We are seafood lovers and happened to come across this small neighborhood seafood joint while exploring the area. They had good business with people coming in so we decided to take a chance. There aren't too many remarkable restaurants in the area so we didn't know what to expect, but since the first time we tried them we were hooked. We always get the shrimp and scallop combo (OUR ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!!!) but we've also tried the whiting which is really good too. Everything is seasoned just right and cooked just right. Their seafood is lightly breaded which we love because you can really taste the seafood. Portions are generous and prepared-to-order to perfection. Every time we finish we wished we ordered extras for the next day. That's how good it is. Over time we have gotten to know the owners and they are truly the nicest hard working family that makes their food with love. Truly a hidden gem. While this place has been a community stable, I honestly do not see the draw here. For the price, I could've went somewhere better. The fish was lackluster and so were the shrimp and fries. The best thing I can say is the place was clean and the workers immediately took my order. It was just okay and nothing to brag about. l bought a trout and a whiting fish plate. I was not impressed at all. The hush puppies were not hot. I asked for cocktail and tater sauce but was given honey mustard and only enough cocktail sauce for one plate. The fish was "okay". I've been visiting Captain J Seafood for several years and really enjoy it. The food is always fresh and delicious, the service is fast and friendly, the restaurant is always neat and clean. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. Parking is never an issue here as Village Square Shopping Center has a huge private lot that generally is only about 5-10% filled with cars. The restaurant occupies a corner space at the end of the strip of stores. The menu consists mostly of a wide variety of fresh fried fish and seafood items. I think the only entree on the menu that's not fried is steamed shrimp. This place is really all about seafood as the only non-seafood items offered are fried chicken tenders, hush puppies, french fries and coleslaw. I usually order the Seafood Platter B which consists of a couple of fish fillets (usually whiting), scallops, shrimp and oysters. Seafood Platter A is the same but has a crab cake in place of the oysters. I am not impressed with their crab cake but I always enjoy all the items on Seafood Platter B. I usually pay a $1 upcharge to get flounder instead of whiting on my platter. Like all the other combinations and dinners, hushpuppies, french fries and coleslaw are included. Their homemade cocktail and tartar sauces are also very nice and are included with your order. My wife usually gets the fish and shrimp combination or the catfish dinner, both are delicious. I appreciate the COVID protocols in place at Captain J. Signage is clear, you must wear a mask to enter. They even have a sign reminding people the mask must cover mouth and nose. There is a small dining room with seating for 20 to 25 people or so but during the COVID pandemic they are strictly takeout with no dining in. They also don't take phone-in or online orders. You must order in person but the service is always good so you don't have to wait more than a few minutes. i enjoy picking up lunch or dinner at Captain J. The food is great, portions are ample and it's very affordable. Add in their friendly service and the neat and clean appearance and you have a winning combination. Two thumbs up. read more

Surprisingly yummy! I'd give them five stars, but they fry everything and I'd like to have the option of ordering baked/broiled seafood. First of all, this place has been standing for a least 10 years and I never paid them any attention until a few months ago. I ordered a platter and the food was ready in about 10 minutes. I'm used to waiting 15 maybe even 20 mins for seafood to go, but not here! Granted, they were not super busy around 6 pm on a Thursday evening, but customers were dining in and after we placed our order at least two parties came in to place orders. Also, I requested hot sauce and cocktail sauce...check! But they did not have old bay seasoning to pass out or even pour into a cup. This was a little disappointing... Old Bay seasoning is life! Oh well, we settled for what they did have and we were super pleased! Everything was superb! The food was golden brown...yummy fries, the hush-puppies tasty, the fish well cooked and the shrimp... I wanted more! Scallops so not enough! Now the crab cake... it wasn't the best, but their version, I approve, but don't expect a full cake of crab. The crab cake is thin but the filling is light. However, next time, I will pass on the crab cake and opt for more scallops and shrimp. I see this place becoming an addiction if you let them. I'd definitely recommend you give this place a try. They offer pretty much all things seafood but they have chicken tenders/fingers as well if you have children with you that stick to the norm. There is seating/dining in available. And no worries about smelling like seafood. There is also a TV inside as well I believe. Parking is plentiful. The restaurant is located in a large a shopping strip among other stores. While this area used to be booming with shops, there are only a handful still standing. Such as: Dollar Store, Big Lots, CitiTrends. This place may be hard to spot from the street. But it's located off of Military Hwy and it's positioned in the corner. You will see the Burger King from the highway first, so turn by BK and look in the corner and bam...there will be the restaurant. Have fun and enjoy life ;) read more

Gosh, this is so tucked away in a struggling strip mall, Big Lots, Home Emporium Kmart in the area also. I was wanting some fried fish and sure thing...fries fish, French fries, hushpuppy also fried, and fried tater sauce..just kidding there. Before I moved to this area I went to pick up food here. Not super tasty but cooked fast and the place is clean. Nice ladies behind the counter also. Whiting fish dinner consisted of 3 identical portions, fried. My girlfriend and I recently moved to the area, and she's been meeting me up by my place of employment for lunch on paydays. I asked a coworker where I should go for some good seafood, particularly cat fish, and they recommended this place to me. Man, I'm glad they did. For context, my girlfriend isn't an avid seafood fan. She likes it, don't get me wrong, but she's not a fan of super-fishy-type things. Shrimp for her can be hit or miss, depending on freshness and seasoning. We went in for lunch, I got the cat fish dinner and she the medium fried shrimp. Spoiler alert: she loved her meal, and she's definitely a picky customer. My cat fish was seasoned well, was fried perfectly and was silky smooth. Her shrimp were, honestly, some of the best fried shrimp I've had. The batter they use is so flaky, light and crispy, and it's clear their seafood is very fresh. We used to live in South Florida, and as I'm sure you can imagine the seafood standard down there is pretty high. This place definitely contends with the hole-in-the-wall locations I loved in Miami and the Keys, and frankly it's down to the wonderful seasoning. It seems to be a very small, family-run establishment, and it's clear whoever's cooking just knows how to cook and season very well. I have been going to Captain J's for 20 years, the food is fresh, if it were fresher it would still be in the ocean. The place is spotless, service is good, prices are great. You get a lot of food for the price. I have never been treated rudely, nor ignored. The place is small, does a tremendous volume of business. It is run by family members, usually no more then 3-4. Ok this is my favorite place to get butterfly shrimp. they fry them perfectly and never over cooked. The hush puppies are great. A little sweet a little savory. I had take out from Capt J Seafood tonight. I had fish, scallops and shrimp. Of course there was fries and hush puppies. It was called Seafood platter B. OMG, there was so much food, I could only eat half and the half I ate was so fresh, so good. The scallop tasted as if it had just come out of the ocean out there back door it was so fresh tasting. The fish was perfectly fried and nothing was greasy. The fries were even good, nice and crispy and not greasy like those big fries can get. Great fresh seafood mostly all fried and steamed shrimp. We took visiting company here fior lunch and they feasted. It is a small primarily carry out in the corner of a shopping center undergoing renovation but you won't be disappointed in the food or hospitality. Did I mention the prices? They are one third of the prices of the same seafood platter in Va. Beach plus it's piping hot as they cook to order and hand to you over the counter. I tried this place for the first time today . I ordered a whiting fish sandwich for 6.99 to go and it was pretty tasty . I ordered and my food was done in about 7-10 mins. It was fresh and hot . The used regular white bread and that was fresh was well . The put 2 peices of whiting in between the bread with tarter sauce on the side . The staff was pretty friendly. They also have a seating area for people who want to dine in . The prices are pretty reasonable . I also had a side of fries . They use crinkle fries they were also fresh and hot . I def.
