. After 15 minutes of not being acknowledged, we got up to leave. I thought it was okay. I ordered the snow crab legs. They were plentiful and came with hot butter. I had to ask for a side of Old Bay. We also ordered the Classic Rockerfeller, which was the furthest thing from any Oyster Rockerfeller dish I've ever ordered. It had chunks of red pepper under seasoned fresh spinach. It didn't appear to be baked and didn't have cheese. I was severely disappointed and only ate one. I have been to Captain James three or four times. Once, I ate on the outdoor docks and it was a lot fun. Last night I ate in the restaurant. I had a Groupon toward my meal. First my date and I ordered a dozen oysters in the half shell. They were wild and had a good balanced salty/buttery flavor. For an entree, I ordered the Scallops, which came with cheddar grits and broccoli. It was all expertly cooked, piping hot, and was soon devoured quickly. The total number of scallops was 8 and they were about half dollar sized, about 3/4" in height or more. They were more than sufficient in filling me up. I also ordered a Pineapple Express drink and a Strawberry Captain's Basil Mojito. The bartender is excellent. The drinks are delicious!! My date got the sea food platter: it had a stuffed tomato, a baked oyster, salmon, snow crab, and broccoli. I know I'm forgetting something because he ate it so fast. The service was pretty good. I ordered a lot of food because I just couldn't decide on what to get. And, most of it was really good. The only thing I didn't like was the Homestyle Mac & Cheese. It has a weird taste to me. First time here in 15 years. Fantastic and I regret not coming here sooner. Cream of crab soup is one of the best around. Stuffed Rockfish was phenomenal. Very large portion with crab imperial on top. Way too large for one person. Easily could feed two people. Also my girlfriend ordered the Mediterranean salmon pasta dish and she still hasn't stopped telling me how much she loved the dish. The salmon filet was cooked perfect and the portion was incredibly generous. The chocolate cake was to die for. Half cake and half cheesecake. However, I think the softshell crab were too much breaded. my husband is lactose intolerant, we advised the server who was very nice but super busy. When we first walked in, there was a huge cloud of smoke in the lobby area that immediately took me off guard. The front hostess greeted me as if there wasn't huge a cloud of smoke between us. We were then seated and i noticed that the whole dining area was a bit smokey. When our waitress came to take our order i asked her why it was so smoky in there and she made up some weird answer saying something like "Oh im not sure. Maybe the weather outside is interfering with the smoke in the kitchen and blowing it into the dining area." I just decided to ignore it after that. It wasn't until we left the restaurant that I was extremely annoyed because i smelled just like the kitchen! My clothes and hair reeked of the smell of old grease and seafood. The scent reminded me of how I used to come home smelling when I was 13 years old working at a greasy sub shop!! It was disgusting! The whole ride home that's all I could smell! I even had to roll down the window to try and air my hair and clothes out. I don't know what was going on in there but it seems like their exhaust wasn't working or something. My cousins and I were in town for the weekend, and went here based on a recommendation from one of the Chefs of the hotel where we were staying for the weekend. The crispy calamari and hushpuppies with the honey butter was good! The stuffed shrimp was ok, but the "cheesy grits" and mixed was terrible. It had no flavor. It didn't blow me away. We were told that this place was one of the best places in the city to eat seafood, and I just wasn't impressed. This place was such a treat for a Thanksgiving dinner. The menu is pretty extensive but I walked in knowing what I wanted - considering the build up to going. Our waiter, Greg, was super personable and took great care of us. The portions were big and even though I came with an empty stomach (and did not order an appetizer), I still had food to take home with me. So the good part, the food. I don't really have much to comment on for her because she really wasn't feeling well so..we'll consider it good. My mom had a crab cake, broccoli, mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts as well. The crab cake was ginormous and looked very appetizing. As a crab cake aficionado, she had no complaints and spoke very highly of it. All in all, great experience. I didn't dig too deep into these reviews because often times, I feel like people get on yelp to complain about restaurants instead of dealing with the issue at the restaurant. As a former server, I can say that talking to a manager goes a long way. If you're unhappy with something, don't get on Yelp and bash the place without speaking to someone in charge. Very large portion of dip and two pretzel baguettes sliced into crostini for dipping. Good and filling. Plenty for our group of three. For dinner, I opted for a turkey club with fries. Very generous portion. I could only eat half of it. The fries were cold, so I left them. Then our party ordered 1/2 dozen of X-large steamed crabs. Super pricey. The x-large looked more of a medium to me. I probably got three tablespoons of crab meat out of two crabs. Again, the food was mediocre, generous portions (with exception of the size of the steamed crabs) but the menu choices were so limited that I couldn't really find anything that I would have wanted to order. read more
