Easy to miss but really pretty close to the main drag, this place is small but definitely popular. The drinks were good, employees were friendly, and the food was very good (I had the waffle with ice cream, SO yummy). On a Friday evening it was already starting to fill with all the tables and most of the bar seats taken. Bartenders are rude and talk down to you as you order. Tried to order a single beer after a long day, and a long line to be passed up and told to get to the back a new line that was just forming. Ruined my night and I drank my beer and told my group of coworkers to meet me at a different location. read more

Stopped by with some friends on a Thursday right at open... Was greeted with a smile and our 6 top was shown out to the patio. What a great view of the city...it was sunny, and open, and was a great way to start the afternoon. Ordered the Captains Tea, which was a great alcoholic spin on Sweet Tea...and the fried goodness commenced! The cheese curds were definitely my favorite, but the onion rings were great too, and the sauces were awesome. My only suggestion would be a few more beer selections, maybe a local or two. I like Captain Blacks! The service is friendly and pretty attentive for the huge crowds that congregate here. The patio is the best and the drinks are stiff... and a little overpriced. The food is good, but it's a little tough to shell out $11 for the chicken and waffles. Good cheap beers at happy hour. Both times I ordered the hushpuppies they came out burned. They would have been awesome otherwise. The fries and gravy were ok. The red beans and rice were pretty great. Go for the beer and atmosphere. They have a great menu as long as they can execute it properly. read more

This was stop three of our chicken and waffle tour de seattle. I got a fish & chips platter to even things out. Their Louisiana style batter is actually really good. REALLY GOOD. It's nicely spiced, extra crispy, and textured like tempura. Delectable. Unfortunately, the waffle was pretty plain jane, and couldn't stand up to how good the cornbread waffle that I had earlier was, or even to how good the fried chicken was. I also realized that I need a gigaton of maple syrup in order to enjoy regular waffles. Since we got take-out, they didn't give us much. I don't think they do take out very often, since they forgot to give us cutlery, or ketchup for my 'chips'. Oh well. read more

Lured by the promise of a Southern delicacy, chicken and waffles, I climbed the treated 2x4 steps to the dark and languid hipster den. I had been to the bar before, and had no problems with the beer, patrons or bartenders, but this was my first foray into Captain Black's curious cuisine. When we approached the bar. the server was friendly and amicable. Placing our order was as simple as anywhere. My friend and I ordered the Chicken and Waffles -$11 and the chef's salad -$5, or something....We got a few modestly priced draft beers and headed out to the balcony, basically the only part of the bar without an oppressive, cramped, and dank atmosphere. Of course, it was a sunny day in Seattle, so the deck was packed. Luckily we found a seat near the rear. After about 10 minutes, our food arrived. The boy, with pierced nose, striped shirt, and the "God please get me out of here, I am not willing to put ANY effort into this job today" attitude, tossed our plates onto the table. "Forks over there." Mumbling and refusing to make eye contact, he waggled his head in a nondescript direction. He proceeded to chat and laugh with some other patrons who were obviously his friends, while my friend and I gathered the required utensils as our food cooled in the evening air. Now, looking at our food with the actual intent of eating it, I was struck with the sort of sinking feeling you get when you realize you're being dumped. My eleven dollar "Chicken and Waffles" consisted of exactly one waffle, which, judging from the baked saltine dryness of it, must have been cooked several hours earlier and reheated, broken in half. I believe it had some nutmeg on it, and the syrup was a standard affair. Now the chicken...the fried chicken broke my heart. I should have placed more value on the description in the menu "Two pieces of AIRLINE chicken." Here I was, assuming "airline" referred to the preparation of the chicken, when REALLY it was an allusion to the abysmal quality and questionable safety of the meat. I took a deep breath, cracked off a bite sized piece of waffle, and scraped off a hunk of chicken with my fork. I dipped the morsel into the lukewarm syrup, and put it into my mouth. An odd crunching, squishing sensation, accompanied with the bland taste of cardboard, chicken breast, and the syrupy sweetness of syrup, lulled my tongue to numbness. My dreams had been crushed. I had been looking forward to this for weeks, and here I was, mouth run dry with dehydrated waffle, facing my future embarrassment. I had told my scoffing friends "No Chicken and Waffles does NOT sound weird! It sounds absolutely delicious you fools!" and now was forced to face the error of my ways: Chicken and Waffles at Captain Black's was not only disgusting, but entirely too expensive. For $11 I expect a certain quality and/or quantity of chicken and/or waffles. I received neither. This is not to mention the embarrassing salad of limp arugula and mealy tomato which we ate morosely. TLDR: Captain Black's has good beer, and abysmal, expensive and soul crushing food. Service is as minimal as possible. read more

This place was very disappointing. As soon as my friends and I entered through the door, I felt an unwelcoming feeling. Five of us were standing at the bar, ready to order and the two servers behind the bar didn't even look at us until we had to say something. You think that was awkward? I asked if the forks on the side table were alright to take and the server just gave me a weird look, ignored me for a second to respond to someone else and then brush off saying that I can take whatever. In the mean time they ran out of chicken and didn't even care to tell my friend (who ordered three dishes) that they were unfortunately all out. My friend went in to grab some napkins and asked about the chicken and waffle order, the server told her to just tell our friend that they didn't have any... So my friend had to go up to the bar and ask to get her money back. It was all just ridiculous. I had chicken strips and fries which they had available. I never enjoy talking about bad service but this place deserves a little complaint. The service that we got was unbelievably bad. The servers were completely rude. The chicken strips were alright but not good enough for me to even try to check this place out again and I'm definitely okay with that. read more

Why only three stars? Well lets start kideos. I ordered up the chicken and waffle with and a dessert of pecan pie with a scoop of Molly Moon's vanilla ice cream. Now while this was all tasty it fell a wee bit short of a solid four star. Although the chicken was nicely seasoned, breaded and fried I think two pieces of chicken would have been better. The waffle would have been better had it been freshly warm. I think that the waffle may have been made earlier in the day and was not hot. The syrup although some of the best I've had was cold as well. Waffles and syrup should be hot NOT COLD! Now I am no fancy cook by any means but it only takes a matter of minutes to pour the batter into the waffle maker and cooked. Not a hard concept. The pecan pie was very good and the crust was light and tasted like it was made in house with yummy care. And well we all know Molly does ice cream right. So had the dish come with two chickens and the waffle and syrup been toasty hot a four star rating would be in order. I will say that I hope to come back soon though so I can give the pork chops and fries with gravy a whirl. read more

In a new city innocent to the hazards that were at hand I wandered into a danger zone I had been forwarded about. This zone, this pike/pine weekends of horror. I attempted to gain entrance into any bar with little prevail. But upon gaining access to what would normally seem a safe establishment I instantly assumed the tuck and roll technique for my safety. Which only lead to tumbles and awkward exchanges in glances. Luckily an angel from a bar stool of beaming light sensed my fear and need for alcohol consumption before it was too late. As 2 was approaching in mere 4 hours. He let me in on secret oasis where all you dreams and fantasy come true. I fleed the zone feeling it pulling on my pants. Barely escaping with what little dignity I had left. I wiped my eyes and enter this shack that was captain blacks. The music and people consumed me. I had found my new home. I approached the bar and it all came together. The oasis had a giant lion guarding over his pride. The thunder of his presence when he answer my name is RAAHHHHHHH! The ground shook. fireworks seemed to be exploding. I choked on my craft well whiskey neat that was delivered so fast it could only be witchcraft. The crowd gasped with oooohhhh aaahhhhh. All was instantly right in this world and I got wasted. Great place. I would totally recommend this place but I'm keeping it for myself. read more

I went there w some friends last Thursday night and had their chx n waffles which were the best thing EVER. I'm a little bias because I live around the corner making this an easy place to drop into. However, that doesn't change the fact that the fried Beechers Cheese curds were amazing! They definitely have a few kinks to work out - for example, no water was ever brought to the table and it took a little long to get a round of drinks. i'll stop in for some after work drinks and snacks. the nachos are killer, so are the tacos. the drinks are decent. asked for a white russian but they didn't have any cream. that was a bummer. when the weather is nice sit outdoors as it's lovely. it does get kind of packed when it's nice out and the music will sometimes be too loud and too obnoxious to really enjoy yourself. very hipster like vibes, but that's capitol hill in general. read more

They always have coupons on stranger perks, but I guess they sometimes don't take them now because the bartenders don't want to. i was extremely disappointed. i went with a group of friends (10 in total) and we sat out on the deck. it was nice since it was a nice, fair-weathered seattle night, but we sat right below a tree and things kept falling from the trees on our heads and we coudln't see what it was since it was almost pitch black out since they didn't have any porch lights. the service was also slow and the waitress was not nice. cod po'boy - portion size was ok. bread was not good. pretty tasteless mac and cheese - ok if you like things with a really homemade cheesy, almost too cheesy, taste homemade chips - not good. at all. a couple friends of mine ordered beers and they weren't cold. it was worth a try but i would not go back. read more

Possibly the worst bar on Capital Hill: it stank of sewage the few times I've been, the drink selection is minimal, there's no seating unless the weather is nice and the decks are open, and why did they replace the old menu? That was good bar food, this new one is just sad. The only reason this dive gets a second star is that the both of the bartenders I've dealt with there were pretty cool. read more

Don't let it's subtle outside fool you. Inside the food is delicious! I had what was probably one of the best burgers I've ever had and I have had many. The atmosphere was nice and if you go there on a nice day go out on the patio and enjoy a nice view while you eat. Great place I'd reccomend to anyone who eats food in the Capitol hill area. read more
